Very beautiful game visually, I really like the colors you chose ! But I find it incredibly difficult ! Sadly, I couldn't beat the second Level : "Suspension".

Still great experience overall !

comfy 2021-10-04 12:26

The game is reall really hard. I got through one level, but judging from the one level that I beat I can say that this game is great. The visuals are pretty. The pixelart is pretty basic but what really sells the look is the pretty color palette you chose along it. I like how the gameplay is really changing constantly, which makes the game not feel annoying.

Great job with this overall <3

Good job this game fits to well!

silkworm-sweatshop 2021-10-04 14:45

Awesome, a real gem! Everything is superpolished and I love how the 3 levels have different gameplay styles. Gets pretty challenging especially those last moments of the boss fight.

shp 2021-10-04 14:47

Pretty rare to have such a multi-genre game in a jam, so respect for that!

xcvzxc 2021-10-04 15:06

Gosh, the second level controls were designed by satan himself, but with support of my family and friends I managed to beat it after 100 tries. I like music but it got boring after these 100 tries... maybe it shouldnt start over after every death. Visuals are quite neat. Overall nice entry

slimmerburger 2021-10-04 15:35

I really like the idea of a game where every level is in a different genre

m11 2021-10-04 15:43

Really nice colour palette :)

dent 2021-10-04 20:39

Looks, sounds & plays really nice, well done!

solah 2021-10-04 20:45

Wow, this game is gorgeous, but why is it so hard T_T I would love to see the end but I can't manage to end the second level. I really love the art, sounds and music, it really feels like a good old nes game.

zettabit 2021-10-04 20:53

This game is definitely packed full of ideas, but I think it was made a bit too difficult. The second part was kind of a nightmare. I think making the controls more forgiving, or adding checkpoints would help a lot. The graphics, especially the color palette were very nice though.

dnabro 2021-10-04 22:24

First part was simple yet fun, second part was like hard flappy bird. Sometimes RNG would make it impossible which is my real complaint with it. Visually it's fantastic. I wish I could have gotten to the final level but the second one stalled me out.

badpiggy 2021-10-05 06:28

Visuals are awesome and the soundtrack is amazing as well, except the second part is just too hard and unforgiving lol. I think if the ship did not do a divebomb when you mess up the button prompt it would have been a lot more manageable. In it's current form it's a little too hard since you have to keep track of the birds, the current position of the ship and which button you need to press. A decent entry though

turncoda 2021-10-05 15:05

A well-rounded and cohesive game. Great work all around. I liked the cutscenes; short, charming and makes for a good break to congratulate myself for beating the last stage and to get ready for the next one.

I really enjoyed the boss fight. After a while I noticed I could move up close to increase my rate of fire. It would have been a cool risk-reward but there was no risk to moving up really. I also found it was easier to dodge the attacks moving vertically rather than horizontally, which is what I was doing at first. If there was some kind of attack to discourage getting close, that tactic might not have worked as well as it did.

I once died on Suspension without knowing what hit me. A split second later I realized I hit a camouflage bird.

irwatts 2021-10-05 15:16

Awesome style and colors! The art is really on point. I did get stuck on the second stage though. Hitting the wrong key and divebombing is a little too punishing I think. Difficulty aside, I think this feels very complete and polished. Good job!

johnlee-cooper 2021-10-05 16:44

a cool game, and a pretty interesting problem to tackle, trying to have 3 totally different games in a row like this but still be part of the same difficulty arc and story. I do agree that the second part is a bit over punishing, and with the randomized birds i kinda feel like i mostly progressed by getting lucky. I think it could be toned down, if you wanted to, fairly easily by just making the birds not one shot you? also I looove the palette.

reccy 2021-10-05 19:02

I really enjoyed this, and loved the NES aesthetic! Only issue I had was on the second stage, where the blue bird blended into the background a bit too much and killed me twice because I didn't notice them. I think just having the white and red bird is good enough. Also having the soundtrack and some cut-scenes added some nice polish, it was very "complete" for a Ludum Dare game. Excellent entry, great work!

madjackmcmad 2021-10-06 04:16

Excellent sprite work. I would have loved to have seen the other parts of the game but the initial platforming is too punishing. I bet there's a lot of cool work hidden behind it!

rustbaron 2021-10-06 11:47

Fantastic graphics, love the retro aesthetic! Gameplay is nice, though I personally found the second level to be quite finicky and punishing. Great work regardless.

frogravity 2021-10-06 12:45

Amazing game! I loved the graphics and musics, and all the different levels (although the second level was a bit too hard as others have said). The first level, alongside the graphics and Icarus-style story, really reminded me of Kid Icarus. I had a bug in the first level where after teleporting to the other side, the block below me immediately fell away, and I think the whole game could really use some checkpoints, but other than that, great entry!

vectrex28 2021-10-06 15:11

Hah, I dig it, reminds me of Kid Icarus (and I believe this was the inspiration for it). However, man that second stage is punishing. It'd have been cool if there were a few lives on that stage, or just it being a bit more forgiving somehow. Didn't get past it unfortunately. But I still really like the multiple genres, all quite fitting with the instability theme :D

bqq 2021-10-06 16:54

Nailed the feeling of playing a NES game, the difficulty for each stage was just right so that I could finish them with a couple of attempts!

muros 2021-10-07 12:53

I liked the game. Retro graphics and sound are very interesting to look at. The setting is also interesting. But unfortunately I couldn't play for a long time. there was a bug during the flight stage. The hero immediately falls to the ground, disobeying commands. Ehh

caudatecoder 2021-10-07 16:14

Really cool NES-like game! I absolutely love the graphics and the music!

The bike part is genius and very hard at the same time. I guess you could've moved arrows from the corner closer to character so the player can see what buttons to press and watch out for enemies at the same time. Apart from that really good job. It's almost as if you built 3 games which is very impressive!

I played it and recorded it during my stream. Unfortunately I was using new software and didn’t check if everything was ok so it recorded like 2/3 of my screen  I saved recordings of games where you could still understand what’s going on. And your's is on the list. Though it's not really clear in the bike part ... I hope it will still be helpful to see how first-time player interacts with your game  https://youtu.be/KdS9PsTVR1o Your game starts at 46:23

myles-doupe 2021-10-08 00:44

Great game. The bike plane level was exceedingly difficult, and I had to map an analog stick to the arrow keys to finish it (even then, it took about 20 tries due to randomness). But the graphics and sound are great and I enjoyed level 1 and 3. Thanks for making it!

fiakaiera 2021-10-08 16:00

This is a really cool game!

I really enjoyed all of the three phases and even got some neat reactions on phase two. Of course, did not expect to be instantly KO'd on hit instead of dive bombing on hit on phase two, but the way that each phase is built up all feels natural.

Great work!

jonah-srg 2021-10-09 19:35

Wow, thanks so much everyone for your feedback. I am happy to hear the experience was enjoyable if not too frustrating. I've already got a build done with changes to the second level that will hopefully make the experience better:

1.) Hitting the wrong direction will no longer cause the bike to spiral. 2.) The bird that blended in with the background now appears with a more colorful sprite.

Hopefully that will improve things. The randomness, frequency, and speed of the birds can be easily changed as well if it's still tough with those changes. I also like the idea of the birds causing a spiral rather than instant death, that's a great suggestion I see here. If it's still too tough that definitely seems like the next best route. I'll push that build live at the end of the jam, the punishing version stays live in the spirit of the competition.

I posted a full playthrough of the jam version on Twitter in case anyone wants to see the finale. Link: https://twitter.com/jonah_srg/status/1445424750851989505

@xcvzxc This gave me a good laugh, I am both sorry and somewhat delighted!

@solah & @madjackmcmad & others who may be interested, check that Twitter link for the ending! Hope you like it.

@caudatecoder Love it! I appreciate your determination in making it through, seeing the experience beginning to end like that is so nice. Many thanks for playing and sharing the video.

runuchok 2021-10-12 13:07

Great experience, awesome visuals, nice overall atmosphere! I liked how you tutorialize via level design in jumping part - is a nice touch (head booping the blocks). "Suspension" is just brutal)) Boss fight is manageable! Idea of 3 games in one - let's go! XD

jesusonwheels 2021-10-15 15:43

Overall, I loved the game. I appreciate the attention to level design in stage one to teach players how the break blocks works. You placed them in places the player would jump into naturally but would receive no consequences. I think the controls in stage 2 would have made more sense on controller, but were frustrating on keyboard.

2021-10-15 16:20

No web no play.

c1fr1 2021-10-15 17:14

Really nice assets, and I like that you implemented the theme in two different ways! My only gripes are with the balance of the levels. The left and right movement on the first level felt awkwardly slow, and the 2nd level had quite the difficulty spike since you had to pay attention to so many different things while constantly doing inputs. The third level was a satisfying conclusion though. Good job!

sleepystudios 2021-10-16 12:47

Loved the idea of putting together 3 minigames. Could definitely feel the NES influences. My favourite was Suspension, I thought the peddling mechanic was really clever. Nice work!

spicyshiba 2021-10-18 05:38

Excellent work! Everything seems so well thought out.

ldjq 2021-10-21 20:05

This game is very polished.

I love the way colour is used here, and the variety of music is impressive.

I enjoyed the minigames. Particularly because each one had its own best strategy.

My favorite was Suspension, so I'm going to talk more specifically about it below:

I really liked the controls. They definitely captured the feeling of pedaling a bike.

It took me many retries to finish due to the difficulty. Which is good and bad: losing because I messed up the controls felt correct, and made it more fun as I got better at the controls, but losing because I didn't have time to react was frustrating.

The other issue was the randomness: sometimes I would be put in an impossible situation where not dying would be hard even with more flexible controls.

Overall I really liked the Suspension minigame. It was difficult in both a good and bad way.

potatolain 2021-10-21 20:21

I unfortunately barely missed rating this due to the cutoff, but I wanted to comment anyway. I really like what you did with the graphics here - it looks fantastic! As others also mentioned, I had a bit of trouble with the controls and couldn't get past the second level - I gave up after maybe 15-20 tries. The fixes described in an earlier comment seem like they would make a world of difference there.

I really liked how the first stage worked - the block breaking mechanic worked nicely and was just the right level of challenge. (I also appreciate that you put checkpoints between each stage)

You definitely nailed the retro aesthetic in a lot of ways - thanks for a great entry!
