LD44 — Your life is currency

Signal by HitchH1k3r 2019-05-09T04:20:30Z

This game is a solid, all-around entry. I got a little tired playing, but it's not your fault, it's just been a long day. But with that aside, here's my op.

Solid game all around, music, grafx, mood, love how you implemented the theme into the core mechanic and loop. Great Cave Story/Metroidvania atmosphere as someone mentioned above. I'm impressed by the amount of content you managed to squeeze into the game, so much to explore and so much shopping to do. This is one of those few LD games that you can actually spend a good, long while playing. I'll certainly be revisiting. The 'W' to jump and interact was a little frustrating at times, but it doesn't take away from the awesomeness that is this game. 4.5 overall! Great work!

Hand of Death by josefnpat 2019-05-02T04:28:51Z

Very interesting game and some really great design choices here. The music was pretty good, and it was cool to have some voice effects in too, even if they were simple. The design choices certainly added some life and character into the game. I'm not sure that the theme was portrayed too accurately, but there's a solid story-based game here. 4.0 overall!

RAD MAC by jsmars 2019-05-09T03:17:19Z

At first I struggled to realize what was going on. The sprites were moving across the screen, like flying while the car's handling was frustratingly difficult to control. Eventually the sprites stopped flying around when I was driving, not sure if that was a bug or something. I also realized the car's handling gets better with upgrades. I also finally understood that the green line was like a way point to point towards the blood packs to keep your engine running. So, it took me a while to get a hang of things, and I'm not sure what was up early on with the background objects, like cactus', bystanders and other things literally floating around rather than being stationary and me moving.

Once I got the hang of it, the game got fun, it was cool to do the upgrades and get better at driving the vehicle. Great graphics, interesting music, and a great way of handling the theme. 4.0 overall!

Powerup Puncher by cogcomp 2019-05-04T05:26:15Z

Powerup Puncher is probably the most hilarious jam game I've played out of the 15-20 games I've gotten to so far. First the music is just perfect. Before you know it, you're kicking and punching to the tune of the groove and trying to beat up the most eclectic and hilarious lineup I've seen in a video game. Not to mention, when you punch or kick while crouching, it looks like your fighter is both twerking and dancing to the music. This is S-Level comedy class, folks.

Who cares if the controls aren't perfect or that the visuals are kitschy. The theme has been innovatively used here, especially for a fighting game done in 48hours. 4.0 overall score, except I had to give it a 5 for humor. Excellent work @cogcomp

Zugzwang by riv-roy 2019-05-03T22:38:46Z

A very neat, chess-like game where you control pieces with their own movement style and can use the loss of one to your benefit through points. Each point can be used for a series of abilities that can aid you by affecting the battlefield or dealing damage.

This was a neat rendition of the theme, seems pretty polished and is fun if you have two players to play with. An AI would have been neat for solo players, but only so much you can do in a jam. I thought the UI being a part of the game world was a neat decision. The music is rather peaceful and gives space for some deep strategic thinking. The gameplay between pieces has some effects which could benefit from being more punctuated, the healing piece however seems very well done. A solid entry into the jam. 4.0 overall score!

Bloodslinger by ryusui 2019-05-03T04:42:06Z

Cool to see another game use a card mechanic as it's main feature. Game is interesting to play and it's always neat when the player has to guess what cards will be best to play, and if none then redraw. I like the chips component as your life. Wished there was some music in the background as that would really add to the game's mood, but with what you have, you've got a nice, playable game here. Would be cool to see where this game can go in future iterations! 4.0 overall!

HeistLyfe by benmcnelly 2019-05-02T04:58:14Z

Yoinked about 130 monies! Love the little yoink audio! Game has some good humor with the sound and the comments on the phone UI. Good design decision to use the phone as part of the interface to show what the player is looking at in game. That certainly added to the game's personality. This was a cool little heist game and I thought was pretty innovative. I'd rate it between 3.5 to 4.0 overall.

HoldTheButton by Zitao YE 2019-05-02T14:53:31Z

This is an excellent meta rendition of the jam's theme portrayed in a hand-drawn art style that is certain to set it apart. From the decision to go B&W and the off-kilter mood and theme, this is a game worth exploring, even in its rough state. I think audio could have added to the experience, but then again, there's a silent film vibe going on where it works without it. I think then that one way of working around the lack of sound would be to add some more visual fx to aid the player in taking actions, in other words, so that action and reaction are very "juicy" and discernable. 3.5 overall!

Ludum Meta by Exevalon 2019-04-30T20:51:51Z

Will certainly add a description/instructions on playing! Thanks for trying the game out! @pyrian that might be a bug which lead to the crash, sorry to hear that happened. You should have up to 48 hours to allocate between Game and Life. The reason the progress bar doesn't appear as full is because its max limit is higher than 100, I had to do that to work around a bug I didn't have time to fix. Technically, the progress bar is reaching 100% when you complete it, even if it doesn't appear as fully complete.

Ludum Meta by Exevalon 2019-05-02T05:18:37Z

@josefnpat thanks for playing! The idea with assigning and unassigning was to allow the player to pivot in their time allotment to account for the status updates which can affect you while also trying to stop health from further decreasing. So in a way trying to balance gamedev and life. Conceptually, it tries to make a mechanic Henry David Thoreaus' quote, "the price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it." I forgot to add that quote, so that'll be in a future iteration.

Ludum Meta by Exevalon 2019-05-02T14:33:19Z

@thenerdster Glad you enjoyed it!

@liauj You can play a little less frenetically and still pull off a win. But yeah, the game certainly could use some finetuning! Thanks for playing!

Ludum Meta by Exevalon 2019-05-03T17:11:43Z

@lomna awesome! Thanks for playing!

Ludum Meta by Exevalon 2019-05-06T18:28:40Z

@josh-powlison Thanks for playing! Regarding the allocation and deallocation, the ideas was to give the player flexibility to choose how to allocate time and adjust if the status updates start getting negative. There's a feature that I didn't get to put in though that would have made it even more necessary. As it stands, getting the right balance alone helps to win. The progress bar bug is known, regarding the buttons greying out, it could be depending on amount of time you have left, but i'll have to look into it.

@oddsocks Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!

@daria-toni Thanks for playing! I wish I was able to put in more content, but I'll have to do that in a future update! But I was definitely trying to go for something finished within the time limit. Thanks again!

Ludum Meta by Exevalon 2019-05-09T14:59:53Z

@pengda Thanks for playing! I see you made a game, congrats!

Ludum Meta by Exevalon 2019-05-22T15:15:38Z

@mrspeaker Possibly in the future! I built it in Windows Forms, so I'll have to check if I can do a web build. Thanks for playing!

@papaver Thank you! Basically it's more about balancing life and game dev, the ratio is 2:1 pretty much with Life to Game. The time bar starts at about halfway because it reflects that you have 48 hours, there is no way currently for the timer to grow.

There must be a bug I didn't catch with regards to the assigning and unassigning hour buttons. I'll have to look into that. Thank you for playing!

SERVUS BONUS by gurkenlabs 2019-05-15T02:46:49Z

Difficult gameplay, even when jumping and moving around, but it doesn't detract from the game too much. There's a nice polish to this game, the visuals are nice as well, and the theme is pretty interestingly used in this game. 3.5 overall!

Idle Idol by Daniel Moreno 2019-05-03T05:14:30Z

Wow, where do I start? This game is all around polished and did something VERY cool with the theme. A super great twist with the theme, excellent punchiness and pacing, great audio, super polished visuals. Was this a one-man project? That kinda makes it all the more amazing! Thoroughly impressed by this. 5.0 overall!

Electric Sheep by player2point0 2019-04-30T20:31:01Z

Thought this was an interesting experiment, all the more so with the AI having done the logic. It got frustrating at times trying to herd the sheep, especially when at times they move quicker than you can herd them. They also, for some reason, after a certain amount of time start moving towards the top right of the screen and don't stop.

You want to move them towards water or grass, but because they keep moving towards the top right, they slip out above your or under you when trying to herd them.

It's a challenging game but mostly because of the controls and the bug. If the bug wasn't there, I think herding them would be much more enjoyable and interesting. Herd mechanic could be finetuned a bit. Overall, I think there's a gem here waiting to be polished! 2.5 overall score.

Lifetime by AMastryukov 2019-05-02T04:42:12Z

This game has a nice pace to it and a simple but engaging core loop: break crates, get a weapon, and take out some androids. Wash, rinse, repeat. The music track is rather simple but fits well with the game. Theme portrayal is standard issue, but the game's challenge keeps you coming back for more. 3.5 Overall score!

Pimp My Reaper by BytingGames 2019-04-30T20:15:52Z

This was a fun little game! Enjoyed the visuals and the simple but challenging gameplay. There's a good degree of polish here that I found impressive! Goes to show what you can do with a large team. You also worked with the theme in an elegant way, so kudos for that! I wanted some more bang out of the sound effects though. One area I think would be interesting to iterate upon in the future would be to chain together dashes and combo enemies that you kill. Love the humor too! 4.0 Overall score here!

Your life is currency by pengda 2019-05-09T03:43:45Z

Interesting concept in using the coins to get around. I'm not sure how it ties into theme as the currency isn't necessarily your life, although the currency is necessary to get through each level. I thought overall it was a cool little experiment with a peaceful music track in the background. Well done! 3.0 overall!

I'll mention that in the browser the screen is way to big and I have to click around to see where to go. Having an option for the player to go fullscreen or not would be useful.

Cloudwalker by JLV 2019-05-03T22:55:19Z

Big plus for being able to work on VR, though I used a desktop to play. This was a curious and quite original take on the theme. Music isn't super exciting, but I think that works very well for the mood and the "end reveal", so it's kind of foreshadowing I guess. Simple gameplay, can be a bit hard to "observe" the aircraft, so the challenge lies in catching and holding it in your sight long enough. Very neat experiment that seems to have lots of potential. 4.0 overall!

Mr. Bees Wild Adventure: Buzz Off by WiredOverload 2019-05-03T04:08:34Z

Challenging sidescroller here with a catchy tune in the background. Thought it was cool the bees had banded together to make a guy in a suit! Firing too many bees or getting wasped too many times leads to death and then another game restart. Cool, interesting game with an interesting mechanic. 3.5 Overall!

BatteryWars by Sherlock527 2019-05-03T04:28:15Z

Great game, congrats on finishing your first LD! Thought this game had a nice gameplay loop, the wave based system really works with this type of game. The gameplay was pretty standard issue for the theme, but it's definitely challenging and can hook the player in who wants to find out how long they can survive when surrounded by a lot of enemies. The audio track goes well with the game and adds to the mood. 3.5 overall!

bETween us by Zariel 2019-05-15T00:32:22Z

A nice little atmospheric game with a creepy factor, you never know who or what is watching you as you fumble around in the dark. I was looking to interact with other things around the map, but was disappointed to see that I couldn't. I'm not sure how the theme is present in the game either. With that being said, this was a neat little experience that seems to hold promise as it gets iterated upon. 3.5 overall!

Draculus by Salamander 2019-04-30T19:50:19Z

So congrats on making the game for the compo! It's always a tight deadline, so what you did with it was pretty good. I enjoyed the challenge and actually spent a while in the last stage before I ran out of bullets and my system was slowing down because of the amount of enemies spawning.

Wished the sounds that were there were punchier and there was some music for the background. I also found myself wanting a knife attack or something for when I ran out of bullets, but I see that running out of bullets is also part of the life theme, so it makes sense.

I gave an overall 3.0 as the idea of using your Health to buy items is rather standard, but I thought it was an intriguing idea to have the bullets also count as a win/lose condition.

Rich Robots by OnePolygon 2019-05-04T05:02:32Z

"Like ants coming out of their ant hill, the robots flooded the country side..."

This was seriously fun and hilarious. Theme is very standard life-as-currency mechanic, but this game is all about letting the robots mass together and blow the hell out of them with the mega grenade. I was cracking up laughing the whole time. Next thing I know, I've lost track of time, I'm over 60k in coins and I'm 15 waves deep. I don't know how long I spent playing, 30 or 40min straight, but that was good, mindless fun. 3.5 overall score, but I gave it a 5.0 on fun!

On that last wave I played, 1024 robots spawned and I let them mass together. Then I spammed a bunch of mega grenades and went down from 60k in life/coins to 6000. My computer slowed down for a few seconds as I carpet bombed those robots back to the trash heap LOL!

Currency Lane by Cody Nguyen 2019-05-02T05:11:07Z

Great tagline! "You are coin. Get more coin. Coin is love, coin is life. Upgrade to coin better" For those who are completionists, there's something here for you. You'll be playing for quite a long while before you get any of the shop upgrades! I think there's a whimsy and a simplicity in how the theme was incorporated into this game, it's very pure. You are literally currency, and your whole life revolves around currency. Some of the currency could definitely be worth more so shop purchases can actually be made in our human lifetime. Cool game, simple concept, challenging. 3.5 overall score!

Current_CE by zoneoutapps 2019-05-03T05:28:10Z

Looks like the current train came through here because this game is *electric*! A cool little platformer using a neat mechanic with batteries and plasma. Definitely a different game than the usual stuff out there! I also think the batteries are cute and remind me of little minions! Coolness factor, neat audio, creative, nets it a 4.0 overall score!

Current_CE by zoneoutapps 2019-05-03T17:13:32Z

@zoneoutapps I didn't realize we could still tinker with our games even during the voting phase? If that's legit, there's a few bugs I should probably get to fixing on my game!

Get Me My Drones! by floxy 2019-05-09T03:30:20Z

Interesting concept, I think you did something pretty creative with the theme, it was quite innovative. I played both the LD version and the post LD version. I think the drones could have been more noticeable when fired as they get lost and it's hard to see where you fired. Some audio cues would be nice when firing and connecting with a shot. In any case, this was a neat game with potential and the post-LD version certainly fixes a few things. 3.5 overall!
