really good atmosphere although i dont see how it adheres to the theme, am i missing something? also really good artwork! i would suggest adding an actual combat system in sections with fights, would really up the fun factor

kjscott 2020-04-20 21:21

The presentation of the book style journey was great, and the audio went very nicely along.

I think in the theme of a book it would have been nice if the choices would have been inside the book, on the page at the end of the text giving more of an impression of interacting with it.

I played through about a dozen times before I stopped, so I didn't get to see every ending so I was curious as to how the rest of the story would unfold.

louis-hayes-greenwood 2020-04-20 21:30

Great music really brought me into the world nice work!

chocolat-endive 2020-04-20 21:31

@play-pause-games The game is about keeping a memory alive. We thought it would fit the theme! As for an actual combat system, it was planned but we didn't have enough time for it (there is a HP and bonus attack system that we made but is not used).

@kjscott Thanks for your comment! There sure is some improvement that can be make to the UI.

geegaz 2020-04-20 21:36

I really liked the ambience set up by this short game ! It's amazing how, in this short time, you managed to create this whole universe. Although as stated before, I don't really see how it fits the theme ? Still a great experience ^^

chocolat-endive 2020-04-20 21:44

@louis-hayes-greenwood Thanks! It was really fun to record this one.

@geegaz Thanks a lot! Most of my time was used to write the "book" while Bouteille was creating the code for the game. As for the theme, the game is about keeping a memory alive, but I guess it was not really ovious since you're the second person telling us that they did'nt understand it. Thanks for your comment!

noel-widmer 2020-04-20 23:53

The music was amazing. I wish I was able to compose something like that. I would have loved to feel a bit more "born into the world". The story starts and I didn't really felt very connected to the character. I am not good storyteller myself (that's why I can't give exact tips). I just felt like watching the story unfold and not being a big part of it. Maybe a goal early on would have helped. I really liked it aside from that :D

chocolat-endive 2020-04-20 23:57

@noel-widmer Thank you! The game would indeed be really improved with more depth for the main character, and more choices to make. It was quite difficult to write (and translate, since we're not native english speakers) all of this in 3 days. We're quite happy with the result but you're right.

adi62473 2020-04-21 00:31

The music, was amazing and it really brought me into the world of the game although I didn't fully understand the story so, as a feedback for next time, it would be really awsome if the story was clearer. But other than that, amazing game

zwinzler-games 2020-04-21 00:38

The story is wonderful and I want to play throughout it many times! I do feel as if it was difficult to tell when people were talking, but other than that, I thought it was great. It was very unique and I appreciate that. Great job!

elbapotsnugg 2020-04-21 01:36

Love the music and the ambiance. The artwork and the storybook theme really tie it all together.

kent-reese 2020-04-21 04:32

Nice story, I loved it. The premise is novel and it fits well with the theme.

aditya-kumar 2020-04-21 04:45

Great text adventure. Really takes me back to those old choose-your-own-adventure books. My team attempted something similar, but we ended up with a very different sort of game. I liked the atmospheric music, and the interpretation of the theme is quite profound

fizzyapple12 2020-04-21 05:04

I like the aesthetic you gave to this classic choose your own adventure game! It looks really good!

lucien-catonnet 2020-04-21 09:24

Interesting text adventure, I've only played it once though, it's kind of sad to be missing on content :/ The music is really neat, it gives a really great atmosphere! The inventory system didn't end up feeling necessary in my playthrough... I really like how you interpreted the theme! Congratulations on having no time management issues, that's always the hardest part in the end :D

gimblll 2020-04-21 11:21

A nice little story, thank you for the experience.

pisito 2020-04-21 11:43

Keeping a memory alive OMG

chocolat-endive 2020-04-21 11:43

Thanks everybody! @lucien-catonnet the inventory system is more a concept than a real gameplay mechanics. It works, and one on the ending depends on it, but it's indeed not really useful or necessary during the playthrough.

valisse21 2020-04-21 13:21

Thank you very much for such a nice experience! I enjoyed reading a great 'book' with a nice background music and participating in a story.

arinyl 2020-04-21 14:25

This was a very good game! Loved the stories and different endings (even tho I'm sure I didn't get all of them). The little drawings added a nice touch, and the music was on point!

chocolat-endive 2020-04-21 14:27

Thank you @arinyl it was fun to write all of this, and we're happy to see people replaying the game to get other endings.

splitpainter 2020-04-21 16:41

The amount of content that you managed to pour into this is impressive. The atmosphere, due to the music, is so so good. Plus points for Godot and for mentioning the musical instruments (as for someone that is learning music, I appreciate it).

chocolat-endive 2020-04-21 17:58

@splitpainter Thank you! Hope you have fun learning music.

jlv 2020-04-21 21:22

I am a sucker for text-based narrative games, and this one really stood out as one of the most poetic/esoteric I have had the chance to play during a Ludum Dare. Fascinating story, supported by an excellent format, mysterious drawing and charming audio (sometimes reminiscent of tracks found in Type-Moon VNs).

Strengths - La version française, un oasis de confort dans un événement largement anglophone. - A mysterious and inviting tale, supported by sketches and great prose. - Marvelous audio.

Possible improvements - A very minor detail : changing the color of the color of the page or the text layout before the ritual starts / when it is over would make the strcture of the game a little clearer.

Super travail, merci beaucoup pour ce jeu !

astrolabe 2020-04-22 07:35

Very nice idea, well executed despite the limited time of the Ludum.

ponypen 2020-04-22 15:40

That was a really cool experience! I loved the sketches that supported the text throughout. It was fun participating in the story, if I were to critique I would ask for more colour So not much of a critique here really! :) x

mungobulge 2020-04-22 17:12

Interesting game. Really outside the box.

bebadboi 2020-04-22 17:15

nice job! I really loved the music and sound design here. It added a ton to this world. I'm not really used to playing these choose-your-own-adventure games, but the story was pretty interesting the further you get into it.

bisvilla 2020-04-22 17:21

Very nice drawing and audio is marvelous. A well-written story ( surtout en français ! ), i'll just maybe had some choices to react, with items you got or something, but i know it means work :)

Beau travail, à continuer ;)

julienlussiez 2020-04-22 17:23

Vraiment bien écrit ! Bravo.

snowirbis 2020-04-22 17:25

Ca fait plaisir de voir des bons jeux français !

Great story but a bit disappointed by the ends, when you have a setup like this, I would expect at least one end to give an element of answer to all the questions.

erkoply 2020-04-22 17:32

I'm a fan of interactive novels, and this one was fun to play! I liked how it gave me a lot of options. I didn't feel railroaded like some of these games end up doing. Nice atmosphere and good work!

thought-reactor 2020-04-22 17:52

Really gripping story! I'll have to go back and give it a couple more playthroughs, but it was really interesting. Loved the atmospheric music - it set a great tone and made the whole game feel eerie and mysterious. Excellent entry!

slimmerburger 2020-04-22 18:05

I loved the choice of music, it really helped the atmosphere, and the story was great. I think it could have used some animations between pages, but I still really liked it, nice one!

chocolat-endive 2020-04-22 18:15

Thanks everybody! @jlv Il y aurait en effet pas mal d'amélioration d'UI a faire en d'une manière générale pour rendre le jeu plus agréable.

@bisvilla We wanted to implement more mechanics with the inventory, but we didn't have enough time, so we just focused on the storylines.

@snowirbis Une des fins apporte plus d'explications que les autres. Néanmoins, cela reste assez mystérieux, et nous n'avons pas voulu apporter trop de réponse pour laisser planer un poil d'ambiance de conte/légende.

@slimmerburger Thank you! It was really fun to record this piece of music, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. Having some animations and maybe some kind of sound effects when using the buttons could indeed really improve the game

sophiemae0 2020-04-22 19:59

I had a lot of fun with this game! I love interactive story telling. The use of the music and the graphics made it compelling, I especially liked the illustrations in the book. Great job!

thedestoryer 2020-04-23 21:58

Really good writing but i wish there would be real consequences and benefits to your actions like helping the bandits or the knight.

mlho7 2020-04-23 22:51

Great piece of music, great ambiance, bravo.

whydoidoit 2020-04-24 10:00

I loved the music (actually left it on playing while doing some work lol). The story was detailed and eloquent. I'd love to see this come to life more, but that's always the problem with game jams, never quite enough time...

marcusnystrand 2020-04-24 10:31

Very brave to do a game like this I think! Nice unsettling mood with the soundtrack. Perhaps a bit short game but I understand the writing must have taken some time to get right.

Well done!

chocolat-endive 2020-04-24 14:46

Thanks a lot everybody!

@thedestoryer Yeah, there isn't a lot of consequences during the stories. Choices you make influence the ending, and that's all. If we make another game like this, we'll try to focus on this kind of mechanics (and inventory and combat).

@whydoidoit and @marcusnystrand We're also frustrated by the lack of content in our game, so I understand what you're saying. We had a ton of ideas, such as randomization of some events, other "branches" in the story, different kind of encounters some kind of "mise en abyme" of the whole story in the ruins (it just trigger an ending because we did'nt have enough time). I guess that making the game in two languages did'nt help us to create more content. Thank you for your comments about the soundtrack, it was really fun to record this piece of music, and I'm glad that you enjoyed it!

raomer 2020-04-24 18:29

That was a nice little text adventure. Music was fitting, i found it soothing. The mecanics were simple, but hey, its a text adventure. And its not eays to come up with a proper story and make it wortk in 3 days. More choiches to make would have been nice, but i understand the lack of it because of the time restriction.

marcusnystrand 2020-04-24 18:42

@chocolat-endive Dont worry about it, you did a great job!!!

nounka 2020-04-24 20:14

Congrat for your work all, I really liked the story (and the french version). Having something to control the sound would have been nice but well done =)!

raphiell 2020-04-24 23:14

Very fun to read, and also fun to go over a second time. The music was great and very fitting. Well done!

flipsy 2020-04-25 02:44

Very engrossing, great work. The music and illustrations really pulled me into the world. Well done.

joel-steudler 2020-04-25 03:26

I'm impressed with the amount of story you packed into a weekend's work. The music adds well to the atmosphere, too! I would have enjoyed more music as the story progressed.

vesper 2020-04-25 11:28

As the resident writer in my JAM team I know how time consuming writing this sort of branching narrative can be, and the fact that you managed to pull of this much content within the restricted time-frame is really impressive (and even more so if English isn't your first language). Bravo! I always hope find more text centric games during these Jams, but they are a rare breed.

Overall I thought the story was atmospheric and intriguing. The UI was simple, but it did the job and was easy to use, and the music really helped to cement the mood. I hope you manage to finish fleshing out the story! Nicely done.

madalaski 2020-04-25 18:30

A magical and ethereal piece that really makes good use of the theme. I loved the feel I got while playing it, reminded me of the Choose Your Own Adventure books of my childhood.

duck-reaction 2020-04-26 13:36

Nice game! I like the story and your universe with music which is very cool :) I would like some sounds for the immersion to illustrate the story or when you make a choice but it's a polished stuff, great job!

garygreen 2020-04-26 17:26

Very well written and engaging piece of interactive fiction. I liked the sketchy illustrations. The music was beautiful, and worked perfectly to help set the tone. :)

zondarg 2020-04-28 22:57

Very nice game, wonderful and atmospheric music and a beautiful presentation of this interactive tale. Well polished - playing the web version it would be nice if the window could be expanded to fullscreen, nevertheless.. very good!

fabula-rasa 2020-05-08 14:18

I enjoyed the general feel of the game. The music, the color choice, sketchy drawn graphics, the atmosphere. It felt like a story time by the fire. It felt polished and really well-thought-out. I enjoyed the story and wondered, can I achieve a different outcome at the end :). I will definitely play again and see.

Found some small mistakes in the text, but noting major. Like here there is "are carefully to listening your words", "to" is in the wrong place :) Screenshot_4.jpg

Overall, a great job!
