LD49 — Unstable

Zandaka by lilkrit 2021-10-20T17:51:30Z

I think the game is relaxing and I really like that you implemented glow effects on the spheres. The lighting adds a lot to the atmosphere, and on multiple occasions I saw where an enemy was by its faint glow. In a game where time is of the essence I think this glow effect helps you a lot in figuring where the enemies are.

If you make a sequel I think you could expand on these effects and maybe add some audio and some particles on collisions, maybe a bit more movement to the spheres to make the scene seem a bit more alive. I did like that the orbs that replenish your resources automatically come towards you, because it signals which orbs you should collect and which you should shoot at:)

Gunstable Tanks by Gus the Shark 2021-10-05T19:09:52Z

Great music choice and I loved the design of the main character. The game is exciting to play, and I really appreciate all the small details that you added: the bullets have a nice outline that make them really stand out, the enemies' movement is unpredictable (really keeps you on your toes...or stops you in your tracks --- you are a tank, after all). When lots of bullets are flying on the screen it is really fun to dodge the bullets, and I loved the way you showed that the DASH meter is slowly recharging (one letter at a time) + cool trail effect on dash.

An Unstable World by TheInkSkeleton 2021-10-12T16:43:40Z

I liked the overall art style that you used (nice cover image, too) and the way the character moved was unique and interesting. I think some sounds would have helped a bit, but I understand that time was short. It is an interesting idea that hopefully you get to expand on in the future :)

The Robotic Savior by Rolly 2021-10-13T16:11:24Z

Cool concept and fun game. I liked how unpredictable/unstable things could get. It really felt like a race to the finish, because I didn't know what to expect next. And clearly a lot of care has been put into the art (sounds and graphics). I liked that everything had a distinct sound effect :)

The Walls Are Tumbling Down! by zubspace 2021-10-07T17:29:11Z

I like the sound design in this game and I think that having different sounds for what is happening really adds a lot to the experience. The graphics also fit the game nicely.

The way the enemies keep spawning made me want to keep moving forward and finish the level as quickly as possible, and it keeps things fun.

Disconnection Bridge by matthewrobo 2021-10-20T17:47:20Z

The minimalist art style fits the game perfectly and I like how you telegraph that the pieces of the bridge are not stable for a very long time. I immediately knew what was happening to them and did my best to quickly "stabilize the situation". And it's cool that the packets jump in the air once before falling, as you get an extra chance to place a piece of the bridge under them :)

One suggestion I have to help a bit with learning the tricky controls would be to start off with having to only guide one packet, and then gradually ramping up the challenge.

PS: I think extra congrats should be granted due to the fact that you participated in the jam even though you had plans to play a game in the weekend the jam was running. There was a lot of care put into your game and it's cool that you decided to make a game for people to enjoy. Hopefully you got to play what you were waiting for too! :)

Ice Pop! by essarrgee 2021-10-12T16:43:02Z

I liked the art and the music added a lot to the atmosphere. These two meshed nicely. The gameplay is fun as well :) Having to guide the penguins instead of picking them up and placing them in the designated spot adds a lot to the challenge, especially when you're being followed around by enemies.

Dark Plunge by LBO 2021-10-07T17:35:08Z

Really nice game, it reminded me of Downwell :) The ominous music fits very well with the game, and I loved the animation of the mace (those trails are super cool) and of the ranged attack. Having to choose where you want to land and using your dash, jumps and attacks really makes you think and is a great way to keep the game fun.

Clad In Plaid by ModdingMachine 2021-10-12T16:42:33Z

The game is fun and seeing the huge miniguns spring to help you out was an unexpected and fun surprise. I liked the idea, it's something new and interesting. It was cool that you added some voice over :) The gun shot sound was ok, but I think something with a bit more punch would have been even better. Nice job!

Seesaw King by GandalfTheGod 2021-10-10T13:43:30Z

Very cool idea and the gameplay was fun! Great music choice as well. The glow effects fit perfectly with the game and if you combine that with the sounds the game feels like something out of Tron. Nice upgrade system, too.

Maritime for a Latte by VeniTheRich 2021-10-07T17:24:53Z

Love the idea and the game oozes personality (and coffee :D). Really cool art and the compass going crazy and camera movements really fit well with the theme.

Really nice music and it suits the game perfectly. I found the experience to be fun and it's also definitely unique and funny. The ship's horn and the coins clinking really add a lot to the atmosphere.

Grabanakki by Saturnyoshi 2021-10-07T17:33:27Z

Really good game, with beautiful pixel art, great soundtrack and unique gameplay. I really liked the enemy variety and the fact that your weapon is also your platform (and shield from attacks), so you have to think from where you want to take your "ammo" so that you won't create too many gaps and fall. And when enemies that can destroy your platforms come in, it really adds a lot of tension. It was a very fun experience!

Unstablium by rubenwardy 2021-10-13T21:08:06Z

Really cool idea! There really should be more games with car chases, so I'm glad you made one. I hope you expand on it in the future :) The particle effects that appear when the enemy cars explode are nicely done and the muzzle flash is a nice touch as well, but I think that bullets should be a bit bigger.

The game was intense (as a car chase should be) and it was fun.

Also, I don't know if the problem was on my end, but I couldn't hear any audio.

Holdbreaker by Rustywolf 2021-10-05T19:32:02Z

The game is fun and I think that the Unstable theme was implemented quite nicely, as I felt a sense of urgency even though I don't think there is a time limit to reaching the end. I really felt that I had to finish the skeleton quickly, and I kept attacking it constantly. Probably it was a combination of the screenshake and the falling debris :)

Rocket C h a o s by Juanv 2021-10-20T18:12:23Z

Fun gameplay, cool effects and the music choice is very good. The track sounds good by itself and I think it really fits the intense gameplay well. I think the light distortion adds a lot to the atmosphere and to the fact that the ship is near a black hole (which is nicely animated as well - the animation really makes it seem unstable).

The art and the particle effects are great, but I would make the bullets a bit bigger. And maybe increase their speed a bit. Nice job :)

Stick-Stack-Stuck by robbietaco 2021-10-12T16:41:53Z

Very cool idea and it's a fun game. I have a soft spot for World of Goo and your game reminded me of it. After I figured out how I have to play the game, it was a really fun experience. The combination of using bubble gum as mortar and then placing the block was quite fun :)

Dank Brew of the High Mage by John Luke Lusty 2021-10-07T17:26:48Z

Very funny idea (and cool story!) and it's quite a unique game. And the game has beautiful pixel art, especially the dragon and the way the character disintegrates :D Unfortunately, I didn't manage to slay the dragon, but I'll try again. Might need a bigger table to succeed :)

Unstable Adventures of the Space Engineer by Sceef 2021-10-06T20:43:18Z

I like the music you have chosen. Made the atmosphere very unsettling. Especially in space, atmosphere is important :D You could say that the atmosphere makes you lose your grip on your sanity, making you a bit Unstable.

And I liked the design of the main character and the LD 49 Easter Egg that you placed.

Hello Darkness. My old Friend. by Aquachain 2021-10-07T21:46:02Z

Really like the unique look of the game, and the levels are fun to play, as there is a good variety of elements in the levels (platform types, springs, spikes). And I think the music was a great match for the game. I am curious how the sped up version of the track sounds like (the music that starts if you stay too much in one spot). I liked the game, I'm glad you got this done as well :)

Wobbly Cannonry by LucDeligne 2021-10-07T17:31:27Z

It's such an original and fun idea and the graphics are truly beautiful. And the effects as well, the trails, the explosions, the way the turrets light up the surroundings when they shoot.

The gameplay is very fun and unique and the way shooting works really makes you think about balance. Destroying enemies is fun, because in addition to the cool effects (screen shake and great explosion sprite work) you know that the kills are hard to get, and you feel like you really earned it :)

We're Going Nuclear! by Ryan Winstead 2021-10-14T09:32:32Z

I like how creative your game is. The music is great for this type of game and adds a lot of tension to the atmosphere, but at the same time it's not too distracting. And I think implementing mini games to fix various things in other rooms was a really nice touch and it contributes to the unstable theme.

One thing that I would change is making the character sprite move a bit faster between the rooms (the red circle that travels). Not too fast, because a bit of a break helps, but maybe a tiny bit faster. After all, there is a potential nuclear explosion looming over the power plant :)

Alien Disco by Ludokultur 2021-10-09T19:29:15Z

It's a fun game! Having to juggle between dancing, searching for the stamina item and moving to the circles that matched the progress bar really kept me engaged. Also, I think the music worked well with the game.

Watch Your Step! by Rmu 2021-10-14T09:17:40Z

Cool game and a unique take on platformer-type games. It's fun to have a button that does two different things depending on other inputs or the situation you are in, sort of like in a fighting game where you do a combo. Or how Nintendo games have an action that does many different things :)

The background art is very cool, but some audio would really add a lot to the experience. And probably add some sort of indicator that the platforms disappear after a while (maybe some subtle flashing?). If you make a sequel it's something that probably you could take into account.

Shaky Shapes by joaosilva22 2021-10-06T20:45:48Z

Great concept and fun game. And it was a surprisingly tense experience (so many close calls, especially on the third shape :D). I think that the graphics work really well, and all the details add a lot to the experience. The constant screenshake does a lot to sell you on the unstable theme, and even though it is constant it is not annoying at all. It's quite a challenge to achieve that (I am sometimes guilty of adding waaay too much screenshake to my games).

And I like the particle effects that appear when the shape hits the floor :D

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-05T19:15:17Z

@gus-the-shark Thank you very much for the kind words! I'm happy you liked the game.

1600 letters is quite a lot. You must be good at typing. I didn't reach 1600 letters, and I made the game :)

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-06T20:46:12Z

@sceef Thank you for playing! Glad you enjoyed the game :)

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-06T20:47:02Z

@joaosilva22 Thank you for playing! There is a list of improvements for this game, and I'll certainly add your observation to it as well :) I agree with you that making the character sort of roll through the level a bit more seamlessly could have added a bit more coolness to the experience. Thank you for the feedback!

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-07T17:26:05Z

@micheldever Thank you for playing my game and for the feedback! I'll have to work a bit more on the responsiveness (though I did make some progress on this), and I believe I managed to fix the bug you mentioned, where spamming the key wouldn't get you to the next square.

I like your idea of making the blocks fall more quickly the more you play. I'll implement that in a potential Running Keys 2. I think that more variety would help the game a lot, and this is a very good idea for that. And it would be cool to make words appear in a string, I agree. Will think about ways to implement that.

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-07T17:27:49Z

@karsinis This is a very good idea as well, to make the block move faster if you typed faster. It would make the player feel more in control. Just fixed some lag issues the game had, and I think I have an idea on how to implement this. I realize that it can get a bit frustrating to press something and the game not reacting accordingly. Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-07T17:30:47Z

@zubspace I'm happy to hear that the main menu screen tutorial is working. Making tutorials is not my strong suit, and I was afraid that what I implemented is not enough.

I agree with you and I will have to find a way to make the game let you type faster. Adding some real words is a good idea, as it can add some variety. Thank you for the feedback and for playing my game!

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-07T17:32:35Z

@lucdeligne Thank you for playing and for the feedback :) Glad to hear that you liked the animation and the sound effect. At one point I removed the cube spinning in the air, and I thought that some coolness was lost in the process. I'm happy to hear that you think I made the right choice in keeping the animation :D

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-07T17:34:43Z

@valentines Thank you for the feedback and for playing! Will work on the responsiveness more. I fixed some issues and made the gameplay a bit more responsive, but more work is needed. I can't update the game at the moment, but I'll probably make a sequel or something at some point :)

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-07T17:36:07Z

@tobb Thank you for the feedback and for playing! I think I managed to fix the responsiveness a bit (and eliminated some nasty lag issues that I found), and I think I'll release a 1.5 version or something similar in the future :)

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-12T16:44:15Z

@malcolm To be fair, the game doesn't have a lot of audio, so I can understand a lower score there :) Some music would definitely be nice. Probably sound helps because it's sort of a sign that you can press a button. That was my intention. And speaking of responsiveness, I fixed (hopefully) this issue and the game plays more smoothly. I will try and release a sequel in the future, after the jam ends :) And your typing probably doesn't suck as much as you think, because the game sometimes doesn't register the commands properly (I fixed that though). Ha, if you play the sequel probably it will improve :D Thank you for playing and for the feedback!

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-12T16:47:20Z

@robbietaco Thank you for playing and for the feedback! Based on the feedback received, I improved (hopefully) the overall movement. I plan to release a new version in the future. Hopefully you play the new one as well and enjoy that version too :)

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-12T16:48:57Z

@moddingmachine I removed the cooldown and made the game more responsive :) As for adding words, it's something that I might add in the future (I am currently working on a new version, with some much needed improvements). Thank you for the words of encouragement and for playing!

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-12T16:50:05Z

@essarrgee The cooldown timers are removed and the game is more responsive, and I think it feels better to play and is more fun. I'll release a new version in the future with these changes. Thank you for the feedback and for playing!

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-12T16:50:36Z

@theinkskeleton Thank you for playing and for the feedback! I couldn't really tell when I first made the game that it was so unresponsive, but now I can see that it is something that had to be fixed. Fortunately, I managed to find what I had to change and now it feels better to play :) I'm glad you liked the art, I know it's something that has to be improved :D And yes, I agree that some music would be great. Maybe in a sequel.

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-13T21:12:47Z

@rubenwardy Typing-based platformer does sound like a cool idea, though! I'll have to think about how that would work :) The game was envisioned as a different take on the infinite runner genre, but a platformer using this framework would indeed be interesting. Thank you for the feedback (and for praising the tutorial/menu) and for playing! Also, I'm working on a sort of sequel, which has improved controls. Hope you give that a try and hopefully you enjoy that version more (this version doesn't have the most responsive controls, which probably had an effect on your enjoyment).

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-14T09:15:16Z

@rengo Yes, sorry about that. It's a bug, that's why sometimes nothing happens when you press a button (if you press the A button it will work) :) I made a pretty big mistake in my logic, but I found it and changed my ways :D Thank you for playing and for the feedback!

PS: I'm making a 1.5 version with lots of bug fixes and better responsiveness. Hope you play that and enjoy it more when I release it.

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-20T17:37:26Z

@lilkrit Thank you for playing and for the feedback! If you like this version, I'm working on a 1.5 update that brings various improvements to the game. It will most likely be available on my itch.io page soon-ish :)

Running Keys by cip 2021-10-20T17:38:37Z

@matthewrobo Yes, definitely agree with you :) I will soon release an updated version, with much better controls, bug fixes and with some additions that will offer you a better challenge. Or, a challenge :D Thank you for playing and for your feedback! Hope you check out and enjoy the new version as well (very likely to be released on my itch.io page).

Uncertain Orbits by Malcolm 2021-10-12T16:41:21Z

Congrats on completing your first game! And it's a good game, I hope you continue making games :) The graphics are very cool and having to take into account how gravity influence your shots is a cool mechanic that has a lot of potential. Hopefully you implement some of your ideas in a sequel and we see Uncertain Orbits 2 in the future. Also, bonus points for including a story, it's a nice touch. PS: I've heard of P5.js from the brilliant The Coding Train channel, but I've never seen any games completed with it. It's super cool that you managed to do it.
