Nice!

theseusinabottle 2023-01-08 22:34

Dang congrats of you inevatible top 100 placement. This is really good and really fun. I can imagine myself playing this for hours as a kid during computer free time in school. The music is bopping and the actual gameplay has a good progression to it. Absolutely outstanding.

coatline 2023-01-09 01:54

I played this twice around and got 2nd at the leaderboard (I'm sure that won't stand for too long)! Coming from someone who has played a lot of typing games, this far surpasses most if not all other typing games I have ever played, even the multiplayer ones. And to think that you made it in just 48 hours or so is crazy. Everything is greatly polished, I like the music and sounds, and I like how the scoring works. There is also lots of room for expanding on this to make it even cooler. Overall, I expected nothing less from a game that you made -- high quality, satisfying fun. Great job!

kristinamay 2023-01-09 04:12

Love your games! I like that we both made word games, yours is way different from mine though. I nabbed the third place spot, though I'm sure I'll have to defend it when I wake up in the morning. One thing I noticed was that sometimes a word would start thinking it was being typed when I was trying to type a different one, and then sometimes I'd start typing a word that was far away and it wouldn't register at all. I really liked that I had to try to remember words as I was going because your lil character runs right away from them! Anyway, thanks for a fun and polished lil adventure that I, as one of the commenters wrote above, DEFINITELY would have played for hours in computer class in high school.

antti-haavikko 2023-01-09 05:37

@coatline Thanks, big praises! I haven't really played that many typing games myself, I think Typing of the Dead might actually be the only one. πŸ€”

@kristinamay It doesn't really lock to a word you're typing. So you could technically even correctly fill some tiny word while writing some longer one.

typefarmer-double.gif

And there should be no distance limitation at all. My guess would be that you just saw the word wrong in those cases. There are a lot of weird words that by a glance look like common ones. πŸ˜… Or another reason is similar to the what is shown in the above gif. If the word you're remembering and trying to type starts with the same letter(s) as the previously typed ended, then typing the first letter again will fail it.

elastiskalinjen 2023-01-09 07:56

I am not fast when typing, but it was still really fun! I really liked that you moved around on the field, made it so that you sometimes have to remember words you can't see anymore!

antti-haavikko 2023-01-09 08:22

@elastiskalinjen Yeah I tried to make it not just about typing speed. Typing accurately is more important and there is also a distance multiplier which gives more score when you do those remembered off screen fills.

joey-shipley 2023-01-09 13:36

Amazing concept, game is well put together. I woke up the next day still surprised at how much I liked a 'typing' game, not really my bag of tea. Hope you consider taking this further, you have something interesting on your hands. :)

tanis 2023-01-09 18:35

As usual a very solid entry, congrats!

I managed to get 6th place so far  Typefarmer_by_anttihaavikko.png

That character that wanders around to harvest the crops after you finish typing is really cool. The game would have probably worked even without that, but it adds so much to the overall feeling.

I noticed that sometimes the last letter that you type as part of the word is also being highlighted as the initial of a different word. I saw the comment from @kristinamay and it doesn't really look like it is just a smaller word contained in a longer one. It really looks like the last letter you type is also becoming the first of a different word, but not all the time.

Taking into account speed and accuracy and having multipliers was a good choice. I am pretty sure it would have become repetitive and not so entertaining if you only had speed in mind. Nicely done!

I played the web version and I can tell you that from a non-native English speaker, the scrolling that happens while the character is moving around is making it really hard to read some words. "C" and "G" can be easily confused due to the scrolling that is not smooth and some of the words well... I didn't even know them so either I learned some new terms or you have some nonsense words in your dictionary

As much as I like the music, it gets boring after a while. I believe that's mainly because it is a short loop with a fast bpm.

The "any key" is literally ANY... when I wanted to take a screenshot of the leaderboard I had to switch to the app I use to take screenshots using the mouse as pressing alt-tab would start the game

Overall I believe you already have one of the top entries here, well done!

antti-haavikko 2023-01-09 19:00

@tanis Yeah that's how it's supposed to behave. So if you write CAR and also have RAM there somewhere, the R will be already marked. And if there is ARSE, you get two starting letters. It's intentional behaviour and the key to really making your multiplier go up.

I'm a non-native English speaker too and didn't face any major issues with those. Of course there are loads of uncommon and weird words in the dictionary and quite often at a quick glance you will mistake something for some other more common similar "looking" word.

Well it's not that "any" really. It also ignores mouse click and left/right and A/D πŸ˜…

miloti 2023-01-09 21:30

Very very fun game! The visuals and the music work really well together, but what stands out for me is the combo implementation! At the end it gets a bit too hectic to track but in the midstages nailing the end of a word and beggining another parallelly feels so good.

I saw some words in other languages besides english, so I'm curious how the game is generating its internal dictionary to spawn words.

Anyway, I managed to snag the 6th place, let's see how long it lasts!

fancyreckless 2023-01-09 22:26

Started out with "welp, just some typing game", but soon enough I realized how fun it is. Really like the pace and chaos that you get when you trying to type in plants that you ran by already.

antti-haavikko 2023-01-10 05:20

@miloti It has a dictionary of words it picks from. Found that list somewhere few years back and been using the same one for all my word game needs.

https://github.com/anttihaavikko/typefarmer/blob/main/Assets/Misc/enwords.txt

@fancyreckless Haha yeah that's how the game also kinda happened. Started off with no great ideas on what to make so I started making a typing game. But when I made the camera follow the player and having the player be the origin of spawning new plants was when it clicked to me that this could be kinda fun and interesting. Then I piled on on that aspect and added the distance based score bonus etc.

rickylee 2023-01-10 18:56

Another banger! ^^ my score \o/

100th-coin 2023-01-10 19:48

I love the animations of the lil guy. My dyslexia definitely threw a wrench in any chance I had for a good highscore though, ha! The music slaps, and the sound effects are great. Nice work.

labete 2023-01-10 19:52

Cool game, groovy music, fun to play. Well polished, I can only envy such skills, especially at time management :)

juutis 2023-01-10 20:05

Wow, for a typing game that was insanely fun.

My only gripe is that failing a word resets the word fully _even if the mistyped letter was the first letter of the word_. Using the example from the previous comments, if you have the words CAR and RAM, the fastest way to type them would obviously be C-A-R-A-M. In my opinion, also C-A-R-R-A-M should be acceptable, but currently typing C-A-R-R will fail RAM and reset it fully, which results to you having to retype the first R again. So, you actually have to type C-A-R-R-R-A-M.

This is obviously a super tiny detail, but I found myself making this mistake multiple times. I couldn't just type words I saw on the screen but I had to actually think if the previous word ended with the same letter(s) as the next one. In the later stages of the game when the going got hectic this actually added a fair bit of cognitive load that I felt unnecessary and it slowed me down considerably. That goes doubly for when there were multiple shared letters.

antti-haavikko 2023-01-10 20:21

@juutis Thanks! And congrats on dethroning me from the number one spot. That took longer than I expected. I don't think I'm really any good at typing.

Yeah I actually kept failing on that same "trap" while I was playing it too. But stubbornly kept it like that thinking that it makes the scoring more interesting. Which I still think it does but hope it doesn't make it too bad in contrast.

jeremy-ryan 2023-01-11 02:06

Nice, polished game as always!

This was a really interesting take on the normal typing game formula. The movement of the little farmer guy meant that there was a bit of strategy to the order and positioning of the words you type. I will say I had the same quibble as @juutis and others about typing the first letter of a word that you happened to get from a previous word is penalized. Other than that it played very smoothly and the bouncy animations and bits of polish really brought it to life.

I will say this felt a little bit smaller scoped than some of your previous compo games. It would have been neat if there were upgrades or some other secondary mechanic to add some extra depth. But of course 48 hours is not very long and you already have a ridiculous amount of polish, a solid core mechanic, and *online high scores,* so it's hard to complain about scope all things considered.

Great work on this, and good luck during the rest of play and rate!

Screenshot 2023-01-10 195532.png

antti-haavikko 2023-01-11 05:34

@jeremy-ryan Thanks! Yeah it was indeed a bit downscoped as I had less time to dedicate this weekend, maybe around 20 hours instead the usual 30ish. And I spent quite a lot of time in the beginning just thinking of ideas on what to do, the theme felt really to shoehorn into just farming or grim reaper.

Dang, just now I actually misspelled reaper and found out a way to combine both, Grim Rea**pear**. 😜🍐

moonizz 2023-01-11 10:41

Great typing game, it gets hectic after a while when the words get longer

The only issue I had was when I was running long distances and things spawned "near" the edge and I missed the word because I'm slow. And sometimes I couldn't get back to those words. Other than that, wonderful experience :D

Typefarmer.png

kepsert 2023-01-11 11:46

My teammate Moonizz showed off his high score so I had to go and beat his high score!

Lovely game, the graphics did what it have to do, the music was catchy and a bop (albeit slightly repetitive), and I do love myself some typing games. Some words had me confused haha, interesting choices of words at times! The one issue I ran into is that sometimes it would consider me typing the first letter of a word while I was still in the middle of another word, but keeping my eyes open on the visuals helped me out there!

Thanks for the submission!

antti-haavikko 2023-01-11 12:40

@kepsert Haha, that is the power of online leaderboards! 😜 But looks like he also improved his score while you were at it.

kepsert 2023-01-11 12:43

@antti-haavikko It's okay he's not invited to our next jam LOL Jk jk, I'm trying to beat him back but I'm running into a light problem where the game sometimes thinks I'm typing a different word than the one I'm actually typing, trying to figure out how to get around that and then I'll get back at him!

antti-haavikko 2023-01-11 12:45

@kepsert It doesn't lock you to any word, it just fills every word that matches the letter you press (and resets everything that doesn't).

moonizz 2023-01-11 12:56

I decided to come back and play a couple more times. I'm just going to leave this here. :D Great game @antti-haavikko ! Typefarmer2.png

bloodycoin 2023-01-11 13:35

Great game, seems like another successful entry in your word-games series  What are your thoughts on zooming out camera a bit when you have bigger streak going, so you can queue in more words? (Unless this is already happening, I am not that fast of typer) So far my preferred strategy was: 1. remember one word at one side of screen; 2. type another word at the other side of screen; 3. type-in word in memory (step 1), scan for new word type in step 2, so will be at max distance from word in step 1; 4. repeat step 3..

The only problem, is if I fail one of the words, I will be left in place with no words for some time. And I can't type I have in memory, because of some their weird spelling :joy:

Other than that - another great entry

antti-haavikko 2023-01-11 14:38

@bloodycoin Yeah guess that might have been a cool idea to zoom out a bit for more of a skill ceiling. And that is definitely the intended tactic. Not sure if it's the best though, at least with my typing skills it isn't enough to keep up with these players surpassing me on the leaderboards. πŸ˜…

And nicely kinda randomly found out that some weird words or spellings sooner or later come up and mess up your streak. That's the fun of having a huge dictionary with some weird monstrous words in there.

Thanks for the feedback! ❀️

aurel300 2023-01-12 13:56

Very addictive! 3rd place for now but I think I'll return! "tzardom" was a fun word to type for the first time in my life.

The game is clean and polished. The looks are nice and the music is great, it doesn't get old too quick. Gameplay-wise I think I agree that zooming out might be nice, although I do also like the "strategy" of remembering words so that you can ping-pong for max distance bonuses. Still, you could do this by consciously choosing words that are far from each other when you can still see them :) It does suck a bit that you cannot see words which are filling up your overgrowth bar, maybe you could just control the farmer to move that way? The score popups that show whenever you harvest a word are nice but occasionally they get in the way of other words that I would like to see. Likewise I think words which were already typed (yellow) could be made smaller to reduce visual noise.

Oh, another thing that I think should be changed: if I already typed the first letter of a word, then type that same letter again, it cancels the progress on that word completely. So, I have to type that first letter for a *third* time, then continue writing the rest of the word. This is especially annoying when I "accidentally" start writing a word because it starts with the same letter as the last letter of the previous word. Since I am still typing that last word in auto-pilot I don't really want to think of the shared letter(s) as I am selcting the next word to type on screen.

antti-haavikko 2023-01-12 14:51

@aurel300 Yeah so many people have mentioned that double letter punishment thing that it must be a "real" issue then. Of course I was hit by it too but stubbornly kept it like it was so actually discourage too much of an autopilot mode and needing to actually pay more attention.

antti-haavikko 2023-01-12 14:56

@aurel300 Oh and you always see the overgrowth plants. Plants only spawn around you and when there are 10+ unfilled on the field you lose. Of course if you're already running to another spot, you might just get a glimpse of a word just spawning in and have no real way to intentionally get back there.

kikiriki367 2023-01-13 00:31

The starting of other words when finishing the last is a bit annoying true. But it could be fixed easily by not punishing players when they double write the same first letter of the word, like a bool value. But more importantly it can lead to an interesting puzzle game :)) Like a level where you have 5 words which have similar endings/beginnings and then figuring out how to clean all the plants in least button presses possible... Sorry for the digression :D.

Apart from that the game is great, simple yet really polished and fine tuned to make it a great experience!

jason-wilson 2023-01-13 15:43

This is an extremely well done game! The animation and audio were topnotch. The leaderboard was a nice touch.

I found that I ended up with quite a few plants offscreen that were hard to get back to. I guess it was a matter of which plants I choose to harvest first and the direction they were taking me.

Great stuff!

don-fouts 2023-01-13 15:48

This was an incredible entry, awesome job!! I love the simplicity of the character and how smooth and polished everything feels. The music is pretty catchy also. Sometimes the character would walk to the vegetable pushing other off screen causing me to wait for another to pop up but I assume that's part of the challenge.

annie-owl 2023-01-13 16:42

Great game! Comboing words and trying to write the next one on the run, while it quickly drifts out of sight is so much fun, and upbeat music makes the process even better.

aurel300 2023-01-13 18:02

Got it :) Sorry for the duplicate entry: apparently entering the same name on a different machine makes the entries separate.

Screen Shot 2023-01-13 at 19.01.30.png

kyrio 2023-01-14 12:50

The idea seems simple but the execution is extremely polished! Apparently I'm 5th in the leaderboards now, haha. It's too bad the game doesn't explain much, I had to look at the comments to think about using the last letter of a word to start the next, in order to keep the multiplier up. Of course that's communicated through colors in the game but in the heat of the moment you may not pay attention, haha. You might also be disturbed by some words "failing" while you type another, thinking it gives you a penalty when it doesn't.

I like the fact that the systems are quite simple in the end; there are bonuses but not for speed and accuracy as one might think. The speed is only important to keep the number of crops down, and accuracy is to not lose your multiplier pointlessly by "wasting" letters without clearing words. So in the end you really only have to care about the overgrowth and your multiplier and that's where the strategy lies. It encourages you to wait for more words to appear so you can plan ahead, but not too much... I don't think I've done that a lot to get my 160k score (still wondering how that happened) but it's wickedly smart, congrats!

antti-haavikko 2023-01-14 13:25

@kyrio Thanks for playing and the feedback! ❀️ The words "failing" does not really penalize you at all. Well I guess just the fail sound and shake might spook and confuse. The multiplier loss happens every time you hit a key, no matter if it's correct or not. So if you're writing a word and other keeps failing due to it, it doesn't really do anything. Yeah really thought that just showing the already written part with different color and animation would be enough to show how it works. And I didn't want to (over) explain the scoring mechanic etc as that isn't really needed to understand to play.

jitspoe 2023-01-14 15:39

Really nice, polished entry! My... type of game!

Some of the strange words really tripped me up, the first time I saw them, though. Interesting choices. πŸ˜…

arzi 2023-01-14 17:36

As much as I commend your dedication to making word games, this one was a bit light on the theme  Otherwise very good and polished typing game!

yorsh 2023-01-14 19:24

Very well made ! The game feel is really amazing. Graphics are very clean, especially texts and particles. I think the distance bonus is a great idea, to make it more interesting than a classic typing game. My only issue with gameplay is that when you are doing fine, you only have one word to type, and you have to type it to trigger a new word, so it kind of take away the distance bonus effect. It's probably better to go slower at first to let a few words spawn so you get better bonuses, but then it kinda punish players for typing too fast.

amarokczukay 2023-01-14 20:47

so much polish! this game is great, i was completely absorbed by it when playing. Smooth graphics, nice music (adds a bit of tension). i want to live in a world where ALL these words exist.

leaderboard, beware, i'm coming

Capture d’écran 2023-01-14 aΜ€ 21.58.01.png

meep 2023-01-15 03:32

Really fun typing game :D I found the score/multiplier mechanics really interesting- they appear to update real-time and get applied the moment a crop is collected (as opposed to when a word is fully typed), leading to a strategy of typing bursts of words and waiting to press more keys so the multiplier actually gets used.

image.png

slantyoj 2023-01-17 01:02

Super well done, really smooth, and the leaderboard certainly encourages replay. The only issue I had is sometimes there wouldn't be a word in view as there's a slight delay before a new one spawns, and sometimes I would have started a word and it would go offscreen.

grid96 2023-01-17 22:14

fun and exciting game! was really tempted to type again for this one. tried it with speech to text instead but that was not recommendable... I think my PC was screamed at enough for day :D

ava-skoog 2023-01-22 22:46

So much fun, very addictive! Learning lots of silly words. Just really polished in every aspect. Landscape is perhaps a little barren but it does help you focus on the words, especially once they bunch up. Music is really good and helps me get into the groove. Love the barks. Cute character with a neat animation and a simple but effective mechanic.

Not the first typing game I've played but I usually like them 😁 One thing that tripped me up a few times is how the final letter of a finished word seems to count as the first letter of another while I expected it to reset after I finished a word. It's probably actually a nice feature to get more words down faster tho, so long as you're aware of it.

I'm just grasping for straws to provide any kind of helpful criticisms tho. This was super well done!!

alexascher 2023-01-23 09:16

Very nice mechanics, I love it!

bradur 2023-01-23 19:35

Quality game as expected! There is so much polish here it's a breeze to play. My only complaint is this game lets me know how bad I am at typing!

I think I'm going to take a gander at the source to see how you did that font wave effect... I'd like to steal it πŸ˜‚.

antti-haavikko 2023-01-24 05:38

@bradur Sure, feel free to grab it. Just by slap the component on TMP object and :tada: https://github.com/anttihaavikko/typefarmer/blob/main/Assets/AnttiStarterKit/Animations/WobblingText.cs

@ava-skoog Thanks for the feedback! ❀️ Yea I guess having some light vegetation and more irregularity on the ground coloring would help with the emptiness. The end and next word start matching was indeed intended as a scoring mechanic but it seems to trip people up quit a lot. Very surprised that no one has recognized those barks yet. πŸ€” Maybe Tetris Attack wasn't such a big hit that people have those sound effects engraved to their brain like I do. And I guess it was a while ago too...

juutis 2023-01-24 15:33

@antti-haavikko I think having the previous and next word match is a fine mechanic for scoring extra points. The problem is now the player is penalized for not doing it. If you have the words CAR, RAM and ARSE, you could have it so that CARRAM is accepted and scored normally. CARAM scores some additional points and CARSE even more extra points.

m2tias 2023-01-27 17:41

And I thought the blood orange I had for breakfast would be the juiciest thing today. Not even close! This was so much fun compared to other typing games.

ava-skoog 2023-01-27 23:02

@antti-haavikko: Yeah, haven't played that but I really liked the sounds either way! c:
