This is an amazingly excellent first two-thirds of a game, but either there's a key instruction I'm missing, or it's not finished. No matter what items I get, the timer sticks at 00:01 and I don't know how to exit the level.

Minor bugs: - what does the compass/map icon do? The one below the backpack. I couldn't figure out how to use it. - The grabby arm leaves a couple of teal pixels behind when it retracts

Despite this, I love the music, I love the concept, and I love what you've got so far!

supernapie 2018-08-18 11:56

I love that you can use both the fetching and throwing of items at the same time. Minor point is there doesn't seem to be a way to replenish health. The quest items were also a little to hard to find. Running out of time was not fun and maybe there is no need to run out of time, if the fights are challenging enough. But the graphics and sound were polished very well and the controls for the movement and attacks feel very natural. Some good team work here!

ohmmus 2018-08-20 03:06

Props for using Phaser! I liked the room transitions and the eventual surprise I get if there's skeletons in the next room. Are the skeletons destructible? I thought they would be judging from the game's description above, but I seemed to have thrown most of my stuff at those guys and they just flash red for a little bit then fade back to white. I might have missed it in the tutorial/instructions, I'll check again.

mapedorr 2018-08-20 03:19

@pace We're glad you liked it. We already fixed some bugs in the current version, you can play it again if you want.

mapedorr 2018-08-20 03:26

@supernapie You could be right about the timer, so we'll try it. It is good to know you liked the core mechanic of the game and that you think it is challenging. As a team, this is our first game, and comments like yours, encourage us to continue working together.

mapedorr 2018-08-20 03:28

@ohmmus The skeletons aren't destructible, but you can put them in the backpack. In future releases of the game, this will make sense.

tiberiusuciu 2018-08-20 05:25

Wow the art is sooooo good :o very well done! And the little details to the sound effects are also very well thought out. Good job!

tinykidtoo 2018-08-20 05:27

I really liked the amazing art and music. Really fitting for a fun dungeon crawler like this. I didn't find much of a use for throwing things at the skeletons since they could not die. I was also was unable to put them in my backpack as you suggested. I also wished that there was a notification each time you picked up a quest piece. This would let me focus on the skeletons and exploration over the inventory.

pnghasemi 2018-08-20 11:21

I wonder why the rate of this game is so low! It's well polished and quite fun. I think you should be making a full game out of it and it would feel better to play on mobile devices.

mapedorr 2018-08-20 16:47

@tiberiusuciu Thanks for the flattering words.

awesomealliterationalliance 2018-08-20 21:22

That was really great! Nice idea to subvert the theme a little. ^^ The mood and the overall feel of the game are pretty neat! very polished game for 72 hours. Definetly one of the best i've seen so far in this Ludum Dare!

drums 2018-08-20 21:28

I loved how just about every part of this game was random. It felt very smooth and looked great. I sadly couldn't find everything after several attempts. Not sure if I just sucked or it's difficult from the start. I loved the skeletons and wanted to see more creepy monsters! Nice job all around.

mapedorr 2018-08-20 21:29

@tinykidtoo Thanks for the kind words. What you mentioned about the skeletons seems like a bug, they should go into the backpack if they are stunned. Giving players feedback when they found a quest item is a good idea, we'll try it.

mapedorr 2018-08-20 21:33

@pnghasemi Who knows, life is hard, I guess. We're planning to continue working on it for a couple of weeks, so stay tuned in any of the pages where it was published to get notified.

stefan-jovanovic 2018-08-20 21:37

Nice game that really fits the theme well! This is the first game on the jam that I saw is using Phaser engine, and I'm really glad that someone built their game in it, even though I am Unity user myself. Keep up the good work!

agar3s 2018-08-20 21:46

Thanks @stefan-jovanovic! We took a lot of time thinking about how to implement the theme, at the end we found funny to do in the opposite way. Also, We are building a boilerplate for phaser3 to speed up our new games: https://github.com/agar3s/phaser3-jam-boilerplate/

shakedimus 2018-08-20 22:11

I liked the game play and it felt satisfying using the grapling hook. I do think it will get boring after some time but it's a nice idea and game overall. Graphics and music were also very good in setting the mood.

purrfexionator 2018-08-20 23:09

An awesome game, despite being quite difficult. I did wish there was some way to permanently kill enemies, and instead just have more enemies spawn as time goes on. Also, I wish there were some visual indication of if an object is cursed, normal, or magic, rather than having to look at the inventory. I'm also not a fan of having to look at the inventory to know what I need. Despite all of that, this is still a really solid and enjoyable game.

lost-dutchman-software 2018-08-21 02:16

Its a great take on the theme and the graphics are fantastic!

rend 2018-08-21 07:46

Really good art and animations. It's also impressive to have made a procedural dungeon in such short time. I think the base idea is really interesting but I didn't understand how to hit or kill the enemies. Some objects thrown at them seem to stun them, others didn't seem to have any effect. Maybe it was intended but it confused me a bit. Also, I guess the hook could be more interesting if it had more use (interactions on the level or on the enemies) because the game could be as fun without it right now, just passing on objects to collect them. But anyway, I enjoyed my playthrough and I think it's a good basis to build on it, congrats!

nam-nguyen 2018-08-21 08:22

Whow very innovative! I love the hook mechanic and the fact that you can put anything in your inventory. The quest system is really nice too. This seems like a complete game that can be released already. Great work!!

PS Found a bug that the skeleton still follows me when it's stunned, I think its a known bug to you guys, probably just a quick fix would do.

kubenexion 2018-08-21 11:38

Great game with really interesting hook'n shoot mechanic! Fun to play, good job!

matoux42 2018-08-21 11:57

Very cool, but too hard for me

barkergames 2018-08-22 01:05

I love the pixel art, nice work!

mapedorr 2018-08-22 04:26

@drums It is good to know you liked our game (is the first one we make as a team). We haven't balanced the difficult (not at least for the jam version). We'll keep working on it, so other types of enemies and mazes are part of the plan.

mapedorr 2018-08-22 04:38

@stefan-jovanovic Yeah babeee! We're Phaser fans since version 2.x. And, of course, we're glad you liked how we used the theme.

mapedorr 2018-08-22 05:13

@shakedimus Thanks for your comment. We're working on making the game feel more like a rogue-like.

mapedorr 2018-08-22 05:33

@purrfexionator Thanks for your suggestions, we'll take them into account while keep working on the game.

mapedorr 2018-08-22 05:48

@lost-dutchman-software Thanks for the flattering words. We were worried about our take on the theme, and it is good to know that someone believes it is great.

mapedorr 2018-08-22 06:05

@rend Thanks for your comment and kind words about art and procedural generation (it was a great effort). After reading it, we've started to work on some design ideas for the hook.

mapedorr 2018-08-22 06:36

@nam-nguyen Thanks for your comment. We still have plans for the game, and we'll keep working on it for a couple of weeks. It is good to know you found that bug, we're going to work on it too.

capitals 2018-08-22 10:50

Hey, this is probably one of the best games I've played so far, well done! Great music, good design, nice graphics! The only thing i can possibly say to improve this is that to allow the player to adjust the control scheme, as I was playing on a mac computer.

arctic-allosaurus 2018-08-22 16:22

Very impressive! Loved the art, design and humor on this one :D Also the undying skeletons were good choice, I found the game's difficulty level was just right. Good job!

yami-no-tenshi-8 2018-08-22 21:26

Amazing ida, I really liked to play it, really nice realization and the gameplay works really well ! It's quite addictive ! Congratulations !

My only complaint will be that it seems that there is no difficulty increase during the game, so it could have been never ending

mccarlp 2018-08-24 04:47

I had fun, but it is hard to find the three items

sidewalksleeper 2018-08-24 12:18

A very enjoyable game! It gets a little tiring listening to bones rattling all the time :P Nevertheless, I think this is one of the more interesting concepts I've seen so far.

zahab-aq 2018-08-24 12:54

This is really enjoyable. One of the most fun games that I played this jam. I loved the graphics and the gameplay was smooth and fun. It is kind of hard to find the items in time but I take it more as a challenging mechanic than a con in the game. Overall a solid game.

mza 2018-08-24 14:48

I found myself being very engrossed in this game. It was a great game to play with fun mechanics. The only thing i noticed is that there was some repeptetive collision sounds when a skeleton walked towards a loot near a wall. This did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the game though.

danielblanco3d 2018-08-25 18:53

Excellent job! I love the graphic style, an amazing ludumdare game.

mapedorr 2018-08-26 22:00

@matoux42 Thanks. We'll work on the difficulty curve.

mapedorr 2018-08-26 22:03

@barkergames Thanks, we're glad you liked it.

mapedorr 2018-08-26 22:15

@capitals We're glad you liked our game. We'll take into account your suggestion.

mapedorr 2018-08-26 22:36

@arctic-allosaurus Thanks for your comment. We're glad you liked it.

mapedorr 2018-08-26 23:02

@yami-no-tenshi-8 Thanks. You're right about the difficulty. We'll work on that later because our idea is to create a rogue-like.

mapedorr 2018-08-26 23:27

@mccarlp We're glad you liked it.

rahim-pxr 2018-08-27 00:34

Nice game, I hope to see more updates and improvments sooner. If you don't bother take a look at our game when we focused on Graphics and visuals and see the results that we got: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/spacelab-42

logicon211 2018-08-27 00:42

I enjoyed my time as a grapple man

mapedorr 2018-08-27 01:04

@sidewalksleeper Thanks for the kind words. We're working on some improvements (audio included), so your comment will help us.

mapedorr 2018-08-27 01:07

@zahab-aq Thanks. And you're right, making hard to find the items is part of the mechanics.

mapedorr 2018-08-27 01:11

@mza We're happy to know you had that experience with our entry. We hope the update (which we're working on) improves the experience.

mapedorr 2018-08-27 01:12

@danielblanco3d Thanks for the kind words.

mapedorr 2018-08-27 01:27

@rahim-pxr Thanks. We'll play it, and we also hope to have an update soon.

@logicon211 That's awesome. Thanks for playing and leaving your comment.

jesterseraph 2018-08-27 01:43

This game was fabulous. Definitely a fun dungeon crawler with a theme I have never seen before. The introduction and tutorial to the game is really slick, the graphics are awesome, and the movement is very smooth.

Great work!

j-vid 2018-08-29 15:10

This game is really well done and a lot of fun. Controls work really well. Great use of the theme, too.

jonathan-lorenz 2018-09-04 12:20

I like the idea of crawling through a dongeon without having to kill anyone. It's a bit unexpected but it works! The game could use a mini map and a signal telling the player that he has completed the item list. Good concept, needs more digging. Good work!
