LD39 — Running out of Power

POWER by xk_the_name 2017-08-18T19:20:46Z

When I first started this game I thought "Oh great, another dwindling power space shooter," But you did something totally different from all the other entries. There's almost a complete game, full of polish here! Massive props for doing as much as you did. While you're idea isn't entirely new, the execution is amazing and all the power ups and abilities really add something unique to the whole experience.

Just a few things I noticed: 1. What does radar do? I feel like it just highlighted power, which is helpful, but I also feel like it would have been better if it also showed power pickups that were hidden by asteroids or ships.

2. The level progression is all over the place. Some levels early on were brutal, while others were a breeze later on. Maybe I stumbled upon the solution early for a few of these.

3. Having the ability to re-choose your upgrade after dying would be helpful so that you could properly spec for the upcoming level.

There's a lot you could do with this and I'd love to see a full release! Great work!

Railroad Trucker by ZYXer 2017-08-18T19:40:16Z

Major props for making the most chill game of the jam! A little derivative, but I'm pretty impressed that you got this done in the short amount of time there was. Great stuff!

Survival Adventures by tomdeal 2017-08-18T19:01:35Z

This was a great, funny little game! One minor suggestion I'd make is to allow the player to eat berries without having to put them into their inventory first. It's kind of redundant and they basically serve as quick little pit stops for the players energy.

I'd love to see an improved upon version with bears, predators and a multi day survival loop. And Mr. Brills hamming it up for the camera :P

Great work!

How I Met Your Great Great Grandmother by PeachTreeOath 2017-08-09T22:39:41Z

This is a great entry! You could have easily made a very punitive puzzle game in which there was one solution, but you managed to make the level open enough to allow the player to solve it their own way. A fun little mechanic that I would love to see expanded upon in a full release. Great work!

Sabotage by image_31 2017-08-15T05:00:39Z

This was a pretty rad little game. I don't quite know what breaking the generator and the other thing did, but I love the concept and enjoyed my time with the game. Dig your art style as well! Great entry!

POWER BEAT RACER by Hels 2017-08-03T01:51:31Z

A very simple and intuitive game. Button responsiveness seems a bit off (could just be me though) and I found it difficult that there wasn't an onscreen prompt reminding me what colors were associated with which buttons. The graphics and audio have a suitably 8-bit theme and I could totally see myself playing this on the Game Boy back in the day!

Powershuttle by GameWolves 2017-08-15T02:17:30Z

This was a fun little game and it's good to see something made outside of Unity/HTML in the jam! I think you have good starting place to improve upon for a future release. Maybe some player progression/other abilities you can use besides moving at one constant speed would add some depth to the gameplay.

The control scheme was a little awkward. Having to press w and down on the mouse key to move forward seemed redundant.

The graphics and music were excellent!

Spacious Righteous Starship by Alexandre Blondin Massé 2017-08-03T01:41:34Z

Unfortunately I wasn't able to launch your game. Also, I would highly advice against posting .bat files as it will set off alarm bells for anyone with antivirus software installed.

Rats will kiss the gunner's daughter by Mr.Houdini 2017-08-09T18:57:31Z

Found the font to be hard on the eyes, and it would have been nice for the "note taking" aspect of the game to be actually integrated into the game itself, but you can only do so much during in such a short time. Overall I really admired what you guys were able to do. Great entry!

daemon by bombjack 2017-08-09T22:32:10Z

Interesting concept. I think if you expanded on it, it become a very fun game. Right now I see several flaws. There's no indication of damage taken and the window of invulnerability after damage taken is too short, so I found myself being damaged multiple times by one thing in a single action. The level design is so confined that you don't give the player much freedom to find creative ways to traverse, so generally there is only one optimum route to go through it. Managing your soul count is interesting, but it could be greatly expanded upon. Right now it just seems like an extended time period after you die. If you had a boosted speed mechanics for when you are low, or anything else to make this state of the game more interesting.

Also I found the wall jumping to work half the time. It seems like the window of checking if you are jumping off a wall is too small.

Overall I think this is a good entry for the jam and I would love to see a more expanded version of this mechanic.

Light Switch Crusader by TedScottPilgrim 2017-08-03T01:21:50Z

Really dug the concept and I got a kick out of playing as a creeper whose justification is saving energy. The audio effects you chose were pretty great as well! I thought the level design was clever for the small space you had available and it naturally directed the player to different parts of the map.

I did notice that sneaking didn't have much of an affect on the roaming cat? I suppose it might be a distance based check though, because I was able to walk past it at full speed. Also there is some serious performance hitch whenever there is an overlap event that triggers an end game sequence (calling the event every frame? Unloaded assets being synchronously loaded?).

Overall I dug the concept, but I would have liked it better if disarming the lights fed back into your ability to traverse the level as opposed to a light scavenger hunt.

Great work!

The Dying of the Light by Winterslice 2017-08-02T00:49:38Z

Thanks for the feedback folks! I fixed some of the bugs you mentioned for a new release that should be up soon.

The Dying of the Light by Winterslice 2017-08-13T01:32:07Z

Thanks a lot for the kind words Shess. It means a lot to us that you enjoyed our game so much! Subtitles is definitely something we'll consider for a future update. :D

Skelly Zone by mattmirrorfish 2017-08-18T19:29:23Z

This was a fun little tower defense game. I was a little confused on what each thing did and ended up just falling back on using the turrets.

Only problem I had was a huge fps hit whenever I looked back towards the base area (I was playing through the browser).

Love the art style and the simple little sounds. Great entry!

Zzap by HS_Dave 2017-08-15T02:25:49Z

This was a fun little game with some killer production! Reminded me a lot of some old PS1/2 games back in the day. The only thing I found was that some level setups made it ridiculously easy to complete. But props for your first LD jam and props for making a pretty robust random level generator!

Puppies in Sea Trouble by anttiviljami 2017-08-03T01:45:52Z

A very clever concept that could be greatly expanded into an impressive clicker type game. Would love to see an updated and more fully fleshed out version of this.

GRID by Altra 2017-08-03T01:38:05Z

Can confirm what Viaj02 said. It's a shame that your game is unplayable. It looks like you put a lot of work into making a competent Sim game.

Play Not With Food They Said by axoona 2018-08-26T22:58:56Z

Very zen, weird game. With a little more structure and obstacles for the player it could make for a pretty great game.

Parkour by Mastersmith98 2018-08-26T21:28:55Z

hey @glock00 and @pnghasemi thanks for letting us know about this. I'll try to get a fixed build up right now.

Parkour by Mastersmith98 2018-08-26T22:45:59Z

Okay new upload should be good. Please let me know if it breaks again.

Parkour by Mastersmith98 2018-08-27T20:16:09Z

There's something going on with the git upload that's wrecking it. Gonna check it out tonight. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for giving it a try again @glock00

Parkour by Mastersmith98 2018-08-28T03:38:17Z

Alright, used the link from the github repository instead of directly from my website url. It might be related to a browser caching issue, but I was able to download it on another computer successfully from that link.

Space Rabbit by gogu 2018-08-26T23:09:58Z

Really enjoyed the first two levels and was looking forward to playing some more.

Giving the player a little more air control when they use the jet-pack (say thrust for a second in the direction of the mouse) would help make the control less punitive.

Would definitely love to see this expanded upon into a bigger game!

Guardian Of The Tengri Mountain by akemala 2018-08-26T23:04:49Z

Great art style. It created an interesting enough of a mood that I mentally started filling in the sounds.

Didn't quite understand the gist of the game though. The main obstacle, losing space to the black diamonds, doesn't seem to be something the player can overcome, but something that artificially ends the game.

Would love to see this idea expanded upon. Possibly with the ability to clear spaces of black diamonds with two mana?

A D Roll'Space by Raktou 2018-08-26T22:32:15Z

Congrats on your first entry!

The Amazing Shrinking Game by svenardocom 2018-08-26T23:14:18Z

Great job on pivoting on the project. Really enjoyed the final concept, but found how sensitive the movement is to be a little off putting, especially when I was trying to squeeze into the space as best I could at the end.

This would make for a great full game on mobile. Great entry!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Just Bill by gamedevbynight 2018-04-29T19:39:15Z

A great entry that's a lot of fun to play. With a little more polish I could see this being fully released game. The order of levels seems counter to the actual complexity of the mechanics you introduce, at times, but overall I thought you introduced mechanics in a steady enough stream to keep things interesting.

Great design. Looking forward to your next jam entry :D

Apostle: Vanguard by Shess 2018-04-29T18:55:36Z

Hey guys. Interesting conceit for a game, but I couldn't figure out how to do anything unfortunately. Your art was incredible and it looks like you guys put a lot of effort into getting this out. Would love to see a further expanded version.

Great to see that you're still working on stuff @Shess.

Nerd's Revenge: Punches delivered with math by Bartosz 2018-04-29T19:15:10Z

Really dug the conceit of the game, but the difficulty really turned me off from entirely enjoying it. It's a bit unfair that the math meter doesn't refill after solving a problem. Also the meter moves extremely quickly. I found myself fumbling with the keys a lot. But overall a fun entry! Loved your art style :D

Space Captain Rodriguez by CalebLewis 2018-04-29T19:24:32Z

Really dug this entry. The genre match up is excellent. I'm a huge fan of Galaga and felt like you guys nailed the basic mechanics of that. The progression felt smooth and challenging enough to keep me engaged for a few.

For some reason I couldn't scroll through menus, which was a bummer because I kept saying yes to "Should I text and drive?" Some SFX would have really set this game higher for me. I can just hear the different hit responses in my head.

Overall good entry. I would love to see a more polished version!

Cyclevania by Allen Oliver 2018-04-29T19:54:13Z

You guys nailed the theme with combining these two genres. I would have appreciated a bit more variety in gameplay, but you manage to keep the level interesting for a few.

I did find a few bugs though. When moving up, you could clip through the ceilings, which can cause you to hit spike traps above. Also you can continue to collect coins after you've died.

Great job on the initial idea, would like to see some more polish and greater expansion of the design.

RoadRover by Bisher.d790 2018-04-29T20:04:37Z

A fun little entry, but my play experience was hampered by a couple of things.

As others have mentioned, the depth of field effect is pretty intense. It made me kind of sick whenever I picked up some speed.

Vehicle handling still seems a little off. The extreme shift in control when on dirt vs rock doesn't feel right.

I encountered a bug where if there was any kind of mouse motion when I died, this would continue onto the restarted game, causing my aim to constantly point down.

There's also major slow downs whenever there are more than a handful of enemies spawned.

Good work though. For a one man team you accomplished a lot in the given time!

Type n' Jump by Richard N Silva 2018-04-29T19:46:11Z

This is a fun little game you made. Good level design that ramps up the challenge and allows the player to explore some of the commands before more challenging areas. I would have preferred having longer platforms to run across with the camera leading in the direction the character was moving (so that I could have more time to respond to upcoming obstacles).

I could totally see this being played by a room full of enthusiastic fifth graders. It brought me back to the educational games I used to play.

A little on the challenging side, but I enjoyed the time I spent with it.
