I can't believe this game was made in a weekend! I've been the adventurer before -- every D&D campaign starts at an Inn -- but it was fun to be the Inn Keeper and be the one sending people off on quests. The art is cute and the gameplay is fun.
I couldn't quite figure out how to attract more adventurers. The ones I had were not strong enough for some of the quests and I didn't know how to attract more or to level them up other than by sending them on quests. I also wasn't sure if I was supposed to be doing something to keep people from being bored and wandering off.
Great game!

@snufkinshat Oh noes! The build I uploaded was broken - there should be new groups every few weeks! (fixed) Thanks for the feedback!

Super cool game! I loved how the story revealed itself through the side quests while the main quest was ever present. I died and my daughter took my place, and a new grave appeared. Hilarious! Awesome that there was a quest to kill the mysterious hooded figure. Too bad none of my regulars were up to the task so I just suckered up and paid all the gold back. I wonder if there is a an alternative ending to the game where you actually get rid of the hooded figure?
My favourite game so far!

@bradur Thanks! There are 3 ways of ending the game :D - and yes you can defeat him!

This is amazing! Would love to see a polished version of this. Seems like phone game material. Lovely musics. Sounds for menu interaction was great. Clean aesthetic. Just a stellar game.

amazing game. I've always wanted to build something like this (assigning quests to adventurers), but I never thought that an Innkeeper could be doing this. (I was always going to some "adventurers guild" idea)
The mood is excelent, the UI is great. For the period of the challenge, you did an amazing job.
Do you plan to continue working on this? I think it could be a great game.

As vjmunhoz said. Amazing game probably the best I have seen here so far. Loved the graphics and the idea of quest assigning!

I saw what you did about the theme (), but you did it very well. I played two times to get the two endings, good job!
Really nice game. Loved your approach to the theme. Keep up the good work!

tavern questgiving games are fun, and I like the twist on that formula you used to incorporate the theme.
Quite a complex game for a jam—nice job! Also thank you for providing a web version!
I think there are a lot of systems underlying this game that are not very apparent, so the interface could use a bit more work. More importantly, there needs to be more shown about how you take down the lich (which I apparently somehow managed to kill), and having to scroll through the items feels a little clunky. In terms of gameplay, perhaps there could be a bit more in terms of strategy (feed the lich's powers vs take him down)?
Otherwise, very neat idea, love the take on the theme, superb pixel art and its great how rich and full of mystery/lore the game feels.

This is a clever, cozy little game. The concept is great. It seemed like the "Ruff Riders" were the only group I had that was really good enough to do most of the quests though. But I managed to level them up enough to defeat the Lich!
This is really impressive! Nice and comfy artstyle, Fairly challenging, and cool to watch characters grow in power as they complete quests. My only issues are that the quests you get seem luck-based in their difficulty, and that it felt like that your character death had no weight as they were immediately replaced by another one.

The game looks good, but I couldn't really see with ease how much people were in each group and did some wrong stuff trying to move someone and so on...
So: - Try making an outline to the selected group, this way the player will have a visual feedback about who is he moving.
Actually, I just saw this issue.
Congratulations on the game, if you polish it up and do some work about it, you will definely have a good game (Maybe for mobile?)

"success: a debt repaid in full" Window, would be nice to close this then behind i can play with "spacebar" but though a nice game with great music and sounds. :hearts:
This was awesome to play, and I paid the Lich off in full!! I only sacrificed 3 adventurers at the beginning. Currently, I think it is too easy to get by on sending adventurers out on successful quests as the more that return, the more money the inn earns off their tabs. My biggest complaint is that I played for 20 minutes, and I desperately wanted the music to change more than it did. I understand it's all Freesound stuff done for a jam, but the music would be the first thing I replace. It'd also be nice if the Log was on its own space so that it's easier to read. And ramp up that difficulty! Force me to kill those adventurers. All in all, a great entry, and I had fun playing it. Thank you!
Impressed at the amount of story you were able to get into this one. Liked the little quests that came up and the addition of the Log tab was a nice touch. Would be good if it had a darker background though so it would be easier to read.

I was quite confused about the seating thing, it would be nice to signal somehow who is already seated with let's say different button as re-seat" or something. I liked the idea being the inkeeper who suggests quests to players! I loved the graphics and the calming music :)

A very complete game.
Very attractive aesthetic style.
It would be better if there were some special events.

Great game! I really like the whole concept of being the quest giver. Had quite some fun playing. Good job!
Very nice concept! The graphics are really solid. Would have loved to play it in fullscreen but the UI wasn't properly scaled on a HD monitor (1920x1080). Thank's for making this game.

Really nice game! I think you could re-make it into a full game. I loved the calm music and the mechanics. A few small nitpicks would be that some of the UI was too high up and covered up by the bookmark bar, some of it was too low, and in the beginning, it was a bit hard to learn the mechanics, since everything was happening so fast. A tutorial would be nice. Apart from that, great job!
I really like this! I haven't played a game where you give quests to RPG adventurers from the safety of your tavern before. There's a nice mix of competing tasks throughout: placing adventurers in seats, picking out quests for them, making sure they're healed up and leveling up enough.
I was very impressed with the art style and music, but also the level of detail that went into the characters and quests. The world feels surprisingly alive for a jam game. Great job.

Defeated the Lich with a party that had 10 wisdom, strength and stealth 9 and magic only 2 - I thought I had to develop another party to be able to beat the magic stat of the lich in a separate quest. Very interesting concept, nice graphics and music, wonderful atmosphere - it was really fun, cheers!

@foumart Good to hear! And your party had good luck on their side apparently! The chance at beating a part of the quest is your party skill / quest diff. So you had a 20% chance of succeeding on Magic vs the Lich :) (and since the diff was more than 3, failure would mean immediate death of one random member of the group)
Absolutely fantastic. I beat the game, even though it absorbed a great deal of my time. The depth of this game's content surprises me for a ludum dare. I actually paid off the lich because I was making so much from the seated groups and I wasn't too certain of just how much magic power would be needed from my only good group. Until the 6-person group arrived, I was actually pretty hard pressed to deal with him. I love this game visually and mechanically, and I think it's a great entry overall. I just wish that the money had more of a use beyond dealing with the lich, but in that regard his presence makes the game quite fitting to the theme. Just wish there were more threats you had to pay off or kill to protect the inn.
Well done! It was a simple game to pick up and learn, and complex enough to keep enjoying past the initial gameplay. The atmosphere was well-presented, good music and art. I loved it! Great job.
awesome awesome game! Everything is so good. I love the whole concept of the game, and it's complexity is really impressive for for a gamejam game. My only issues/question is if the undertaker was supposed to be assignable to quests? Because I was never able to give him one.

@nick-rafalski Thanks! And nope, The Undertaker is just an undertaker, there to drink some beers and bury whoever needs burying.
Why are there so few ratings? I spent at least an hour, I played two times in a row :) This is a great game! Small, but solid. Everything works great, the idea is interesting. Love it :)
Love it. Art is nice, idea is good, and it's a ton of fun to play +10
Oh dude, great idea. Chill music and nice gameplay, its easy to keep and play. Loved concept and mood, i think you can do much things with it, will you keep working on it? Ill be playing it later for sure :D. Great job!

I really like it! I played it through four times: the first time, playing it straight and just paying off the lich (since I wasn't getting anyone killed, the second time he showed up I didn't have the money); the second time, refusing twice in a row; the third time, focusing on trying to level up the Ruff Riders so they could go after the lich; and the fourth time, getting everyone killed.
Two things--in that first playthrough, even though I was careful not to get any adventurers killed (I never sent any on black skull/white skull quests), it still said I paid with "many souls", which felt a little unfair.
And the last playthrough... well, after I got everyone (except the messengers, obviously) killed, I decided to refuse the last payment to see what would happen, figuring that if I paid him off I'd get the same "paid in full" ending. Well, what happened is that I got the same "you have to pay off the debt now, I'll be back in twelve weeks" transition bit, and then the lich never came back. The game just went on indefinitely with the Undertaker and Dania continuing to come by. It does feel sort of appropriate!
ETA: Actually, it looks like, in general, if you make all the payments until the last one and then refuse that one, the lich says they'll come back, but then they never do, and the game can go on indefinitely. You can, at this point, still send adventurers on the A Debt Unpaid quest and potentially win that way.

@meltedeclipse Wow, you explored way more possibilities than I had time to write things for! :) Including finding a way to resolve it I had not expected, kudos! (getting all the money without sacrificing anyone)
There is a bug there in the last payment indeed, I will resolve that in a followup build. :)
There is so much here for a jam game. Honestly, its incredible. I would love to see this as a full game. Some of the text was a bit hard to read for me, and while the UI is a but awkward, after a little bit you get used to it. Love the flavor text on the objects around the inn.

Very nice take on the theme. The overall concept of the game is very cool and finely executed. There is some story elements that makes the experience much more rewarding. I really liked the art style, it suited the game so well and it was consistent throughout. The audio is very good and lends itself to the relaxed atmosphere of an inn and parties coming from and going to adventures.
I think for me the game was a bit on the easy side, since I passed it without going much into detail about the characters and how what group would be better suited to what quest, or did I just get lucky? I managed to pay the Lich and got the ending.
There is a very cool idea here which could grow into a decent indie game someday. Awesome job!
Wow! It's amazing how much you've done in such short time. Great writing, interesting characters, solid gameplay and quite a complex game, and you've nailed it. You've nailed it brilliantly. It took me a while to understand exactly what was going on and how to earn proper cash. I ended up just sending people to their death not really understanding the consequences of doing that.
Do you intend to keep working on it?
Huge congrats for the game, great job!

Good game, great storyline idea.
