Very good game ! Love your mechanics, it makes the game hard and interesting. Good Job on your LD, too.

cary-stanley 2018-08-14 02:38

Nice mechanic!! I like how the game builds up slowly in difficulty till you are able to solve levels that would have felt overwhelming when you first started.

retrospecter 2018-08-14 02:44

This game is awesome. Such a simple mechanic, but its done very well.

gwinnell 2018-08-14 12:26

I didn't understand the mechanics at first. I think it's because you start on Level *0* and that one forces you to die, and then puts you onto Level 1 which looks pretty much exactly the same!

After that hiccup, the progression was good and I got through all 11 (or, technically, 12) levels. At the end, my brain was trying to come up with the formula to always solve the level if you follow its rules... *brain explode*. Nice job!

P.S. Nice ladder sprite!

wongkongphooey 2018-08-14 21:08

Really nice game! When I played the first level I wasn't really expecting much, but it develops nicely into a really strategic game. Happy to have managed to figure out level 11, although it did take a while! Just the right length of game, not too fast, not too long either. Well done!

ithildin 2018-08-15 01:13

Thank you all for your feedback!

@gwinnell @wongkongphooey The first two levels were intended to act as a tutorial that taught players the basics of the game, but I ran out of time to polish that part and had to settle for the cheap last-minute addition of the 'it's a trap!' line. As a result it's true that they feel like a bland approach to level design, so thanks for staying for the rest of the game!

I would like to improve the graphics and nail that bit for a post-compo version.

Very nice puzzle game, good amount of levels too!

ryanjavanshir 2018-08-16 14:19

Wow this was great! My fav compo entry so far. A nice memory game with clean graphics and nice sfx.

johnnwfs 2018-08-18 00:33

Great little game - loved the old school sound effects and the game-play. Actually got through all the levels and it was nice to have a winner screen for once (can't seem to get through most of these games). Love the concept and appreciate the challenge!

troligtvis 2018-08-18 00:34

Fun little puzzle game :) Good work :)

shimage2 2018-08-18 01:00

I was stuck at level 5 but cleared somehow. Very nice puzzle with a simple rule. Great Work!

afroant 2018-08-18 03:02

Fun game! Brute forced some of the puzzles, but maybe I just picked up on the mechanics really easy :P Really liked the unconventional way the game started, too. Good job!

justinmullin 2018-08-18 21:00

Cool little puzzle - nice, clear, elegant mechanic without any unnecessary fluff. Gameplay was really smooth and fast, too, which I really appreciate for something like this. If I failed a puzzle I was able to retry quickly and fix my mistake. What's really cool about your presentation is I started to be able to feel out solutions at a glance, just intuitively, which is always a really cool feeling in a puzzle game. The sounds fit well with the lo-fi aesthetic without being disruptive. I don't usually push through to the end of puzzle games on here, but this was just the right length to show what you could do with it, without being forced on length. Really enjoyed it, thanks!

Nice little puzzle game - played til the lat level. I really liked the concept. You should consider working on this for longer.

rend 2018-08-19 18:16

Cool little puzzle, I reached level 7. The execution is simple but clean. My main complaint would be that the smallest state of a tile is misleading because the graphics let you think you can jump on it whereas you can't. There's not much difference with no tile at all, yet you visually communicate something different to the player (there's a tile). And I think that's misleading. But apart from it, nice entry.

purrfexionator 2018-08-20 22:41

Awesome game, I beat it! The concept was simple, but worked well, fit the theme, and made for some interesting puzzles. Difficulty curve isn't perfect, found some earlier puzzles to be far easier than some later puzzles, but overall a well designed experience that kept me occupied the whole way through. Well done!

blinkenlights 2018-08-21 18:19

An interesting and very challenging concept! Could do with a little polish, but all else is well!

lastleaf 2018-08-22 17:39

The puzzles are interesting! Overall it is a fun game with nice idea, and graphics fit it well. Great job! I would like to play more levels!

pkenney 2018-08-23 05:36

I beat it! This is a tight little game. The concept is clear and self-discoverable. The art and sound effects are a bit basic but have a good feeling of life to them. The controls are really tight. And the concept is introduced, then expanded on.

I liked how I would stop and think through the problem, decide on my path, and then hammer out the keystrokes. The game responded quickly and accurately as I was pretty rapidly smashing in my inputs, and it felt satisfying.

Really nice work!

rombus 2018-08-23 23:46

Yeah! The first game I can beat :P Really fun to play and cool sfx

Congrats on the entry!

wolfrug 2018-08-24 07:13

Nice work! Took me a little while to figure out the main mechanic (stepping on color makes all other pillars of the same color smaller), maybe because they were so few colors in the beginning (or I'm dumb). But once I figured it out it was quite a nice little puzzler. Finished it too, yay! So well done :)

demn 2018-08-24 09:23

Good and simple take of the theme. These kind of games never get old ;) it was quite entertaining to play ! You made a good job on the puzzles and the sound design, also on the animation (this little guy's happy face is rewarding enough :D !) I think the only thing missing would be some musics, but you probably ran out of time ! Good job for your game :)

silkworm-sweatshop 2018-08-24 22:40

Solid entry! Nice sense of progression and just the right amount of levels. Art does the job and even without music the sound effects have a satisfying feel to them. I always seem to enjoy these simple puzzle games during LD.

ithildin 2018-08-26 03:45

Hi again, thank you all for your feedback! Glad to read you've enjoyed it.

@RenD that's a great point, and you're right. At first I'd planned to add some animated tiles, but I left that for a later polish stage that didn't arrive. I've just submitted the first post-compo version with some visual improvements, one of them is that last tile state so it looks more dangerous to step on (still no animations, though).

@purrfexionator Yeah, that's possible, balancing is a challenge in itself.

@demn @silkworm-sweatshop Thanks! Yeah, I ran out of time for music. I tried to come up with something fitting, but went completely blank and time was running out, so I decided to drop it and add it to a post-compo version.

repusv 2018-08-26 09:05

Nice entry. Good Puzzle game! Even though it is quite easy (which I consider a good thing).

thewustache 2018-08-26 11:21

Great entry! It's a simple idea, but very well executed and intuitive. The difficulty progression is solid (there's a bit of a jump in the last few levels, but nothing unmanageable). It's confusing that you can't actually walk on the last stage of the tiles, but apart from that, the graphics communicate the game state very clearly, which is important for a puzzle game. The sounds fit the aesthetic well; as does the lack of background music for that matter! Excited to see what comes from this.

king-kujito 2018-08-26 18:38

Veery good. Enjoyed it

mrnyarlathotep 2018-08-26 22:15

really solid compo entry - exactly the type of entry that could easily be expanded into a full game post jam

rahim-pxr 2018-08-27 00:49

Nice game, I hope to see more updates and improvments sooner. If you don't bother take a look at our game when we focused on Graphics and visuals and see the results that we got: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/spacelab-42

conk 2018-08-27 13:36

Love the concept! Levels are nice but perhaps in the wrong order as I found the middle levels a lot harder than a few of the later ones. Although you can make of that what you will as everyone has different experiences :stuck_out_tongue:

Graphics and audio fit nicely together although a few sound effects were a bit loud and high pitched (something I've made the mistake of doing in past game jams) which can get a little annoying after a while. Controls were responsive and it's a great twist on the theme! Great job overall, well done

omiya-games 2018-08-28 23:19

I thought the game was pretty fun. Figuring out what path kept the player from jumping onto 3 of the same colored platforms was entertaining. Personally, I think the levels could have been designed a bit better so the game conveyed its rules a little better. For example, start with a level where one can beat immediately with 2 stepping stones, then have a level with 3 (it's a trap!) to make it clear the 3rd stepping stone is the thing the player needs to pay attention to. From there, introducing new colors can be done more smoothly. Overall, enjoyed it.

aeveis 2018-08-29 03:22

I had fun! I was a bit confused at why there were different color blocks at first, but after dying a couple times I got it.

The puzzle design is interesting - I could see there being potentially multiple answers but it felt like there was usually only one.

I think introducing more colors later was nice, but the game might be easier with more colors, so maybe starting with that before paring down and having more limited solutions or logic-y puzzles. It might help with some of the progression as well - a player can see all the blocks of that color get smaller, and then step on the next color and see those blocks get smaller, and so forth just so it's really clear in the beginning. Then when you start to switch it up with stepping on small blocks first, the player can see, oh ok it doesn't matter what size it is as long as it's not the smallest size and it'll always decrease the rest of the sizes.

I could see different variations of the mechanics or special colors as well that make the block step differently (perhaps it disappears and reappears, perhaps it has a certain pattern, etc) that could really increase the complexity of the puzzles. Another suggestion would be to visually differentiate the color blocks as well so it's more clear they're in a group together (it would also increase accessibility with anyone with color blindness). nice job!

Fun puzzle game! Managed to complete it and it was a lot of fun figuring it out. I did feel like sometimes the less obvious path was always the one that led me to victory. So I breezed through some levels doing that. Overall really solid entry, Great job!

andrei9 2018-09-03 13:12

I liked the Graphics, and the Gameplay was fun, Nice Game.
