Aug 14 02:12:23 Beat These Games! ♥ 1 This game could be describing my own pile of shame T_T A very clever take on the theme, well done! (I laughed the first time I failed). You packed a lot of content here with a decently sized collection of micro games, although I got the impression that a couple of them were reskins of the same mechanic. Also, if you let the pile of games grow larger as I did it could end up feeling a bit repetitive. Despite these minor issues, I really liked the game, it felt really solid. Congrats!!
Aug 14 02:36:48 24m 25s Bag Man ♥ 0 Nice take on the theme! Like others, I also had a few issues with the jump at first -felt too tight- but other than that it was quite solid overall, good job! Out of curiosity...Does the generator ensure that there are no dead ends? For example, on my first run I ended up dying because I fell to the lower floor and couldn't find a way up to reach a new bag (I moved back and forth a bit, so perhaps I just didn't survive enough to find another bag below, or the air column).
Aug 14 11:15:21 8h 38m Full Stack Combat ♥ 0 You've got the seeds for an interesting combat system here. It would be great to see it developed further (I'm thinking of things like character classes and synergies between cards and characters -maybe this is already there?, or how you coud weave some patterns while selecting battle elements for cool combos). Getting extra cards when you defeat an enemy felt quite rewarding too. Were those cards random as well, or predetermined depending on the creep / stage? Some clearer feedback would be nice to see when you're attacked or what effects your own attacks had on the enemies, and especially when you beat a stage: the button at the bottom right isn't obvious enough and cards were still falling down. Oh, and nice catchy tune! (since it's the only track it can become repetitive, but I really liked the retro vibe) Great job!
Aug 14 11:33:14 17m 53s Popcorn Mayhem ♥ 1 Great take on the theme! πŸ˜„ In the end I sort of got used to the controls, but I frequently got the impression that they were as much of an obstacle as the popcorn blob itself. In a way it contributed to the tension (omfg, the last level with the stairs!), but they certainly could use some improvements. I'm not sure if this was intended or emergent behaviour caused by the physics, but in some cases I felt I could use the popcorn to my own advantage. I was only able to get some glimpses of it before being crushed half a second later, but I think this might be a really cool feature ("Ride the wave!"). Nice job!
Aug 14 14:18:49 2h 45m Pianobots ♥ 0 This is really original! It takes a while to try all combinations (probably someone with a better ear can pick up the required key changes faster) and find one that sounds well, and I got hooked. As expected, the rest of the sound design overall is really solid, with the audience reactions, and graphics are well done and functional. Congrats!
Aug 15 00:56:39 10h 37m Downscaled ♥ 1 Great entry! The device downscale idea adds some flavour to the theme usage, and I liked that graphics updated accordingly as you progressed. Music and sound were fitting too. Gameplay-wise, the main mechanic is simple and very effective, although I have to say that I neglected the rolling option at the beginning (and I justly regretted it as soon as I got to the results screen). Once I got the hang of it the game just clicked and I got hooked. Congratulations, this feels really solid! :)
Aug 15 18:21:56 17h 25m PLS Grandma STAPH ♥ 1 You've probably got on the wrong side of grandmas worldwide now you've discovered their secret plan. Jokes aside, I really liked your game. It's funny, the inventory management mechanic is both addictive and tense as you try to optimise the space in your stomach to shove all that food down, and it feels really polished in terms of graphic and sound. The granny's ninja appearances are hilarious. The only odd thing I've noticed is that dropping items on the grid doesn't always detect a cell even if in theory it should, which can be frustrating at times. Not sure if it could be because I'm playing on a relatively small window. For example, on the screencap the cursor (Windows didn't feel in the mood for capturing it, it seems) was roughly in the center of the bacon: glitch.png Other than this, everything works really smooth. Congrats! PS: 8.6kg :)
Aug 16 02:08:36 7h 46m Baggage Claim ♥ 1 Great take on the theme! The 5 seconds limit can be a bit stressful and some of the sound effects may eventually become grating, but overall everything works together nicely. The first time you manage to take a suitcase to a matching passenger feels wonderfully! Good job! :D
Aug 16 02:20:07 11m 31s Claustrophobia ♥ 1 Nice take on the theme! It was short but very enjoyable (I really liked that you had to take enemy paths into account while caring for your own limited life), with great visuals. Some sound would have been the icing on the cake. Congrats!
Aug 16 02:50:24 30m 17s Uninstall ♥ 1 Cute take on the theme, with nice art style and some great music. More micro games would probably have been nice, since it was a bit short, but in its current state the game already feels pretty solid. Good job!
Aug 16 12:00:24 9h 10m Super Tetron ♥ 1 Nice take on the theme (Tetris-related mechanics are a natural fit), with some good minimalistic execution. Puzzles are well thought and put your mind to work. The ability to flip the pieces besides rotating them adds another layer of depth. This could be easily developed further into a full game, the core is already solid and really engaging. Well done!
Aug 17 17:16:07 29h 15m Blocks ♥ 1 Simple and effective take on the theme. It definitely needs some work on controls (specially the jump) and the collisions against the blocks, but for a 5-hour game you packed a lot of stuff and the key mechanics are clear. Well done!
Aug 17 21:28:05 4h 11m Mars Web ♥ 1 Brilliant game! It was quite immersive (The Wix banner did break it a bit, but I like to interpret it as if the real Marsweb company, an interplanetary ISP, actually relied on that service to host their website, and that touch of absurdity works great for me) and the way you wove together different media and puzzles was really original. I love games where the narrative is combined with gameplay, and you did a fine job. The puzzles were interesting as well. The main challenge was in finding the information to solve them, and that was super rewarding. After that they were relatively straightforward, although one of them might require additional knowledge that might confuse non-tech-savvy people. The connection to the theme was a bit loose, but other than that this is one of the best entries I've played so far on this edition (and probably the others I've taken part in) ld42_marswebcc.PNG 😎
Aug 17 22:45:54 1h 17m Cybatron ♥ 2 Amazing game! Super polished in all aspects, the core mechanic is simple and at the same time strong, and the progression is smoothly balanced. The game pretty much teaches you as you proceed through the levels with no other crutch than the titles. I can easily imagine this game as a released product, congrats for a brilliant entry!.
Aug 17 23:23:07 37m 13s Introvert vs. Extrovert ♥ 1 I really liked the take on the theme. I was expecting more games dealing with personal/social space, and so far I think this is the first. Music was also cheerful and put me in a good mood. The core mechanic with the asymmetric gameplay is very interesting. On single player it was pretty easy, I didn't even need to use the dash or the barriers for either player type (at first I wasn't even aware of that). I couldn't play PVP but I can easily imagine it becoming pretty fun as both players try to chase/evade each other :) The main issue I found was that I tried to play as P2 but couldn't unless I changed the keyboard layout to a different language. Apparently the semicolon was nowhere to be found on my original layout. Perhaps the arrow keys could have been a more standard choice. As for graphics, they're clear, but overall I got the impression that the art style was a bit inconsistent, each element having a completely different style from the others. Despite these things the gameplay is quite promising and you have the seeds for a really fun game. Nice job!
Aug 17 23:35:30 12m 23s Inventory Story ♥ 1 The idea is brilliant, and I really liked the graphics πŸ˜ƒ As for gameplay, I think relying so heavily in physics made the game awkward to play -at least on Windows. Sometimes I would try to drop an item and would be picked instead, or was trying to move it to the weapon rack only to see it fall. In any case, there's quite a bunch of content here for a 3-day game. If you can polish this for a post-jam version the core mechanic is super promising. Good job, keep at it!
Aug 18 00:17:26 41m 56s CRAMMM: Totally Accurate Studying Simulator ♥ 1 Wow, impressive amount of quality content for a compo game. I love the vector graphic style, it looks cute, it's easy to read and IMO it really suits the game. Sound design and music also felt quite polished, although I agree with other commenters that music can become repetitive (but to be fair, since this happens to lots of jam games including my own, I believe that time constraints make it hard to come with some music that just fits exactly the length of the experience unless you can have someone on the team dedicated to that). Some things about the gameplay: * Regarding controls and brain-words interaction, I was a bit frustrated by the physics-based gameplay and the RNG. In some cases you would suddenly be flooded with a lot of long words and your attempts to carefully pick up the words and organise the brain went down the drain, so the best bet was to just discard a lot of concepts. There were also a couple of occasions where one long word would get stuck on one side, as "Puerto Rico" on the screenshot. It would rotate a bit, but there was no way to get rid of it. ld42_cramm_bug.PNG * Besides this, I wasn't really sure about what was the condition that caused the "danger" trigger to be fired, in some cases the brain didn't really looked that packed. * I appreciated that you had to give some thought to whether a word would actually be relevant or not, but Trumpology in particular is a bit hard as a non-American, mostly because of proper nouns that might not be particularly well known outside the US. The subject was hilarious, but I had to double check a couple words. These things aside, the whole package feels really tight and the concept is really funny. Congrats!
Aug 18 00:32:50 15m 24s Space Goats 2 ♥ 1 The intro sold me completely πŸ˜†, and the cute wacky graphics kept me smiling for the whole run. The music track was pretty cool, too, and it was really fitting as I was trying to escape from Jim and avoid the space vikings. Gameplay was short and simple, but it worked well, no major bugs or glitches I can remember. Very solid entry, nice job!
Aug 18 01:14:09 41m 19s CLAUSTRO ♥ 1 Loved the eerie atmosphere on this one, with minimalistic graphics and sound working great together. A small detail I really liked (once that I understood it) was how the mouse direction was represented on the "cursor" key. The mechanic adds a nice twists to other word games like crosswords or scrabble, and it was quite relaxing to play. Awesome entry!
Aug 18 02:44:04 1h 29m Not enough [ SPACE ] ♥ 0 Unusual take on the theme, nice! The concept is fine, but I got the impression that the countdown timer's accuracy was a bit off sometimes. Other than that, the mechanic is simple and oddly addicting. Congrats on your first web-based game! :D
Aug 18 18:43:44 15h 59m Edgy Fantasy Battle Deluxe ♥ 3 I really liked how the terrain adds a strategic/puzzle layer to typical JRPG combat mechanics (having magic either remove or transform tiles can have some really cool implications) and also serves as the obvious tie to the theme. You have something very promising here! Besides this, the art style is lovely, music brings you back to the super epic boss battles of the classics from the genre, and everything in general seems super polished. And last but not least, the narrative is wacky and subverts some of JRPG's cliches with some welcome absurdity. Well done! This is one of the best jam games I've played so far, congratulations!!
Aug 18 19:03:48 20m 04s Cat Lady Simulator ♥ 2 So many cats... *_* I definitely felt I was running out of space with this game πŸ˜… . Graphics were clear and cute, progression was well thought and everything in general was really polished. My only bit of feedback would be to increase slightly the detection area to drop the food on the bowls, sometimes it took some adjusting so it could be detected. Great entry!
Aug 18 19:33:29 29m 41s Tiny Kingdom Builder ♥ 1 I love this entry! Pleasant aesthetics and a core gameplay that's simple yet extremely addictive and well executed. Feedback was clear, even if I did have to check the tutorial to see what were the exact conditions for the map "flush" after my first game, and everything in generall is really polished, with cute small details such as the clouds on the main screen. While it has a strategic component and a timer, the overall experience is quite relaxed, I quickly got into the zone playing. ld42-tkb.PNG You've done an amazing job, congrats!
Aug 18 20:45:26 1h 11m Bomb Factory ♥ 2 So addicting! I reached 10K once, now I'm stuck at 3K at best >_< Great entry, fitting the theme really well and super polished for a compo submission. Mechanics are pretty clever mechanics: seemingly simple, but there's more to them, adding some more depth. Awesome job, congrats!
Aug 18 20:58:57 13m 31s The Subway: horror within ♥ 1 I'm not saying anything new here, but wow, the visual quality is among the highest I've seen so far. The premise of the game is a funny take on the theme and it works great! Gameplay is simple but engaging, and coupled with the music it creates quite a tense mood as you wait for the next timer to let you gain some space while building up to the rage button to fill and add a gory, hilarious icing on the cake. Awesome entry, congrats!
Aug 18 23:54:30 2h 55m Cluttered Mind ♥ 1 It may not have super complex mechanics, but it doesn't really need to. I really enjoyed the experience, each change felt as rewarding as it was disturbing. Sound design in particular really struck a chord (no pun intended): it was subtle and the repetition added up to the unsettling mood. Awesome job!
Aug 20 00:32:47 24h 38m Crystalmancer ♥ 0 I loved this game!. To me the connection to the theme is clear as soon as you start spamming projectiles, and I found it was a pretty clever usage. Gameplay is fun and solid, and the polish in both art and audio is enviable, I loved the retro aesthetics. The music in particular is so catchy it sticks around after you stop playing the game. Still trying to beat it though, those spiders are soooo annoying. Congrats, you've pulled out a brilliant entry! :D
Aug 20 00:57:43 24m 56s TrackBlasters ♥ 1 The graphics and sound are perfect (but I agree that a finish line would be nice ;D), loved them to bits. The core idea is hilarious and a brilliant usage of the theme, but I got a bit frustrated sometimes at the fall detection if you moved close to the edges of the world (although that added difficulty is kind of the point of the game, on the other hand). Finishing the multiplayer mode and perhaps adding some special powers to give you some extra meat beyond trying to avoid the gaps would be nice additions to a really promising game. Congrats!
Aug 20 01:20:53 23m 10s Zachary's Memory ♥ 1 Beautiful and emotional entry... Music has a melancholic vibe that suits the tone and the narrative perfectly, with clear, detailed graphics. I loved the "connected memories" mechanic in addition to the limited space, I found that the core idea was very original and powerful, not to mention that it fits the theme perfectly. It would be interesting to see what each of us used for labels. I sucked at it, unfortunately, but it's pretty late now and I want to try it again tomorrow. One of my favourite entries so far, congratulations! PS: I spotted a few typos on the English version, that would be my only complain.
Aug 20 22:39:16 21h 18m ROOSTER EXPRESS ♥ 1 I also got the chaotic vibes from Overcooked. If this is already stressful as a single player game, I can't imagine it being multiplayer XD You've nailed the presentation, with polished graphics and some catchy sound and music. The take on the theme was clear, and I think it works great. As for gameplay, I found it a bit rough in some aspects. The most frustrating bit to me was probably the inspect mode being somewhat dependent on the player position on the scene (?). I had to move around, drop the package and pick it again to see if it was reset and I could see the labels (or rotate it) properly. Also, because of the physics it was hard sometimes to drop items, as they would fall or get stuck and you would have to keep picking it again (this happened a lot when burning round-ish items). The package spawn rate felt a bit too much in terms of balancing, but since the "win" condition is -I guess- to keep the boss relatively happy before the timer runs out, it adds up to the overall tension of the level, which is a good thing. I'm sure these things can be improved or fixed and everything else already works, so keep at it! You've got a really cool and promising game! Congrats!! :D
Aug 20 22:51:49 12m 33s A Blob's Life ♥ 1 The blob mechanic is brilliant! I love the way the blob moves and the snake-with-a-twist mechanics, with different rivals. I did have to read the instructions a second time to learn I could also eat enemies. It was interesting that mushrooms had diminishing returns to increase size, forcing you to smother and play aggressively on a shrinking world with the pink guy lurking around. Speaking of which, in some cases as soon as it found me I couldn't do anything else but wait for the end and play again, which felt a bit frustrating. Really solid entry, specially for a compo game. Great job!
Aug 21 21:43:56 22h 52m The Not Very Golden Age of Piracy ♥ 2 This was pretty much flawless and could easily be considered a final game. My only complain, relatively minor, is the fact that babies are deselected when you issue an action, forcing you to click on them again even if the most likely next step is to have that baby do something else (for example, get ball -> take ball to cannon). The mechanic is solid again to work fine without that added friction: It might feel smoother to keep them selected by default, and if you want to switch to a different kid you could then do that afterwards. With this said, now come the good things, which is pretty much everything: * The game concept feels really original, challenging and fits the theme perfectly. As for controls, they're quite intuitive. * Humor and mood also shine because of the absurd setting (pirate babies vs chicken β™₯️β™₯️β™₯️) amazingly coupled with the super polished visuals and sound. The narrator is a brilliant addition! Congratulations! I think this is the first game on this edition I've given a full, perfect score so far! PS: I've only managed to sink 4 ships T_T
Aug 23 22:23:17 48h 39m Catching Sushi! ♥ 2 Graphics are from the best I've seen this edition, those sushi pieces are so cute I will probably feel guilty the next time I order some for dinner. Together with the audio design the mood is fittingly cheerful :D Even if the theme connection is a bit loose and I didn't worry about the score, the gameplay is quite smooth and relaxing. Good job!
Aug 23 22:25:35 2m 18s Get Comfortable ♥ 0 Cute and funny concept! I really liked the different ways limbs and bodies could interact.
Aug 26 04:00:42 53h 35m Get Off My Lawn ♥ 1 My lawn, my beautiful lawn 😭 You've come up with a hilarious take on the theme with great music and solid graphics. I really liked the visual design of the different beans (starting by the grumpy player character, loved it!) I managed to survive for 62 waves, although the second half was mostly a fight against time to keep a couple of patches. Those damn towel guys were the worst! A great entry, congrats! πŸ˜ƒ PS: I had a similar idea for LD32, but with a fed up teacher in high school.
Aug 26 04:40:21 39m 39s XORN: The Fallen God ♥ 2 Really solid, you've paid attention to a lot of details for a jam game. Some of them could be improved (aiming, for instance, is a bit tricky because of the character model making difficult to tell the angle despite the white arrow), but overall you've pulled a great entry. Sound and graphics fit well with each other, and I like the mechanics overall, even if I haven't been able to progress a lot yet. Good work!
Aug 26 12:33:36 7h 53m Reasonable Claustrophobia ♥ 1 Wow, the level of polish is amazing, and gameplay echoes retro games with a nice twist that adds some depth, I really liked that you could actually use the decreasing space to defeat some enemies. This could easily become a full game. Brilliant work!
Aug 26 12:56:47 23m 11s Mitosis ♥ 1 The idea fits the theme really well and graphics are nice. Gameplay is simple, but there are some strategic choices involved in picking the next division that add some depth. The HUD got in the way on the last moves, and it seemed that there wasn't an end condition after filling the board. I got let expecting more levels (with more mutations, for example, or unexpected effects) or at least the ability to restart the game. It has some promising elements. Keep up the good work!
Aug 26 13:30:43 33m 56s Apparatus ♥ 1 I'm loving this so far! I've had to restart a couple of times because I got stuck, but it was early enough that I didn't mind at all. On the contrary, there was an "A-ha!" moment attached to every "Oh sh*t!", and validating those a-ha's on the next run felt awesome (not sure if I'll say the same if I need to do the same after half an hour or switch to table flipping mode, though πŸ˜…). Graphics are clear (Having both controls on different areas on the HUD looked a bit odd at first, but after trying the pull/push myself everything was clear), sound doesn't feel out of place and the controls work smoothly, no weird precision or collision issues at all. I think you've done a great job at your Zachlike attempt (and it's really addicting, this combination of discovery, crafting and space management works great!). Amazing entry, congrats!
Aug 26 14:02:40 31m 57s Hachi Block ♥ 1 I liked how relaxing the placement rules compared to puyo puyo/tetris-style mechanics adds a different vibe to the game while still preserving the urgency to clear the board. Nice touch! Aesthetics were quite smooth and polished, even if the music could become a bit repetitive at times. These games can get you into the zone easily, and yours was no exception. Great work!
Aug 26 14:27:40 25m 00s Demotrash ♥ 1 I managed to score an 11 chain in normal mode and it felt amazing. Then I switch to hell and didn't last so much on my third run. Great entry! The concept is simple but works really well and fits the theme like a glove, and everything feels quite solid overall (bloating + exploding in particular was really well done). Nice job!
Aug 26 22:29:27 8h 01m Shrinkage ♥ 1 Interesting take on Tetris with nice, minimalistic graphics. If you're aware of the rules the 1-line penalty is a good incentive to try to remove more lines in one move. However, it also becomes unforgiving once you've made a mistake, so in tricky situations the fastest path to safety (remove gaps and other stuff as fast as possible) adds some extra stress on the player.
Aug 27 12:59:51 14h 30m Ice Interstice ♥ 1 Great entry! I liked the mechanic a lot, it fit the theme and was deeper than it might appear at first sight. The puzzles were well thought and paced, and both graphics and sound/music were cute. I love the penguin <3 I didn't have issues restarting the level, was that updated? Overall it feels really solid, and there are probably lots of ways to expand it should you keep working on it. One of the best compo entries I've tried so far, congrats!
Aug 29 15:54:13 50h 54m Above Lava ♥ 1 Really cool idea, the concept is pretty clever and it fits the theme well! I think the graphics work mostly fine, although it would be nice to have an indicator of where the player is pointing at. The shoot + jump to push is often hard to get right because of it. It's a really nice first entry, good job!
Aug 29 16:10:52 16m 39s Matrice ♥ 0 There are lots of things yet to polish for sure (theme fit, turning felt a bit stiff at times, the goal, etc), but you've got a really promising idea here, and the music is really catchy. Time/scope management is probably the hardest challenge on a jam game, at least it still is for me, but you'll surely improve over time. In the meantime it will be a good motivation if you expand the game into what you had designed it to be originally. Keep at it!
Aug 29 16:35:05 24m 13s the Sorter ♥ 0 The game fits the theme well, and the mechanics are pretty simple and easy to learn. I agree with the other commenter that controls could be better explained for people who don't want to spend time to figure them out, motion isn't smooth and the balls' attachment to the player could use some polish. If you polish those things you could have an interesting little game here. Keep at it! :D
Aug 31 07:42:27 39h 07m Stack Overflow ♥ 0 Good entry! I liked how the pace increases steadily, making it more challenging. I noticed that the arrow-colour mappings change with each game, and then thought it could be interesting to do that inside the game at specific times to give a bit more variety. Also, a pretty straightforward interpretation of the theme. Nice job overall! :D
Aug 31 20:04:55 12h 22m Windoge 96 ♥ 1 Much virus. Very windows. Wow. Now seriously, even though I'm not generally a huge fan of meme-based games I have a soft spot for Doge, and your entry is really nice πŸ˜ƒ I liked how the art mimics the old Window systems and especially how well the minigames fit given the context. Β‘Felicidades!
Aug 31 20:23:12 18m 17s 20000 Leaks Under the Sea ♥ 2 I'm loving it as much as it's frustrating me πŸ˜… You've made a super solid entry in all areas (except for the poor submarine, constantly breaking and all that πŸ˜‰). Graphics are nice, the colour palette gives me a pleasant feeling even as I'm running up and down to weld all those cracks. Same with the music, it is calming. I've lost a couple of times so far, so let's see if third time's charm. Great job!
Aug 31 20:31:58 8m 46s Engulfed ♥ 1 Great take on the theme! I liked the visuals and gameplay worked well in general, although as others have mentioned I would have preferred that both the player and the enemy ships moved consistently. Moving in steps made it difficult sometimes to arrive to the fast ships. The sound effects at first were a bit higher than expected, I had to minimize the game, reset it and lower it a bit on the OS. A nice plus you have here is the potential. Having variety on how enemies behave is already there, so I'll go with some powerups too (from weapon types to stat buffs, or perhaps some way to reverse the space limitation a bit,...) Well done!
Aug 31 20:45:48 13m 50s Grimder ♥ 0 Some of the texts are hilarious πŸ˜† Nice take on Tind...the theme, and lovely art style. It can get repetitive eventually, though, but it feels super solid in terms of polish. Great job!
Aug 31 22:17:06 1h 31m Void Incoming ♥ 1 Wow, great entry, I'm loving it so far! While the concept may not be super original and bar a couple of "arrgh" moments because of the collision detection, it's really well executed. I really like the visuals and the fitting sounds that accompany it, but the level design is the key here. Levels are challenging and require some timing to avoid those ***** cannon balls (although in terms of progression sometimes latter levels felt easier than the previous ones). You've also packed a lot of content to keep us entertained for a while, congrats for an amazing work!
Sep 2 16:26:13 42h 09m Gravity Hook ♥ 0 Quite challenging in a good way πŸ˜ƒ Controls work and feel smooth, and in general the level difficulty pacing has been fair so far, it is really satisfying to find yourself slowly improving over a level (Currently scratching my head over level 8). A really cool concept with a more than decent amount of content for a compo game. Congrats!
