Where am I? by Benn 2011-01-15T23:48:00
Clever idea, and well done! I think adding a tiny bit of momentum to the "player" would make the controls feel a bit nicer though.
And that sound is definitely from an old version of FL Studio, no?

I like this game as well, but I ran into the rocketjump wall glitch multiple times and finally gave up... then I read your walkthrough and it sounds like I was trying go somewhere I shouldn't be. I like the audio, and the controls remind me of Super Meat Boy from the little bit that I've played.
Ah! I actually enjoy this a lot. Spring physics are always fun, and you somehow made launching triangles into polygons very satisfying. It would be nice with levels that got increasingly more difficult (maybe).
Oh man, this is great! I don't know why I waited this long to try it. (I played the post-comp version.) I like the graphics and audio, and the gameplay is fast and usually smooth (and does remind me of Jazz Jackrabbit!) Personally I think this deserves a higher spot in the results! Good job man.
Frustratingly though, I got stuck in a cloud right before the boss! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v634/kenmo/heaven.png
Nice debut - it becomes a sort of reflex/memory game pretty quickly.
Some simple sound effects would be nice. Can't be too difficult to add, can it? I've never used GameMaker, it is on my long list of software to mess around with some day...
I have a soft spot for audio generators, especially oddball ones like this. With some more features, such as changing the speeds of individual minions, this could be expanded into a very diverse 'game'! It's fun - but like Gobo said, where does the theme come in?
The clouds and tornado actually look pretty stylish... the look is cool, if only the character wasn't a spread-eagle stick figure!
Awesome job. Amazing style as everyone has said. The abrupt camera took me out of the moment sometimes though... and the whole thing was a little slow in Firefox, especially during the Appy transitions. Fantastic overall! (Definitely reminds me of the game Eversion - have you played it?)
Well done! I like the look and feel of it, and the characters. It just needs some more ending/difficulty (the tasks seemed to get easier, rather than harder!) and you've got a cool little game here.
@Petzi -- Finally some criticism! :)
"It's really hard to actually aim the weapons, so most of the time they just get you killed when you try to use them instead of dodging the enemies." - I agree. Some sort of aiming assistance or indicator would be useful. Otherwise, unless you have one of the better weapons, it's safer to just play defensively.
"the background is terrible" - Bad? Yes. Terrible? Maybe. It was just the quickest background I could implement that gave a sense of movement. Another game I'm working on has the same issue - my friend tested it, and thought the background were objects he could jump on to...
"I expected the enemies to catch on fire and scream horrifically" - Loonadrift 2?
"it was just a little side-scroller like millions of others" - Yep, I know, I resisted it at first but gave in. Not expecting a high Innovation score here...
@everyone -- This was my first competition entry ever (entered the jam once before) and I am surprised by the positive feedback! Thanks to everyone who played!
PS. My personal record is 930.9 ABU - good luck beating that.
I get this error, after installing XNA: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v634/kenmo/xna.png :(
Bonus points for customer service... Non-hi-def works for me, and it was totally worth it! Best storyline I've come across yet this LD. I like the style of humor, graphics, and music -- I think you'd like my game actually.
I didn't have any glitches, and the audio was fine for me, on XP. Although the particles did lag me a bit too. But otherwise, it was enjoyable and extra funny for me, since I was about to go "mingle at a coffee shop" :D
I played it with the keyboard at first too - much better with mouse. I also thought (for no real reason) you were supposed to lead the missiles to hit the planet... then I re-read the instructions. Good game, once I played it right!
I was pretty bad at this game, but I wanted to finish it... so I hope you don't mind that I made the following changes to my saved game file :)
Clfoufroup=10
Rchickenlobananad=4
Hchickenbananalth=10
Shotgubanana=1
Chbananargchickengubanana=1
Not bad, just needs some more variety! I played past level 20 expecting the map or enemies or weapons to change... (PS. The text counters in the top-right overlap on my computer, probably because I don't have whatever font you try to load.)
Entirely worth the challenge. Clever and hilarious.
I Like Like it.
Pretty challenging. I'm not sure but I THINK I took a few hits that were unavoidable... or maybe I just haven't fully gotten the controls down yet.
Nice job all around - the gameplay and levels are pretty solid, the theme is there in multiple ways, and the graphics and audio are plenty polished for 48 hours.
The Victory and Failure banners (and the victory music) seem out of place though... they made me think of 90s racing games :)
This is the kind of idea that can either turn out hilarious or utterly awful. Luckily it turned out hilarious. Great job, it's like the sarcastic younger Ludum Dare brother of Mario Party.
I've beaten them all but the boss, I'm tired of mashing my spacebar. And I wish it had audio, but otherwise, it's great!
The physics were buggy sometimes (does Unity have built-in physics? I haven't used it) but this looks great and the game is fun -- it's fun enough just to cut everything up!
The 'escape' theme is sort of there... since you have to 'escape' each level... but it could be used more. And technically you shouldn't be using anyone else's audio in a compo entry, even if it is background noise.
And one miniscule bug: the jump sound plays when you hit W even if you are in the air!
Source is included with the game, I'll mention that.
(?) That link works fine for me... but I uploaded it elsewhere and changed the link just to be safe.
Yeah, the mouse control has felt 'wrong' to me since the beginning... I have uploaded a post-comp version that shows the cursor (which definitely helps) and adds a hotkey to reduce draw detail.
Don't rate this version! These are technically new features.
Thanks for the feedback guys. The levels were made hastily, so the difficulty is probably too high (which sucks, since there is an 'ending' of sorts).
There are basically one or two specific ways to beat the harder levels, and until you figure them out, it's probably frustrating...
Shigor - if you read this - could you retry the post-comp version? I uploaded another version which should fix the screen bug that happens on some specific video cards. The controls are slightly better in windowed mode since the cursor should now be visible. (You can try Tab too.)
Gameplay aside, I was happy with the theme and surprised there aren't more similar games. When "Escape" was announced, I assumed 50% of games would involve the player trying to escape a place, 25% would involve trying to STOP something from escaping, and 25% would involve escaping something abstract (like everyday life, etc). I went with the middle type :)
The Windows link goes to Recipe.txt now...?
Another great increpare puzzler, more dark increpare humor... unfortunately I didn't submit and can't rate this time. Well done.
Totally off-topic and nerdy... but moving the dogs around Level #14 made me think of semiconductors... "it's not the electrons; it's the holes between them"... sorry :)
I hate to point it out, but since you submitted to the competition and not the 72-hour jam, all content is supposed to be made by you within 48 hours... AKA no Kevin MacLeod songs (as much as we all love royalty free music).
@lordjoseph -- OK maybe I misunderstood. (I would edit my comment if I could find a way to!)
I do like the look and feel of the game, but it was too difficult for me to get very far on my first attempt, I will try again tonight!
Like others have said, I like this but I haven't been able to beat it yet! (I will try again later with a real mouse.)
I do enjoy the style and gameplay. The controls are tricky for me because the cursor quickly becomes hard to see in all the enemies.
