LD38 — A Small World

The Grass is Always Greener by intxparts 2017-05-01T04:56:02Z

Short and sweet! An interesting take on the theme of this Ludum Dare, and one I would not have expected to see. It is imaginative and in impressive when realizing it was made with pygame. Though I feel this game could have benefited from a little more substance. I know the short amount of time likely had something to do with that, but I still feel as though I was just getting started when the game just shut down. I would have loved to play more!

Hair Protector by NoroMoon 2017-05-01T05:15:44Z

This idea is tremendous. What on earth gave you the idea to make a strand of hair protecting a man's head from dandruff into a game? The innovation on display here is commendable and thank you for giving me a good laugh! The difficulty here however is absurd. Some of the flakes seem impossible to reach and others are impossible to get to in time. I'm going to keep trying to see if there is a strategy, but for now it seems to just be too much at once. However, I am going back and playing more, which still is still a good sign for your game... You have me there.

Super Galaxy Cosmo by jcoan188 2017-05-01T05:35:52Z

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" would be an accurate representation of my mind while playing this game. Geez, the lights, the enemies, the bullets, oh my. Flashy and fantastical. I love the smooth quick gameplay. I could see myself playing this game for a good long while without even realizing it. The game adds different enemies as time goes on and that feels like a logical progression. I wouldn't slow down this game at all. I would, however, put a little more innovation into it. Something that makes it stand out a tad from games like it. Regardless, that is a minor gripe and I am nitpicking. I have to find some criticism! Anyway, I'm going to play a bit more now...

rovR by morrilet 2017-05-01T05:07:29Z

I thought this would be much different. Then when I started the game, the term "what the hell" immediately popped in my head. Not sure why or anything. Maybe the floating space infants? Interesting concept. The gameplay was a ton of fun yet really challenging what with the heads of the space babies. Ah, space babies. What a wonderful term. Good job, you managed to make a fun game and freak me out.

This is the End: Small World by namrog84 2017-05-01T05:26:48Z

"You died or either you escaped." Thank you?

Interesting civ-style game. I liked how the mechanics worked, despite the fact that I was still a little unclear on them. It was fun learning as I played the game, which is something you don't have often any more. I enjoyed all the "homemade" sounds in the game. Once I know I was producing enough, I just skipped turns until I had 750. I could have played much more of this game. It was enjoyable.

The Final Earth by Florian van Strien 2017-05-01T15:22:06Z

There is a strong message of sustainability here somewhere... Great game. The strategy here is well thought out and executed very well. There is even a tutorial to get started which makes the game completely understandable. My favourite so far.

herbarium by t-mw 2017-05-01T15:04:29Z

The water physics is what makes this game different and more of a thinker than it seems, despite the water being quite wonky and unpredictable at times. I like the way this game has clear progression and even has a level introduction screen! Part of me wishes my garden was this complicated.

LD46 — Keep it alive

The Dumb Kid's Job by Yvanor 2020-04-21T20:30:33Z

A well done game with the 48 hours given! Shooting was a little tricky to pick up, but I got it quick enough. It adds a lot that time was taken to craft the dialogue, which is the strongest part of this game.

Ninja and Mouse by TrampolineTales 2020-04-26T01:40:32Z

The graphics are a little fuzzy, but I think it is supposed to be played on a smaller scale if I'm correct!

I am a fan of the oldie feel of this game! I played til the end not because I felt I had to, but because I wanted to. The shop was a nice touch and really streamlined things. I did find that you didn't really have to purchase any of the upgrades to get to 100 as the only upgrades that make the most difference are the combo ones.

The game was cute and really captured my interest though. I will have to look into Pico-8! I haven't really had any experience with it, but I'm finding I enjoy a lot of the games that come from it.

Prototype Towers by marbles 2020-04-26T00:14:33Z

I'm not usually a fan of tower defense games at all.

But I really enjoyed the "do your own fixing" mechanic! It really feels like I have way more control over the game and how things go. It feels good with the enemies progressively changing as well!

It does get difficult as the game progresses, but it was manageable for quite a while. I loved that there was more to the game than first expected. Good game!

Down to Earth by ruthiepee 2020-04-26T05:26:15Z

I love the way this game looks! The pleasantly drawn aesthetic is the best part of this game. It looks great!

The angle of the gun doesn't match where it is shooting which threw me off multiple times. I was also able to cheese the game by holding the mouse button and running straight.

The game itself is a fun defense game with a lot of charm! Good game!

104 BPM by codyhansen 2020-04-24T06:42:47Z

@yvanor I've always found the idea of thinking of songs like "Stayin' Alive" while trying to give CPR a little darkly humorous! Thank you for your review!

@bigtinygames Speaking of Stayin' Alive! That song may be where I got the 104 BPM idea! Thank you for your review!

@noahro The amount of times I had to test this game is the only reason I can play it on normal even... The feedback on the missed beats is something that's been coming up a lot! Completely missed it. Great idea! Thank you!

@nekoruma Thank you for playing! And the kind words!

@kiguel182 Thank you! I was concerned about the impressions of the game at first, so this means a lot!

@solweak I didn't know if anyone would read those! So, thank you; I'm glad you had fun!

@dmtroy The missed beats response was a missed beat itself! Thank you for the suggestion! You are quite right. I'm glad you enjoyed playing it! And for your very kind words!

@jakemchugh1 Awh, shucks. You flatter me! Just between you and me, I can barely hit a thing on hard difficulty. We both need to up our typing!

104 BPM by codyhansen 2020-04-26T06:04:12Z

@sorko I meant for the notes to be the result of the compressions and not the result of the inputs. I didn't make that very clear though! Thank you for the feedback!

@marbles Yeah, that seems to be the most common feedback! I will keep it in mind for if I ever polish the game. Thank you!

@hillelgo That's a good point! During the jam, I often don't find the time to have someone outside the jam playtest it during production. I'm going to make note to do that for next time! It could help with issues I don't notice like this. Thank you for pointing it out!

@trampolinetales Perhaps... :wink:

@ruthiepee Yeah! The key mapping issue I didn't even notice beforehand. I plan on incorporating more playtesting in the future to avoid such issues! Thank you for your kind words though!

@sleepystudios Thank you! Perhaps I'll polish it up a bit in the future!

104 BPM by codyhansen 2020-05-12T16:05:42Z

@fabrizio-spadaro You know, I actually did consider it! This whole thing was based on that idea alone and I really wanted to just... slip that song in there. Thank you for the kind words!

@andidebob In post-mortem I'm getting a lot about the feedback and those dreaded right side inputs! I realize they really should be flipped. Thank you for your review!

@fernando-tonon-de-rossi

CPR.jpg

@kaisean-games Yeah, I didn't start on the music until night 2 when I suddenly realized I had no idea how to make music. Should have started with that for a rhythm game huh? Haha! Hindsight is 20/20. Also, I knew that about keyboards and it completely slipped my mind until you mentioned it just now. That is a very good point and something I did not think of. Thank you!

@rrrzzz I meant for this game to be slightly accurate to actual CPR. I toyed with the idea of BPM increasing, but as that kind of goes against CPR I opted to leave it out. However, the fail state idea was something I just skipped over. It makes sense too! Someone's life IS on the line after all! I'm considering tuning this game up a bit. Your comment has definitely helped with that! Thank you!

@dragonayzer One pump is better than none! WSX-MKO? I never thought of having keybindings match the layout in game... That's kind of neat! I like that. Thank you!

Flour Baby by kiguel182 2020-04-24T06:52:04Z

I really enjoyed this game. There were a lot of subtle things that felt polished that made the game feel nice to play. The ease in and out of collisions and movement made input responses feel butter-y smooth!

Something about the walk cycle too. Don't know why. This game was cutely charming!

I'm pretty sure it's been brought up, but even using the gym hide-behind-kids-like-a-coward cheese didn't save me my first play through!

Great job on this friendly bullet hell from parenting class!

I am the mason, i didn't get payment for 3 days, i'm hungry by 55_maximus_55 2020-05-12T15:41:11Z

This was an interesting game! I loved the idea and the lighting effect was surprisingly very well done. I did find myself a little confused at first and the bare-bones feel of the game was a little jarring. I was never sure if I was doing anything or not. I was confused when I won and suddenly the game closed. I didn't even know I had won til I replayed and the same thing happened. The concept for "keep it alive" was neat though! When I first launched this game, coupled with the idea, it feels like a game that, if fully complete, I would actually buy! I had fun while it lasted though!

Night Keeper by SleepyStudios 2020-04-26T05:42:25Z

I loved all the subtle movements of the camera. The view of the game was extremely smooth and professional. The design of the creates especially were extremely well done.

I had a hard time finding any wood, but maybe that's just me. After the fire went out, I was able to stay alive only shooting at the eyes I could see in the darkness. I was alive longer after the fire went out than before.

All in all, I love the atmosphere this game creates. Well done!

Ihctogamat by OhFiddleDiddle 2020-04-26T06:44:28Z

Why can't I click the e-mail about hot singles in my area?

I like the added touch of the videos and you can tell the work you put in to it. It was silly in a fun way! Certainly one of the more unique games I've played this LDJam!

The Hum by NoahRo 2020-04-21T21:58:47Z

This style of game tends to be a favourite of mine, so perhaps I'm a bit bias, but I really loved the way this game looked, sounded, and felt. You can tell a lot of thought was put in to the way the character moved at specific times (holding a lot of wood, after a trap, etc). The audio as well! A lot of focus seemed to be on creating an atmosphere for this game that really, really paid off.

Keeping a source of light active is a typical horror trope that fits this theme very well.

The game does feel repetitive after a bit as, at least from what I saw. Nothing changes as time goes on, no ramp up in sounds or any urgency when the fire gets very low or dies.

But that's only a small thing! I had a good time playing this! Plus one of the bat clips sounds like the one from the Scooby Doo intro, so bonus points.

Baby Dragon by dmtroy 2020-04-24T07:13:33Z

Oh my this game was cute. I loved everything about the way things moved and interacted. This is the kind of game you could merchandise.

The flying can be a little confusing, as the game feels like there isn't any progression, but once I started getting the "Tamagatchi-esque" aspect, the idea made a lot more sense to me. And also when the dragon sat at the table with it's mouth open, this game lost all ability to do anything wrong.

Wonderful!

Ice Ice Baby by Fabrizio Spadaro 2020-04-27T05:14:58Z

I like the idea that you're just sliding the ice cube instead of actually controlling it. It's an innovative turn to make more than just traditional enemies the threat of the level. Fun game!

Flora is chilling by TheShamo 2020-04-22T01:26:17Z

Congrats on your second Ludum Dare!

The game suffers from the graphical issues at times and the balancing makes things a little difficult to know what best to do.

I'm a fan of strategic clickers though! It's got some charm! Good use of the theme.

The Reef by jakemchugh1 2020-04-24T07:25:04Z

That math is enough to make my brain scream. I'm really glad I got to read through exactly what is going on behind the scenes of this game as it makes the game all that more beautiful.

Out of curiosity, I left the game running without touching any of the bars and the ecosystem thrived for about 5 minutes before I started toying with the bars. I don't know if that is an issue or I'm just very lucky.

The game is extremely relaxing and an excellent take on the theme. So innovative! The concept and science is beyond my intelligence, but even it the most base level the game is just calming and serene.

A Very Fishy Game by Hillelgo 2020-04-26T01:04:27Z

I love the way this game looks! Has a very "picture book" style that I enjoy. The game is simple, but keeps you on your toes between the two objectives.

There isn't too much to do however. It comes down to clicking on which of the two needs attention first and praying they don't need it at the same time. The sound that the fish deterrent and food sometimes piles on top of each other and creates a lingering buzzing.

The game looks fantastic though. And the writing got a chuckle out of me!

Programmers GF by HubaBibi 2020-04-24T06:04:16Z

Congratulations on your first game jam project!

I had a bit of trouble with the shooting at first, but it felt smooth and handlable!

This game would benefit from a few things however! The inclusion of audio and a proper ending screen would give a more well-rounded game feel.

Good luck on your first LDJam!

Cable Guy by sorko 2020-04-25T23:55:39Z

I was concerned at first that it may feel like other platformers, but I was impressed by how wrong I was! There is a polish to this game that makes it feel a cut above. I felt challenged by each level while never feeling completely frustrated to the point of quitting. Plus dragging the cord behind me added a sense of fun to the situation.

Great game!

Fencing Meka by Solweak 2020-04-24T07:02:05Z

You did all this in 48 hours? I'm very impressed. This game had everything, excellent audio, graphics (look at that background!), and even a story!

This felt like a cutout of a fully polished, much larger game. You captured a great game experience in such a short time. Best I've played so far!

Keep the Party Alive by Jirushi 2020-04-24T07:44:02Z

I love how the audio changes depending on your distance and the ending was a nice surprise!

I found the sticks only appearing in the one direction made the game feel repetitive. There was little to the game, but I still enjoyed my time playing it!

Breeze by LieutenantMaster 2020-04-21T20:52:39Z

Congratulations on your first game jam! The snowflake growing while rolling in the snow was a really nice touch.

I disappeared when I started level two, though. The game was still playable, but the snowflake wasn't visible at all. Unfortunately it meant I couldn't play much further than that, but I enjoyed what I did play!

A little bit of audio would go a long way in this game. Even blips or bloops when jumping or rolling. That's not a big gripe though!

I can assure you, my first "real" game looked nothing like this. You're doing great for a first time and I wish you the best of luck!

Keep Adventurer alive by bigTINYGames 2020-04-22T00:08:50Z

I could see myself wasting a lot of time playing this on mobile!

The game is simple, but a surprising amount of fun! The procedural gameplay makes each playthrough a little more new and less monotonous than it easily could have been.

I lost once by dropping a boulder and blocking my own path, which made me enjoy this game a little more. I lost because I stopped paying attention, and immediately was pulled back in and shown the importance of attentiveness in the game. Well done.

The tapping for each obstacle lends itself well to the idea of mobile and I really hope you pursue it!

Evolve by Ecrush11989 2020-05-12T15:49:50Z

Congrats on your first Ludum Dare! I can tell a lot of thought was put into this game. I know that doesn't sound like much, but planning and idea is the biggest part of any game creation and I can really tell that you had a clear idea in mind.

I'm going to sound like a broken record, as the other comments have already mentioned it, but I was very confused on what exactly I was to do. I couldn't figure out how to get points back once I had used them and I was able top use over my allotted amount of points, even though it would just kill me the next round. I believe with a few other design checks in place, you have a good sim on your hands!

BUBBLE BOY by NEKORUMA 2020-04-22T00:19:07Z

There is something I love very much about how this game looks and sounds. I can practically picture holding it and playing it. I adored these kinds of things as a kid and you've captured it perfectly.

The gameplay itself is just clicking a button when the corresponding bar gets smaller, just with a nice coat of paint. But in that same thought, if Tamagotchi were made in 48 hours, I'm sure it would be very much the same. I don't know if they could have done this will with the restrictions you had.

This was a joy to play.

Keep Me Alive by rrrzzz 2020-04-21T23:43:09Z

You made me work to play this. I just want you to know that.

I opened the game, but due to a pop up, missed the opening text. When all there was was a blinking dot with no input reaction, I closed the game and restarted. On restart, there was nothing.

I downloaded the source code and opened it in Unity to even see what I was supposed to have seen. Even looked through the code to see what the heck was going on.

It's an extremely innovative and unique take on the theme. Like a one touch Tamagotchi.

It is very plain and there isn't much going on with it at all. It lacks any substance, but that is what it is meant to be.

The use of theme and idea I enjoy very much! And after having to work to see it, I'm glad I did.

Snowmans Defense by AnHourTillOver 2020-04-21T19:53:16Z

Fun little game! The crosshair doesn't snap to the mouse sometimes when the level starts so sometimes if I fire right away it doesn't shoot where I want it to. Happens when my mouse is close to the edge.

I like the idea of keeping something alive in a shooting game by intentionally missing! It's a simple but entertaining concept. Easy to pick up and play.
