LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Puzzle Kids by jsmars 2018-12-05T21:11:48Z

It was interesting to see a more interactive experience combined with classic puzzle-piece placement. A fun, simple little concept! I wished the resolution of the pieces was a little higher though, made seeing the details a lot harder. Overall, a fine entry.

Volcano Rush! by jharler 2018-12-06T02:44:51Z

Pretty fun little platformer/runner! Had the right amount of challenge despite being such a straightforward idea. For some reason the graphics and gameplay gave me an old school Crash Bandicoot vibe. Ending was particularly funny! Good work.

Well-Hidden Genie by AidanMarkham 2018-12-07T02:31:00Z

Lighthearted fun! Just clicking the mouse to flap his mighty graspers was enjoyable. Clever writing too, tied in well with the puzzle of figuring out what to bring. Had a good laugh when I saw that the chickens and sheep had the same face as the guy. Great work!

Serve The Gods by BluShine 2018-12-05T17:40:05Z

Awesome game, guys! I was actually laughing out loud at the procedurally generated Yelp reviews: "Try the tomato! Excellent location and owner." I did run into a bad bug however, where you are unable to pick any objects up after restarting following a game-over from not pleasing the gods, so I had to restart the entire game. Overall I think you guys did a great job layering the gameplay with cooking, making recipes, and maintaining the appeasement of the food lords!

Cute Army Conquest by MestreRothLD 2018-12-06T03:49:17Z

Those poor cute birds :anguished:

Simplistic but fun concept with really polished art and sound! Got an angry birds sort of vibe from it. If you ended up adding some more stages and unit types, I would definitely enjoy playing this on mobile to kill time. Great work!

Quest For Gory by Erasmus Crowley 2018-12-05T19:29:55Z

Short and simple. Wasn't too sold on the theme, just felt a little underwhelming overall. I definitely feel like it could've used some kind of subtle highlight or shine for items that could be interacted with, such as with the dynamite, which took me several minutes to find. Maybe could've done with a slightly better camera angle as well, shifted more upwards perhaps. In general not a bad entry.

STAR JUNK by christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2018-12-05T18:03:59Z

Fantastic game! The art is adorable, music is fun to listen to, and the gameplay is engaging. Looks and feels like something that would've been on the SNES or GBA! If there was anything I could say in terms of constructive criticism, I guess it's that the dogfights feel lacking. I wish there was a way to lock-on to enemies or strafe your ship side to side to dodge attacks while still being able to shoot in their direction. Overall a great idea and art style.

Demon Arena by angelnm 2018-12-06T02:37:16Z

Neat little arcade style game. It was funny seeing so many of the priests get stacked up behind me the farther I went along. While it was fun and wasn't overly difficult, I do wish that there were just a little more going on. Maybe one other powerup or being able to shoot faster. Overall, I really liked it! Good work.

MARATAKA by Vodzik 2018-12-06T03:01:39Z

I thought this was a pretty fun entry overall. Although I agree with @mekuri about the path up the volcano being a bit unclear, could have been made easier to see with some torches at the base or something similar. The graphics and sounds were definitely my favorite, and added to the humor aspect of appeasing a cranky god, one who apparently doesn't like bananas.

Rift Plugger by Mikeliosus 2018-12-07T02:57:51Z

Loved it! Art style reminded me a lot of something from Tim Burton, like Nightmare Before Christmas. The music and sound matched worked perfectly with the dreadful setting you guys went with. The little main character was also fun to play as!

I would definitely like to see some more of the world expanded on, as it looks so interesting. If you threw in some plot or more story-driven gameplay it would be awesome, if you end up working on the project more later. Great work!

Power Down by tayl1r 2018-12-05T17:04:45Z

Spent about an hour playing it. Was really fun and challenging, especially towards the end! Like some others have said, I do wish the FOV had been slightly wider. The mouse speed was a little hectic also, made aiming harder than it needed to be. But overall I love the aesthetic and concept - great work!

Soul Keeper by michal 2018-12-06T03:18:57Z

Haven't seen an idea used like this before in a game, really unique! It got tricky in some parts, like the areas where you had to "ditch" the vessel in order to get a soul or clear a gap, then retake another vessel before you got dragged down. Sound effects and music were fitting as well, felt like an old gameboy game. Would love to see level 3 be more challenging if you manage to finish it!

Abbey Massacre by Sempiternal 2018-12-05T18:36:26Z

A bit longer than I initially imagined, but I definitely liked the mood and aesthetics. It was a good idea implementing the target highlighting feature, as sometimes I became incredibly lost in the level and wasn't sure where to go or what to do.

My biggest complaint would be that there desperately needed a way to move faster, like a run button or something. This was especially annoying after getting caught and having to start back at the beginning only to slowly walk around to do everything again.

I feel like what could've worked really well here was a radar system with enemy FOVs (similar to metal gear solid), since sometimes you are caught by a passerby from miles away with no way of avoiding it. Overall, great little game with fitting music and nice graphics!

AkimBear by ecmjohnson 2018-12-07T02:16:46Z

Why do the cute forest critters want to kill Mr. Grizzle so bad?! :bear:

This has a lot of personality for such a small game. Using a controller felt perfect, because I tried playing with a keyboard and boy was it bad. Sometimes the ground enemies were a bit hard to see, and it chugged a little when a lot of bullets were flying. But aside from that, the concept, art style, and the sound/music blew me away. Great submission!

Rainbow Cats by Niarkou 2018-12-07T01:36:09Z

Those poor kittens :anguished:

Seriously though, great little game. Calls back to the classic puzzle games of the Atari and NES. Felt polished and was fairly challenging, but enough so to still feel engaging. My only complaint would be that the music got a little grating. An option to toggle it on or off would have been convenient. Overall, excellent entry!

Pyme's Genocide by HermesEs 2018-12-05T22:37:13Z

Awesome entry for a 72 hour jam! Like other people have mentioned, the art style and graphics are cute, stylized, and just nice to look at. I love the concept overall.

My biggest complaint is that the platforming in general is pretty clunky. Jumps are jittery, getting to higher places can be incredibly difficult, and some of the spring-boards will bounce you in a misleading direction. I found myself falling off the world often because the jetpack mechanic seems to have varying levels of push-up, making it hard to tell if you have enough fuel to cross a gap.

Something else fairly frustrating was the lack of instructions. I had to guess that shooting the green crystals would remove the shields, and some of the crystals were too hard to reach. Destroying the crystals was also overly difficult because there is no real way to aim the suck-cannon to shoot creatures out. They seem to shoot out in random directions.

I feel like with enough polish, this is something that could look and feel great to play on a console, like the Switch. Overall, excellent work.

Captain Cottontail: Certified Rocket Jumper by tomonaku 2018-12-05T20:10:33Z

Mechanics and art style were A+, but the theme in general was a bit light. My biggest complaint was that there was **no mouse lock**, which made most of the precise aiming for the rocket jumps extremely frustrating. Overall, I thought it was a fine entry!

Amulet of Qayin by Maytch 2018-12-06T04:02:29Z

Nice little game, reminded me a lot of oldschool LoZ, especially the puzzle aspect.

Some things I wasn't a big fan of were the attack range, as sometimes it felt like the minotaur still managed to get a hit on me even as I swung. The choice of keys to use for controls were a little strange, such as Z and Y to sacrifice, X to attack, etc. I encountered an issue every so often where I would reenter a room and get stuck inside the minotaur and take damage until I died.

Overall I really liked the aesthetic and mood of the game. With some more polish you could easily expand on the concept and make a full experience!

Sacrafices_LD43 by LukeL 2018-12-05T17:28:06Z

I like the concept. Definitely could've used more polish, but understandable under the strict deadline and you working alone. Wish the stage was a little bit bigger and there was more of a challenge in knocking out the cult members, something like making them struggle as you are carrying them or having them knocked out not as long might've been neat. The camera also kind of glitched around a lot while carrying the bodies. The music fits the atmosphere well! Overall, not a bad game.

Running Wild by Jannick Larsen 2018-12-07T01:50:46Z

Cool concept I'm surprised I don't see more of. The whole idea of "safety in numbers", where everyone else is cannon fodder for you to use as a shield, works really well with the jam theme. I thought the controls felt good, and it wasn't awkward maneuvering a big mass of dudes. Music choice could've probably been more fitting, techno/electronic didn't feel right with the prison setting. I ran into a small bug with the wall smashers, where even while they were closed they would still kill my dudes if they touched them. Other than that, really solid entry!

Out Of Power by Mathis BRESSAUD 2018-12-05T19:14:24Z

This game was excellent! Felt like a true classic right from the start, like something I'd find in a late 80s arcade. One thing I didn't realized until after the fact though, was that you can right away choose to sacrifice ALL of your abilities the first time around. I did this like a dummy and had to play stages 2-8 with everything sacrificed! Might've been better to only allow the player to choose up to one thing to sacrificed per level.

Even still though, the gameplay was balanced enough that it didn't feel impossible and I really enjoyed playing it. Great design, art, and audio!

Ranch of the Gods by Vodish 2018-12-07T01:59:38Z

Solid entry. Felt just a little cut-and-dry as far as the whole theme goes, but the sound and simple polygon art style gave it some charm that I appreciate. The decision to swap out the god's animal requests was a nice touch that made it more challenging and varied. Great job overall!

Death Metal Crowd Pusher by WizardOfOzzy 2018-12-16T01:57:04Z

@Keksa - that is a very interesting idea! Would involve a bit more strategy if there was a type of dude you weren't supposed to throw in the pit, forcing you to stage-dive around them. Thanks for the feedback!

King's Last Stand by Pukami 2018-12-07T01:16:02Z

I thought the gameplay was fun and balanced quite well. I liked the cute and simplistic art style. Good entry!

Grauby Grauby by Danilo Freire 2018-12-05T19:40:31Z

Really liked this submission! The gameplay felt fresh and unique, with only being able to manipulate the slime by flinging it around. Graphics and audio also reminded me of an old PlayStation game, which is awesome.

My only complaint is that the use of theme was a little light, but the overall aesthetic makes up for it. Could've also benefited from a pause or menu option.

Finally, I encountered a bug where after you die, you might respawn without being able to fling the slime anymore, so the game had to be restarted. Overall, great work!

Rabbit/Wolf by Shweep 2018-12-05T20:52:07Z

The mood, the MOOD in this game! It's so dreary and solemn, combining perfectly with the retro gameboy-like graphics, sound effects, and music.

I loved the mix of RPG style elements with a short combat segment between each day. Having to choose between gaining a new ability or restoring health was a fun gamble (sometimes you have to spare the right people), and reading the unique dialogue between characters really managed to build a believable and unsettling world. I would definitely want to see a full game in this setting.

Difficulty ramped up towards the last day and became incredibly challenging (in an excellent way), although during the 4th day combat segment, I sat through on an empty screen for 20 seconds, thought maybe that was a bug?

Overall, FANTASTIC entry. Five stars from me.

Trial of a Warrior by Nairi 2018-12-05T17:18:15Z

Neat little game. I like the idea of having to give up one of your abilities at different points along your path. The boss fight was actually pretty challenging, had to time the shield right! Could've used a simple victory screen after defeating the boss though. Overall I thought it was enjoyable.

Baby Grenade by publicidadeba 2018-12-05T21:28:28Z

Cool little arcade sort of game with a bit of humor.

I liked throwing the babs to get the girls off you, but i felt like they were much too fast overall and the baby grenades took too long to respawn after picking them up. Would've been useful to be able to accumulate a stockpile of them ahead of time.

The stage design also left a lot to be desired, needed some obstacles, ramps, or pits to have the enemies fall into to give you more time. Overall, a decent entry!

LD45 — Start with nothing

Sosig by Mors 2019-10-08T03:29:26Z

This is so amazing! Loved everything about it, from the look and feel, to the controls, to the expansive length of gameplay. Honestly wasn't expecting anything more past the first level. I managed to complete the game with relative difficulty after about 10 minutes using a controller. Loved the little hidden sheep tokens for extra points! I guess all I would say is the tie-in with the theme was just a bit lax, but in the end I liked the idea of a plain ol' hotdog on a quest for all the toppings, so I think it worked out. Excellent submission, though. Really hit that sweet nostalgic mid-90s platforming spot.
