LD39 — Running out of Power

Power Stationed by ReboundGames 2017-08-02T04:02:30Z

This was fun! Great job. I really liked the mechanics and the theme. Art is solid, gameplay challenging but simple, and a WONDERFUL take on the LD theme! Good luck.

The Day The Robots Attacked by jasperarmstrong 2017-08-02T04:23:06Z

Fun game! I like the gameplay, it was fun juggling the batteries, using them as shields etc. Maybe some more prominent feedback on low ammo, and being attacked since the camera is a little close. Great game, Good luck!

Mower Storms by dracominer 2017-07-31T21:30:13Z

Tested on MacOS (Sierra) and the .jar ran just fine.

Loved the beginning cutscene, but was also slightly confused about the goal at first. It seemed like a rescue mission, but after rewatching I see its an argument between purple and black penguins for the castle (Escaping the castle, and we are preventing them from escaping it?). Would have liked a 'replay cutscene' option. Why does the castle eat penguins, why are there lawn mowers? *shrg* I like randomness so I'll go with humor points there. Slightly at a loss about which part applies to the running out of power theme?

Agree with the point about a tutorial mission. I thought my units were the ones on the left at first, causing me to think the game was unresponsive for a few seconds. When I figured out which units were mine, and saw the green squares denoting possible movement action became intuitive. Played on medium difficulty and the lawn mower only rained on 2 of my units during the entire game, so barely noticed the lawn mowers despite playing "Mower Storms" :)

The potential for strategy here is nice, but I did not play test that far. I don't think I lost any units playing on medium, so was not too worried about strategy unfortunately.

The audio is a bit harsh when multiple penguins are attacking per turn.

I really liked the different penguin sprites for each type, the fit each type's namesake and they are distinguishable-enough while not distracting. If strategy is important though I would consider making them slightly more distinguishable at a glance. (Tank has a bigger helmet, ranged maybe a larger slingshot)

The UI is a bit clunky in that it is hard to click the buttons sometimes. Example, "Return to Main Menu" button seems hard to click during gameplay.

It was awesome playing your game, thanks for participating!

Last Bot Standing: Game of the Year Edition by Shaolin Dave 2017-07-31T19:18:08Z

@ljn Thanks for checking the game out man! Perfect feedback and I totally agree. We've since added some music to give a dash of character, and some sound effects for the battery pickups, winning, and losing. We hope you get a chance to check out the improvements once it's all finalized!! Cheers!

Last Bot Standing: Game of the Year Edition by Shaolin Dave 2017-08-01T00:20:00Z

Thanks everyone for checking out the game so far! I am going to be busy playing and reviewing tonight!!!!

Greenhouse Dystopia by DeadlyAlive 2017-08-01T01:21:29Z

Nice work! The game felt very polished and the music was a perfect choice. The story was cool and had me interested! The electricity mechanics were intuitive, yet simple while the level design and monster AI still added in challenge. Being nit picky about the control scheme here but I hate when UPARROW or W is jump. Otherwise once I got over the controls (ended up using arrows and W,E) I had fun and I HAD to play it until I beat it!

I really enjoyed your level design. If this was mostly unintentional kudos for the natural talent ---

I like how the beginning of the level introduces the player to movement and jumping without pressure from dying with the platform area. As you charge (pun intended) into the level, the generator mechanic is immediately apparent, followed by the first area with scaffolding platforms and enemies blocking you, and the kite. I even knew the kite intuitively was an interactable because, its all about electricity - power running out - you're charging the world back up and the whole kite and key ben franklin bit right? That's some damned fine gameplay right there. The "Buy the DLC to fight me" guy was a nice touch of humor, but the end was a little lackluster with the typos pulling away from the overall polished feel.

Nice!

Batt(l)ery by Richard Jedlicka 2017-08-01T00:55:38Z

Note: Did not get to play it extensively on multiplayer.

Really enjoyed the graphics, and the sound too. Love the shared energy game mechanic, prevents AND incentivizes troll mechanics like burning energy shooting a wall! to keep your enemy from killing you too quickly, or getting the jump on you with health. The emergency battery regen I think could be quicker as I sat for a good amount of seconds after obliviously burning energy -- but I like that an emergency battery regen occurred, well thought out! Recharging it from anywhere on the level could be OP, but I like the strategy involved with saving up battery packs so that your enemy doesn't have the energy and then only burning the batteries when you're ready to own.

Well done and great stuff, hope to see you here more in the future!

Crazy Cat Lady: Full Throttle: Reloaded with a Revengence(?) by Shaolin Dave 2017-12-10T16:06:35Z

Thanks a ton for playing the game and giving feedback!

Crazy Cat Lady: Full Throttle: Reloaded with a Revengence(?) by Shaolin Dave 2017-12-13T15:45:57Z

@shito :) I was trollin' that day! The sheer number of cats were suppose to act as motivation for the player to go up and investigate, in hopes of trapping any players with 10+ cats in tow!

Crazy Cat Lady: Full Throttle: Reloaded with a Revengence(?) by Shaolin Dave 2017-12-13T15:49:11Z

@peachtreeoath thanks for the feedback! After Peggy escapes, you should notice a thank-you letter written to Peggy that clears the plot-line up a little. The more you have the worse it is! :D

LD46 — Keep it alive

PixelPups by Chilleh 2020-04-23T23:56:01Z

5 different pups is impressive and they all looked and animated great. Music was chillin, except maybe a bit loud on the menu. I would have loved more feedback sound from feeding/ball playing. Good interpretation of the theme, I've been wanting to make a game like this for some time! I played on PC and the ball was kind of awkward to throw, just required lots of fast mouse movement with little feedback on the ball to show I was throwing it wrong/that it was even selectable.

I went negative in the shop and bought all three things immediately. What is the rainbow looking thing, a toy? I didn't see how the bed, food, or toy helped the pup - I still felt like I had to play and feed it just as much. I also appreciate the save aspect because I accidentally exited the game by pressing escape trying to close the shop more times than I care to admit.. another bug was I accidentally "Dragged" the treat/food off the game screen (other monitor) and could no longer feed my pooch. The treat should maybe destroy after some time and let you feed again.

A Healer's Tale by Space_man 2020-04-22T05:16:33Z

I kept my team alive and they still hated on me. As a past-life healer, this whole game had me cracking up! Overall well done on the story great character development, Jesus, lol. Humor fit really well with the great gameplay concept of chasing morons through a dungeon! I found it fun and challenging to manage my cooldowns. Loved the choice of abilities, healing bomb was my best friend. Pretty well balanced cooldown durations and effectiveness and the Music was damned hype!

I would definitely keep leveling up my Jesus to take better care of those boneheads. Maybe a Heal over time, or cooldown/pickup that makes beam more powerful. Other deities with different abilities? More forgiveness on the healing beam target lock. Well done!

Dragon Eggs: Greatest Hits Edition by Shaolin Dave 2020-04-21T19:37:24Z

Very well done sir! Fun game and reminds of a few animated chess games I have played in the past, or Wizard's chess like the Harry Potter(tm) wizards play. I expect to see some carnage and battle animation in future iterations. :) The game is unique in its' ruleset which I can really appreciate given the time constraints and AI, Kudos! The AI and movement grid path finding was really well done. The CPU opponent kicked my butt every time. After discovering I had to spend all my dice points I was using statistical dice odds to try and position my units in a way that if I hit the statistical sweet spot I would prosper, but never got lucky enough to win a round. I wound up watching the CPU battle - Blue was the best during simulations!

I really enjoyed the playing board scenery, and the large slow dice rolls added some epic tension and scale to the battle. The dice rolls, and unit movement success and movement failures errors could use some feedback sound effects. I was frustrated a few times at my inability to take a enemy knight, because I wasn't spending all the spaces dictated by the dice roll, if by design that could be useful information for the tutorial.

Applause to you!

Angst by Silas Reinagel 2020-04-26T18:20:24Z

Good work team, the polish really shows. Except proofread the text -- Web server has been done {down} :spy: The gameplay became super monotonous, dont know if it was just my ignorance. I think I ate my first set of pills in the office with a fatfinger so I might have been at a disadvantage there, but like Pauline I would also hesitate to pill away my mental state so I would have played day1 the same regardless.. Move speed a little slow stamina meter invisible, no guidance in the blackout, constantly felt lost or hopeless. While this might be great commentary on mental health issues, as a player I found myself ready to put it down day 4.

Art sound and mood were fabulous of course, the concept is there and I eventually understood we are searching for coping mechanisms for pauline depending on the emotions she's struggling with. The gameplay needs small tweaks for empowerment! Perhaps item highlights in the UI when enhancers are present, halos around pickups in the world, "GPS" arrows to important items when close enough/ after a certain time spent struggling, a bit more run speed and stamina for sprint... I didn't understand the purpose of eyeglasses, icecubes, water bottles... but now reading comments and descriptions these might enhance other stress/para/humi fighting items however I didn't feel they were effective during my quest.

Escort Wing by pushxtonotdie 2020-04-22T07:33:20Z

The level design was pretty kick ass and really had a nice scale to it. I got side tracked just boosting around the asteroid fields looking for cores. Nice touch with the icons pointing at mothership and power cores at a distance. The target sights are a little low for mid range combat, but perfect up close. I got through with forgetting about a roll or throttle. The Y Invert and sensitivity option controls are awesome and makes for much better experience. Sound effects would be sweet, sometimes I would look up to almost dead mothership, or have a guy on my tail for ages. A little momentum preservation when spinning around would be cool, I found it easy to spin around and backstep people. Good job!

Heal Shield Peel by GameCarpenter 2020-04-26T17:24:07Z

i WIN, ! final results 5 out of 6. :(

I liked this I thought it was fun simple implementation of cooldown management and target prioritization. The first level is too long, spent the whole time spamming Q wondering if the other keys were broken.. When I pressed a number that didn't correspond with a party member the current party member was deselected, so nobody was selected, that was a bit frustrating several times. Would be cool to get some feedback sounds and maybe some 'fight animations' for when people are taking certain damage "quit standing in fire!". A and D might also cycle left and right through the party list. Art was lacking but still drove the point home, I liked all the bar scaling, cooldown rects growing, and the green easing into red gradient. Good work!

LD46 - Grower (not a shower) by boboman 2020-04-21T18:22:01Z

@shaolin-dave Awesome feedback man! Much Appreciated, I haven't gotten to any playtesting but I plan on reciprocating tonight! The cloud got buggy for me too but only on the webgl build, I didn't have time to triage it before submission deadline unfortunately. Also, spot on with end game state. Level 10 is as far as you can actually grow, but every grow beyond that rewards much more points, and is still a heal. So for now the game is simple high score race.. Keep the level 10 plant healthy by healing via GROW, but don't drain your water so far you start taking damage. Eventually I wanna make the rain and snow clouds disappear, and the Snow cloud AI more aggressive, better artwork and animations for the damaged plant -- for now only the level 10 plant has different sprites for different health levels.

Will update profile!

LD46 - Grower (not a shower) by boboman 2020-04-22T10:12:37Z

I appreciate you all playing and thanks for pointing out my cloud bug, I finally got it fixed! I will probably work on a good tutorial, a more interesting end game state, levels, and/or increasing difficulty system once judging is over. I wonder if a tutorial would violate the rules? Cheers!

LD46 - Grower (not a shower) by boboman 2020-04-23T01:03:57Z

@francisco-caal Thanks for playing, I realize I forgot to tag you! I am working on a better end state and in future jams will make the game 'conclude' for effect. Appreciate the feedback!

Friendly Fire by very dark lord 2020-04-26T20:01:54Z

The dancing mechanic was unexpected and fit really well. The boss-fight was nice. I am the dancing queen! Loved the dialog and the quest for wood was pretty long despite the small level area, so kudos on a job well done with level design. Double jump made the bouncy mushrooms less of a deal but nice platforming design touch. The character felt a little 'floaty' during his jumps, no pun w/ flying mode intended. The talking flying pickup, flame npc that lost his job, cheesey-joke trees, all of it was hilarious and well placed. You have a knack for writing! I noticed some grammatical errors though. Good work!!

AI* - Save Them All! by NinjaCatz 2020-04-26T18:37:33Z

This is an awesome idea! I had a lot of fun playing it. Didn't realize the microphone was so important until I read your walkthrough. I thought it was just an "alarm" for level 2. The mouse wheel is kind of weird to control zoom and some movement but once I understood how to move the camera it was a much easier game. Love the art, good asset design. GOOD JOB ON THE AI! Overall this is almost like a metal gear solid stealth mission puzzle game for animals that are hard to control! Nice work

platformEGG by Tricky_Fat_Cat 2020-04-26T19:24:03Z

Really well made game. I had a lot of fun trying to perfect my movement through the levels. Some frustration with getting bounced around spikes and ruining the play-through, so maybe there can be checkpoints, retries? This might add some /flex for players who beat it with 0 retries! I appreciated that not every hit on spikes took life. Audio queues, music, graphics, etc so well done, its hard to comment anything negatively except maybe having a volume slider option.

Loved that you have beginning levels that basically are the main menu and tutorial space combined, it perfectly introduces the mechanics of throwing and jumping and lets you play with the character movement to get the feel -- PERFECT. Throwing the egg past obstacles to safety, since you can't jump, while also keeping frog ninja safe is a very interesting mechanic and I enjoyed! This has speed running potential. I didn't quite have the patience to finish with all the pineapples. The game play feels much nicer on game pad using Dpad and Square/Triangle for egg toss and X for jump (DualShock 4). The jump and movement and air-control feels responsive is very well done. Minor frustration with not being able to land on some platform corners pixel-perfectly to avoid the saw blades, but that could just be the intention. I really enjoyed it, nice work and lots of future potential!

Jezebel and the Flame by Francisco_caal 2020-04-23T21:46:36Z

Really loved the pixel art, a little bouncy during idle. The dialog effect was great, and appreciate the fact that I could 'autocomplete'/skip to a finished paragraph. Sound effects were on point though the dialog beeping was a bit loud. Level design was great, popping in and out of peoples' houses. Mechanic was intuitive too with every person you talk to causing progression. The story was good and got me curious about the mayor, Terrence being such a hated mooch, and what Jez did to deserve being called a harlot. I played through a few times to see what dialog I could uncover and was not disappointed.

Potential Bugs: When you restart the game and leave your house you will spawn at the last house visited in the previous playthrough, win or lose. You can spam logs into terrence before jez starts moving to him.

Great work!

Damocle's Sword by M3MZ 2020-04-26T17:41:19Z

I appreciate the ear rape warning in the options but it was too late :P 10% was fine. in the tutorial PLEASE SPELLCHECK! TURRET does not have an N in it - Yes, sure, maybe I am a boomer whatever :P. just proofread your game! Paste that text somewhere to have it spellchecked! Your ART looks great and sound effects were great! vibrant colors and setting did give me a sci fi vibe, nice job. Gameplay was a little lackluster since the bots were predictable in spawn location so I started annihilating them holding down mouse1, almost before they got any shots. the boss fight was cool I liked how it transitioned and zoomed out. Nice work on a leaderboard too. The menu w/ options & volume, a tutorial, Leaderboard, tons of aspects of a good game here, well polished!

By Lantern's Light by Chez3 2020-04-22T06:00:31Z

Challenging game, fun game. I liked the checkpoint mechanic, takes a little long to relight the lamp but can refill the lamp after respawn to hack a bit more time and get a better picture of the start of the level. Punchy ending with some good tunes and I liked the credits-scrolling effect with the lamplight, well done. Good level design with nicely spaced and timed obstacles and checkpoints given the run speed. The background parallaxes a little fast. The platforms are super sensitive and maybe shouldn't start when you hit them from the side. The barrel of oil is HUGE. As others said maybe a adjust camera position lower and dampen the follow speed somehow. Maybe have the lamp explode when you get put out so you get a little glimpse of where you died. Good job.

Mr. Cheesy by SAVVU 2020-04-26T18:50:32Z

cheesy.png Like others have said, solid idea. Can't wait for you to expand. Nice touch with the youtube videos. Well polished game by way of menus, tutorials, links to social media, etc. That mouse was ready to capitalize on my every mistake and it added a lot of tension. The Perspective was surprisingly easy to grasp and the gameplay intuitive, love the spaghetti collecting the cheese when you take damage, nice touch. You have a good production quality all around, and a good social media presence. People could learn a lot from you, keep it up and I expect good things from your 'studio' I wish you all the best in your game development endeavors!

Keep Pit Alive! by BunnyDen 2020-04-23T23:11:02Z

I also had issues on my 144hz monitor, I couldn't even get out of the start zone. Luckily I read here - I just moved it to a different monitor and Pit started SOARING! Maybe check if you scale your fallspeed with time.deltaTime?

Pretty Fun game, the horse really makes it, love the art style, animations, sounds, and music. Love that he/she scoots when you stop but is slightly buggy when you hold both A and D. The input was a little choppy during the more accuracy-needed jumps, and the terrain caused strange bumps at times. I agree with other comments that the hitbox to grab an apple was sometimes slightly frustratingly small.

Great work!

Careful Defense by tsombi100 2020-04-23T21:58:53Z

Loved the gameplay, fun idea and innovating concept for tower defense. Would definitely see myself playing future versions of this. I liked the mixture of pixel art and very high res text for UI, and the music and sound was well done. Really well done over all nice work!
