Really hard to get past round 4 in my opinion, might just be user error haha, im not very good at those button sequences. Perhaps they could be 1 button shorter. Also i found myself re-launching the game after my last tower since there was no way to restart. Great game though, i enjoyed playing it.

likai 2020-04-21 06:27

solid game. I was a bit unsold on the mechanic until the later rounds - it got pretty crazy! The difficulty spike wasn't as gradual as I was hoping, but it was still really good. Maybe some tooltips to describe the towers more would've been nice - i didn't realize one of them was blowing up my other towers until it was too late! The last round was definitely worth saving money for, as I couldn't click between them fast enough.

Overall, great work!

dxk2294 2020-04-21 06:32

Is there a mac download? The description says there should be one, but I can't seem to find one on itchio :frowning2:

marbles 2020-04-21 08:47

@dxk2294 The one from Google Drive should work for Mac since it's a Unity build and changed the one in Itch to Web just a few minutes ago.

flamus 2020-04-21 08:48

Wow! this is one of my favorites so far! I love the idea of keyboard-hacking with the turrets(reminds me of helldivers). Great job, great entry!

fabighindaru 2020-04-21 08:48

Nice game but a little too hand in my opinion ^^

marbles 2020-04-21 08:51

@likai Thanks for your feedback! Yes, the 3rd tower is an area damage that also blows up your towers and it's meant to be used as a last resort or for strategic placement.

joleon 2020-04-21 08:55

Wow that was fun and super difficult  It's rare to find a good tower defense game come from a jam. I love the mechanic of fixing the towers, I don't believe I've ever seen something like that in a game before, so points for innovation. Music and sound effects fit well. And difficulty curve is good, and there's just enough content to have a good session. Good job!

marbles 2020-04-21 08:56

@blue-pin-studio How could I forget such a simple feature! I apologize for not having a pause and restart button. And thanks for your feedback. I made the button sequences long so that in the late game where you have many towers, there's a sense of rush and urgency but at the same time requiring focus. Perhaps if I expand the game I could make the sequences shorter for some of the basic towers.

andret0701 2020-04-21 08:57

The key puzzel mechanic was genius! There was a lot of small things that felt weird, but that mechanic made up for it. Cool idea!

ladislavodstrcil 2020-04-21 08:57

i really like deffender games... music is nice... i love the reloading towers system -good idea... nice game but little bit slow for me

singleshoe 2020-04-21 09:14

I found the game a bit boring at the beginning, but the last three rounds were brutal. I was constantly trying to repair the towers, placing new ones because the splash damage was destroying them and frantically making sure that the area was covered.

Nice game!

marbles 2020-04-22 03:05

@joleon Thanks! I was losing motivation towards the end but I said No, I need to have a variety of monsters and towers and up the difficulty. Glad you liked it

marbles 2020-04-22 03:07

@singleshoe Thanks! I'm so glad I upped the difficulty haha!

marbles 2020-04-22 03:09

@ladislavodstrcil Thanks for your feedback! Do you mean the pacing is slow? Break time too slow?

bmacintosh 2020-04-22 05:18

I like this innovation on a pretty stale genre. The button sequence interaction was well done and intuitive. The tower deploy UI could have used more polish, but that's a typical jam thing. I think the need to press the "deploy" button could be eliminated, perhaps by dragging the towers or double-clicking them instead. I don't know how I feel about the rocket towers being able to destroy other towers! I had to stop using them altogether because they would inevitably destroy everything, but they made me chuckle.

rohezal 2020-04-22 07:50

This is a nice turn on normal tower defense games, which I like in general. You have more to do, than you watching the towers.

Maybe add an easy mode: Towers don't get destroyed when they overheat, just cooling down and firing again by themselfs. And let them be repaired before they reached the critical temperature. So the game works better for lazy, slow folks ;).

joekinglake 2020-04-22 07:59

Great innovation on the tower defence genre. I think there's a few elements that add a little bit of excess stress to the game. I found my top level turret was killing my own turrets which meant that a lot of my earlier progress and victories of keeping my turrets alive was backtracked by some bad placement of my next turret. When i started to have a lot of towers i found that i was constantly typing on the arrow keys, it'd be interesting to see if there was a way to negate some of this clicks (like an idle game does with removing the need to click as often) later in the game? Overall great work and a nice take on the genre!

nova31 2020-04-22 08:23

Nice game, it's innovative, the graphics are good, the sounds are good but for the gameplay the last rounds especially the 10th is super difficult since prototype 3 towers can blow themselves if the enemy too near them or can even blow other prototype tower 3 if they shoot near one. Also the level 2 tower is useless since it does not a lot of damage and need to be repaired a lot.

purpledartfrog 2020-04-22 08:37

Fun fact: Did a tower defence thing my self  Well back on topic .... fun mechanic to introduce the malfunctions - I think they were perhaps a bit to often and a bit to "fixed"; I do really like the idea though. Nice and polished entry - everything seems to be working as intended.

Congrats on your entry :thumbsup_tone1:

:purple_heart: :dart: :frog:

arturnista 2020-04-22 10:32

Good tower defense with a great twist to the genre. A little too hard IMO, but that's not critical, just need a little balancing. Good job!

marbles 2020-04-22 12:57

@joekinglake I should have informed the player that the 3rd tower is an area attack that can also kill your towers. About the reduction of clicks, that's a great idea.

marbles 2020-04-23 03:27

@nova31 It looks useless because it has lesser shots before it overheats compared to tower 1 but it deals more damage than tower 1.

marbles 2020-04-23 03:29

@rohezal Thanks. And Yes, I've actually thought of that after some folks said it is difficult :)

marbles 2020-04-23 03:32

@bmacintosh Thanks. Tower 3 made me chuckle too haha. I agree that the deploy button should be removed altogether. It is specially important that you can deploy quickly during intense waves.

god-colo 2020-04-23 07:39

The first tower defence game I'm playing for the jam! I like the little twist with the arrows! Greato Jobu!

fis 2020-04-24 17:36

Just wow - great idea, but it is quite hard! The penalty of not succeeding should be a little bit lower, after losing the first tower (in wave.. 7 I guess) demoralized me that much that I lost every tower in a chain reaction XD well done!

nathant 2020-04-25 07:40

Really pulled me in! Thought I got it from the screenshot, but it gets way more complicated than I imagined. Loved the mechanical feel to inputting the commands. Tough, but rewarding. I made it to wave 8 on my second attempt. Good jam!

delph 2020-04-25 07:41

Really like the music! The strategy changes from towers breaking and needing to be repaired in time added an interesting dimension to placement that's not normally there in tower defence. The last turret being able to destroy itself is amusing, and again gave another dimension to placement (you *want* it to break at the right time so it won't shoot itself).

I was expecting just another tower defense game but with frantic repairing, but it made me engage my brain a new way, pleasantly surprised! (P.S. I got to level 9).

sndr 2020-04-25 07:46

Wow - this is a very neat idea! I actually liked the fixing mechanic, kept me engaged (although at times a bit angry at the turrets!) and tense. It added a bit extra to usual tower defense games which made it quite unique, original and interesting.

One thing that is just a thought is that maybe they do break a little bit too often - so often that there's a point where buying further turrets for me wasn't worth it because I knew I was going to lose them. So I guess that depends on what kind of experience you'd want players to have.

marbles 2020-04-25 09:59

@delph When I played it for the first time, I was also surprised it engaged my brain! I think I entered the flow state  . The last turret is not able to shoot itself per se, its attack is an area attack that can also affect your towers so a good strategy is to place it somewhere where it cannot destroy itself or other towers.

@sndr Thanks! I want that kind of experience where there's some decision making. Not the typical tower defense where you just put a new tower and just watch them kill the monsters.

despdair 2020-04-25 14:27

nice one, delays between attacks felt too long to me, you can add a button like send attack early

adonisdevs 2020-04-25 22:54

I had a couple of weird bugged games, but afterwards I thought it was really fun! I made it to round 10 and then got destroyed lol. I think that besides balancing issues (I think the turrets should break down waaaaay less often) this would be basically perfect :D

codyhansen 2020-04-26 00:14

I'm not usually a fan of tower defense games at all.

But I really enjoyed the "do your own fixing" mechanic! It really feels like I have way more control over the game and how things go. It feels good with the enemies progressively changing as well!

It does get difficult as the game progresses, but it was manageable for quite a while. I loved that there was more to the game than first expected. Good game!

trozeman 2020-04-27 17:20

Great job for one person.

The game feels very nice!

But the idea with repair towers changes game type.

In my opinion, this is so hard to use a keyboard for another task in the tower defense game.

sarahfrisk 2020-04-28 22:28

Great innovation on the traditional tower defense with having to repair the towers constantly, definitely adds a new tactical aspect to tower defense! I had fun with it, great job!

meelo 2020-04-29 03:22

This was a lot more fun than I was expecting from the concept - I was quite enjoying the skill aspect of it by the end, although the tower defense aspect seemed largely forgotten once I had 3 prototype #3's going and plenty of money in case there was a problem. I think that adding some greater level of risk vs. reward would befit this game - like towers that have some extra special effect, but need a lot of attention; possibly doing this as some sort of upgrade tree would be really nice. I would also suggest that you allow WASD input (or, even better, though not so likely in a game jam: allow custom key bindings) - my keyboard has really small up/down keys, which made this rather difficult. I like the idea here - it seems like it just works to create a fun game, and I think it's even a concept that could be pushed further to make a really good game. Nicely done.

marbles 2020-04-29 11:03

@meelo Thanks! I'm working on the post jam game now with all your feedbacks taken into account. I made Tower 3 to have only 2 shots (but I have increased it for the post jam version) before needing to be repaired and to have area attack so I hoped there was risk vs reward there but yeah I would like to add more towers with some other abilities or effects. For the WASD input I was thinking of adding it along with QWER and put in hard mode difficulty (randomly use arrow keys, WASD, or QWER). But I will also add them as an option in the easy mode.

pfeyffer 2020-04-29 14:24

That was stressful. Nice take on the tower defense.

lcstark 2020-05-15 10:08

A really nice tower defense game! It's a shame I didn't find it during the voting phase, but I'm glad I could play it now. ;)

The repair mechanic is really good. Usually, tower defense games devolve into just placing more and more towers, going for the sheer quantity. Some of them have tower upgrades, which reduces that a bit, but not by much. The repair mechanic totally fixes that problem. Of course, you still need more turrets to damage more and tougher monsters, but you also need to make sure you can keep up with the repairs.

One thing I'd get rid of is the timer on repairs. I feel like the repair itself mitigates player's efforts well enough, since they can only repair one tower at a time. Having the towers get destroyed when you don't manage to fix it in time seems like too much punishment. Just leave the damaged turret there, it will be a hindrance to the player until they manage to repair it.

Also, the third tower's ability to destroy your own towers (including itself!) doesn't really feel that good. Perhaps it could be replaced by something like a mine - you'd place it on the path and it would be one use only splash damage to everything in the area. With proper warning that it does damage your turrets, it should work fine.

I've played it twice and managed to win my second game. The music is really good, it does fit the game's frantic gameplay well. Overall, it's a very good idea, and a pretty good execution. I liked it. ;)

marbles 2020-05-16 06:04

@lcstark I think if there was no timer there would be no adrenaline rush. But I have already decided that I would put that in easy mode. Normal mode would be the default settings and I am thinking of hard mode.

Thanks for having the time to give feedback even if the event is done!
