Oh, I have been searching for a game like this!
Really good, wish there was some reason aside from score to pick up the gold.
Love the sounds the enemies make when they move. Really good :D
(I would really like something like this to my phone, hint hint)
Really nice simplification of roguelikes! I also loved the animation for going down the stairs.
cool twist and nice old-school vibe
I really liked this, the opening music was really fun. Took me a sec to get the hang of it and remember the controls, and I agree with @oskarolausson about the gold pickups.
Good game :) quite hard
Really well done
love the graphics and playability. i thought the controls were very intuitive. looks like we posted our games on PICO at almost the same time! I played your game over there before seeing it on here : )
Nice one, I really love the graphics you achieved with the pico8 palette. The gameplay is very complete, only a bit difficult. Good job :)
I loved the concept and the graphics. I really like the simplicity of the gameplay, really cleaver.
I love the game. I do wonder what the point is of the game. If all you can do is swapping one item to another, then there's not much progression, is there?
I really liked the visual simplicity, it really worked well with the concept. Congratulations for the game.
Gostei muito da simplicidade visual, realmente funcionou bem com o conceito. Parabéns pelo jogo. :flag_br:
Best game I played so far in this jam! It's just fun!
You can probably add more interesting decisions by giving special habilities to specific enemies. Great game!
The mechanics are great in this game! It's almost like a puzzle :). The sounds also were very well thought out, they fit the art style nicely. Lovely bit of game design! I think it would have been fun to let the player choose what they had in their backpack in the beginning!
Really interesting idea, but sometimes I meet rooms where you can't go to next room because blocks close the stairs. Anyway awesome entry!
Nice game! I like the idea of the game, haven't thought about inventory management in my brainstorming time.
It plays nice and you get fast the hang of it. I like it.
Great use of the theme!
This is SUCH A GOOD CONCEPT. Like, even beyond the theme, I love how the strategy relies on paying attention to the listed enemy stats and planning your moves accordingly. My only - ONLY - gripe is the bad English. XD
I'd be more than happy to proofread/edit your text if you want to release an updated version!
This is really nice! The graphics and music/sound effects are lovely~ Overall a really solid game, everything fits together nicely. Enjoyed a lot playing this!
Great LD scale roguelike!
In the beginning it is a bit too easy to just turtle out all the enemies to get them close and then take them out one by one X-COM style, but it gets harder as you get further.
The idea is really amazing. It might have had more impact if there were more items that you could actually give away without getting helpless but still by far the best use of the theme I have seen so far. Enemy variety was high enough as to not make the game get boring and the graphics were adequate. Great entry.
Took some time to get used to the concept, but it quickly got addicting. The graphics, sounds, and gameplay are all very tight; one of the benefits of the Pico8! I wish there were more items I could collect to spice up the gameplay. But this game is fun and has a lot of potential, good work!
Excellent game, the theme is very well met! It played very smoothly and it was quite engaging - deciding what to throw away was a difficult decision. Once i committed to the idea of checking out all enemies exactly, it was very tactical. I feel like there are a bit too many enemies that are about the same, the 1move&onhit guys. Armor is the obvious thing to lose first imo, you don't need it if you plan your steps, which you have to do.
Sadly, in my last run (after buying another sword) i got this: 1.png
Oh, and the text at the beginning was a bit much, but i understand why you need it. As i said, i had to commit to the stats and items, instead of being eased into it by the game. But that's no problem, especially not for a gamejam.
Anyway, i'm off to play another round ;)
PS: just had a level with a blockend exit :(
PPS: 457 tops, although i could do indefinitely by just killing monsters.
Very well done! I would like to be allowed to select my initial equipment to try out different experiences.
Thanks everyone for feedbacks!
First, if you liked this game, you will love [Fire & Brimstone](https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=16777&tid=2786) ! give it a try, it is better in all point, and had more variety!
(and come back delete stars in innovation, I just simplify it and add the "gold = lose one apt" thing)
Then:
@oskarolausson, @brian-wurster and @g12345 : I was thinking score was enough to give the desire to have gold. But maybe I had to force player to take it... (in other hand, I like the idea that you can skip one floor, when things are too hard, by running to the stairs...)
@owc and @rongo-matane : sorry for block rooms, I thought I prevented this possibilities, but you know, ludum dare... time...
@ryusui : yeah my english is so bad, it's a real problem for ludum dare (Past LD, I have done text-base game, it was awful...). I don't know if I will updated the game (after each LD, I want, then I come back to work, life...), but if you want to proofread this version, you can on the pico cart (if you have pico-8) or [here](https://mensuel.framapad.org/p/unrogue) ...
@rongo-matan (again) : I know you can get really high score by just killing monster, but a monster give you 1 point, and gold 100 points. Me, I can't resist to have less capabilities (then, I died) (but I have a new best: 622)...
@jlreymendez : if you survive enough time, you can exchange your gold for ability...
Entertaining, nice! :-)
Really well put together. I usually find pico-8 games a bit overpowering visually, and this game really shows what can be done with the palette when the brighter colours are used a bit more sparingly.
Good and interesting concept. I loved the sprites – found them very cute. After a few attempts I got till floor 6, but I'll keep trying :)
Nothing to add really that hasn't been said here in the comments already. Solid entry and thanks for pointing me at Fire & Brimstone. That was excellent as well.
The concept is great and it's very easy to understand. Good job! Enemies look interesting even though they are only 8x8 pixels :)
Really nice Pico-8 game, even though I'm extremely bad at it... Best I could do was about 110? It took me a few tries to understand all the stats but the strategy really opened up and I can see how smart this game really is. I like the simple sound design too. Great game!
nice game you have here. reminds me of the old text based games
Really cute dungeon crawler with an interesting risk/reward focus! Only major complaint is that there doesn't seem to be an end goal beyond seeing how high you can get your score: I'd be a bit more motivated to try and make it further if I knew there was a defined ending at some point.
Loved the little "walking down the stairs" animation btw.
Love the game. Great graphics and I like that when you die you can get your stuff back again. Well done!
You managed to fit a lot of information on one screen for a pico 8 game, impressive! It was a well executed, easy to understand game. Great submission.
Really nice idea, very simple, executed very well. Could've used with more incentive to go into the dungeon. Good job though.
Pretty neat! Kinda reminds me of [Paisley Princess](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/paisley-princess) from Ludum Dare 38.
