The ending came a lot quicker than I expected. Interesting use of the theme here, I'd be surprised if I saw other entries with a similar mechanic. It would've been fun if the traps reset you to the start when you touch them (maybe in a hard mode). Overall this was a good entry, and I'm excited to see what else you can do in the future!

xorel 2022-10-03 03:33

@trabasura Thanks! Totally just ran out of time, especially since I spent more time building up an easy way to churn out levels...only for time to be up. Waffled on doing that for the jam category, but I challenged myself to finish in 48 hours. Thanks for trying it out!

bosco 2022-10-03 03:33

Great concept! Would love to see more levels in the future. I like how you implemented the queue for actions, it made it feel very nice to play and you could kinda type moves with reckless abandon if you wanted to, while still rewarding more careful play. Overall great entry, very impressive for a first time!

caresle 2022-10-03 03:52

I short and really to the point, I liked that the traps doesn't reset you to the start of the level, preventing frustration. It will be nice if there was enemies with the same mechanic that the player or a score board where you can see the movements per level.

In general was a really nice experience and well made, also congrats for completing your first game by yourself

joey-van-lierop 2022-10-03 04:46

A cute concept! I think it may have been interesting to trying making shorter levels, and failing would reset you back to the start of the level. It may have been more frustrating, but the chaos of trying to input a precise string of directions within 10 seconds also sounds kinda fun

xorel 2022-10-03 04:48

@joey-van-lierop Oh the ideas in my head for pitfall traps...multiple floors..enemies that have patterns to memorize... I'm excited to get some rest then build on this for the near future

haydads 2022-10-03 06:02

I am getting a "Can't find this page" on itch.io, is it just me?

xorel 2022-10-03 06:17

@haydads Should be good now, for some reason it flipped back to private. Sorry about that, and it also is embedded here on this LD page just in case

m11 2022-10-03 08:34

Congratulations on finishing! A cute concept - short, but fun :)

haydads 2022-10-03 08:38

Yep got that working!

Cool game, I am glad I didnt need to remember the whole track like I thought I would.

Great submission

thegamearchitect 2022-10-03 10:32

Well done. Not the best theme for this type of game.

henrik-ganard 2022-10-03 11:48

Great game, as someone said in the comments I too would like to see difficulty levels where the entire movement is reset when you collide, making you have to do it all from scratch when you fail. Thanks for making this little gem.

rickylee 2022-10-03 11:49

This is great! ^^ very unique, I wish it was longer would love to have seen where you could take it. well made! :)

xorel 2022-10-03 11:50

@henrik-ganard Hardcore mode sounds like it might be a thing in the post LD additions!

greenphox 2022-10-03 12:00

Nice Game, I got stuck in the maze, and after 300 moves, I quitted, I am really tired right now, so I will probably continue later. Great game, I liked its uniqueness and the simplicity of the concept. The graphics were also cool. Well done!

daandruff 2022-10-03 12:04

Nice idea, but the darkout areas where used a bit too much I think. It would've been more interesting using more moving enemies to try to calculate their movement while waiting. Good game nonetheless, nice work!

benskca 2022-10-03 12:25

Love the concept and the level design was fun! The last level took me a WHILE to beat, I was so relieved when I finally saw the goal . I think there's lots of cool ideas for level elements you could add to expand on the game, like moving enemies or doors that are only open every set number of moves etc. (Blobbert is adorable btw)

pvg 2022-10-03 13:09

This is a great interpretation of the theme. I am not sure about hiding the goal in that last level; it made it hard to know if I was making any progress, and I think an action-programming game lives or dies on the sense that choices are meaningful.

I enjoyed the simple, retro-style graphics and sounds.

xorel 2022-10-03 13:34

@pvg I waffled on that last level, especially since before the last level there was going to be a ramp up on that. Excited to keep refining it going forward, and thanks for playing!

eerongal 2022-10-03 16:39

Interesting take on the theme. Makes it into a bit of an interesting puzzle game. Also there seems to be a movement cap that's not immediately apparent?

mdotedot 2022-10-03 17:54

very well made. It had me counting and guessing. Great risk/reward combination. But I sometimes wish I had a key to get it to move dammit ... ha ha

Well done!

zerbu 2022-10-03 17:56

A really creative use of the theme! It's a fun challenge of measuring distance in your head!

kingshake 2022-10-03 18:50

Really fun!

frib 2022-10-03 18:51

Really nice implementation of the theme! Love the timer so you can't measure out things perfectly. I can see a bunch of additional new features to spice up the game further, and this is a nice foundation.

nyxkn 2022-10-03 19:00

Very nice game! This was a very good way of making use of the theme. The third level was nasty :D Counting tiles felt a bit fatiguing and I wonder if there are additional hints that could be placed to make it easier. I felt like inputting the moves was the more fun part, rather than visually counting things. Nice music. The guardians idea felt really fitting.

nash 2022-10-03 19:43

No way it is your first completed solo game! Great work!

It was fun to try to blindly guess the layout of some levels and try to complete them on the first try. It is an interesting question whether you should add some kind of ghost feedback instead of forcing the player to count the moves in their head. I think it can easily get very jarring for the brain - especially on larger levels.

I can always appreciate when people take time to create their own music and sound effects for their jam games. The music was a bit repetitive though and I would have wished to turn it down a little. It is a good practise to always include a volume slider right at the first screen of your game. It is very hard to judge what would be the correct volume level because it depends on the player's setup.

Overall, great work! Looking forward to seeing your games in future jams!

xpycm 2022-10-03 20:19

Nice game. Easy controls. Cute graphics.

atill 2022-10-03 21:15

This is awesome! You did really well to incorporate the theme in an unconventional way and it's a lot of fun to try counting and guessing all the feasible movements and inputting them before the timer runs out. I'd love to play additional levels if you decide to make more - congrats!

footlettuce 2022-10-03 21:51

That last level had me on the mother of all goosechases - well done! Great game, and clever interpretation of the 10 second theme into a solid movement mechanic. I'd add an optional mode which toggles on a crosshair for where your moves would end up, as I found myself using the mouse crosshair to preplan visually. Otherwise, solid!

coolbeens 2022-10-04 04:35

This was amazing!! i loved it! blobbert is soo cute and the concept is so fun. i loved having to count my steps and plan out where i was gonna go. the last level was so intimidating thinking i had to remember and backtrack in case i reached a dead end! waiting 10 seconds feels a bit too long sometimes when im just only moving one step but it also makes me want to take risks or be better at planning out my steps, so it kind of works out! i'll lead you to safety blobbert! Great job! i loved this! (Edit: after a few minutes of playing this, the game song is still stuck in my head. so great job on that too! HAHA)

matt-green 2022-10-04 05:09

The graphics were indeed cute and the core mechanic was solid. As far as level design, it didn't feel like there was any consequence for going slow, and there was no benefit (or in some cases possibility) for going fast. So I'd step forward 2 or 3 blocks, and wait 10 seconds, repeat.

I also felt like the music and effects didn't match the mood. Like, they were very electronic but Blobbbert was squishy and cute. I would have loved something more playful.

But otherwise great entry. Lots of room to add new mechanics here, I think

xorel 2022-10-04 05:15

@matt-green Thanks for the feedback! Besides wishing I had more time for more levels, the other feature I was close to wrapping up planning stages was a scoring system of some kind to prevent exactly that kind of slow movement. It's an interesting problem that got deeper the more I thought about it, do I have a set score for each level and does each step lower it? Do I instead lower it for extra 10 second cycles to push for speed? It was a fascinating problem that I couldn't solve in time and is the top thing I'm excited to tackle for my continued work.

Oh and I so wanted squish music too, alas my lack of experience making music made me finally just go with a bouncy/metronome sound lol. Again thanks for the great feedback, I really appreciate it!

bentglasstube 2022-10-04 05:39

This was a really cool concept and well executed. I think a few things fell short, as others have mentioned. The 10 second timer is much too long and I mostly felt like I was waiting for it to finish. The last level was a bit frustrating because the only way to find the exit is via random exploration. The graphics and music were simple but well done, and added some charm to the game. Great work.

holy-doggo01 2022-10-04 17:01

Very well made game! Main idea is pretty interesting and well implemented. Gameplay is fun, but it is on the slower side for me, which is not an objective problem. Overall, good job!

mikoziq 2022-10-04 18:30

Hey! I won!

Pros:

- Cute main character - Simple old-school graphics - Well executed mechanics - Glad that crashing on a trap does not reset the level - Sfx and music in Compo is always a plus

Cons

- Last level is a bit too random, especially that on earlier level you do show the goal mark - Wish there was a tiny bit more variety of the puzzling

Good job nonetheless!

xorel 2022-10-05 01:01

@mikoziq Thanks for playing and the feedback! Definitely wanted to have a ramp up of difficulty up to the end level, buuuuut didn't have time so it just slaps you with a spike of unfairness lol. Already been adding some more levels since submissions ended!

mrwarranty 2022-10-06 02:22

Mutual congratulations to the two of us on finishing our first compo. I used to play a board game like this with my son called "Robot Turtles" when he was a little guy. Planning out the moves in advance is a great trainer for mentally stacking up logical progression. Your overall execution of this is pretty great, especially for a first-timer. I liked the sound and retro feel. Obviously the game was shorter than anyone wanted, but that's the nature of the beast. I think I would have done away with the darkness (or at least used it more sparingly); perhaps the challenge to the player could be an overall limit on time or number of moves so it feels a bit fairer than just making them blind fire their strategy, if that makes sense. But you really did something cool here!

solah 2022-10-07 19:29

Pretty cool for a first game, would be interested to see more levels you can build ^^

mavvy 2022-10-08 03:55

First of all, congratulations on finishing your game. The design is intuitive, the art and sound work well and there's a fair amount of polish in here. You can always build more, but what's there is already pretty tight.

puree-adventure 2022-10-09 13:44

Congrats for the game !! Finishing is always hard ! For me, it was great that there wasn't a lot of level because I am usually really bad at games and can't always finish them, so for once I won something x) Really interesting mechanism ! Well done !
