This was so fun, and a nice new take on this type of puzzle game that I haven't seen before! Nice job with the level design and difficulty curve on this, it felt really good

mhykah 2020-04-21 04:27

This was an amazing game, I thoroughly had a lot of fun! The game was very well tutorialised and the puzzles were well designed! Although the push/pull mechanics were unique, they were very intuitive. Although I didn't use it, giving an option for unlimited moves was a nice touch too. The music was great and the sound effects were satisfying. One thing is that I was always confused about which button was push and which was pull so I often wasted moves pressing the wrong button. It might be nice to have some sort of reminder somewhere. An undo button would also be greatly appreciated! It's too bad that I didn't get to finish the game because I was stuck on some levels (in a good way!) but I'll be back to challenge it again. Amazing job!

gal-afik 2020-04-21 04:32

This is dripping with polish! While I didn't enjoy the puzzles as much as I'd hoped (I'm too tired to think after programming for 72 hours), I really like the concept and wish this was a full game with more mechanics.

hamzeh 2020-04-21 12:25

Had a lot of fun and the visuals are just perfect, I can't imagine anything better for the style of the game, it doesn't stay true to the theme but I don't see this as a problem, great game overall.

kwaku 2020-04-21 12:41

Since this is unity, could you publish web too? I tried installing Linux version but it wont start for me for some reason.

niels 2020-04-21 12:45

Fun game overall, actually quite hard haha. I love your main menu screen. I actualy had some wows when I figured out the mechanics (with the explanation in your level). For me some levels took too much time to figure out.

theaidency 2020-04-21 12:45

The puzzles were amazing and the mechanic was really cool, loved the new take on block puzzles. Well done!

teo-miklethun 2020-04-21 12:59

Fantastic level design and a great mechanic. I'd recommend removing the move count entirely, or perhaps only unlock it after the game is won without it.

ryannielson 2020-04-21 13:40

@teo-miklethun I thought about removing the move limit entirely, but I thought that'd just mean it didn't even get close to matching the theme so I decided to keep it around and provide the option to disable it on the title screen.

ryannielson 2020-04-21 13:50

@kwaku Unfortunately I decided to use Unity's HDRP for this project and it doesn't look like it supports Web export. Sorry. If I have time I'll try to look into why the Linux version won't run, I'm just using the default build set-up for it.

nectherlouie 2020-04-21 15:25

Simple, Minimal, To the point. I like it. Not much I can say because it looks like you can fully developed this and release it, if you plan to do so of course. Refinements maybe needed though, I'm sure you wanted to refine some of the stuff. Add more levels, Do refinements, Test level pacing and you have a puzzle game that you can release.

But it does not come close to the theme for the jam though, which is ok since we all need some pressure to release something. :sunglasses:

r3d3r 2020-04-21 15:33

*Brain.exe* not working you really have tickled my brain to think. I love it! so minimal and straightforward, thank you for the game, Hope to see more updates in the future :D

beavergames 2020-04-21 18:48

Gamer.exe shutting down.

Power off.

It's an awesome game. Its really simple, but I really liked the graphics. Its a good type of puzzle game. I'm not really into puzzle games, I'm more of the action and simulation type, but it was still awesome.

casual-dutchman 2020-04-21 21:11

Controls are simple, art is simple, puzzles get harder. I love puzzle games, so I really enjoyed yours as well. A lot of levels needed my brain to work at full capacity, but I managed. Very nice

trexxak 2020-04-21 21:56

this is a finished product! I feel like if you were to give the cube the narrative of "it needs to go to green or it will die" it actually fits the theme quite nicely, no need to overcomplicate THINGS :D

Had a blast playing it, though I did start out having a headache already and your game didn't help my problem :D thanks for letting me play u_u

dummydojo 2020-04-22 03:21

Interesting puzzle mechanic. Definitely can see it being build on. I just found the puzzles too difficult. It already took me awhile to get through one of the last tutorial levels. Balancing puzzle games is understandably hard though, so good job jam overall.

geckoo1337 2020-04-22 05:15

Sokoban ++ Yes! Another puzzle game with colored cubes. I thought that I was the only man on earth who like it :) I love puzzle games and I am always searching a new gameplay or mechanic so as to create something new. You did. Bravo. The main gameplay is really interesting - easy to understand, but hard to master. The main aesthetic is a little bit to dark for me and I would like to select levels. Restart from the first each time, it is a little bit frustrating. However I loved your project. Respectfully, it doesn't fit with the theme as expected, but why not - you are free to do what you want. I had fun playing it and I want to solve each level. Thank you for your entry. Well done ++

oqlqo 2020-04-22 05:17

I really dig this twist. Sokoban is hard enough, but pulling boxes at the same time really brings a new perspective! Great job!

harry-alissavakis 2020-04-22 07:56

Deceptively simple-looking game! The puzzle mechanics here are actually pretty novel and interesting! You could easily expand this into a full-length thing!

keybol 2020-04-22 10:03

I like how you invented a new type of puzzles. I can't brute force a solution which means it's a really a well crafted puzzle. It's unique and at the same time it feels familiar so players will be able to think of ways to solve the level from his past knowledge of sliding blocks, Rubik's Cube. I didn't like the controls Q and E it works ok, but may be there something better to use? The music fits well, it's not distracting, and I was enjoying the audio while playing the game so there's no need to mute it and play another music if choose to.

stanlkm 2020-04-22 10:04

New and nice puzzle mechanic!

fis 2020-04-22 11:49

this game is quite difficult - nice!

btw: the shaders on the linux version seem a bit odd in comparison to the screenshots provided

displacement.png

ryannielson 2020-04-22 12:02

@fis Hmm, that's very odd. Unity HDRP is what I used and it's fairly new so perhaps there's an underlying issue there. I'll try to hop over to my Linux partition some time soon and try to figure out what's up. Thanks for the heads up.

reid-willis 2020-04-22 12:19

I had a lot of fun completing this game. Really made you think a bit, especially once moves became a limited resource. The 3D graphics aren't really necessary, and I could see this being a very attractive minimalist 2D mobile game. I would play the crap out of something like that!

webox 2020-04-22 12:42

Hey this a neat game!! Very well thought levels, which is really hard to do during a jam, when the clock is ticking the fun/challenging ideas don't seem to show up. I don't think you really went for theme, maybe your ideas keep the blue box alive?. It reminded me to a physical game I used to have when I was a child, IDK the name in English but it's this one:

juego-trabado-ruibal-solitario-ingenio-fichas-la-plata-myuj-D_NQ_NP_680445-MLA28231169769_092018-F.jpg

The idea was to remove the red tile moving the others. Maybe other piece shapes could be a nice addition to your game too. (Maybe there are on the final levels, I only made it to thesecond Lvl with buttons)

Overall is a solid entry, you did a great job!!

ryannielson 2020-04-22 13:01

@webox The theme integration was keeping the blue block alive, or keeping your progress alive in the later levels where you have the action limit. If you hit the limit, everything is reset and you lose all progress.

The multiple block size is a great idea. That would really amp up the difficulty and the types of puzzles I could make. Thanks!

noamraz 2020-04-22 13:52

Cool Game! Like The Game Design! I was Really Needed To think about What I Need To Do, Good Luck!

mickgerritsen 2020-04-22 15:52

I liked the game very much! You made very good use of this single mechanic. Especially the level design is what eventually makes this so great. It doesn't really fit the theme well though. And sometimes I was confused about what button pulls and what button pushes. But good job

tpzombie 2020-04-22 16:54

I don't see the theme here  but it's relly well designed anyway. Great job!

nodlehs 2020-04-22 21:01

Well done, I have a love/hate relationship with these types of puzzles :)

ursagames 2020-04-23 04:13

Hello! Your game was played during my stream!

And then look in my latest videos and find your game being play (after the current stream ends) https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames/videos

2020-04-23 12:25

Challenging game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/POu9WBNgI08

ryannielson 2020-04-23 14:27

@ursagames Thanks for spending so much time playing it, I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed Displacement. It's funny how different people can get stuck on different puzzles. It makes designing and ordering the levels really tough.

syudzius 2020-04-23 15:27

Good game! I'm not very good with these types of puzzles, but I liked the push and pull mechanic :D The graphics are also very simple and nice, and I like the way the level floats a little, looks relaxing. Great work!

gurkenlabs 2020-04-23 15:27

I could sink countless hours into this kind of brain workout :) I think the puzzles were well designed, but I had to disable the turn limit to beat the game. Everything looks polished and the mechanics work well. All in all, very solid game!

tmpvoid 2020-04-23 15:28

Damn this gets tricky fast! I'm not sure that the turn limit adds anything to the game other than frustration, at least without a "turn undo". Also at least on mac, this was surprisingly laggy :/ The concept seems solid though!

hacktrout 2020-04-23 15:55

I thought that this was a clever core mechanic of what could be a great puzzle game, but it misses an undo button that this game could do with. I say this becuase having the movement cost action points only makes it so any moves done to think(at least how I play puzzle games) makes it so even if you solved the puzzle you mightn't reach the exit. Great puzzle game nonetheless!

marco-le-van 2020-04-23 16:11

Awesome mechanics, really challenging and fun, I didn't quite understand the link with the theme though. Overall a great polish game!

finn-tr 2020-04-23 16:12

Really enjoyed this game! Concept is simple but get really challenging, love the art style and sound design! Great job!

michael-horst 2020-04-23 16:29

Excellent game! I really enjoy Sokoban-style puzzles. It was very cleanly made, and I liked the small camera wobble and non-direct world space UI to give it a bit of stylistic flair. The mechanic to push and pull everything in a direct line from yourself is very creative and fits the puzzle style incredibly well.

I was okay with the turn limit, since it was pretty generous on most puzzles. However, I would have liked to see it be a little less punishing for dead moves. If you're against a wall and try to move into the wall, or if you attempt to push/pull when there's nothing to push/pull, it still counts as a move. On that note, I wish the push/pull controls would have been more distinct in some way. E and Q don't inherently convey either, and even by the time I finished the game I could never keep the two straight. This wouldn't really matter, except that the turn limit punishes it.

That said, it wasn't enough to detract significantly from the game for me. One of my favorites that I've played so far, though I'm partial to good puzzle games. Well done!

emre-tahtali 2020-04-23 16:35

i like the minimal design of the game :D it's really sad when people just don't see your entire game when you make a puzzle game because they quit game after trying a little and failing :c

ryannielson 2020-04-23 16:51

@michael-horst Thanks for the feedback. I actually have a note in my Github repo to make moves that result in no changes not take away from the action count. Probably gonna fix that this evening.

**Edit:** I went ahead and fixed that issue. So now the counter won't decrease unless your action actually moves the player or a block. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

giulia 2020-04-24 20:42

Hi @ryannielson! I'm having some troubles in playing on a mac...everything is very slow and sometimes the view disappears. Apart from that I like very much your game concept and I find it challenging. I love puzzle games!

ryannielson 2020-04-24 22:25

@giulia Weird. I tried it on a MacBook earlier today and besides the initial slow load it seemed to work fine. Not sure there’s much I can do about that sorry.

haoro 2020-04-27 01:25

Nice game ! I really like how it looks !(did you use sprite or shader for the blocs ?) Had a lot of fun thinking through all the levels, hope there were more !

ryannielson 2020-04-27 09:41

@haoro Im glad you enjoyed it. The game is 3d and the blocks just use the basic Unity HDRP lit shader with a few tweaks to color, roughness, and metallic to give them some shininess.

reece-geofroy 2020-04-27 15:55

Great work my friend. Simple, but polished!

rodrigo-denubila 2020-04-27 16:24

Really nice and challenging game. I didn't think this fits to the theme, but it was fun to play.

natpat 2020-04-27 20:38

You've really polished this! Slight wobble making the game feel dynamic, slightly diegetic UI, simple but effective graphics and fitting music and sound effects. It didn't fit the theme at all, which is disappointing. I finished it, and it made me think, but overall, I felt it was lacking as a puzzle game. I feel like the best puzzle games have two things: a great "a-ha!" moment, when everything clicks into place, and satisfying execution of that plan. I don't feel like this game hit either of those. I never felt like I was creating a plan - I felt like I was moving blocks around until they were in a shape I could see the solution from, and the controls were slightly frustrating (no undo, Q/E getting mixed up), meaning I felt relived more than satisfied when I finished a puzzle. The turn counter is an interesting way to try and counter "bumbling" to a goal, but I think the space of the game is too large to work out a solution exactly and therefore how many turns a solution will take, so you end up executing it anyway and praying you have enough turns. The lack of undo makes it more frustrating, as a wrong use of Q or E means you lose two turns, and might have to start again from the beginning. The last level was the most interesting - working out how to manoeuvre around a tight space, with blocks in your way, and only a few places to move them. I think you could either - remove the turn counter, make the levels big and confusing, and let players fiddle around until they manage to puzzle things out. Enjoyment there could come from progressing through the large level, and making small incremental gains - or, make the levels smaller, tighter, and have a "perfect" solution that is the only one allowed by the turn counter. That way, the enjoyment is working out exactly which way to solve the puzzle. An undo button would also work wonders - there's nothing fun about messing up late into a solution because you hit the wrong key and having to restart.

Sorry for the long post, and I hope it's not too critical!

firesplash-entertainment 2020-04-30 19:37

Can I please have the link for buying this on steam?

I loved the game. Simple, yet challenging! I would just add a bit more like blocks which have alimited abmount ov moves or blocks that can disappear etc. and polish it a bit, for example add some chiptune music, vfx and so on. I'd buy it. For sure.

Nice job!

We streamed the gameplay live on our twitch channel (https://www.twitch.tv/firesplashtv), watch out for the highlights of todays VOD ;)

ryannielson 2020-05-01 01:34

@firesplash-entertainment I can always enable donations on Itch.io just for you haha.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and I appreciate you playing it on stream. I had a few ideas for other types of mechanics or blocks, but I decided to keep it as focused as possible for the jam so I could explore the push/pull/move mechanic.

Thanks for the feedback!

sandra-martinez 2020-05-04 15:50

The simple mechanics and clear graphics make this game a plus. A pretty challenging puzzle game for me. But I'm still not clear how is this related to "Keep It Alive" tho...

postmeridiangames 2020-05-05 14:21

Simple yet fun mechanics. The game feels quite polished which makes playing the game pleasant !

sunblast 2020-05-05 15:13

Nice game had a lot of fun with it, the turn limiter made for a good challange! The only thing I felt was missing was a undo mechanic.

tobiasw 2020-05-11 18:21

I have a soft spot for LD puzzle games, especially because there are so few good ones - and yours definitely fits. I don't think I've seen this mechanic anywhere else yet. I liked the design of the levels, even though some felt a bit fillery and more "try to *push* your way through" instead of "try to *think* your way through". And it looks good as well. Great job!

convg 2020-05-12 16:47

Really cool game. Very nice mechanics and polish. Good job!

gameovermexico 2020-05-12 19:13

Excellent game many levels, very good design.

fenno-boomgaarden 2020-05-12 19:32

Pretty difficult cool puzzle game Love the mechanic, pretty cool idea Nicely extended with switches and stuff!

joe40001 2020-05-12 19:54

Great game, the only downside is it's too short. With these mechanics you could've made a bunch more levels. I think 10-15 would've been a good amount. (With a level counter on the side)

Either way. Fun stuff.
