Top notch production values, the music is very moody and everything looks great. The gameplay loop is simple but effective. My only complaint is that the controls seem to bug out sometimes when you hold multiple directions at once (and possibly also try to shoot?). Played it for a while trying to see how long I could run from those damn bats and still sell yams...What a polished entry.

0xwavy 2023-01-08 21:59

@feor thank you so much for the kind words! really appreciate you taking the time to leave a thorough review. i definitely see what you're saying with the movement reactivity, a mechanic i'm definitely going to iterate on.

i'm gonna go check your's out now, stoked to give it a spin :v:

mariavalcam 2023-01-08 22:02

Really nice interface and well explained controls. It is fun to try to beat the record.. and it actually gets really difficult!

Congrats ^^

0xwavy 2023-01-08 22:10

@mariavalcam thank you! definitely wanted to give players a challenge, glad you had fun with it :)

johnnysix 2023-01-08 22:33

Loved that sound-track! Cool concept. It'd be cool reward the selling of the yams with a shop to buy upgraded yam-based weapons

0xwavy 2023-01-08 22:41

@johnnysix thank you! definitely will be adding an upgrade system in the future. the yampage is just beginning.

hypernoodlejon 2023-01-08 23:11

Yams! I love Yams! Wonderfully charming, incredible music, and very very fun!! I was having a bit of trouble delivering my yams but I'm chalking that up to user error. control scheme and goals were very clear thanks to your guide here, enemy and farmer sprites are adorable, and I liked your color scheme a lot. I could see it getting really difficult very quickly, well it already was quite difficult right away, but very rewarding when I managed to just slide between multiple enemies to get free. Really fantastic work.

spiritbeard 2023-01-08 23:18

Such a fun play, thank you!!

There is a lot that's working super well here already—my favorites include the audio feedback and the delivery/survival genre mashing. It's like the Overcooked on the set of Vampire Survivors or 20 Minutes Til Dawn! Amazing—would be cool to see iterations like moving delivery trucks that change location during the level, although the level designs already give some great variety!

There are some small technical things that I think could make the feel even more enjoyable. As someone else already mentioned, character movement is probably the big one—the character sometimes keeps moving for a while after the player releases the keys, and often gets stuck on fences (probably just a collider that is too big to feel intuitive to players like me). A couple of smaller gripes you might consider is switching to a "press-and-hold" delivery system instead of button mashing and something weird where carrots delivered at the bottom of the screen fly up way fast. But overall, I had a lot of fun.

The yam puns are a 10/10! 😂

0xwavy 2023-01-08 23:22

@hypernoodlejon thank you!! really glad you had a fun time with it. i just played your's too and it was awesome. stoked we both had a productive jam! :)

0xwavy 2023-01-08 23:33

@spiritbeard wow, super in depth review, really helpful! i love the idea of leaning into the overcooked gameplay style a little more, good idea ! totally get what you're saying with the movement and appreciate you sharing your specific pain points. will be sure to address these in the future. thanks for playing!

went to take a look at your game but am not seeing one, let me know if thats a mistake so i can go check yours out if you submitted this time around!

superpokeunicorn 2023-01-09 01:38

Yamela took the kids, RIP 😔

Jokes aside, this is a cool concept! I like the idea of yams being both something you sell and something you use as a weapon. I also like the all purple visuals; very on-theme. I will say that it does get repetitive quickly; probably needs to escalate more as the game progresses. Overall, nice work!

greynovembergames 2023-01-09 01:40

Great game! loved the art and music. At times the controls felt a little sluggish, but I did enjoy it. Love the lore put into it.

tolmera 2023-01-09 02:25

pretty cool, I like the music.

Felt a little like pacman for some reason? but was cool.

rjerez192 2023-01-09 03:10

I like the mood. The shooting and farming mechanic is fun. The graphics are also fitting.

salmonmoose 2023-01-09 04:14

Very cool - to add to the others, it appears that amongst other control issues, there are issues when going from one direction to another, and back to the first one.

falkreon 2023-01-09 05:21

You can see a great game shining through here, just needs those control issues to be cleaned up. This one deserves a post-compo edition! :)

0xwavy 2023-01-09 07:15

@falkreon I'm so glad you enjoyed it and see potential. I'll definitely be revisiting this project :v:

adis 2023-01-09 09:45

Hello, yam lord, I liked that you have set up a few levels and I liked that player has a choice on what to focus: selling or killing. But, the selling is not worth it. For killing you are getting hp recoveries, score, and you're also decreasing amount of enemies. With selling you're just getting some points. Also, the movement is a bit clunky.

Lastly, I love your graphics and the Itch.io page. Good progress for 48 hours, keep it up, mate.

Overall, 4/5.

iluvatar 2023-01-09 10:35

I like the combination of Vampire survivors and harvesting crops. This is one of those perfect Ludum Dare games, when the gameplay is not long enough to take much of your time, but fun enough to keep you engaged. Maybe more animations would be cool to see the enemies burst into flames or something, but other than that, pretty sweet game :)

simsax 2023-01-09 11:18

I love the attention to the details in this one, even the itch.io page looks amazing. Graphics and sound fit very well together, very impressive

holysparks 2023-01-09 16:28

Honestly the overall concept and mechanics are very good. Looks and sounds nice too.

The only issue I had was the movement which was feeling kinda sticky, specially when trying to go diagonal.

chum-chum 2023-01-09 19:58

Cool mechanics! Yams are very cool  Movement was a bit rigid, but other than that it was a fun game to play.

rrsmtz 2023-01-09 20:21

Fun! Definitely has a strong vibe. As others have mentioned, when going up or down, seems like left-right is disabled.

patsui 2023-01-09 20:42

Music and color palette set the mood well!

Idea is nice but execution is a little janky. Good job!

ben-toosey 2023-01-09 21:53

I like that you have to harvest your ammo. Very fun!

jujus 2023-01-09 22:08

This is so cute!

kuboxxxxx 2023-01-09 22:19

I love it, never got so excited while playing such a simple yet fun game. Also love the purple theme

scidev 2023-01-09 22:20

This is a funny little game, nice idea using the harvested crops as ammo, however I couldn't figure out how to deliver the yams!

Anyway, nice work and good luck in judging!

avi 2023-01-09 22:42

Fun game! I liked the concept + art -- but i had a bit of trouble with the movement, it seems like the movement would "stick" sometimes/there was a delay in updating the player movement? Maybe this was intentional?

square-wave 2023-01-09 23:48

I exhaled through my nose pretty strongly reading all your yam puns. Overall solid execution, fun aesthetic, great humor, and a nice use of the theme. Great work!

0xwavy 2023-01-10 02:43

@square-wave i can rest easy knowing that at least one person nose exhaled. in all seriousness though, thank you! appreciate you taking the time to check my entry out

0xwavy 2023-01-10 02:44

@avi not intentional, but i appreciate you giving me the benefit of the doubt lol. glad you liked the aesthetics! definitely going to rework the movement, as that seems to be everyone's main gripe. thanks for taking the time!

0xwavy 2023-01-10 02:45

@scidev thanks for checking out my entry! you deliver yams in the little "bins" (by the fences) by pressing 'Q'. happy delivering!

0xwavy 2023-01-10 02:48

@kuboxxxxx thank you so much, that means a lot, glad you had fun! had to go purple for the yams! :v:

0xwavy 2023-01-10 03:02

@adis totally agree with you that i can incentivize selling yams more - im thinking upgrade system, leveling stats, etc. for future releases. thanks for playing, glad you had fun with it!

0xwavy 2023-01-10 03:04

@iluvatar thank you so much, i'm honored! i saw a post of your game and am obsessed with the art, so your review means a lot! totally would've loved to put some enemy death animations, etc. in. Definitely for future releases!

I'm checking out your game tonight, stoked! :v:

0xwavy 2023-01-10 03:08

@simsax @adis thank you guys so much for taking notice of the itch page, honestly one of the aspects of this jam i'm proudest of haha

dramonsa 2023-01-10 04:16

Really nice, i love the atmosphere and the main character design :D

acdimalev 2023-01-10 04:27

Glad to see the lore screen included in the game. : )

I can see that you're using drift to smooth out the controller inputs. Maybe dial this back and get diagonal inputs working?

Random variation on enemy speed helps spread out the monsters some. Having some of the monsters (maybe just the bats) more around randomly rather than following the player may be an easy way to add more variety to this kind of gameflow. I'm also noticing that sometimes the monsters spawn very close to the player.

cloistered 2023-01-10 04:55

Cool game. When i use mouse to shoot, unable to know the exact direction of the bullet~Maybe scale the collider smaller.I think in this view ,collider cover player's feet, not cover head ,will be more satisfied.(Sense of space)

0xwavy 2023-01-10 05:01

@acdimalev i see you took a look at the source, sweet! really appreciate that advice actually. i figured it was the drift, i'll play with it and make it a little more natural in future editions.

bartalomew 2023-01-10 14:55

is it possible to throw the yams the other direction? I failed to find it unfortunately :( the visuals and the atmosphere of the game is pretty neat though, great job!

0xwavy 2023-01-10 19:37

@bartalomew you aim where you're throwing with the mouse, sorry if that wasn't clear in the controls. hope you get a chance to play again!

maymay 2023-01-10 19:37

I really like the purple color palette; all the art is so cute! Fun game and feels nicely polished

recursiveanomaly 2023-01-10 22:57

Nice style and music. I liked that the reload required moving around the level.

danmerey 2023-01-10 23:39

Interesting color scheme

jeremyfa 2023-01-10 23:40

Nice entry! The spooky mood is there with the graphics and the music! Easy to understand gameplay loop and as other said forcing the player to move around to reload "ammo" was smart :)

tessahardin 2023-01-11 00:36

Your take on the theme is genius, and the pixel art and palette is tasteful and cute, such a fun game!

0xwavy 2023-01-11 01:32

@tessahardin thank you so much! glad you had fun :v::smile:

olddog 2023-01-11 03:32

Snipaste_2023-01-11_11-30-01.png

funny little game ,like the art style and music

ps: moving system knid of wield, seem like when I am moving in one direction cant change to another smooth

0xwavy 2023-01-11 05:36

@danmerey had to go purple for the yams!

bowen 2023-01-11 06:52

Good idea! But I feel stuck with the control of my character, I cant move to both left and up. Maybe you can improve your code of move, making your character can move to two direction in the same time.

stefan-laimer 2023-01-11 08:20

Really nice game. As others have already mentioned the controls are sometimes a bit wonky but otherwise it's a lot of fun. Great job!

projectaroid 2023-01-16 16:11

Cool game. It looks and plays really nice. The game feels really polished. Nice work.

cat-lab 2023-01-26 23:58

Really polished entry and so much fun to play. It took a little while to figure out how to sell the yams and I couldn't help but often be overrun by enemies (but this only made me want to play more). Great sound and visuals!
