Most fun I've had playing any games this jam! There's enough curses to keep things interesting, and the curse mechanic has an opposite effect to what many roguelikes have, in which the player power curve goes up as you play a run. Instead, when you reset you're relatively way more powerful. The effect is really nice, makes me want to keep playing after a loss instead of giving up! Amazing art and music / sfx too!

pigeonliam 2021-10-05 04:18

The curse thing is really cool! Sometimes surprising how they affect the game which was super fun. Wanted to collect them all haha

mahjoub 2021-10-05 08:32

Quite challenging entry with a lot of gameplay variations! Impression quality, well done!

simpathey 2021-10-06 14:45

Wow I just have to say the replatability of this game is insane, this is so much fun! The only thing I can think of as feedback is inverting the color of projectiles when they are in the flashlight with a masking layer or something like that, just to make it clearer when your being shot. Besides that I cant think of much. One of my fav games of the jam so far!

recursor 2021-10-06 17:32

Great audio in this game, and I love the look of the main character. It reminds me of a frog.

nico-villanueva 2021-10-06 20:22

Only did a Normal run, but it's so good! Very cool downgrades, and damn love the art

tarren 2021-10-07 06:55

The curse mechanic was both funny and innovative, it made the game a lot of fun to play.

cakestorm 2021-10-07 15:16

I loved seeing all of the curses in this game - there were so many of them, that I only had a few repetitions throughout the entire run! It was really fun when then synergised to be particularly bad as well, and I'd imagine an invisible player, invisible flashlight and invisible crosshair would make for some interesting gameplay. The art was beautiful as well, especially impressive with only 2 colours, and the 3D effects on the enemies looked very nice. It still looked good even with the random palette swaps! Overall a very fun game, with a solid design, well done!

badpiggy 2021-10-07 16:53

The idea for this is so twisted that it actually works lol. I'm not entirely on-board with some of the curses though. Too much screenshake or a different palette may not really work for some people's vision, the rest work wonderfully though lol. The visuals were awesome and the SFX were really crunchy. Don't really have any complaints other than some curses being a little too much for some people. The game has a nice variety of enemy types, it really is a different experience every time you play and it's damn fun overall to try and overcome the game's challenge. I was able to beat the boss on the normal difficulty with 9 deaths and I'll definitely come back to this to try the harder difficulties. Phenomenal work on this.

shores 2021-10-07 19:33

Haha, I love it! Instead of getting upgrades every round you get downgrades, genius! Challenging and fun, good job!

cookie-chr 2021-10-07 21:53

The curse: "Invert black and white!" Me, a programmer: "Oh no, not the light mode!" Anyway great game! Love the theme

dinwy 2021-10-08 06:53

Wow, this game is awesome. There are only a few number of games like this, game play & graphic & sounds harmonized together and bringing a good game feeling. Great!

dioinecail 2021-10-08 10:56

a really good concept and execution, i really enjoyed it!

yumao 2021-10-08 13:48

Kinda hard for me, but really really fun. The curse system is so addictive that I want to play it again and again. Also, I love the 3D enemies in the 2D pixel game. Great work!

ethankessler 2021-10-08 18:44

Superb! I loved the aesthetic and the game was so much fun to play. The movement was smooth and combat was engaging and well balanced. Great work!

minibobbo 2021-10-08 21:02

By far the greatest evil was the awful color palette I ended up with... lesserevil.png

Very nicely done! Lots of fun and plenty of repeatability.

raphiell 2021-10-09 16:03

I had an absolute blast with this one! My only complaint is some of the upgrades are nullified by others, like 'Cardio' is a freebie on expert difficulty, the invert colors doesn't matter much when you get a random palette, and personally, I prefer the inverted colors in the first place.

One request, include on the end screen the upgrades you picked, I think it would be cool to see what you all had to deal with.

Well done!

peterfiftyfour 2021-10-09 22:23

This is a fantastic entry! The only feedback I have is the aiming sometimes feels a little off since the enemies are 3d it kinda messes with you a bit, especially the ones that hover just above the ground!

maggardjosh 2021-10-10 00:48

This was a ton of fun! Loved the concept and playing on normal difficulty and the difficulty curve was just right!

gamepopper 2021-10-10 10:39

Beat the game on Normal Evil Mode with only four deaths! This game was brilliant, the pixel art is clean and yet animations are really smooth, and the visual effects add to the difficulty really well. There are a lot of different curses to choose from, adding to the originality of the gameplay. I think some enemies had too basic of a design, but given the low resolution I'm guessing some limitations had to be considered. Great work!

wendel-scardua 2021-10-10 16:17

The low-resolution, 1-bit pixel art of your game is amazing! The variety of the curses, enemy patterns, even multiple game modes (I almost beat it on normal, then went with easy mode to see the ending, may play some more later), I can't even thing of something to criticize here. If this weren't a jam game, the only thing I'd miss would be some kind of collection showing which curses you've already got during your runs, for some extra "replayability".

lucasvb 2021-10-10 17:21

Extremely polished gameplay concept. The idea of picking curses along the way is so good, and the ones you folks came up with were all very interesting to play around with.

The enemies are weird but all very interesting to handle and visually distinctive despite the small resolution and amount of colors. The flashlight mechanics is well done and works really well with the overall controls and the movement speed.

Graphically, I'm impressed by how well you managed to make everything read despite the 1-bit color resolution. The details on the border are a nice touch too.

I also though the music was very very good. Please @bruncket, release the soundtrack somewhere! :)

By the way, I got a bug at some point where the game got stuck, with an exclamation point that appeared earlier never materializing.

echo-gameworks 2021-10-10 18:08

Really loved the concept and the mechanics. It had just the right amount of challenge and diversity to keep things interesting. Two drawbacks - 1) readability of the characters and 2) some of color palettes were just not enjoyable to look at - maybe it was suppose to be part of the challenge, but it took away from the game more than anything. Great work!

m1nus 2021-10-10 18:27

This is amazing! The gameplay is extremely engaging, the soundtrack is perfect, and the art is so well made. 5/5 all the way!

madr 2021-10-10 18:38

Very cool and very polished - love the 1BIT graphics!

itzemii 2021-10-10 20:12

I love twin-stick-shooter ... unfortunately I cannot control them with WASD and mouse, prefer twin-stick. But what I played I liked. Nice 1-bit graphics. Great music!

seaslugstudios 2021-10-10 22:24

this was a very fun game! i didnt win my first run but this is a game that i could continue playing for hours to try and beat it! the music and audio fit really well too..i loved that there are so many fun curses implemented, i just cant seem to pick the right combo to beat this LOL will be trying again to beat it because its really fun!

almost 2021-10-10 22:54

It's a simple concept, but quite fun! It got pretty tense towards the end, and was satisfying to succeed.

I won on normal difficulty with 8 deaths. I was invisible, cursor invisible, my flashlight wobbled, I start with 50% battery, I die if I run out of battery, one of my inputs is stuck, ink splots appear, my game was black-white inverted, dots cover the screen, and I had random color palettes.

I like that most of the modifiers didn't feel too bad. Some were just distractions, and some just required me to be a bit more patient or careful.

It's really cool that you managed to fit in a boss fight at the end too!

rookrules 2021-10-11 00:18

he summoned on top of me!

kongo 2021-10-11 16:51

Really engaging and well polished game! Good job i love it! :)

chris1919 2021-10-11 19:01

Very creative. I really like the concept of adding on player chosen curses each level. I'm impressed that you even had time to add in difficulty levels. This game has a lot more polish that I expect for a game jam game.

yikescloud 2021-10-11 19:47

Very innovative and smart mechanic game, use the different curse stack replace the level design to give the placer a different difficulty and experience. Enemy is simple but work very well. It's very fun to play your game, good job!

saucygames 2021-10-12 04:45

Great Downwell vibes

mhm32167 2021-10-12 14:35

Really fun and polished. Very juicy and satisfying. Quite addictive. All around nice job :D

tescoone 2021-10-12 16:46

Some color palette really gave me a hard time haha. Your game was really cute & fun, plus you added many enemy types ! something I wish I had time for

yorsh 2021-10-12 23:01

You don't need many pixels to have amazing game feel apparently :)

Very well polished game, I had a blast playing !

gentoogames 2021-10-12 23:07

Easily one of my favorite entries in the jam! Everything about this is incredible, and some of the curses are cruel and hilarious. Only criticism is that the shooting sounds does get a little repetitive after a while

pavocado 2021-10-13 15:09

That was truly an incredible game! Very fun to play. I'm gonna play a couple more times to see exactly how many different curses there are. Some of them must be impossible combinations >:D

sneakylemon 2021-10-13 19:43

I managed to finish this with 0 deaths on normal and it was really fun, great job! I chose the random palette color curse and got a few ones that almost made my eyes bleed. Not complaining, I did that to myself :D

It's a very cool idea and great execution. I could see this becoming an interesting little roguelike.

francoisvn 2021-10-14 00:24

Top notch jam game! :D

robonaut121 2021-10-14 19:13

Nice game! The curse mechanic is pretty nice, although I do find some curses too easy (although, I suppose that's good in some cases). I love the 1bit, downressed, high-framerate aesthetic that this game has, and honestly, I really have no complaints about this game. Keep up the good work!

burnoutauge 2021-10-15 19:37

This is easily the best entry we have played so far. The style is very cool and the music is also really well made. The gameplay is the best part abut your game. The curse mechanic really kept things fresh between playtrhoughs, since we were always looking for synergies to fuck up our game even more! very gud!?

blushingcrow 2021-10-16 01:59

1-bit is so hard to get right, and in such a small window too - the card aesthetics, monsters - it all reads so well. That alone would make this a top class entry but the game lives / choice of curses / tricky enemy mechanics that are drip-fed to the player really are something else.

I'm not good enough to beat this game but I'm going to keep trying!

ghostbit 2021-10-16 04:25

fantastic job! 4.5 out of 5! the .5 being 1-bit. i know it isn't an easy style to pull of, so my hats off to you for trying it. i just wish i saw how the enemies looked. overall great job!

katanoueki 2021-10-16 04:37

Super cool art style and very polished game!

strega 2021-10-17 03:35

Really fun game! The aesthetic worked really well. I loved how the curses affected the gameplay and visuals. The combat was really snappy and juicy. There was a good variety of enemies and behaviors. I thought the sound designed worked really well too. No complaints!

homeworld 2021-10-17 21:26

Amazing. I barely won in least evil mode, died 21 times. The progression made it crazy fun, and the feedback and graphics kept it fresh to look at!

cameron-paxton 2021-10-17 23:36

Definitely a lot of fun, and a really unique idea that naturally bumps up the difficulty curve. Died on the last night x_x

No real criticism I can think of, it's a really solid entry. Well done!

xpoho 2021-10-18 18:49

Очень круто. В стиле Alan Wake - мочи всех фонариком!

robert-li 2021-10-18 21:45

I dont have any criticisms for you! It is a solid piece of work! The consistency of the pixels is what I enjoy seeing the most
