LD57 — Depths

Depth Delver by superpokeunicorn 2025-04-08T06:52:59Z

Extraordinarily charming short game. Very fluid movement mechanic with the whip, and loved the wall cling mechanic upgrade in the second half. Checkpoints were well-placed, music matched the aesthetic well. Only thing I missed is a functionality for the coins... wondering if there was something I missed or if the coins really were just for show. In my opinion, everything in a game should have a functional purpose (which doesn't necessarily have to be mechanical - for example, unlocking lore entries in games isn't mechanical but many pursue it out of curiosity). Also, there was a bit of a bug with the wall cling - if you were holding down a movement direction in air while trying to whip-cling, you could phase through the moving platforms. Fortunately I figured out what was causing it, but I could imagine some might miss that and be unable to complete the game. But that is a small issue, overall the game is very well made and that was just one little detail.

Depths of Madness by gold.daniel 2025-04-08T04:20:20Z

Always love things inspired by Lovecraft. Thought the intellect devourer style enemies were a nice touch. The mechanics were pretty simple overall, but able to provide an experience with a bit of a learning curve. I liked the upgrade system except for one very annoying issue - often, while attacking, I'd have the upgrade screen pop up and immediately disappear because I was clicking to attack. After a while, I just tried to be cautious about clicking when my fireball was about to hit an enemy in case that happened, and it was mostly effective. However, it would be preferrable if there was some way to prevent accidents like that. Apart from that, I will say I don't think the game really fit the theme, so I could not rate it high in that category. But otherwise: decent visuals, nice music, simple but engaging gameplay. Would like to see a more expanded edition of this.

Archeologic by auxC 2025-04-08T06:31:33Z

Very well executed. The balancing feels a bit off, I wasn't able to win a run until I got lucky with a bunch of bombs toward the bottom. It gets very difficult if you aren't able to keep the whole top layer cleared, and that is not very simple to do. Overall, simple gameplay with a charming graphical style.

The Misadventures of Sir Delaware Jones: In the Temple of the Wooden Skull by stmatn 2025-04-08T20:57:44Z

I like the simple mechanic, I can definitely see the inspiration from Ravensburger's Labyrinth that you confirmed was behind the idea. I also am someone who played that game as a child. Nice work, it's a fun little puzzle game to play around with.

The Moon Reconstruction Program by 100th_Coin 2025-04-08T22:11:37Z

Got to 98% completion of the moon and then got stuck. I think one of the "moondust" tiles inside of the wall trapped me, and even the "go back to safety" button wouldn't unstick me. Very sad, wanted to fully complete it :( But overall excellent game. I can hardly believe this was done in 72 hours, it's very impressive. The humor is great, loved the whole premise.

Leviathan by PopDaddyGames 2025-04-08T07:34:52Z

Simple overall... well executed, but just feels a bit bland to me. However, being a jam game, it is understandable that you would be careful to limit your scope to something like this - you were able to achieve that better than I was :)

Cubethulhu by Flying Dog Fish 2025-04-08T20:18:16Z

Had really bad frame rate throughout. The platforming mechanics were alright, other than I wish there was a way to quickly descend instead of only being able to float slowly. The music kind of sounded like some of Infected Mushroom's downtempo tunes, which I love.

Cubethulhu by Flying Dog Fish 2025-04-12T05:13:58Z

@flying-dog-fish yes, that did improve the performance significantly

Depthshift by Snotax 2025-04-08T19:56:28Z

Well executed, but kind of gives me a headache. A decent amount of levels for a 72 hour jam, I must say nice work on that.

Mine Goblin by maximevincent 2025-04-08T09:07:40Z

Hilarious game, funniest one I've played so far in LD57. You have a high rating from me!

From The Depths by Whysguy52 2025-04-08T21:39:49Z

Has potential, but left me wanting more. The bats were awkward to fight at times because they would float out of range briefly before swooping, which could be fine if intended, but without some kind of visual/audible indicator, felt more like a bug than the intended design. If you were able to implement even half of the things you mentioned that you intended to add, I think it would have felt much more full.

BY THE ABYSS!!! by infecsean 2025-04-08T19:16:21Z

Interesting concept, though I had a difficult time getting into it due to the camera jitter. Also, the health upgrade didn't seem to work - I purchased the upgrade three times and did not get an increase in my max health.

Mystical Caverns by sbackman 2025-04-08T21:16:34Z

A nice short 3d platformer. Could have benefitted from some form of tutorial or instructions to tell the player what they're trying to do. I didn't realize you could "win" until I had basically been playing around in it as a walking simulator for a bit, and then noticed that the map was trying to lead up to an end point. Though given all this was done in 48 hours, I understand that you can't always implement everything you want.

Into The Mousehole by Baldurs 2025-04-08T08:16:33Z

Not sure how I could even suggest a way to make things better... this game seems to be exactly what it wanted to be. A whimsical cat's dream. Mice with guns was so adorably hilarious, the music was wonderful, and the mechanics had a bit of depth without overwhelming. Brilliant work!

Trench Diver by Hatherton 2025-04-08T02:22:59Z

Very on-theme entry. Controls have a bit of a learning curve, and it isn't readily apparent how often you get to level up, but overall quite well done. The water effect really adds to the polish.

AM I ORTHODOX? by ZungryWare 2025-04-08T05:54:46Z

Extremely well done concept. Definitely fits the theme of "depth" because there's a lot of it. However, couldn't reach a satisfying ending, even by continuing to use the "hint" over and over again after all words were found. The audio and simple visuals were great. Though, some combinations felt unnatural or not very obvious, which often I could only find by getting a hint. Otherwise, brilliant concept.

Too Fishy by Jo Bettaque 2025-04-08T04:06:05Z

On the positive side, reminded me a bit of all those flash games I played as a kid where the gimmick was mostly buying upgrades to be able to get money faster so you could eventually get the most powerful upgrades and beat the game. On the negative, the blobfish was really annoying to deal with. Once you encountered it the first time, it would just keep chasing you down until it killed you. It would even chase you to the top of the map, which was really rather frustrating. I wanted to try to beat the game but I just couldn't get myself to keep going after the blobfish killed me while I was carrying a lot of valuable fish.

The Quota by ArkansasLover 2025-04-08T07:24:10Z

Nailed the creepy atmosphere, the ambient music and the sound effects really hit it home. Always felt the tension when one of the delirious workers was nearby - they were no joke to deal with. The timing of swinging the pickaxe and the strategy of kiting them around made the experience feel dangerous, but beatable. However, there were a few times where I thought I did my due diligence to check my surroundings, but would find myself being ganged up on by two enemies at once, which was pretty much just a death sentence since they will chase you to the ends of the earth.

An In-Depth Documentary about Pebbles by Neon Kuroasa 2025-04-08T22:34:35Z

Hilarious! The polish is astounding on this, and the puzzles kept my occupied for just a few minutes, a very appropriate amount of time for a jam game, I think.

Meanepth by rensun 2025-04-08T20:41:32Z

Incredible atmosphere, probably the most impressive I've seen so far in this jam. Fits the theme well. Bravo!

Trapped by depths by cRoxx 2025-04-08T07:50:14Z

A 3D entry, interesting. Kind of just felt like a walking simulator, though. Not really mechanically complex, and lacked an interesting objective. Nice ambience though, and I always like a low-poly aesthetic.

Doctrines - LD57 Game by Riggen 2025-04-08T06:09:54Z

Thought the aesthetic and gameplay concept were cool, but the card selection was very unnatural and some cards just didn't seem to work. Didn't really fit the theme in my perception either, at least in an obvious way. I want to rate this highly because I love card-based games like this but I think I just wasn't able to get the full intended experience due some bugs. Would be cool to see a more fleshed out version with more cards, fixed bugs, and more story. I don't want for this comment to discourage you, keep at it if you are able! I know a lot of people would love to see a game like this succeed.

Echo Abyss by Brain-dead Rabbit Games 2025-04-09T03:05:24Z

Generally well executed, except it sometimes seems to be impossible to dodge an obstacle. I think the player may need to be able to accelerate a little faster.

Spirit Lock by Brian Russell 2025-04-08T18:55:55Z

A great mechanic for a puzzle platformer, my only complaint is that there wasn't more to play! Music and artistic are great.

What Happened to Pinewell? by Pixelstain 2025-04-09T03:16:44Z

Very clever little puzzle game. I noticed that the information needed to proceed changes with each playthrough, which is a nice detail.

Light - Ludum Dare 57 by based.on.life 2025-04-08T08:05:23Z

Very nice atmosphere, as many here are also saying. Simple gameplay and some neat mysterious darkness creatures. Well done.

Race Through the Depths by Cure 2025-04-08T19:32:30Z

Overall pretty good, though I think some simple sound effects and ambience would have gone a long way to create an atmosphere around the gameplay. The movement mechanics were a bit unclear at first but once I figured it out it was pretty intuitive. Sound effects would help differentiate between a double jump and wall jump, though particle effects could also be used to indicate that.

Race Through the Depths by Cure 2025-04-08T19:58:02Z

@cure I totally understand, I had similar issues with my entry. I had much more I wanted to do but couldn't get nearly all of it in and had to cut a lot of planned content to meet the deadline.
