Very visually and aurally impressive! Good colors, nice effects and animations. It's a shame, then, that I couldn't get past the first level! A few invincibility frames couldn't have hurt. :smile:
@Scott-Steffes yeah for some reason chrome has been doing that for a lot of games from this site :/
The screenshaking, animation, and just whole system of movement really give a nice feel to the game. However, I think the slow horizontal movement and the lack of an invulnerability period after being hit makes the game overly difficult.
@impiaaa Thank you! And dang, haha I tried my best to thoroughly test the game but I really wanted to make the game as challenging as possible, yet still beatable. I guess it takes a bit of time to get used to each boss.
I love the colors, graphics and sound! After the title screen I'm in a room with what seems like a boss fight with difficulty off the charts! Couldn't get past it. Really solid game though! Top ratings.
Screen shake was a bit strong. Maybe make the player "immune" for a short time after being hit, or maybe I'm just really bad at playing :P
Very good game I must say! Brutally hard though.
@Distrait thanks!! I am glad you like it! To be honest that is the easiest boss of the 6 haha
@Pengyboz thanks!! did you actually beat a boss tho? haha nobody seems to be able to pass the first one
Awesome game!
I do agree the first boss is really difficult. Feels like you need really good jet efficiency to beat.
Also I found a bug on the second boss. After beating the second boss, the boss kept on rolling and the game never progressed to the next boss. Pressing restart restarted the game from the second boss as well.
Anyway great stuff.
Rated mood for 5, due to my rage at the inability to even pass the first boss. xD
Seriously though, this is a good entry. I liked the graphics and music quite a bit, though you do feel a bit slow for how punishing the boss(es?) is. The screen shake is also just a bit much for my tastes. I also question how these genres are even a little bit incompatible. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Overall, something to be proud of and I'm mad I couldn't get further. :smile:
@Potondo I fixed the bug! It was just a typo in a last minute change I made before publishing the game! Fortunately this type of bug-fix is allowed in the rules. I hope you try playing again!
Amazing visuals, very polished (that's what I value the most). Keep it up! :slight_smile:
@Hello1423 For some reason I thought that putting in temporary invulnerability after being hit would make the game too easy haha.
@bloodyaugust I believe in you! You have to flow with the bullets and dodge them, it becomes kind of subconscious after a bit. Thank you for the kind words!
@vilix64 Thank you! I spent a lot of time on the art.
@harry-light Haha the bug seems to be fixed!
Very fun game indeed. Beat all the bosses. I do think the first boss is actually the hardest boss funnily enough.
Also just to let you know I found another bug, though this is a lot more of an exception. Seems like the game crashed when you and the boss die at the same time. I really should have saved the exception error message but I unfortunately wasn't thinking. Sorry about that.
Anyway keep up the great work! This game is fantastic!
@Potondo Great, finally somebody who has beaten the game!! [Check out this gif of me annihilating the first boss rather quickly!](https://twitter.com/HarryLightGames/status/988174892259594240) I'm glad you enjoyed my game! That does sound like an odd bug, not one I have encountered in my testing! Do you remember which boss it happened with?
@harry-light I believe it happened on the first boss. Something to do with "oPlayer" being accessed. Sorry, the rest of the details eludes me unfortunately.
@Potondo Interesting, well I'm glad it was only on the first boss and didn't set you back too far!
This is really cool a bit hard but still cool
Certainly a funny game. Gave up at harder version of 2nd boss. Really liked the artstyle and the "feel" how the game played.
Sure is challenging. Couldn't even get past the first boss, or maybe I just suck at bullet hells. Pretty fun though, and visually pleasing.
@Yippiez Thank you!
@Tutti-Ankka hey at least you made it further than a lot of people commenting here! Haha thank you!
@Lecalat You have to be persistent! Also thank you, I am glad you like the art!
How can you rate a game ? please :)
That was great :) ! With it's Dark Souls difficulty level, juicy sounds and screen shake and awesome pixel art/ color palette, Jet Boy is a favorite of mine from the jam so far ! cheers !
Fun little shooter. I don't see how there are 2 incompatible genres here? :confused: The screen shake is good, but after a while it gets too much. I cant get past the first enemies after trying 10-20 times. Seems to difficult. The art looks really good, good colour palette :thumbsup: Like the cheerful music :fox:
Awesome (but hard) game. Feels really good to control. Graphics are great too!
Excellent feel of the controls, shooting and getting shot! xP Very hard, but doable if effort is spent. No confusion as to what controls to use or what to do. :) I got to the second patrolling roller bot.
really really hard but its gets some cool controls and good feedbacks
@Noa-Calice Thank you for the kind words!! I am glad you enjoyed the game!!
@Persijn Maybe the difficulty of this game will help you understand how the genres are incompatible? I am glad you like the music and art, thank you!
@SMILEY-4 Thank you! I am glad you appreciate the effort I put into this!
@PuddleOfWater Thank you for the feedback!! Also that is great, you got further into the game than most people!
Great game overall. First boss was the hardest for me too. It seems to me, that all of 3 genres are pretty compatible :)
There's a potential for a great game in here, but I got turned off by the huge difficulty curve. Great mechanics, great music, appealing graphics... but I can't get past the third boss. If you have the time, I'd really like to see an easier mode of this game; like, throw in some invincibility frames and increase the amount of health?
@Blight-Radiance Thank you! I think that with some work any two genres can be compatible!
@niterich Hey thanks, that's a good idea!
@harry-light After thinking for quite a bit about the theme, I can only agree with you! Almost any genre combination sounds pretty compatible to me :smiley:
Way cool. The graphics are amazing.
@Swarrly Thank you!! I am glad you like it!
Honestly, the music and graphics are pretty amazing. They fit well together. The controls are tight and easy to use. However, (and I'm sure that many people have said this already) the first boss was much too difficult. It took more attempts to beat the first boss than the second boss.
I really liked the game. The graphics are awesome, and the mechanics feel great (minus a lack of invincibility frames after taking damage). The only thing I would say is that the difficulty curve is a bit steep. Although I beat the first few enemies, and thoroughly enjoyed the second battle, I really felt a lack of control of how I won with the first enemy. Other than that, a fantastic idea for an interesting game.
It's a good idea,and the control is smooth,but it's too hard to me,LOL
The graphics and music worked pretty well and it was clear the focus was on the mechanics. The first level felt too difficult, but otherwise it was a pretty good experience.
The controls were super tight and the movement felt really good throughout, and I liked the graphical style and music as well. I was really enjoying the game but sadly I hit an error on level 4:
___________________________________________ ############################################################################################ FATAL ERROR in action number 1 of Create Event for object oBoss3Die:
Unable to find any instance for object index '2' name 'oPlayer' at gml_Object_oBoss3Die_Create_0 ############################################################################################ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- stack frame is gml_Object_oBoss3Die_Create_0 (line -1) called from - gml_Object_oBoss4_Step_0 (line -1) -
And despite this I still really enjoyed the game!
The first boss was definitely too hard, once I beat that one it wasn't that hard to beat the rest.
It was fun to play, great job. However, it didn't really 'feel' like a bullet hell. It felt like I was constantly circle-strafing and using cover, neither of which are really bullet-hell gameplay at all. An excellent platformer/boss rush though!
@benskca thank you so much for the bug report! Also thank you for playing!
@notgreat thank you!
Challenging games are my favorites and this one is one of those difficult games. Took me couple tries to get pass the first part but it was fun!
Couldn't get past the first enemy. Super well crafted though, congrats!
@WarticWare Thanks! Glad you had fun!
Really difficult and fun game. I wouldn't say the genres are really incompatible, but really everything about this game works. Super polished. Great job!
Game is framerate dependent, but game is really fun.
A little bit difficult for my taste, but really fun and enjoyable. The controls are well placed (left click shoot and right click jetpack, really made it easy to move around the level). I managed to get to the 4th boss. Really god job :ok_hand:
Really difficult, I feel a tutorial boss before the first would be helpful for getting used to jetpacking around, but otherwise an excellent game. The controls were smooth. The 4-color palette is utilized very well and the music was top notch.
@Strato Thank you!
@Merrol Thank you! You made it further than a lot of people who commented. Haha
Awesome, I love the pixel art! I was much better after I hooked up my mouse to my laptop lol. Now that I've rated it I'll try out ver. 1.1. Good job!
Awesome job! Loved it! The pixel art is great!
Really well made. Had lots of fun playing it, probably will be playing in my free time, don't know how well it works with the theme, but the theme was terrible any.
Ahhh this game is addicting and I enjoy the difficulty a lot. I was able to get the 5th boss before I had to stop myself. I also loved the visual style and music.
Great job this game is a ton of fun!
ohhhhhhh my god this was SO hard. But it had JETPACKS and shooting with leads at moving targets. So the old Tribes player in me had to try to step up, and I gave it a serious effort.
I thought I would never even get past the first boss. But after a lot of experimenting and many many many many tries I finally beat him. Fortunately the next few bosses were SLIGHTLY less difficult. Let's call the three bosses spinner, roller, and smiler. I beat each of them, and then I beat spinner 2. But I ran out of steam after losing many many times to roller 2.
Funnily, spinner was hardest for me, then roller, and simley was pretty easy. But that may be the tribes thing: smiler was about leading your shot more than dodging, and I just summoned my old chaingun skills.
I was upset that I didn't get even an instant of invulnerability and eating a tripleshot could end me instantly. But honestly I think given this game's brutality, I'm okay with that.
I had to dig deep, as this is more execution difficulty than I normally engage with, but there were three excellent aspects of the game that made me want to do it: first there is the very well done aesthetic of informative and appealing graphics and sound; second the controls are very tight so it's all my fault; and third there is a pattern to be deduced with each boss and so it is as much of a puzzle as it is an execution test.
Every now and then a superhard execution LD comes along that has the package to make me buckle down and this was one of those rare games. Well done!
Really good game feel. The polish ties it well together. Pretty difficult, pretty fun!
For my sanity, I forever thank-you for not making it so you have to start over from the beginning when you die! Haha. Addicting, and stressful, everything a game should be! Well done.
Hahah I cant even get past the first guy. I love that its hard though I'll probably play this a few more times.
Really liked the game! The i-frame shield (1.1 update) definitely made it easier and a bit more possible to complete the game (finally beat it after it was updated... in 1.0 I got stuck on the second version of the rolling boss).
As others said, the controls feel great! It's got a lot of polish, and the effort put in is obvious (for this game, that's a good thing). I really like the idea of each boss getting more difficult each time you fight them. The phases of the bosses are very well done, and the sound indications are perfect! The art is really cool and fits the game perfectly. The simplistic color scheme works wonders!
One suggestion I think I could make would be a death screen (or just simply a pause button) so that there's a bit more of a break after you die so you can rest your hands if necessary.
When I was looking through the games from the contest, Jet Boy caught my eye immediately. When I saw it was a combination of BulletHell, Platformer, and BossRush, I was sold and downloaded it immediately.
TLDR; Superb for a game jam game!
Smooth game-play and great art! I had fun playing this. The fact that you can jump right back into the action helps offset the difficulty of this game. Well done on your submission!
1st these are not really incompatible genres. That aside the game is very good.The patterns might be too simple but considering the amount of bosses you made I'd say it's ok. Also, I would prefer that the game ends instead of looping.
Really enjoyed this one! The overall feel seems polished the controls are amazing. And retro style is just so well captured. Animations and screen shaking everytime you get hit just makes it really dynamic. Good job. Although for me the game was just too hard, i couldn't get through first turret. I wish the progression would be less of a steep curve to let players learn the mechanics first and beat couple of enemies first, then get to a boss fight. Otherwise the game is really impressive!
The art is fantastic! The music is very good. I love screenshake (could I have a plugin in visual studio that does screenshake by typed letter), but when it comes to a game where you need to deflect bullets, it is very important that you know where your character is exactly. I died several times for the same boss because I could not divert from the shots, because of the screenshots that occur when I shoot.
Anyway, I believe you have a diamond chest in your hands, and I would like to see a post-jam version of it :heart:
take a look on my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/vector-rabbits-slayer
I love the pixel art and the game aesthetics. I had fun playing this game. Great entry.
@Probe31 Thank you! Glad you had fun!
@thiagowaw Thank you!! You are too kind!
Game looks great and controls are mostly fine too (took me a while to get used to the jetpack) I found two things that bothered me the most: the screenshake and the music. The first one it just feels like a lot when you get hit, so much that I would pretty much lose all references and get insta-hit almost again. The music while it was cool was too short of a loop so after dying for like the tenth time in the first boss I just started hating that voice. Other than that maybe the character collider felt too big for a danmaku but I get that's okay for the plataforming factor and the first boss felt kind of frustating, specially since the second one was way too easy. Nonetheless I had to keep playing and spent like 40 minutes to make it all the way to the fifth boss so that's awesome. Great job! :D
If you find the time take a look at my game, I could surely use some advice https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/nanashi Thanks!
Sorry, man, but this game is impossible to play for me. Can't beat even first turret. Jatpack is hard to control and too less amount of fuel. Visualy looks goods, music goods too =)
@Yack-Sebblen Thank you!!
@Gabe-A Thanks!! Also, just so you know, I released a post jam update with brief invincibility after getting hit! Maybe give that a go!
@JeffChen Thanks! I just released an update that makes it a little bit easier, you get a shield after being hit. Maybe you will enjoy it more now!
@Kaarel Thank you!! I just released an update making it a bit easier, maybe try it out!
@palsina Thank you! Yeah unfortunately I've heard this a lot, but I just updated the game lowering the difficulty a bit! Give it a shot!
@Kaiomoi Thank you! Did you experience any frame-delay while playing?
@fashionbatman Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
@Gizmolo Thank you! Yeah it is definitely a KB+Mouse game haha!
@Bruce Thank you! I appreciate the feedback!
@OmnipotentIndie Thank you! Yeah I was a bit unhappy with the theme at first, but reading it further the description said you can combine "unlikely" genres, not just incompatible ones! So I figured this was a bit unlikely!
@Dribix You were so close!!! Haha there are only 6 bosses in this game! Thank you so much for the feedback! I have just updated the game so maybe give it another shot with v1.1?
@pkenney I love Tribes!! I didn't even notice the similarity until you mentioned it just now! I guess all those shazbots have been so ingrained in my subconscious that it was bound to surface at some point! Thank you so much for the feedback!
@Diego-Escalante thank you so much!!
@DoctorMozart You are welcome haha! I love a difficult game, but what I hate the most is replaying what you have already beaten! Also thank you so much for playing!
@pcoridan Hey sorry to hear that! I want you to know I released an update to the game making it a bit easier, you have invulnerability after taking damage! Hope you give it a shot!
@Jakuts Thank you so much! I appreciate your feedback greatly!
@Darkphnx Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed my game!
@FabianLC Thank you!
@Redhatto Thank you so much you are very kind! You should try playing the new update v1.1 of the game, it makes it a bit easier!
@JSD Thanks, I will check out Nanashi right now!
@Harry-Light Ah there we go! I was able to beat all 6 bosses on the new version. The 5th boss was definitely the hardest boss for me. Again though really fun game!
@Dribix Awesome!
So hard but also so much fun! Very nice entry! Good job!
Man, extremely good game. First boss was the hardest one I guess. :D Later it was easier then before. It was the game from that ldjam i spent the most time in :D I felt so frustrated but had to bit another boss! :D Love the game! :D
@PapyKent Thank you very much! Glad you had fun!
@GameDevMumin Thank you! Wow I'm glad to hear you spent so much time playing!
Really nice! But veery very hard!
Agree with the rest that the 1st boss is the hardest for me (at least the first version). I got to boss 5 (or rather the 2nd variant of Boss 2).
Other than this difficulty spike, the entry is amazing, especially the music and how everyhing was 'juiced'. You've earned yourself a follower.
Intense and awesome game. I enjoyed the challenge, especially the 5th boss(the hardest in my opinion). I really got stuck on that and had to learn from my mistakes and come up with a strategy to beat it.In short, I was close to ragequitting, but because of the lack of checkpoints( my only criticism, even though it adds to the difficulty) I had to finish it. The music was fitting, but more tracks for variety would be great. Overall rage inducing and fun experience. Smooth and fast-paced gameplay. I don't know how many hours it took me to finish this, I somehow lost count while I was enjoying the game(2-4). It definitely was worth it. Would you kindly check out my teams' game? This was our first Ludum Dare and we appreciate all the feedback that we can get; https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/god-does-play-cards.
I found a bug regarding the last boss btw; https://imgur.com/a/5vGyBJk. If you stand on either of the two top platforms you are able to damage the boss, but it is unable to damage you.
Cool game. Got to the fifth boss before giving up. The graphics were sweet as was the audio. Some more variety for the bosses would have been great. Other than that good job
This is fantastic. I would love to play it again with a gamepad instead of keyboard and mouse controls.
I loved the gameplay and the art. The gameplay is very good. Congratulations!
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.
