Nice idea but i couldn't get past the third round ;D
A nice platformer! I was sitting there thinking why is it called "Hello Darkness, My old Friend"... then the darkness came.
This is overall a fun little platform game, that starts easy, but it gets really difficult. The music and drawings is perhaps not the best, but it works. Overall a pretty good jam game. Well done.
I really, really enjoyed the pencil drawn aesthetic of this game. There were a lot of really cool platforming elements too. Unfortunately I got stuck on one level with some pretty scuffed design so I wasn't able to finish it, but I really enjoyed what I could play. Nice job!
I love the sketchy look of the game, but there were a few levels that had springs that simply did not work, and it made it tricky to complete. Very good first ever jam entry! I wish you well on your future jamming adventures!
Nice game, I like the simple "pencil drawn" style. The controls are a bit janky and there seems to be a some sort of a double jump, probably not intentional. One the later stages just gets too hard to beat as the tempo gets faster. I liked the music and completion melodies.
Good stuff!
I was wondering why it was named "Hello darkness my old friend" when everything was so bright until the darkness actually came and made everything more interesting. I enjoyed it, the levels were well designed and the controls were good.
Good work!
Love the art style!
Couldn't get past level 3 (or so) as it felt like I couldn't jump high enough to get to the next platform.
If you put more work in it you could make this an actual game that people will pay money for - the art style is really lovely.
Congrats on finishing your first game jam! You did incredible, graphics and audio are super pleasant. Gameplay is fun and easy to understand (I like when I don't need tutorials to learn how to play). If I had to criticize something I'd say sometimes the platforming gets a bit clunky but that's understandable given it's a Compo game.
Nice art style! I thought it was really difficult for me (I'm not good at plataform). One thing that might help is make it possible to jump a little bit after the plataform. I liked the game. Great job
You have created a fitting art style. The hugging stick men are cute. The music came close to very good. The speed change when the darkness approaches was a nice touch.
There were a few issues that I have encountered: - The jump height felt inconsistent. This made level 3 rather difficult. It seems that you get a boost if you jump off of an angled platform that is mandatory for progression. - Sometimes when you jump there was nothing in the field of view, which made judging distance travelled difficult. - Double rotating spike platforms felt cheap the first time round.
I got stuck on level 5 after I couldn't figure out how to get thru the breaking platforms in time. The skill test leading up to the puzzle discouraged experimentation.
The art style is very distinctive, I loved the main menu! Basically I +1 everything @voidsay said, although I couldn't get past the third level.
For your next game, make sure it adapts well to all window sizes, my screen is 1600x900 and the browser window is even smaller in height and the game got cut on the bottom.
Good job and congrats on your first jam ever!
Fun platforming! I would have wished for some indicators for the jumppads. Since they would bounce you in different heights.
Also enjoyed the art style:) Well done!
Game looks amazing - especially the googly eye.
Apparently one can glitch the bouncy pads, stick around and generate quasi infinite forward momentum, then jump and "warp" off the map
Nice graphics, nice audio too. the game is good but sometimes i feel likes the jump dont works. nice overall game, dont stop doing games!
I love the art style, but the physics are a bit tight. I would look into adding coyote time to some of the jumps (allowing the player to jump slightly after they've left the platform) because it's an awkward feeling to slightly mis-time a jump and have the input not count.
Congrats on your first jam! You should be proud of this one :) I really like the hand-drawn style and, despite some minor jank it functions well as a basic platformer. I'm not the biggest fan of some design choices though, like how when the spikes turn over they do a double-take to trick you if you try jumping on them... that and some of the springs not actually being bouncy so I would just walk off not thinking I had to jump :/ The music isn't the best, but it's probably better than no music at all. Overall this is a good start and I hope you continue to make games in the future!
I love the aesthetic, the simple drawn graphics with no ui is such a clean design. Gameplay felt like it controlled pretty well too, so good work
Wow - the aesthetic was great, music was good, and I really liked all the puzzles. The difficulty was challenging but fair. A lot of the "challenging" games here on ludum dare I find are just unreasonably hard because the developer had spent way too much time on their own game so they had gotten really good at it. This game I was actually able to beat in a reasonable amount of time while still feeling like I had to try multiple times. Really sweet the way you hug somebody at the end, nice touch.
edit. came back to say that I wish there was "Mood" as a voting category for this game! I really wanted to give this a top mood score!
Very well-designed game. I like how it shows you the different mechanics in the first few levels, yet the later stages are pretty challenging and use the game's mechanics to provide a great challenge. I had lots of fun trying to beat the last stage, even thought that time limit is tight... And being a meme connoisseur I laughed at the ending, haha
Art style is good. Sometimes, I feel unfair. Because objects looked same have different parameter.
I like the simple look very much. Plays very well! I would love to have a bit more about the idea/background why the darkness is chasing the character... so... well done!
love the art style. kinda felt weird to have to hold up to jump higher.
Nice game, got stuck on third stage and then I understood what darkness has to do with it
nice platformer, characters are pretty nice
Love the hand-drawn style! It looks lovely. I unfortunately got stuck on the level with a lot of platforms where you have to wait for them to break. Darkness always got me. Great first entry! Controls could use a little polishing - sometimes it felt like if character double jumped and sometimes I fell out of the moving platform instead of jump which didn’t feel fair, but over all, this is a very solid entry, love it! And small touches like googly eye. Great job!
Really like the unique look of the game, and the levels are fun to play, as there is a good variety of elements in the levels (platform types, springs, spikes). And I think the music was a great match for the game. I am curious how the sped up version of the track sounds like (the music that starts if you stay too much in one spot). I liked the game, I'm glad you got this done as well :)
Wow, this is amazing for your first game jam! I like the beautiful hand drawn art style. The adapting music is awesome and you packed in a ton of different platformer elements! Played it through the end and love the underlying message of togetherness.
Well done!
