Good concept, and I really like the way the defense section looks (the audio style also complements the visuals well)

oadt 2023-10-02 13:32

Simple but well executed game! I have to say that it I think it is way too easy, but the game is difficult to balance. Enjoyed maximizing profit and the day gameplay had some nice effects and sounds (so even though I said it was too easy for me I played till I got to 1.6k per day because it was very relaxing  I also liked that there was a 'clean' style for the real world and a 'noisy' style for the virtual one (though the viruses were in the wrong style?)

One thing I noticed: I got two grayed out Renters. I guess these got destroyed? Maybe this could be made a bit more clearly. Instead of keeping them in the list maybe you could have just removed them and lower the total available disk space?

But overall cool entry!

@oadt Thanks for playing! Glad that you enjoyed the game!

Yeah the aliens/viruses don't really fit the other styles, even the other sprites (blocks, player) were not meant to be like that, that whole (defense scene) was a bit rushed. I was planning on making everything a bit noisy and affected by the lighting. I only managed to do that for the background and didn't have time for the others.

Regarding the greyed renters, those are meant to be like dead sectors on a real hard drive. So when they get destroyed, that part of the storage will be corrupted and you can't do anything about it, it just limits the limited space you have even more. Originally I was planning to have it so that you can see the health of each block and decide if you want to heal/eject it and stuff like that. But yeah I had to cut lots of features near the end of the submission.

Thanks again for playing and for the feedback!

Great concept, you had a good idea for the theme proposed, well done

denvil 2023-10-02 16:55

Defence scene was little too zoomed in. I would have liked to see more around the player. Hard drive space fit the them quite well and I even felt little bad when ejecting low paying blocks in favour of better renters.

Also there was only bills to use money so some upgrades would have been interesting. Not for space but for the defence stage.

vollfeiw 2023-10-02 17:21

I feel like this is my SSD, always struggling to find more space. Great concept, I really wonder what you could have done with more time

sharploaded 2023-10-02 17:45

I really like the idea and style. It was a bit too easy. Could be really cool with more balancing and maybe upgrades you can buy. Nice interpretation of the theme.

novicedevgames 2023-10-02 17:56

I played until i reached the day 37 .

first of all i like the concept of generating money at cost of storage the game is not only a shooter but also a management game . some people in the comment already pointed out the fact that it would be nice to upgrade the antivirus(something like increase the damage we make towards viruses ) . another thing is that we don't see the damages inflicted by the viruses nor which of my box is getting attacked(actually not a so bad thing). showing the can help us decide whiwh box to defend the most valuing up a bit more the management side of the game .

Also i saw in your source code this "src/winScene.js" . WE CAN WIN ? HOW ?

Joke aside , what tools did you use to make the game ? which game engine ? did you code all the game with JS ?

haydads 2023-10-03 01:36

Interesting combination of economics and shooter. Not sure why I was shooting green things at first. Maybe a tutorial on what i was doing would have helped. Nice one

seam00se 2023-10-03 02:33

I really liked this one! The sound effects were really great, and I loved the art style. The game itself was fun too. I like how I have to take into account how much each one paid me on top of how big they were. And then having to defend them in a shooter was really cool. That made my 1Mb $99/d one really risky, since it could be easily broken. This is really good!

googlypoo 2023-10-03 02:57

I think it might be too easy. Because the enemies did not seem to harm me I was wondering "how do I win?" Later I realized it is a survival game. I had so much cash that bills weren't a problem.

I think your concept is interesting and fits the theme

aerial 2023-10-03 04:47

Thanks everyone for playing!

@novicedevgames Yeah the defense scene is lacking a lot of things, and I couldn't implement a proper use of all the money gained like dump it on upgrades and other cool stuff.

Regarding the `src/winScene.js`, yes originally there was supposed to be a win condition where you have to buy something very expensive to beat the game 😁 but I didn't have time to set it up.

The tools I used are the ones mentioned above (Sounds with Labchirp | LMMS | Audiotonic, Graphics with GIMP), and the game is coded in js with the Phaser library and the offers/renters lists are just HTML elements with some CSS styling all plugged into Phaser.

thewinrawr 2023-10-03 12:10

I like how you put a management and a shooter game together. I also like the theme revolving around software bits "renting" out space on your computer and viruses trying to attack them, that was pretty creative. I'm not sure how you "lose" in the game, my units were getting hit quite a lot but nothing happened to them. The shooting part of the game is fairly simple and I am not sure if it serves much purpose to the game, to me it seems like there's supposed to be more features that connects it with the management part of the game but they are missing. Overall though I had fun playing it and deciding who to keep and kick out. Good work!

masterproject 2023-10-03 13:05

I'll go a bit against the grain here and say that I didn't quite get what you were going with here. The economics thing gave me the impression that this would be a Zachtronics-esque puzzle game with limited resources, so when I started shooting green enemies, I was very confused.

The shooting, by the way, was indeed fun, as the visual and sound effects were crunchy enough for me to enjoy the simple act of destroying the enemies... however, I didn't really understand why I was doing any of that. The two game components - namely, the resource management and the action bits - felt a bit tacked on. I'm not sure what could be done... maybe with a tutorial, I'd understand how they work together better? As of now, though, I admit I was left a bit puzzled by the entire experience. I hope you find success with it, though!

jcmonkey 2023-10-03 15:28

nice game it was fun to shoot things.

alis 2023-10-03 15:47

I had fun playing this! I think that you had a very large scope and tried to do too much in too little time though, because the two "sides" of the gameplay feel very disconnected. With my leftover money I was expecting to be able to buy upgrades or something, and that the game would progressively get more difficult, but the days went on and I was stacking money, used only to pay bills. I stopped after 20 minutes when I realized that I covered the whole concept of the game and that it would be hours before I eventually lose. Very nice take on the theme, though :)

kenevil1 2023-10-03 16:06

This game is quite literally my life except I dont get paid for storage, it just usually ends up with me hording, refusing to remove files, and buying more storage. Jokes aside I really like the mechanic, but I think the a real improvement would be to be buy upgrades with the money you got but its a Jam so I can guess the deadline started zooming in. Really enjoyable experience anyways :D

cheesepencil 2023-10-03 16:58

Ambitious scope for a compo game but it turned out really well! It was too easy but I'm sure you'd have added more depth and difficulty tweaks if you had more time.

cogcomp 2023-10-03 20:33

Like a lot of the others I think the game was maybe a bit too easy, but not all games need to be difficult. It was sort of relaxing to blast away at those viruses without too many worries as well

tasakasama 2023-10-04 20:02

I would have liked to see a little more, I'm not sure I understood the point of choosing this or that storage apart from the price? Could it have been defense points or something? in any case it is well executed, congratulations to you

senso 2023-10-05 15:11

Impressive for a game for a COMPO! I really liked the light effects on the bullets. It would have been great to see the health points of the stored data otherwise does data has hp :)

jebouin 2023-10-05 17:07

That's an interesting take on the theme! As others have said it felt too easy at the beginning, maybe some upgrades to spend your cash on and some more risky offers (that attract more enemies) would have been great. I lasted 34 rounds and got a bit bored by round 20 since there was only one kind of enemy, though the shooting part felt great with all the effects and cool lighting!

lee-martin-77 2023-10-06 19:41

Really nice effects and definitely really nice audio - gave me a very exopunks vibe! I kind of wish there was more to do with the money that you earn, but given this is a compo entry it's still impressive!

harmadillo 2023-10-07 14:27

Nice graphics especially the explosions. The shooting played well and had good audio. Difficulty level felt too easy, was making enough money I didn't need to optimize what I stored on the SSD. A variety of enemy types would also be nice.

primed-pixel 2023-10-08 11:53

Awesome entry here. I loved the sound design and lighting effects, which created an overall really ominous (but welcome) mood and atmosphere to the game. Difficulty is definitely something that I found on the easy side, as I ended up sticking with the same renters throughout the entirety of my playthroughs, but nontheless I definitely enjoyed myself here, and it's a solid interpretation of the theme. Good stuff :)

plepletier 2023-10-09 03:23

An intriguing blend of management and shooting gameplay. I'm not entirely sure why I'm shooting green balls, but nonetheless, the game is enjoyable and interesting. Good job!

happyglitch 2023-10-10 16:23

I like the idea. It feels really promising, but unfinished. In my opinion it lacks a story, like everyday events in Papers Please. You could add special renters, with different personalities and quirks impacting the gameplay. The graphics and audio are awesome.

markais 2023-10-12 01:33

Hey @aerial don't know where's the best place to write you, but I was interested if you could share your flying strategy for the "Squeeze & Wiggle" game (as your streamable video is down). I'm able to reproduce the bug some of the time, but not consistently enough for <1 min run. Thanks :D

aerial 2023-10-12 14:23

@markais I reuploaded the video: https://streamable.com/t8mnz3 hope it helps. Good luck =D

vfqd 2023-10-15 21:12

Cool game! I think with some upgrades and new enemy progression, this could be really good

jelch 2023-10-15 22:19

Solid foundation for a game that could go lots of different directions! I could see adding automated defenses (antivirus software) that take up space at the cost of income, turret upgrades, etc.
