The jump barely works

space-nomad 2020-04-21 11:45

@faer you can't jump when you're holding an object. maybe that's what you're referring to?

This game made me happy... maybe because I have early memories of playing Atari. I'm into the blocky style and I liked the crazy music. Gameplay is super hard, but that's ok. #scifi

Ahh pixel art!! The music reminded me of old NES games! The game is hard at first but once you get the hang of it, it is fun! Greato Jobu!

it's difficult to know what is what. some cool art though. nice one

Has a great mood I thought the concept was interesting resource management.

brain-in-a-bowl 2020-04-24 13:22

Very moody and atmospheric, well done!

kjscott 2020-04-24 13:31

It would be good that if you completed the game for it to revert back to the start after pressing any key, that way you could play again.

Nice little game. Loved the fact that you couldn't jump when holding something. Made it all the way through and had fun playing it! screen.png

The pixel art is simple but still very well done! I loved the colors. The game is quite difficult to play! Perhaps if you make the the hunger bar go down slower/make it possible to jump while holding an item would make it more user friendly. Nice work!!

I like the mood that you planted there with your gaphic art and sound design ! The apples goal is clear as the feeding bar is the same color as them, but it took me a while to figure out what were the bricks for. Maybe a clearer 'offensive' sprite would be cool.

I wanted to see a maximum of your level design but I find it really difficult to not die from hunger. After about 10 attempts I must confess that I gave up. But what I saw of your level design looks well thought. Maybe a slower descending gauge would make the game's lifetime longer.

Great game overall that needs a little balancing in my opinion.

Nice game. I got really frustrated with it at first, but then I realized you don't have to go back to the creature to feed it.

It would have been nice if the "can't jump while holding rock/apple" was explained, either in the game or in this post- I figured it out eventually.

Neat idea though!

Pretty minimalist execution but I liked it in it's simplicity. It was like an amiga speedrun. I think you could add some sound effects to spice things up!

alexandroskap 2020-04-27 18:13

Its a good idea. Made me think when to take the item and when to use it. Maybe more audio visual feedback for when you carry an item would make the system feel better. Had a fun time playing this.

First of all, nice job! I also got into a trap of "I can get a playable prototype in a first day", and ended up with more than twice that time, haha. But you've managed to complete the game, that's really great.

Mechanics wise, I struggled a bit with a lack of visual feedback between holding rock / holding apple states, but the game was simple enough to figure everything out. The level design was quite clever, you've nailed some "aha" moments and tension for reaching that apple in the last possible second in several areas was good. And I liked the clarity of sprite design - while it was simple, I'd never mistake enemy for friend, and vice versa. I felt like apples should be also thrown like rocks, but for some reason you've made a shortcut for that.

As for music, well.. it's irritating. Some people would say that it's better to go without any music than including something written badly, but I'll disagree. Making complete game includes audio, so it's a good thing you've allocated time to do that. As for the quality - there's always room for improvement. I'd recommend some pre-harmonized samplers and loopers like https://www.incredibox.com/ to get something simple and fast.

Nice concept and level design! Sometimes I felt that I was going out of my way for an apple when really I needed a rock and the apple just happened to be in the way, and caused me to panic a bit, not an issue just I'm not very good at the game lol! Overall, this is a really good jam game!

I had a lot of fun. It felt strange that my little friend didn't walk backwards. Overall a fun experience. Good job!

Nice game ! As said, it would be a bit easier if you could jump while holding an object or if the hunger bar was slowed. I was quite in a hurry and my little friend went in front of me in a small area, I did not have time to go back and it was blocking me from going forward... And sometimes, I don't quite understand why I can't jump, even when I don't seem to be carrying an item.

Cool game. Most of it is pretty well polished, and the simple graphics were nice. The controls were smooth, and I like that objects weigh you down. As others have said, the hunger bar may be a bit too fast, but overall this game was really fun. Nice work!

zubspace 2020-05-05 19:50

Nice little game you got there! Took me a while to understand the eating and throwing mechanic, but I was to dumb and skipped the instructions... Anyway, from then on everything went smooth and great. You need to be fast, but it's a nice challenge. Would have loved to play more levels, because I liked the blocky pixel art and the crazy music. I'd also like to learn more about the player and its little pet. Nice one!
