LD10 — Chain Reaction (9)

Final Release by XMunkki

Looks very impressive. Needed some time before I figured out I had to open those two subfolders and install what is in them. After that, it worked for a bit before Vista froze as a hole and forced me to pull the plug. I don't think this Vista was booted more than 1 or 2 times, so no idea if this was even related - I still had played the first 3 or 4 levels before the freeze though so rating anyway. The gameplay seemed quite innovative to me, but the rotating camera was a bit confusing. Also the moving and aiming seemed a bit fiddly, and there was no sound - all small details which added up to make it not as much fun as it could be.

Ohh, the music immediately caused this nostalgic feeling.. also the graphics went perfectly with it.. and.. also the gameplay. 20 years ago I would have had fun with this for hours and days. But nowadays, I barely made it through the first level with the last pixel of energy and then was overwhelmed by all the possibilities created by different mirror configurations in level 2. There was no point retrying level 2 as there was nothing to remember - I'd have started with it where I started the first time, just randomly turning mirrors. So, I guess, the problem level design - which just takes lots and lots of time. Your level 1 probably should be level 10, and then 9 levels before which manage to have much less mirrors but still be fun.

Nice game. Very simple - and yet fun.

THE CAVES OF INSANITY!! by philhassey

Very nice. And excellent level design. Level 5 seemed quite impossible at first, but once I found the trick of re-connecting each time the initial spark went round it got easy - even for me using the mouse with the left hand :)

Marble Bomb by NyanNyanKoneko

I love the background graphics and music. The only really chain reaction was in level 4 - but at the same time I also completely lost control of the marble. Level 3 already was hard - I think the boost you get by the red marbles is too strong, basically I just tried a few times to hit the first one as slow as possible until the second one got me to the exit. Level 4 just seemed to go on forever then when I looked back I was thrown back to level 1.

Mr. Splode by lexaloffle

I love platformers, so was a bit biased for this, resulting in high scores in general. But after starting the 10th time at the beginning, I ran out of time to to try more often. Might get back to this one later and raise the fun rating above average then. The fireworks idea is great in any case - to solve the start-at-beginning problem, I can see two ways:
1. Add some health vials or shops or re-spawn spots or continues to make it easier, so you have a chance to finish at first try.
2. Or add a score and bonus objects and more variety to the levels to increase replayability when you die in a later level.

Short Fuse by Hamumu

Got a chance to try some games in Vista today, started with this, so hard to compare yet - but so far it's a clear winner. Only 5 categories I didn't rate it 5 - but maybe I have to lower this if the other games I try are better :)

Final entry! I’m late! by DrPetter

The first two times I started it it crashed (using Vista). The third time it would run. You get 5 audio points just for making sfxr :) About the game, the chain-reacting floor should need some explanation (or was there one in the scroller? didn't read it all..) but after I had filled everything I still didn't win. I also wasn't quite sure what the point was in raising/loweing the floor with the mid-air z. Also, z is quite hard to reach on qwertz keyboards, so a minus point in polish for hardcoding it. The graphics and that you wrote an isometric engine in an LD are amazing.

Mission Accomplished! Or, as Confucius would say, To go beyond is as wrong as to fall short by Deepflame

Nice puzzle game. I only played to the level called "so near and yet so far" (4 or 5), might revisit this one later, likely it is above average fun (as I rated it right now).

This was probably going to get fun 3 or 4, if it wasn't for the giants. They are just hilarous.. and of course, my first encounter was special, since in the middle of level 2, I finally had figured out that you can pick up dropped beans again, so I test-jump-dropped one, then chased after it to the right - when suddenly a big giant jumped at me and gave me a real shock! As for innovation, planting beans to climb up seems a quite innovative idea for a platformer to me. Production, there could of course be much more polish, but of course, it also is quite good already, with intro screen and multiple levels. Graphics are in a blocky 3d style, with excellent animation. Sound is great, the tapping sound synchronized to the feet, the distant clicking sound of the giant, death sound - if there was some background environment sound or even music, this would get 5.

Well, I played all through the last level, so this has to get fun 5. In the last level, got 2390 people, argh, only 100 more! I also find this quite innovative. Production is excellent, even has a tutorial mode. Graphics are very nice (for 5 I'd like to see the people actually walk and carry stone/trees/water though instead of just overlaying rectangles).

This game seems really innovative to me, and has excellent graphics. I had a hard time getting it to run (the online java thing would time out on my connection, ant couldn't find "/F:/My Stuff/Code/Shaven Puppy Game Library", and I had no idea how to run the binary, so ended up installing it all into my local apache just to run it), but it was worth it. In this LD48 version, it gets quite repetitive after the first few levels, and then some level, i think level 20, suddenly is very hard (the one where on the right, a leave is pointing down so you can't jump on it). But the basic idea is rather fun, and a very nice game could be made out of this. Also, I never knew how much time I had still left (or whatever else the reason was that level suddenly ended and it would start back in level 1)..

The text is rather humourous, and this also makes it somewhat fun to play. I find the interface quite innovative, it's not what you usually see in LD48 games. Production, I played the linux version, and I couldn't figure out how to quit, or how hungy I am. But, there's at least instruction which tell you that you can click on things - something I think I would have figured out, given there's a mouse pointer Graphics are all hand-drawn, even the fonts, it gives the whole game a distinctive style.
