Thanks for checking out my game! I've been learning 2D game development in Godot for the last few months. I decided to try my hand at making a game jam submission, and this is it! Thanks in advance for any feedback. All assets were created by me (either during the jam or for other projects) other than the font.
I'd love to continue the development of this game. Possible future goals: - Weapon upgrades - More item drops from enemies - More enemy variety - Music - More detailed environments - And so much more!

Well, only itch.io version is playable... BTW, good theme matching game.
Edit: Did you realize that minions can get stuck on the boundary of the map?

I've used far worse pistols to get through hell. Most of my thoughts about the game are already addressed in your comment: The tougher enemy types in greater numbers really demand some heavier fire power, environments could offer some kind of limited protection from the more relentless hell spawn and some music would make the experience a little less lonely. What's there, however, is quite appreciable and I enjoyed this.

Hey well done. Did you have fun? Few things I think your game needs to make it better: Less grey, more environment things. An ability that lets you dodge the bosses bullets. Currently you just have to take it like a sponge. Larger bullet projectiles, they are super small and hard to see. I think you should work on this game a little more, there is something there.

I made to Lv.4, the concept of summoning a boss and proceed to next level by deafeating it well connected to the theme, but there are some small issues: for example it is hard to dodge the fire when there are more than 2 boss, and the number of imp is fixed I suppose? When I defeat all of the imps, the game starting to get board where I need to find all 5 bones form all over the map. But overall it is fun to play. :)
Very cool, welcome to Godot :D the game is tough! I though I had a really good handle on moving and shooting until the big guy downstairs showed up the first time. Never have I wanted a dodge more! This is a cool base: Build on it and experiement. Hope you enjoyed the process!
nice game but how do i shoot

@cleverdumb thanks! You can shoot by either holding left mouse click or using the arrow keys on your keyboard. It also has controller support where the left analog stick is movement and the right analog stick is shoot.

Very compliant with the theme. I think I could maybe respawn on the same level after dying and not be thrown back to level 1 again? In general a good entry. Good job! :)
It's nice to see a wave shooter that has a goal (in this case taking the bones to the portal). Having an arrow point to the portal location would be a nice little addition.
Great job!
It's great to see people learning Godot as I am doing so too. Keep up the good job!
I think it would be great to be able to move faster, as it takes me some time to get to the bones after I've beaten all the enemies (or maybe smaller levels?). And as people mentioned, it'd be helpful to have some more ways to avoid the boss's bullets.
As people also mentioned, great work with the theme! It is a very interesting concept to summon the boss yourself, has great potential for further development of such game! (maybe, for example, the way you summon the boss affects the boss itself?)
Mini-doom! Very cool - only got to lvl2 (stacked fire demons are hard!) Thanks for the entry!
Good job on a first entry, the core gameplay mechanics worked well. The gun is plenty powerful and I liked the collecting bones to summon the boss mechanic.

Music check, multiple level check, boss summon check. And in the short time super.
Didn't get at first that you can hold fire. Nice little game, not my style but good work!

You definitely have potential for a fun game in the future! The first thing that stood out to me was the floor. I thought for a while that it was a survivor like with an infinite scroll. I was very lost until I randomly picked up a bone and happened to wander towards the pentagram. The bosses also felt a bit too punishing when there was more than 1 since you can't effectively dodge their shots and you can't increase your damage/health/speed/etc. I tried saving some healing powerups on the floor but still could only get to level 4. Overall a good start!
The gameplay is solid. I wish it would had more guns and variety of enemies. The game has potential for development. I managed to get to 4 level and they all look the same, but with more bosses. Nice entry!

I really like the loop, collect stuff to summon the boss and progress is a really solid loop. great job!
Great sound design, but devil is pretty hard
Like some others, I wish I could enact a strategy against the bosses. I attempted to spread out health from the initial enemies and then use that like a rally to survive the boss fights, but I just couldn't keep it up at level 3. Still, not a bad go for someone that's only been developing for a few months. Well done!
The sound effect of the gun is very satisfying! I hope I can run faster though, after the devil caught up with me it's hard for me to get away (Maybe can make the devil's bullet push player away from it?). Overall the mechanic was simple but fun, I also like I have multiple goals at the same time (collect bones/kill monsters). Good job~
Core gameplay is solid, the usage on the theme is on point! I think you have covered where you could go next well in your top comment. Nice work!

Congrats on your first jam submission! I hope you enjoyed learning Godot!
Your game works nice with the theme, and ramps up nicely in difficulty.
The size of the levels and the floor being all the same shade of grey makes it hard to know where you are. Some more items in the environment, or even just arrows on the sides of the screen pointing to the location of bones and the pentagram, could help with navigation.
The sounds are enjoyable!

@metagen Yeah, minions can get stuck on the edge. This is because I don't want them to move until they are on screen, and their sprites are bigger than the area for the visual onscreen notifier. In theory I think the player could wonder off screen indefinitely as well. I didn't have time to add any boundaries other than stop the camera scroll at the edge of a level.

I died a few times before I realized that you need to continuously hold down the shoot button. The idea is good, and although it still needs some polishing, it's a solid base. Adding checkpoints would be beneficial; I don't like having to start over from the beginning, especially since it gets very difficult from the fourth level. Some power-ups, like a stronger weapon, would help. Abilities such as running (with stamina) and dashing could enhance the gameplay. With further development of the basic concept, this could potentially become a great game.
Fun game! I enjoyed playing it and loved the small simple sounds, keep up the good work
Look... I'm not trying to make excuses... I'm just saying that making it to level 3 is pretty good for a guy who holds the gun with his face
Seriously, though, I think this is pretty fun! During the first level, I was thinking that it was way too easy. Once more than one boss was spawned at a time, I changed my mind.
Adding something like a dash that allowed you to dodge the bosses' projectiles would be good, because they are very hard to avoid once they get close. Also, some intense battle music would have been nice.
Overall, good job!
Great work on your first (?) jam! I think a lot of the other comments have covered what I was intending to say but I might as well do it anyway :) I think that more balance would be good - there is a good bit of walking around while there are no enemies coming at you, and then all of a sudden you get the bosses whose bullets you literally cannot dodge, so it seems like there's a bit of weird difficulty disconnect. Maybe using the ramping up difficulty (which I like the concept of!) to dictate how many enemies can spawn at once, so, first level just 1, second 2, etc. I really like that there was a goal instead of a time limit or something, so you could hurry through if you wanted. And because at least the first few maps were really big, I think being able to move a tiiiiny bit faster would be great. All that being said, I loved the silly little death noises and the combat felt quite polished for a jam game. Good work!
Oh, _hold_ the shoot button! Haha, that made it much more fun.
I really like the idea of manually summoning the boss each level, first collecting the items and then needing to decide when you're ready for the challenge. I found myself even planning out the angles I wanted to summon from to set up my strafing direction and health pickups at the right time - already some tactical complexity here! A million ways you could develop this further but the core gameplay loop you've devised is a great start.

@kristinamay thanks for the feedback! This is technically my third game jam. I did one a long time ago with a friend (he did most of the ground work and it was completely from scratch using OpenGL), and another a while ago in a completely different engine (Apple SpriteKit). This is my first jam using Godot after learning and playing with the engine for a few months. I agree with everyone on the difficulty and a desire to dodge the boss projectiles. I’ll definitely work on that if I decide to take this game farther (so many projects…too little time!). Thanks again for the feedback!
it was fun) died on lvl 5 - to many stacked demon-bosses :) congrats with first jam! keep going!

Small little game. It has a solid foundation but maybe add some more guns? Maybe some structures in the maps as well.
It took me a while to figure out how to shoot correctly hahaha. Nice idea though. Congrats!
Good work!
I would suggest adding some kind of movement ability. Maybe a simple dash with a cooldown if you want to keep practicing.
Interesting summoning shooter. I agree with the poster above, a movement ability would really make this shine!
Cool game! I understand from other comments that it is made in godot? If so, that's great! Gotta love open source!
It's really good that you didn't sleep on the sound effects, it really feels better when you get feedback when interacting in the game.
A pretty small change that I think would be nice is if you could keep tracking the mouse with the gun even when the player is not shooting. You sort of miss doing something when all the enemies are dead and you're picking up the bones. People tend to jump in games when going from A to B even if its not faster. It's just engaging to see stuff happen.
I think the gameplay could be more fast-paced, all the components are there just tweak some values. So maybe play around with faster player movement, more enemies, less life on the enemies, faster enemies, smaller level etc.
It would also be nice if it could be a slight delay after dropping the fifth bone and the boss spawns.
Anyways, you made a game, that's great!

nice game guys. As a recommendation, i w'd add some more enemys. Despite that, i leked so much de sounds fx and the movementee. Keep working on this guys<3
Congrats on finishing a game with clear goal and mechanics! The biggest hurdle as a single dev is to have something completed under a short timetable. You with only a couple of months of experience in Godot managed to do that, so thumbs up!
I would suggest map design, music for sure because you can feel it missing, animation, different enemies... but from your comment I understand all of these must be coming in the future. So take your time and have fun with it.

A cool game with a simple and very understandable gameplay, I was able to play and know what to do in 2 seconds so kudos for that :) Animations would have been great, but it's already cool to achieve this in such a short amount of time! Good job

It's an interesting concept, as others have commented, it would be better if there were more enemies. Good job!
Very refreshing shooting sound effects, I like it very much! And the head with the pistol on it is too funny hahaha.

Good job! That was scoped nicely for the Compo and it fit the theme well. I think the speed of the level-end bosses, or their projectiles was too fast. It was difficult to find a way to dodge their projectiles with keyboard controls. I imagine it'd be easier with a gamepad, though.

@rcxa Thanks for the feedback! The game does have gamepad support, but I honestly don't know if it makes it much easier, haha. Through my testing I wasn't any better with it or with the keyboard. It gives you finer control rather than just the 4 cardinal directions and diagonals, but the boss demon is just too much! This is something I'll definitely work on balancing.
Very nice & fun shooter game despite being simple in both visuals & gameplay! Love the part when you have to hunt parts you need to complete the ritual to summon the demons(?) while dealing with minions. You definitively should put on itchio page about the holding down the button to shoot (people may miss it on LD page - I know I did ;-) ) Maybe the area should have being a little smaller. it would have helped with the level not looking so empty (especially in the beginning). Not a bad thing by itself but the large level area amplified that feeling. Still nice entry and very good interpretation of the theme.

@negator2vc Thanks for the feedback! As it's currently designed, the level size is random. It could be anything from a 2x2 up to a 5x5 (where 1x1 is 1920x1080), so depending on your RNG this experience varies. I agree that the first few levels probably don't need to be so big, so the size range should be a bit smaller at first and then grow on later levels (and maybe later levels will have more stuff in them in general). This is definitely something I'll refine. Thanks for playing!
Pretty fun little game, the only thing I can think to add for feedback is that the gun is a little loud, needed to turn down my volume a bit. Still, I had a good time with it overall. :)

This is a highly addictive top-down shooter! I feel it's missing some music to add tension to the action-packed moments. However, the enemies are well-balanced in terms of health, making the game challenging. It also fits the theme perfectly, requires you to summon and then destroy the boss to progress to the next level! Great game!
It's basic but it's a game! I see you know good ways to improve it already, so I hope you continue learning and improving on godot
