LD4 — Infection

Insanity by allefant

Combat is too simple to be enjoyable, and I got bored and gave up before I found Dr. Dekl. Gravity is a little strange (jump arcs are weird, non-parabola shapes), and actually, I'm not sure why I can jump. There don't seem to be any pits or spikes to jumping over. Anyway. This looks like it could eventually become fun.

Commies! by randomnine

Great stuff! I love all the nice little touches - the 'army font', the harmonizing parts in the theme song, the Sims-esque thought-items over people's heads. Gameplay is kind of simple, but pretty darn fun as-is.

War on Infection by tareco

Hmm...I was hoping for something like Advance Wars 2 with a virus theme :) This is a good start, and I think the 'doctor' support unit is a nice idea.

Infected! by Krzysiek-K

Crosshairs might be nice; I couldn't tell exactly where I was shooting.

The Destruction of the Viruses by Jolle

The level looks nice, very smooth on rotate. Sometimes it takes a long, long, long, long time to finish shooting all the viruses, though.

Virgil by LordCovenant

(That's a lot of lines of code) Love the particles. Nice tutorial level at the first.

Infection Fighter by adriczero

I like the idea of gameplay in a maze of interlinked one-way passages. With some beefed-up gameplay (maybe something to run away from) this could become pretty fun. The bumpy scrolling is painful.

OSWar by summaky

The 6x6 dots-and-boxes game is unsolved as far as I know, but here are some analyses of smaller boards: http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~dwilson/boxes/games/

The isometric graphics can make it somewhat hard to see the wires; I'd like a flat 2D display better.

Also, Tux the Penguin freaks me out. If I were choosing a mascot, I wouldn't pick an animal that's fat, bald, and has sex at most once a year...

Jelly by Cenozoic

Very good. This is one of the entries I'm curious to see more of.

I really like the graphics. The rotating grid looks nice and smooth. And the ship is cute (reminds me of the Shofixti from Starcon 2). It can be a little hard to tell which end of the ship is up (the 'head' is a similar color to the vapor-trail).

I like the gameplay. There are all sorts of tweaks that could flesh it out (different map-shapes, or a level where shots temporarily-immunize instead of killing, or...) My main complaint is that it's HARD. Changing direction is a little slow (almost three seconds to go from free-fall to movement upwards), which makes it very hard to catch up with the virus.

Attack of the Blondes by slutty_eddie

Grr...I want the last 60 seconds of my life back.

Gooploid by Gnatinator

Ah a falling-stuff game :) Needs a little more complexity to stay interesting, but it looks pretty good, and "evil moon goop" is a phrase you don't see eveery day. The man in the moon is cute.

infekchion by illume

At first it seemed to simple to be fun, but...it's enjoyable. Gameplay could still use something more (evil cubes to avoid? time limit? something...)

Soundtrack is pretty good, I'd like to hear more of it. The bassline has some clipping issues.

After a while, it all becomes sort of...hypnotising... Must...obey...red...cube...

infeXion by bluescreen

Amazing. This is miles ahead of the other entries.

The graphics are professional-quality, the explosions and particles are gorgeous. The translucent wobbly 'asteroids' look great, and the darkened underground is nice and spooky. The sound effects are wonderful. The music is very simple, but the mood is perfect.

The gameplay is good - not as awesome as the graphics, but genuinely fun. Gravity is pretty heavy, which makes the game rather tough (I can't seem to pass area 3). I think having more lives (or the ability to continue from the start of an area) would be nice.

Zombiepox by peitz

The zombies sometimes stop chasing people and just sort of lounge around. It's a cute game, though,

Mucus Infection by Thenend

Pretty simple, but still fun. The way all the enemies turn toward you is pretty neat.

And I like the move-with-keyboard shoot-with-mouse control scheme...it's the mirror image of my entry :)

Pathogen Warrior by tonic

Nice background music. It might be nice if left- and right-clicking cycled the "bonds" in different directions. And I had some trouble telling the different shades of blue and green apart. The world map with scary growing circle is a great touch.

Zombie Epidemic by Ufo Z

This is a great entry. The green zombie footprints are great (and useful), and the sprays of glowy zombie ooze are very satsisfying. I like the unusual perspective; buildings look good without obscuring the action. Sound is good (needs a good disembowel-y sound for killing the zomies though).

The car wasn't as fun as I thought it would be - I kept getting stuck. It would be nice if the streets were a bit wider on the car level, or if (unrealistic physics, but hey, zombie game) the car could turn in place.

Plague! by wobbler

I like this idea. I think it could even work well as a board game if the numbers were managable. I'm not really clear, at this point, what the strategy is (Why do some carriers die, and not others? Do I start fires to block movement of the other player's carriers?). But anyway, I'd be interested to see what this turns into.

T-Cell by Jacius

A neat gameplay idea, though at this point shooting the green markers is not really as fun as just blowing things up. Sometimes the white blood cells just swoop around and around and don't actually clean up the bad guys. (Also - the bad guys can just swim away from the green blob, which seems somewhat unfair; it would be nice if the protein markers were sticky, so that shooting a bacteria multiple times held it in place) Graphics are ok, but very static (even a simple rotating or pulsating effect would make things look nice)

none yet by Skalle

Looks nice so far. I'm curious what it would have (or will) become.

Antigen by Mark Fassett

Looks very nice.

The secondary shot is very hard to use, since it moves slower *and* has to hit a moving target. It might be interesting to beef up the secondary shot, but require multiple shots (possibly from multiple angles) to kill an infected cell; that way chasing the bacteria is important and not just a distraction. Or maybe have infected cell shoot out bullets you have to strafe around. Anyway, the game is already pretty amusing as-is.

Peanut Butter: The Simulator by Zaphos

The line "Remember to be gentle with your bread" made me laugh out loud.

infection-terror by Chronocore

Wow, it's fast! Too fast to play on my machine...but, the idea looks good. Nice title screen and instructions (although the instruction screen should probably mention arrow keys and space bar).

Gameplay is a little simple - having something else to watch out for (falling bombs, an enemy plane) might be nice. I like the blue color oozing up the buildings.

Snag by shredwheat

Wow - this is amazingly polished. Animated menus, even. Reminds me of playing dots-and-boxes.

Infectrons (FINISHED) by LoneCoyote

Sprites would look better with a black colorkey (so their 'empty' corners weren't drawn over the top of other sprites)

Antibody by TwinnedArak

This is pretty good so far - the spinning, bouncing bacteria look neat. I wish the antibodies started the other way around (prongs up instead of down).

My first idea for the competition was a little bit like this. Originally, I was going to make a puzzle game where there are some good strings and some virus strings, and you use tiles to build a regular expression that kills the viruses. But I hate regular expressions, so I dropped that idea.

Most Extreme Infection by mcarroll

Moves *much* too slowly on my machine (several seconds to turn 90 degrees left).

Raids (not finished) by drZool

The hero graphics look good as isolated images...but walking without animation looks kind of cheesy (and sometimes his feet disappear). The flash for a gunblast is a nice touch. The targeting crosshairs sometimes wander around, though.

Zombie Death (FINISHED) by wisebede

Ooh...it's like Robotron with zombies. Death sound is great, nice blood effects. Shooting sound is maybe a little too quiet.

Saving the civilians can be frustrating; it would be nice if I could get them to follow me or something. And I'd like it if zombies looked even more different from civilians.

The Newcastle Chicken Slaughter by Giddy

Minimap is very nice.

Mind Controlling Killer Virus! by survivor

Ooo, a sneaking game with puzzles. I like it. It took me a couple of games to figure it out, but I got the happy end eventually :) I really like the fact that you know people's detection-area.

BioWulf by DrTiger

My biggest complaint is that the projectiles aren't visible (or audible) on my machine, so at first I wasn't sure why some sheep were starting to turn red.

Killing sheep is always a fun idea, but I think the gameplay needs some more work (maybe a puzzle game, where you have to study sheep motion, or an arcade game, where you have to click fast enough?) Waiting for sheep to wander randomly into a good configuration is not very fun.

Infection Wars by tsmaster

Interesting setting. I wish I had more control over my protoplasmoids (maybe not Starcraft-like RTS control, but at least Majesty levels of indirect control)

Shrooms! by zoggles

I like it. It looks good - great grass backround, nice logo, and cute gophers. The gameplay is novel and enjoyable. Having the thought-bubble show where the gopher is heading is a great cue.

Infectoban by flgr

Very nice game idea - it's different enough from Sokoban to allow some interesting new puzzles.

I think it would be nice to have an undo feature - or a quicksave feature. It's painful to get back to where you started if you push one block too far.

Sometimes it looks a little jumpy when a block "snaps" to a new grid location. It might look cleaner to always walk the player one grid square at a time (so, if you press right, the character marches one full square to the right before stopping).

Diaspora by alia

I think a combat version of Conway's game of Life is a really neat idea. It looks nice - things run quickly, and very smoothly. This is one of my favorite entries, though it feels more like a concept piece than something I'd want to keep playing after the first couple of levels.

SDLInfection by Endurion

Other than the slurpy sound effect, I like it. It would be nice if stacks (of 2 or more units) looked different from singles.

Zombies by MattD

For some reason, some zombies die when shot, but some don't...if that's supposed to happen, they should look different.

Kitten Carnage by Algeroth

Grr...21 megs of .NET download for this? Still, I have to respect any game that includes a kitten mower.

I like the idea (reminds me of Daleks, but with more stuff). I hate the different block heights, as sometimes they obscure things. (A movable camera would be nice, or an isometric display - 2D with icons, maybe) The GUI looks good; there need to be obvious keyboard commands for bombs and nukes. Sound is good, needs more.

InnerBody (FINISHED) by mrfun

This is a great idea - the gameplay is simple, and (as far as I know) new, but it's still challenging. I even went back a couple of times and tried to beat the lung level.

Graphics and sound are quite good. Some background art would be nice, but I can't complain because I didn't build any background art either :)

Vaccinator by Negator

This is a great idea. One addition I'd like is a line on the right showing how many cells can die before the level is lost.

Nanodominance by rtf

Hmm...alternating P and A seems to always win.

Innoculator4x4 by smx

My favorite part was driving in circles, until my speed wrapped around to going in reverse :)

Nanoterror by deeno

Looks good so far. The rotating antigens look good, the scrolling is nice and smooth, and I like the fact that the game has more accurate biology than most. I think this could become a fun game.

Infected Blood by filami

Nice soundtrack. Could use more sound effects.

Background art looks neat, but is maybe a little distracting (I think notching the brightness down would be good).

Gameplay is nice, but VERY familiar; I think I've played 10 versions of this game. I would have liked to see some more new twists added. Maybe enemies to dodge, maybe rotating items you have to approach from the right angle, maybe doors that open and shut...anyway, something different :) The different wall-sets are a step in the right direction.

Tekram-S (v1.1) by Sol_HSA

Interesting. It might be good to have a limit on the round length. Otherwise, it can become a war of attrition...I played one level a long time before finally giving up.

Youve Got COOTIES!! (FINISHED) by EricDB

A like it! Reminds me of tetris crossed with...I don't know, Bejeweled maybe. Attract mode is cute, and the logo makes me think of a Yoshi game somehow. The graphics are not bad at all. (I think the board could use a solid black line at the top, for symmetry)

It's hard to survive very long; I found myself wishing for more 4-square (or even 3-square) pills and fewer plus-es and 2x3s. Once the gray cooties get a foothold, they're almost impossible to stamp out... I think it'd be nice to make things a little easier (or divide into rounds, so that even when they greys are taking over, there's some hope of making it to the next board).

It occasionally crashes on my machine, and it needs a perky little theme song, but other than that this entry is utterly delightful.

Shroom Virus Defence by missingdialtone

Very original. (Even the spelling in the instructions was creative :) Having to tap the keys to move everywhere gets tiresome after a while. I felt like I was doing pretty well for a while - fenced in the shrooms, then fenced in some of the buddys. But then it rained, and I was sad.

Gonorrhoids! by sinsolent

Wow, what a lot of particles. VERY satisfying explosions. That's 1 fun point right there :) The biohazard guys on the title screen look great.

There's not much motivation to fly around (I just hovered in midscreen); maybe if some enemies aimed at you isntead of the houses, or maybe if sitting on a house could gradually fight off of infection.

Anti-Botic by tomkh

Wow...26 kb. And it looks great. Sounds good, too.
