The game could use some balancing. Maybe it is due to the timing issues you mention. It would be cool if the ship would accelerate up and down when you press/release the keys.
The three different movement modes are a great idea. With some refinements and balancing this could end up pretty cool.
Reminds me of the game sheeps.
