LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Sacrificium (Sacrifice) by Xeke-Death 2022-04-07T15:51:40Z

Dynamic music was well implemented and matched the vibe of the game really well. The visuals were also really good. It felt like the scope of the game was maybe too ambitious for the timeframe though and that lead to a lack of polish. The controls were a bit confusing for me and I was frequently walking perpendicular to where I intended to be. Also for a browser build I think it would be better to have the pause button be tab, as escape is used for exiting full screen. Overall I think you created something quite impressive with a strong sense of atmosphere and lots of individually well crafted elements but more thought could have gone into ensuring the game was fun to play.

Evacuation of Zorkid by SIGILL 2022-04-07T16:34:23Z

Good idea but lacking a little polish. The controls worked well and the economy system made sense but to understand the game you had to read a massive block of text and most people won't bother to do that. I think it's always better to have fewer mechanics and introduce them really well to the player than give the player loads to do but not explain how to do any of it.

Apo K'Lypse IV by Magic_mike 2022-04-07T16:20:20Z

I really love this one. I think that the idea is great and it was very well executed. Losing your loot when you get hit adds a nice element of risk and reward. I think overall though the game is too difficult, especially for a game jam. I was unable to even get the ship half way repaired and I think I played for quite a while. Other than the difficulty though, this is one of the most fun jam games I've played. Excellent job overall!

I saw that you mentioned a post jam version in another comment and I'm really glad that you're planning on doing that because I think this has a lot of potential. If I were to make a few small improvements for the post jam version, I would add a health bar for the planet to make it more clear how close to death you are (Although the changing background indicated this fairly well). Also fix the player stuttering in the camera. I would also add a button to confirm a purchase as navigating the shop menu using the mouse is reliant on the player already knowing what the upgrade does.

Oort's Escape by conduit.games 2022-04-07T16:47:12Z

I think the idea of a tower defence game where you protect earth from meteors is really good. Unfortunately I think that the game was too slow and it took far too many waves before you could place your second turret. Also when I was finally able to put my second one down, I experienced a glitch where the both of my turrets completely disappeared. Overall the game didn't feel interactive enough but I did enjoy the audio and the graphics. The UI was very clean and it was easy to understand what you were supposed to do.

Cereales Trading Simulator 2023 by sebbernery 2023-01-11T19:05:52Z

This was a very polished game. I think you did a really good job of communicating to the player what the games mechanics were. I knew exactly what I was supposed to do but I feel like it was maybe a little bit overwhelming how much choice you had. I think it would have really helped if each deal had a per unit price rather than just the total price. I'm really impressed with how good the simulation was though. Also for a game jam I doubt many people will want to play through 5 whole years. I had around $8000 near the start of year 2 and called it a day there. Great job on this! I'm amazed it was made in 3 days.

Glorious Pancakes by Local Minimum 2023-01-13T14:38:29Z

Really good game. I enjoyed all of the boss fights and I think they were all varied enough to keep the game fun and unpredictable. The story was nice and I was surprised the first time I died that the game just continued with less characters. Making a branching story game in a weekend is a big task and you did a great job. I ended up killing 3 of the family but I was scared for a bit that the berries would wipe me out because it took me a while to figure out how to harvest them. Overall I thought the game had a lot of personality and it was a lot of fun playing through it.

Call of the Harvest by Iak 2023-01-12T16:10:30Z

I thought this seemed very well made and I wouldn't guess it was made in only 3 days so good job! I love that you included an intro and cut scenes. I think you must have planned this game very well to be able to fit this much art into it. I was pretty confused when the gameplay started because I had no idea what I was supposed to do but once I found the first battle then it was all very intuitive. I was also quite concerned that I was going to die and be forced to start again but it seems like you have infinite lives which I love (especially for a jam where a lot of people would rather move on to the next game than restart). I really liked the battle system although I did have a few occasions where when I died I was respawn right on another hazard. I think an easy fix for this would be to give the player a second of invulnerability when then die to get themselves back in a safe position. Great job guys!

Poppy Defense by tiptoe 2023-01-10T11:10:22Z

I really enjoyed this. It seemed like a very complete game and I really enjoyed planning the enemies path. I think it started way too hard and I had to restart a lot of times before I found a configuration of defences that allowed me to get past wave 2. Once I had done that though then it seemed pretty fair. It took me a long time to realise that I could upgrade turrets but I enjoyed the visual changes when they upgrades. I wish I could see what the upgrades were actually doing though. It would be cool if it told me 150% damage or +20% range or something like that. Also it would be funny if once you unlock all of the turrets, you could upgrade your bushes to deal damage to taunt enemies or something like that. My only negative was the sound effects. I turned the sound way down because I thought the sound effects were pretty annoying and didn't add much to the game. Oh also the UI was crazy polished. Great job guys! Screenshot.png

Totally Normal Farming Simulator by Lawrence 2023-01-11T17:49:38Z

This was a very impressive entry. You managed to get so much done in a very short time and it was extremely well presented. I really enjoyed how this game started. When I harvested the first seeds and then replanted them it seemed like it was just going to be a totally normal farming simulator and I didn't at all expect to be sacrificing crows and eels to a workbench. Later in the game I found it a bit too difficult to know how to make progress. Once the furnace was lit I made glass and an anvil but I had no idea what to use them for. Also after experimenting with lots of different things my screen eventually became very cluttered with dirt and seed and other random items. I think a small change that would have made quite a big difference would be to just give the player more space. I think that would allow for more experimentation without feeling like you were being punished for getting things wrong. Also it would be nice if there was some kind of way of discarding items but I'm not sure how that could be implemented without risking the player throwing away an item that they need to progress. Good job overall! It's not often that you see a game jam game with this much content.

Crowings Do by PatrickRMC 2023-01-13T13:26:40Z

Well made game. I think you did a really good job of making the art feel alive. Even though most of the animations were just one drawing moving around I thought it was very effective and I liked the style a lot. The gameplay was well implemented and the controls were really good but I didn't feel like it had much replayability because at some point there are just too many things running around at the bottom of the screen and it comes down to luck whether you get a human or a corn. I think maybe it would have been better if they ran off of the screen at some point so that it's not just an ever increasing number of spawns. The audio was funny and had a lot of personality.

Souls harvest by PlusMinus 2023-01-13T14:04:38Z

Really great game. There seems to be a bit of a bug (I assume) where if you start a new game you keep your old deck but personally I think this gives it way more replayability so if that was an intended feature good job. I have been playing for quite a while and my high score is 144 but I'll probably keep playing for a bit longer. It did take me quite a while to understand what I was supposed to do and how to use the cards but once I got it then it's really fun. I especially like the split card and that it combos with rejuvinate. It seems like there are a ton of different cards to unlock which is really good but I think if I were to make one improvement I would maybe have spent some time trying to make a different enemy type for a little more variety. Overall I really enjoyed this and I think you accomplished a lot in one weekend.

Souls harvest by PlusMinus 2023-01-13T14:06:48Z

Just started a new run and got the sloth card. As soon as I tried to use it there was an error message that popped up and the game crashed. Not sure if anyone else has already pointed this out.

Menagerie Street by Evan Charfauros 2023-01-13T19:46:50Z

Very impressive game. I really loved the art style and it felt like a very polished and cohesive story. I really like the idea of interrogating all of the villagers and the dialogue system was great. It really felt like a load of neighbours gossiping with each other and learning about their scandals was pretty fun. Good job on such a clean and complete game.

Scythe by beats 2023-01-11T09:11:30Z

I really loved this. This is exactly what a game jam game should be. Th idea fits the theme perfectly but what I'm more impressed by is how simple it is. You managed to think of something that was really fun to play but also manageable to create in a very short time. The art is simple but it's clear what everything is. I would happily play this for another hour trying to get a new high score.

My only suggestion would be to make a custom cursor because I often lost my mouse in the business of the crops. I think that would be a big quality of life update.

Overall this is genuinely one of my favourite games I've seen for any jam. It might not be the biggest or the most polished game but I just think it perfectly captures the idea of seeing how much you can achieve in such a short period of time. I'd love to see how you could expand upon this idea if you spent more time on it. I can imagine this being a really fun local multiplayer party game where you have to try and harvest more than your friends on a bigger map. You could add powerups similar to those in Boomerangfu and hitting your friends could stun them for a short time.scythe.png

The Eversoul by Substain 2023-01-13T11:31:51Z

I thought this was a really strong concept. The core idea of having to harvest souls to summon knights that can attack the castle is very smart and I think it has a lot of potential. I think the game was lacking difficulty though. If you just summon 1 knight and then distract the enemies you can win very quickly. I think if you expand this game you should add some kind of ranged enemy and maybe also a boss enemy that you can't outrun so you have to stall it using the summoned guards in order to kill it. Overall though a very solid entry. Good job finding time to make menus and options.

Night of the Zombie Chickens by Jonqs 2023-01-11T18:25:30Z

When I started the game I had no idea what to do and then I saw the wheat and assumed I had to harvest it. After that didn't work I came back to this page to see if there were any more instructions and realised I was supposed to be killing chickens. It took me an embarrassingly long time to find the barn again because I was lost in the wheat field. I thought this game nailed the mood category with it's sound effects and visuals. The shop was also really well done and the day and night cycle gave the player a chance to spend some time in the shop. Unfortunately I felt like the gameplay seemed like an afterthought. You made a very nice farm scene and the game was pretty polished but all I could find to do was drive in circles to kill the chickens. I think if you spent some more time on this project then you could make something very impressive because a lot of the individual elements are really cool. If I were to make one small change that I think would make the biggest difference, I would change the perspective of the game so that you're watching the farm from above. I think that would make it easier to control the harvester but also easier to see where the chickens are.

Happy Piggy Farm 2 by TomatoOmelet 2023-01-12T13:22:41Z

I LOVE IT!

Such a funny game and an excellent jam entry. It's nice to see another game with a focus on dialog and story. I honestly didn't even care what the gameplay was because I was so invested in the story and the sentiment. I'm glad you didn't make it more punishing to fail a day. That was a really smart decision. I know you didn't make the music and sfx but they were still very well selected and I think they added a lot to the game. It seemed pretty luck based on whether you found enough apples or not but that didn't bother me because it kind of felt like it fit with the story. I like to suggest an improvement in each of my reviews but honestly this one was pretty perfect. If I were to add 1 thing though then I think it would be a hardcore mode where if you are the worst then you are eaten by the tigers. Mostly just because I'd like to see how you handled the dialog and visuals for that. Amazing job congrats.

Eat your fruits by aduermael 2023-01-13T11:42:00Z

I didn't get to match with an opponent but I still played around for a bit and I'm very impressed that you managed to get this working in a weekend. I don't think I've ever seen an online game made in a jam before so congrats. The gameplay seemed very intuitive and the concept was very on theme. I did find the jump sound effects a bit annoying but that's a very minor detail. I wish I could have matched with somebody to get a better idea of how combat works and whether you can hear their footsteps and grunts. If I were to make one improvement then I would suggest increasing the jump height. It was pretty hard to get where I wanted sometimes. Great job!

Thrown Harvest (for LD52) by matimat 2023-01-10T17:36:12Z

I think the player is required to read too much to know what to do. After figuring it out though, the idea is fairly original and the mechanics are all implemented well. One thing that slightly bothers me is that there isn't any reason not to fully charge a throw. At first I thought if I overshot then it wouldn't go in the basket but eventually I realised it goes in anyway. I think it would be too difficult if that was actually the case but maybe if holding down space made the aim oscillate between the furthest and closest points, it could be a cool mechanic.

Soul Harvest Hijinx (Shh) by honmey 2023-01-10T17:46:23Z

I really enjoyed this one. The controls weren't great but after a few levels I got used to it. The concept was really cool but to me what stood out the most was the level design. I feel like you made a well thought out mechanic and then explored it very thoroughly. I particularly liked the level where at the start you have to cross through an enemies sight quickly. That was a great way of teaching the player that sometimes you have to be seen and be quick. I also really appreciated that you added sound effects for when you are spotted because it adds to the tension. One change I would have made is making it more clear once someone has been harvested. In the early levels it's obvious because their light goes out but once there are lots of lights overlapping it becomes quite unclear.

Great job overall!

Power Spud Harvest by Pojo79 2023-01-11T11:02:35Z

This game was really well made and I didn't experience any bugs. I think that you definitely achieved the theme well and I enjoyed the arcade feel of the game. I think a couple of things could have made it feel a bit better: 1. I don't think the bullets should have a maximum range. Instead they should just be destroyed when they hit a wall. That way you are rewarded more for clearing space. 2. I think the players hit box felt a bit big. I sometimes felt like I died when an enemy wasn't quite touching me and I think it's always better to give the player a slightly generous hitbox so that they never feel like a death is unfair.

Overall I think you did a great job and you achieved a lot for the time given. I also think you got the difficulty level just right which is really hard to do.

Plant, Harvest, Make money! by huozhedexiaoc 2023-01-11T12:51:20Z

The game was pretty unintuitive and it took me a while to understand but once I knew what I was supposed to do I really enjoyed it. The puzzles were great and I thought the difficulty level was really good. I made it to the 3x3 puzzle and I tried it 3 times but kept getting 150. I was fairly sure I'd realised how to get a higher score but I accidentally refreshed the page rather than pressing the refresh button in game and I didn't want to go through all of the old levels again. I think a couple of simple things you could have added to make the game a bit better would be allowing the player to choose to go to the next level even if they didn't get the highest possible score and also changing the controls a bit. I would have much preferred the tools to be click to select the seeds and then click to sew rather than drag the seeds as this would make it more accessible. Overall I think you nailed the theme and made a really great puzzle game. In your next jam I would suggest focusing more on giving clearer instructions to the player.
