LD46 — Keep it alive

Burned by the Poi by Risist 2020-04-21T14:59:15Z

I found your game quite pleasing. The "weeeeeee" effect of spinning around with the fire balls is great. The lights are obviously very well handled and settle an intriguing mood. I think your game could do with a clearer goal though : If you have to spill a certain amount of blood it could be a gauge & if you have to kill everything it could be a dead Red Eyed count. And maybe add a bit of feedback to enemies' deaths, as most of the time I noticed I killed some only when I was stepping on their corpses. Overall, I think it's a nice result for a game jam project and enjoyed playing it ! :)

Genamoeba by winniehell 2020-04-22T14:08:36Z

I quite like your game, the idea to make new species is quite fun and addictive. The dev is clean, no bugs or unexpected reactions, amoebas have a logical and fluid behaviour.

I think you could improve on the feedebacks and information you give to the player, something that makes it even more "I wanna have them all". Maybe add an ingame count of species discovered or a list of 'recipes' tried so far and what's the result. I found the idea enjoyable but most of the time I was just clicking on everything, waiting for a new species to pop up, as I did not know which one I had and/or could have.

I found the music soothing and the graphics have that innocent vibe to them that I think works well. Good job :)

Flerg's new obsession by Tomáš Selmeci 2020-04-21T16:04:20Z

I liked the story drawings that have a personnal touch to them and I like the dev work of your game. As it is not a usual compliment, I'll explain x) : everything that is shown works properly. It is not flawed and every player action is fluid and logical. I liked how you took the theme of 'keeping an entity alive by feeding/watering/loving it' and made it your own by choosing to make these tasks not related to a timer a gauge but to mini-games. It works well and make this type of game less stressful.

What I think can be improved on is the mood : the game has a sad mood at first, which works well, but then when Flerg finds their piglerg the mood should be happier, but the very melancolic music suggests otherwise. Or if it stays sad, maybe show why to the player (piglerg can die or depart if we don't take care of them ?) And I think the music also clashes with the apple/run part.

I understand very well that in a gamejam, everything is not perfect, I'm just pointing at what I think could be improved on a project that I find lovely and well made :)

You Live Like This? by LurkinMcClerkin 2020-04-21T15:23:49Z

Your game stressed me out, but it's the point x) I like the graphics a lot and the fact that the universe your game sits in is tangible (as in, I see a story behind the gameplay), with the voices and the overall mood.

I didn't enjoyed it to the max though because of what I think is not enough time to balance the gameplay. For example I think that computer fixing is too long ; the idea is great but only pressing to reboot then be able to go on with other tasks but without the monitor to help you for a short time would be incapacitating enough, preventing the player to move at all is too much I think.

Balancing a timed game is very timeconsuming and not the easiest of tasks, I'm just telling you what I think could be improved but I still think your game is great. Oh ! And I laughed when I received the bill x)

Pigeon Ascent by Delta Key 2020-04-23T14:07:24Z

Your game is really good ! Eveything from the graphics, sound design to the jokes work for a great mood ! The GUI art is beautiful and its design make it really easy to comprehend. The game is fun with no overdoing it.

The dev work too is impressive! I am a dev myself and I wouldn't dare to imagine implementing all those features in one game jam. I found one single bug. Only *one* ! When your pigeon dies and you restart with another one, the level of the opposing pigeons is not reset to start at 1.

Amazing job, really :star2:

Hatching Dragons by honey 2020-04-23T11:51:53Z

The tower defense to protect an egg for it to hatch is a good idea ! The enemies navigation system is well done !

I would have put more GUI informations such as a hatching loading bar for the egg or a life gauge for the character. The difficulty is high as aiming is quite hard, I agree with ion-programming when they say that cursor aiming would be easier to play with. I also got stuck in walls a few times, maybe a collider issue.

Overall I think your game is good work but maybe not playable enough to be fully enjoyable.

And don't forget : if you want your game to be rated you have to go and rate others' games so that yours becomes visible ^^

Potos by domkonecny 2020-04-22T13:41:31Z

I enjoyed the experience a lot ! The story/message behind it is really interesting and the mood in general is very well achieved through you graphics, gameplay and music. I read the subtext as a toxic relationship and moral abuse, maybe it was your point, maybe not but I was pleased to see this kind of important subject addressed so on point-ly. (On second play I read it as depression and self-destruction, still a crucial topic) The dev is good, fluid, no crashes or bugs and the color-change animation is brilliantly rendered.

I let the game turn in the background to see if you could kill the plant by waiting long enough. I was not disappointed <3

Well the only thing that I would add would be arrows to point out that there are other screens to move to. But as you can tell, I didn't need that to love your game.

Bringing Home the Bacon by RubixNoob13 2020-04-24T09:52:20Z

I found the dev good, everything works well. The graphic art shows that you put work and love into it, which is great !

To add a story to the game is a good idea but maybe it is too much story for the scope of your game. I think your game lacks balance and playtesting. 60 days is reaaaally long to go by and for example feeding the dragon is too slow to be able to do other things.

Overall I think it needs more time to be fully enjoyable but it still is a good work for a solo jam.

Berfism by MEDOcapra 2020-04-24T13:24:14Z

I like the idea and the start of the game with the "enemy menu" is well thought. The shooting mechanic is well developped, fluid and logical, good job !

If you could improve a bit I think it would be on the clarity of the occult chamber that I didn't quite understand and with some level design because I found that the easier way to go by with levels was running in circles while shooting at everything, which is fun but not very varied and leaves no place to strategic aiming.

The sound design is put in the right place and well thought with a different popping sound for each enemy, but I personally found the 'citizen' noise annoying.

Overall I think your game is a solid entry with some room for improvement.

Berfism by MEDOcapra 2020-04-24T20:01:26Z

@alex-iova Hello again ! About the cult room which I wrongly qualified as "occult chamber" (sorry), By improving its clarity I meant the meaning of the central zone in particular.

I think I understood at first glance that you have to pay with the soul count you have on the left. But what I find not clear is *what it is for*. If i spend it in "attack", do I get a one shot boost of my damages for the next level or an active "attack" like a temporary new ability, does it permanently increase my attack value (if so, where can I find this attack value). The same questions arise for the "health" item to buy : is it a special boost for next level, a healing for my remaining life, a max health modifier. I assumed that they both were definitive max health and damages modifiers, but as there are no gauges or values shown on the cult room nor new features or values on the 'recruitment' screen, I still didn't know what it was for.

Voilà, hope this feedback will help you !

Pet Sitter! by Sockyman 2020-04-23T09:32:41Z

The pet simulator is well done, every element is there. I like the shop that adds a bit of a clicker vibe to it, with the items that are here to "click for you" I might say. The GUI has every data well written and organized but could benefit from a little more graphic design to be less blunt.

Unfortunately my pet always commited suicide as I could not fathom how to entertain it with the ball-s. Your game has a tutorial ! I think it lacks a few information (hapiness block seems recurent within players) but it **exists** and is helpful enough to know what to do ; and for a gamejam project it is rare enough so that I fully appreciated yours.

El Burritón by JakNak72 2020-04-22T10:25:30Z

I really like your game ! I didn't get it at first but i quickly figured it out and it is really fun. The sounds are great (I love the "fridge being cooled" noise in particular, idk why...) The only negative point I could express is the frustration of the "you run out of buttons" end. I guessed it's when you have too much requests on screen but even then I could not fathom how to avoid it and it's really frustrating when you're deep into it and this ending pops out. Maybe an "overwhelmed gauge" with the same mecanic (too much button requests on screen make it fill up) would make it less raging as you could see the end coming.

Overall I reeeeally enjoyed your game, it's a lot of fun. I have to go and rate other games but I'd clearly want to do a few more runs x)

El Burritón by JakNak72 2020-04-22T16:39:44Z

@jaknak72 So I gave it another few tries knowing that I had to prioratize on the 2x2 & 1x3 commands to avoid the "no button left" ending. I achieved the score of 12 ! I am a bit proud :smirk:

While playing it a bit more, I had the time to form another suggestion in my head : when the pace builds up and the orders accumulate, the player wants to prioratize on the oldest orders so that they can get out of the way, knowing that most of the time there is only one step left to that "blimey order you have hanging there for 5 minutes". Following this idea, I think it would be great to color code the orders so that you can see in the blink of an eye what step is left on this particular order. That way, strategy would be increased and your game's lifetime too !

That's it for me, I still think your game is awesome ! Have a nice evening !

4 coins by Vertuga32 2020-04-23T21:57:07Z

I really enjoyed your game ! I used to play to a lot of puzzle poitn and click games when I was a child so this project made me nostalgic.

The drawings are beautiful and fit well with the theme and sounddesign. The level design for the combinations is pretty straight forward and easy to comprehend. I found them a bit too easy even and ended the game in less than 2 miniutes, that's the only improvement I would suggest. The dev looks nice, no bugs or crashes, no wrong collisions or unexpected behavior.

Now that I've played it I feel that this was only the demo version we had in cereals, and the final game will soon be in store. Quite a pleasing entry !

LD46 - Keep it alive by ZwodahS 2020-04-23T10:51:04Z

Nice game, I found the idea interesting and I like the mood you planted there but I think it needs sound design to really be immersive. I liked the ending twist but as I could go on with the tasks, I was waiting for a second ending. This has already been said but I felt it too so I wanted to share ^^

I think it needs some balancing on the difficulty. At first play when you have no idea what problem is caused by what, you die a lot (oxygen was mainly what I suffered from) and once you know how to fix each problem and how to prevent it, the 5 minutes wait is a stroll. The computer is a good idea and a useful tool but maybe it could make use of a clearer interface like signifying that there *is* a problem (red text or bleep noise) and maybe a dialogue box for the first time you encounter a problem("hmm. One of the oxygen tanks is probably leaking.")

These are just small things I think could be bettered but on the whole I found your game quite amusing and well put together. The graphics are nice too and the number of different actions to be performed is well balanced. The dev seems good too : fluid interactions with world, great fog of war, no bugs or crashes. Good work !

apples by Space Nomad 2020-04-24T13:38:17Z

I like the mood that you planted there with your gaphic art and sound design ! The apples goal is clear as the feeding bar is the same color as them, but it took me a while to figure out what were the bricks for. Maybe a clearer 'offensive' sprite would be cool.

I wanted to see a maximum of your level design but I find it really difficult to not die from hunger. After about 10 attempts I must confess that I gave up. But what I saw of your level design looks well thought. Maybe a slower descending gauge would make the game's lifetime longer.

Great game overall that needs a little balancing in my opinion.

Bosskeeper by YellowKamel 2020-04-22T09:02:52Z

Your title screen is just beeeaaauuutiful. The music on it works really well and the animation in the back is neat. The game in itself lacks a bit of mood I think, maybe a music would do the trick. I think your project could be improved with some bug fixes (it crashes sometimes or run loops on sound) and some more feedback (a life gauge would be perfect, maybe a clearer "damaged" state for the boss). I love the idea you had to make a quickstyled combat game only through cards and planning instead of mashing leftclick.

Fever by Analog Limb 2020-04-28T08:21:51Z

I love the light work you did there, it is gorgeous ! :sunny: I think the level design would better work with a little more to do, as it is really short. Colliders might need a litlle bit more work too, as I often got stuck into the wagon collider and could not move, had to restart the game.

Also, the mood is good, the assets you have work well when put together, but as you credited packs and bundles for them I am confused : did you make them ? If not, you shouldn't let people grade you on graphics to be fair to others that made their own graphics during the jam and as the assets are not your property.

Collect The Cores by TrogoQ 2020-04-24T14:10:48Z

For a first jam this is a bright result ! And as all the assets were yours, it seems you did a lot of work !

The level design is well thought and game design elements (like random order for core colours or impossibility to stack same color cores) are quite clever. I think you could improve on dev, like the collider issue that freezes the player's position or the jump that is not easy to handle at all. It feels like graphics and music were done with love which always gives a special touch to a game ; but they could use a little more work to be fully enjoyable.

The entry is really promising, good luck for your next project !

Cube Breakout by TailMaker 2020-04-24T14:48:34Z

It took me quite a while to figure out how to start the game. Fullscreen helped x) I'd say the mood is well settled with the music and the lights. The camera angles are strange (in a good way) and work well with the world of the game.

I found the plateformer too difficult because of a lot of collision bugs that made me restart for no apparent reason and the velocity of the cube that is really hard to manage when getting speed. Maybe some more time for more dev work would have helped.

Overall I quite liked your entry, and I think it could become really pleasing with some extrawork outside of the jam.

Dead Spirit by Snowirbis 2020-04-22T10:58:15Z

The world you build for your game is really nice ! Graphic art is beautiful and sound design fits well with it. The dev is good too : simple but nothing implemented that doesn't work or is glitchy.

I was surprised by the key mapping you chose ; usually jumping is on space and attacking on enter. It's not to say that you can't do what you please, obviously, but personally I found it confusing. Also I found the 'boss' to be easier to beat than the smaller enemies. It is bigger, that is to say easier to hit, and his range is smaller (compared to his size) so easier to dodge.

Overall I still think it's a well-made little game and a good entry for a gamejam, I'm just pointing at what I think could be improved for a future project ^^

-SPROUT- by ZEN 2020-04-23T15:24:41Z

Your menu is really complete and feels that a lot of effort have been put into it and the music is well made. The idea that your gun is as much of a weapon as a healing device is nice ! Your game is a great start but I think you need more time to work on it and make it fully enjoyable. The art of the robots, plant and gun are quite nice but they sit in a rather empty space that unfortunately serves them badly. Dev work is a good start too : no glitches or major crashes, only the collider box of the ennemies is maybe too small, it seems I can't hit them from the sides.

Overall I think it's a good project, full of potential but which needs a little more work to become a good game :)

Snowball's Day In by Anthony Pengelly 2020-04-23T15:55:12Z

I liked your game a lot. Everything is well rendered, the graphic art is well balanced between cute and wut, I appreciated that ^^

Sound design is well made and the music fits purrr-fectly (sorry). Game design is really smart with different kind of interactions for each organ, so that it is not a simple "click there for food, click there for air". Love the microbes that push you, the water that slows you down. Everything is a good idea and well made.

Dev also seems well executed : a lot of different little features to be implemented and no bugs or crashes. Good work !

Planet Wrapper by KevKraft 2020-04-24T10:14:39Z

I really like your game ! Graphics and sound design are realy beautiful and chill. Simple but very effective. A "keep it alive" that is not stressful or very rythmic is quite a breath of fresh air. The dev behing collisions and asteroid random spawn looks good, no unexpected behaviour. Love the parallax of the stars too, very soothing atmosphere.

As the gameplay is quite simple, to me, no directions is not a problem. I think the game could do with an ending though. And the insta kill is a bit too frustrating for such a chill game. I really enjoyed playing it !

"THE" ice cream game by nickw22 2020-04-21T18:11:38Z

I played it on my own but I wish I had another controler to test your game to its full potential. I enjoyed the changing of light and the labyrinth dev you did there. I quite like the fact that you went for a party game even if, as you said, it's not the most practical during lockdown ^^'

I think it could be improved with some gamefeel and feedback but otherwise it's already a game that I would enjoy playing for 1 or 2 runs with friends during game night.

Breeze by LieutenantMaster 2020-04-24T09:07:57Z

For a first time, indeed it is not bad !

As you said, I think the biggest issue you had was prod work : managing the tasks and determining which one to do first. The level design is huge and I noticed a lot of small features and great ideas (water instakill, wind tunnels, snow growth when on ground), but I think the gameplay of only on button (two when you're on snow but it's not very often) serves your level design badly. I would suggest smaller levels with clearer goal and a more fluffy gameplay (why not add one button/feature at the end of level 1 so that it breaks monotony). For dev work, it's really good, wind and direction jump are well done, colliders don't bug. I only had a problem with the player disappearing on level2 (maybe a z axis problem ?) Obviously sound design and more work on the graphics would have helped but in a compo it is quite hard to put everything.

Overall, nice work with potential that need more time management.

Goblin Guard by OreganoDev 2020-04-22T14:26:48Z

Your game is a good first attempt.

There are a lot of problems like the scale of your graphics, the wall that insta kills you, the GUI and the lack of sound effect. These are problems that can be fixed with more time, a bigger team to work with or experience.

I can't honestly say that I think your game is good but I can tell you that I think it's a good trial and that it shows potential. Keep at it ! :)

Keep Campfire On by FedeOlive 2020-04-23T11:29:44Z

I really like the graphic design of your game with the sketch theme. The dev looks good with no crashes, smooth movement and good random patterns. I think your project is a good dev and a good graph work, but it lacks a game designer and a sound designer.

The gamedesign is pretty straight forward and works well at the beginning but it begins to falter after a few minutes of play : I survived 8 minutes and then I quit as nothing new in the gameplay or the difficulty kept me entertained and pushed me to stay longer. I would say the mood could be improved too : The charac design is joyful, the background design is a bit scary and the music is 'chill relaxed campfire mood' but not rythmic enough to accompany the frantic movement of your character to survive.

Overall I enjoyed your game as a solid dev and graph project that I wished I'd have done during *my* first year

Rift Defender by RK-17 2020-04-22T11:50:35Z

Your game has a nice idea and is playable and even fun in some passages but I think you had an issue with the scope of it all(like I often do). I think you've seen too big for a jam and didn't prioratize elements to be implemented. Like the range of weapons to choose from is really nice and adds the fun to the game. But maybe you should have worked on a navmesh for enemies before making the different weapons, or a timed escape end to fit your scenario. Overall your poject is a good idea with not enough time to make it fully enjoyable, which often happens in gamejam, obviously ^^ I enjoyed the music and sound design that fit well with your game, though.

Wife Is Life by AncientPears 2020-04-24T08:07:07Z

The prototype shows some good ideas, the dev looks clean with no bugs, everything that is submitted functions properly. As you call it a prototype I guess you didn't have time to finish your project. Indeed In the level I don't know what to do or where to go. Hearts give life, the wife can kill monsters but takes damage but I can't figure out how to heal her. Maybe you didn't have time to finish the gamplay or maybe I just didn't understand.

The idea looks good and shows potential. The graphics are well done too, cute pixel art, although I am not a fan of the thumbnail

Daisy by MasterPose 2020-04-23T13:35:02Z

I found your game fun to play and to try all the possibilities and the objects that can be bought. The graphic design is nice, the sound design too (lacks a music though), the dev is visibly flawless and making a cinematical introduction to your game is a great touch !

The only improvement I would advise for your game would be more playtest and balance. Some items I quickly targeted as 'do not buy' like the umbrella that protects you from the sun but also keeps you from being watered so same-same as not having one. Also I was frustrated that I couldn't buy an item that I already had to repare/replace it. I died everytime because my spikes or bug net was destroyed during the night despite the fact that I knew it was going to collapse that night particularly, but couldn't avoid it even if I had the money to buy three of those the day before.

Otherwise it's a fun game ! I would have liked to know if the aircraft ends the game but after 5 games I still could not reach 2000 energy unfortunately. Nice work anyways !

Silkworm: Keeping the Game Alive by Roey_Shap 2020-04-22T15:18:51Z

I looooove your game ! It's incredible the quality AND quantity of content you put in there ! The story is really funny, the metajokes and gameplay are just brilliant. I love the sounds, the cute animations, the dialogues, the effort you put into the lo-fi joke. The only thing that I think you could improve is playtest of the minigames that I found a little bit too hard. But at the same time we were two, eyes riveted to my screen, groaning when our ball hit a wall and exclaiming when I finally hit the last brick. So it's a bit too difficult but still playable. It could use some music but with all the things you put in there I can see that you didn't have the time to do so.

And all this all by yourself ! Incredible work, really

TamagotchIT by spyranteros 2020-04-23T21:45:22Z

The idea is great ! It starts from a pun but ends up a short but whole game. Your dev is great for a first attempt ! You had only a few elements to implement but you did it very well. The pixel art is well executed and the GUI and gameplay is straightforward and easy to comprehend. You didn't see too big for your project and that's a great achievment for a first solo jam !

I would have added a music background like 8bit melody but for a first attempt at a whole project, this really is a bright result !
