A fun experience, it's dynamic as required by an action game.

This kind of game is hard to master, obviously, so here is a link for you if you want to go further (by the guy who did Nuclear Throne) :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJdEqssNZ-U

ttftcuts 2019-05-01 09:27

Surprisingly hard, gotta keep moving to avoid being totally overwhelmed! I didn't manage to beat the boss, but I did manage to reach it on my second try.

freso 2019-05-01 09:40

@xahell Thanks, interesting video! Will watch the whole thing later.

enigma 2019-05-01 10:09

Nice idea! However, the gun shots are too noisy(

jcklie 2019-05-01 10:26

I found it strange that I could not shoot without dying once first.

freso 2019-05-01 10:30

@jcklie Dying is trying! :D

jofersgames 2019-05-01 10:33

Fun game, but weird to have to run into an enemy to be able to buy a weapon xD

turbosocks 2019-05-01 10:42

Really fun, it got hard really quick! Well done!

weine 2019-05-01 10:45

@xahell, @ttftcust, @xahell, @enigma, @jofersgames: Thanks for trying the game out and for your comments!

I'll give a cookie to anyone who can win the game with the basic gun, without cheating. =)

blacklambert 2019-05-01 11:25

This game is fun to play. I somehow like the concept of the camera being attached the mouse curser. Also the indicators at the sides of the screen where to find the nests were quite helpful. But I can not see a situation where it's better to buy a weaker weapon instead of the assult rifle or the sniper rifle.

catangens 2019-05-01 17:32

That's one fun game (although controls are a bit sensitive)! Solid good job!

flightless 2019-05-01 18:15

I liked the exploding barrels and stopwatches!

fireslash 2019-05-01 18:42

Neat idea, but as others have said, the first life is always pretty confusing.

It's also not clear that there's any point in buying the weaker guns, or more than one gun, other than the challenge. Since ammo appears to be infinite, and tehre's no mechanic for gaining new lives, it's basically a one-time "which gun do I buy" decision. This makes it feel less interesting as a decision.

The camera is super nauseating. I'd probably anchor it to the player, or add a TON of lerp to make it less shakey.

Better unit AI and variety might spice things up a bit, but still pretty fun overall though.

nikos 2019-05-01 18:45

Really cool game! The controlls are a bit fast paced, and the game lacks a bit of juice, but the art style is intresting and the barrels are awesome!

jestemstefan 2019-05-01 19:04

You have 9 lives, but you need to die so 8 TBH :P You should gave me bow or knife for beggining.

Game was very engaging!

Also some mechanics to regain lives will be cool, because after buying a weapon there is no point in buying another one. You just lose life and nothing else really

pixscope 2019-05-01 20:46

This is cool !

kmazzio 2019-05-01 22:16

This game is really fun to play! I like the music, but the gun noises do get annoying after a while. Still, the fun factor is there for sure

sharks 2019-05-01 22:45

Fun game, personnally the camera movement made me sick. Not sure how to fix it tho. Other than that I had a good time playing it!

flying-dog-fish 2019-05-01 23:15

So you have 9 lives but you are not a cat.. this is confusing :cat:

mdwade 2019-05-01 23:48

This game was nice! Here's my notes:

- The player's collision works nice against angled walls and the like. Good job on that! - The weapon sprites look really well! - The music is sweet. - The camera moves too fast... It's instant, actually. I'd suggest adding some linear interpolation as the others have suggested. - The gunshots in some weapons (especially the shotgun) are too loud.

spirits 2019-05-02 00:36

Nice game! At the beginning I was kind of confused since I had no guns until like two minutes from playing when I died jaja. Overall it is a great game!

1samuel411 2019-05-02 04:53

That was really hard. It was confusing trying to figure out how to open the buy menu though.

zax 2019-05-02 08:39

this is really cool ! , keep it up!

nnnnneeeedddd 2019-05-02 13:23

Found it odd that the camera translation moved with the mouse. Usually camera translation moves with player movement, and only player rotation is adjusted with the mouse. It might just be something I have to get used to though. The gameplay is fun. However, the idea based around the theme is the obvious one to go for. One of the first ideas that pops into everyones head when they see "your life is currency" is buy items with health, but this is just frustrating. Goal 1 in every game should be to save life. Anyway, thanks for making this, it was still quite fun to play :D. Hope to see you next Ludum Dare!

angiemon 2019-05-02 16:13

That was really surprisingly hard and challenging :D music was also good. Liked the upgrades idea :) Good job :D What's I felt was kinda missing was some kind of indicator where to go or what to do next, I didn't know if I had to kill every enemy or if they just respawn and I need to get to the boss ASAP?

seizethedia 2019-05-02 17:23

Super tough! Those damned reds! Good shooting mechanic, shots all felt like they were going where I wanted them to. The bombs were very satisfying! Moving the camera with the mouse became a bit disorienting, like suggested above this could be fixed by slowing it down or giving it some offset value so it's not precisely locked to the mouse position, giving it a bit of room to move the mouse before actually moving the cam. Good job!

juhani-koskinen 2019-05-02 18:38

A Challenging, yet quite fun game! The controls seemed polished and the music gave a bit more "actiony" feeling to the game. Well done!

neowedge 2019-05-02 19:10

Good experience. Game feeling could be improved (smooth camera, impact effects and shakes), and final boss is too difficult, but I like that you have a goal (it's reminds me the hols in Gears of War) and it was funny to played if. God job!

jonas-tyroller 2019-05-02 20:26

Nice concept. Would have been enough to show the shop once at the beginning cause it doesn't really make sense to buy more after that. Would have been cool to have a couple more enemy types that encourage you to buy 2 or 3 guns. The best strategy here is to just buy one in my opinion. I know it's hard to balance these games out in such a short amount of time, though. Big props that you even managed to squeeze in an epic boss fight at the end. Nice!

yaen 2019-05-02 20:28

Wow, that's a pretty tough game! I couldn't beat it after several tries but I generally enjoyed my time playing it. In no small part due to the kickass soundtrack! Unfortunately the rest of the sound design didn't do it for me. I don't get the appeal of loud, crunchy 8-bit sounds, especially if the game doesn't otherwise have an 8-bit aesthetic. It's just hard to listen to and decreases any kind of mood the game might otherwise have had.

The camera was quite tough to work with for me since it moved around so erratically with my aim. A smoother blend would have been cool, I think.

captaindreamcast 2019-05-02 21:00

AWW YEAAHHH, LAST LIFE AND FULLY SURROUNDED BY ENEMIES COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORY!

Took me a few tries to figure out a good strategy. Mine was to buy the sniper rifle and collect as many time stops as possible to stop the enemies from swarming at the end (they still did, but it was manageable). It turned into a bullet hell near the end, very intense. Loved the hype gameplay you crafted, as the capslock opening probably gave away, definitely had me sweating, great job!

shaolin-dave 2019-05-02 22:29

graphics were good, i LOVE the music and sound effects. controls were almost perfect. theme-wise i think you interpreted it a lot better than most, and i like the risk/reward balance. the barrels exploding bullets into all directions seems like a clever way to quickly implement area damage. it works well here, but if you continue working on this later i might suggest a different effect (and probably player damage, too). Only major flaw I saw was that there was no player feedback when the next was being damaged, but I'm sure that was just a time restraint thing. Good job!

freso 2019-05-03 08:49

Hey everyone. Thanks for all input! **Cheat code time!**

The game might be a little hard. We didn't have time to polish and balance it enough and therefore, we left in a little cheat code, for you. :)

To immediately wipe out all nests and get to the boss fight, press k! The boss fight itself is almost another game. New music and hard boss!

And wow, so many commenters! Special greet to @captaindreamcast who actually made it. Well done!

nnnnneeeedddd 2019-05-03 21:06

@freso I gave the game two more stars for the cheat code ;)

potatolain 2019-05-04 20:51

Not much to say that hasn't been said already; this was a good challenge, without feeling impossible. I did appreciate that the cheat code was added so that I could see the boss, even though I didn't quite devote enough time to get there legitimately.

I quite enjoyed this; thanks for a fun entry.

caleb 2019-05-07 05:29

Good entry! Hitting the nests could use a bit more feedback -- at first I didn't think I was doing anything until it suddenly popped.

Thew core idea of using lives to upgrade is great, but the limited number of lives made it difficult to explore all of the weapons. Perhaps a marathon mode, starting with 100 lives, would allow players to experiment more. Newer players could give themselves a buff using their lives while experienced players might want to be conservative to make it to the end.

kingslee142 2019-05-07 22:14

Good fun game, well done. The combination a player movement with the keyboard, and shooting and camera with a mouse did make me a bit dizzy. However, overall the game perfectly fits the theme and it has a cool graphic

derek-volker 2019-05-10 22:12

ALMOST MADE IT. But died on the boss.

I really dig twin stick shooters and this one doesnt disappoint. The use of the theme is expected as we saw in many games on this jam, but still is clever, better weapons less chances to die. Also, i guess the spiner rifle is the only choice, the others didnt seem as effective as it, but still is nice that not only you guys deliver a game but one with support to different styles of playing and replay value.

The only downside i can see is the graphics, they really deserved a little more polishing, considering all the other aspects in the game. For example, it didnt really matches the awesome music of the game.

Anyway, is an impressive work. Excellent job!

jk5000 2019-05-12 13:07

This is overall a pretty fun little top-down shooter.

coleslaughter 2019-05-16 04:05

Neat idea but reeeeeaaaaaallly really hard!

I was basically worthless if I wasn't perpetually stopping time every opportunity I got. And the fact that the little baddies kept coming during the final boss made it pretty much impossible for me to beat it. :(

My strategy was pretty much to die immediately (which is a little counterintuitive because you HAVE to) and buy the SMG. Every other gun felt way too underpowered for me, considering how many enemies were always on the screen at once.

Still, it's rare that a game has me strategizing like this, so kudos for that. This is a pretty impressive entry.

z0rlog 2019-05-19 17:45

Nice shooter game! Weapon balance could be improved, was expecting AK47 to have more power and shoot speed. Overall good job!

anandhi 2019-05-21 11:02

The games art was nice and simple but was quite hard and challenging.
