Looking forward to a fun project!

neonzone 2020-04-14 17:17

Yeah - looking forward to this project! :)

I this is a great concept. It definitely has potential to be a fun and challenging game. One thing you may want to consider is creating an easier level to start, to ease the player into the mechanics. I found it pretty jarring to have to figure out how to play the game on the spot. I definitely found some fun and hectic parts in trying to prepare the order, so I think there's great potential in this idea.

bozont 2020-04-21 10:43

Really, really great concept. I think with a tutorial, and some polish, this could be a really, really good game, just add a tutorial to ease the player into the mechanics

jasonsumm1 2020-04-21 10:53

nice! kinda Overcooked idea. good job, I liked it :)

hegemege 2020-04-21 16:45

I absolutely loved this, brought me a lot of joy :)

The game didn't need any explaining, great graphics and audio. Perhaps if each order had some sort of progress bar to indicate how close you are to finishing it, would help at the start. Also I didn't really understand why I had to keep the two fridges cool all the time, but all the other tasks were fun to do and they were varied. I got to 9 orders and then I just wanted to see what happens if you lose.

Awesome, thanks for making this

maryush28 2020-04-21 17:51

A well made game. There are problems when you try to press the buttons sending signals from the same line, e.g. iirc, you can't press 3 while holding S, A and W. Besides this, the graphics are very good comparing to other Ludum Dare submits, the music is also relaxing.

P.S. And there is no exit button! Doing exit code takes less than 1 minute!

Cheers!

wfmg 2020-04-21 18:26

Very fun game! I enjoyed holding down so many buttons. I truly felt my skills were put to the test. This was a very creative idea and you executed it well.

jaknak72 2020-04-21 18:44

@maryush28 Thanks! I've heard that from some people now but I think it depends on the keyboard you are using. Not every keyboard supports all button presses at once as you normaly don't need that. And we kinda forgot about the exit code in the end. Sorry for that!

jaknak72 2020-04-21 18:49

@hegemege Great idea with the progrss bars! We wanted to do something like having each key is the same color as the order but sadly ran out of time. Maybe we will implement this in the future. 9 is a pretty good score for the first round!

fatpenguin 2020-04-21 21:00

Yay I love me some overcooked :D Enjoyed the isometric artstyle, gave me some serious Sims vibes (y) :)

aevek 2020-04-22 05:51

I love me some good keyboard twister, even better because its about making burritos. Great work.

grizzliusmaximus 2020-04-22 08:51

The sounds in this game are really amazing I have to say. Feels like ASMR!!! The game is something I haven't seen in any gamejam entries. You guys really did a good job on this one!!!

gnocchi 2020-04-22 10:25

I really like your game ! I didn't get it at first but i quickly figured it out and it is really fun. The sounds are great (I love the "fridge being cooled" noise in particular, idk why...) The only negative point I could express is the frustration of the "you run out of buttons" end. I guessed it's when you have too much requests on screen but even then I could not fathom how to avoid it and it's really frustrating when you're deep into it and this ending pops out. Maybe an "overwhelmed gauge" with the same mecanic (too much button requests on screen make it fill up) would make it less raging as you could see the end coming.

Overall I reeeeally enjoyed your game, it's a lot of fun. I have to go and rate other games but I'd clearly want to do a few more runs x)

jaknak72 2020-04-22 12:18

Hey @gnocchi thanks for the extensive feedback! The "ran out of buttons" thing happens when a new 2x2 or 1x3 pattern is created but there is no such pattern left. The best way to avoid it is by finishing these first so that they don't take away to many buttons and a new pattern can be created any time. Would be awesome if you would give it another shot with that in mind and tell us the score you got!

leafthief 2020-04-22 14:51

Once I figured out what each individual element wanted me to do it was quite fun to aim for as high a score as possible. I served the amazing number of **2** (in words "two") burritos! Everything was well made, I just felt that the UI / font choice could've gotten more love as it didn't feel on par with the rest of the game. Good stuff!

gnocchi 2020-04-22 16:39

@jaknak72 So I gave it another few tries knowing that I had to prioratize on the 2x2 & 1x3 commands to avoid the "no button left" ending. I achieved the score of 12 ! I am a bit proud :smirk:

While playing it a bit more, I had the time to form another suggestion in my head : when the pace builds up and the orders accumulate, the player wants to prioratize on the oldest orders so that they can get out of the way, knowing that most of the time there is only one step left to that "blimey order you have hanging there for 5 minutes". Following this idea, I think it would be great to color code the orders so that you can see in the blink of an eye what step is left on this particular order. That way, strategy would be increased and your game's lifetime too !

That's it for me, I still think your game is awesome ! Have a nice evening !

kappa-b 2020-04-22 16:44

I discovered the game in Instafluff's stream. I had to play it. Loved it well done!! overcooked inspired game loop, great idea bud!

gamescodedogs 2020-04-22 17:48

Thanks for the game :) My wife is declining to play Overkooded because it's too stressful. Love the art style and less stress. Wish you the best of luck!

rhoka 2020-04-23 01:52

This was awesome and I could see this being some sort of competitive esport. Sometimes you get lucky and have easy to reach keys for the fridges, but sometimes not and it just makes it utter chaos. My highscore was 12. Great work!

krassenstein 2020-04-23 16:28

Man, this game was so cool! I really loved the extreme micromanaging that existed in this. I can now say that my hands have now bent in ways that I've never seen them bend before!

Excellent job!

Really like the multitasking with keyboard concept. You did a great job with the graphics, sfx and music really set a good mood. Great job!

drums 2020-04-23 22:01

This looks amazing. I like the detail and feedback to for the player and it feels smooth. Thank you for making this :)

jacksendary 2020-04-23 22:06

Was super fun but very stress full, think with a lot of luck you probably could get som good key combos tho making it easier :D

mags 2020-04-23 22:43

I love cooking games sooooo much! This was spot on, very nice mechanics to the genre of the game. I wish there was more polishing and a possibility for a longer gameplay (so I can enjoy it some more). Good job, very good! :)

cheesepencil 2020-04-23 23:12

I guess my keyboard isn't good enough, it would only recognize three keys pressed at the same time, I wonder if any of the activity keys were hyper keys (like shift, control, or alt) that I would have had an easier time. In the end, I was able to complete two whole orders! I thought it was fun and loved the mood.

backurio 2020-04-24 12:09

Really cool game idea. I have played a similar game with this idea once in a game jam and I really liked it. The theme is well transported with keeping your kitchen/restaurant alive. However, there are some things that I would have made differently.

* First of all, in my few plays I never had to use the right fridge. So for me it makes not sense to have a button to cool it down. Maybe I was not progressing far enough to have used it tho. * I like the idea to play twister with your fingers, but it was very annoying that the buttons switched for each game. I would go for a fixed button layout, that way the player could really get better in the game, because they can memories the recipes and perform the required button requests out of muscle memory. * As I got more and more recipes, I was not really able to recognize which step was used for which meal. So I would recommend to use some sort of color coding or similar, so that I know exactly waht to do to finish one meal and avoid the incoming list of meals to get full. * I don't like the lose condition of running out of buttons at all. I know that there are only limited buttons on the keyboard but by following my second point you could resolve this issue. Maybe it would also make sense to match the position of the buttons to the position on the kitchen, to also give the player an easier way to make the eye to hand coordination of finding the buttons. Or the other solution to the problem, if you really want to keep the random buttons would be to delay the button instruction until the needed buttons are available again. Just don't let the player fail because of this. * Last but not least, the kitchen looks really nice, but it feels very static. It would be cool if there would be some movement on the screen to keep the player entertained.

Please don't get my list of things to improve wrong. I really liked your game and you could improve on it.

Btw. I got your game recommended by your former student colleague Veit, who is now one of my colleagues in the Master's program ;)

aurel300 2020-04-24 21:41

We streamed your game with Danae: [link to Twitch VOD](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/599171054?t=01h10m17s) (approximate timestamp)

This was a lot of fun, I think it is one of my favourites this LD. As mentioned during the stream, not having an N-key rollover keyboard introduces some unnecessary difficulty – which is really unfortunate, since the held keys added variety.

frozen-spirit 2020-04-25 04:50

Cool game. I loved trying to stretch all my fingers across the keyboard to try multitask and the music was quite enjoyable. I would like some more indication to when I need to focus on order and the ability to know what orders I'm doing to better prepare especially with seeing how far along they are. Over all a really cool entry, good job. :D

jaknak72 2020-04-26 09:26

@krassenstein I sadly missed the stream but watched it afterwards. It was super fun and I'm glad you enjoyed playing our game! Hope your fingers are ok and all bent back to a normal position again?

@aurel300 really enjoyed your stream as well! Great to hear that it's one of your favorite games!

@backurio @frozen-spirit the colorcoding of buttons and orders just got even higher on our todo list. Thanks for the feedback!

@backurio also thanks a lot for the other extensive feedback! Going to discuss it all with my teammates. The second fridge never has stuff in it. It's just there to annoy you :P Good to hear that you liked the game and greetings to Veit!
