Will come back when ratings open but enjoyed this as a good "minesweeper-like" some simple rules and a bit of nice game-feel that add up to a pretty satisfying push your luck game.

william-corrin 2022-04-04 07:30

This is a good time killer! I played around 6 times or so. I got 254 as a high score, almost perfect!

I know part of the point is that its random, but i think some kind of player influence in terms of gameplay would add a huge bonus to the overall fun of the game. Its made very well, but due to no control, i think it loses its replay-ability after a bit.

Its a nice entry :)

simplepotential 2022-04-04 10:40

@william-corrin Thanks! I'm trying to think of some ideas for giving user more control but I keep ending up with something that is too Minesweeper like.

p0l4r 2022-04-04 14:42

I see what you were going for but i think, like you said in the description, that it's a bit too random to be fun. The only player choice you have is whether to use the lightning, or if a 23 comes up you know that the adjacent tiles are safe, but that last one is not much of a player choice.

The lightning power up is a bit hard to spot if you don't know the game, as it's hiding with the meta-game buttons like restart and share. I thought it was some new cool social media thing i hadn't heard about until i read the description.

It seems very well made, and it's an interesting study to try to come up with a satisfying game like this. It has the potential to be great if you tweak it to the right minesweepery player choice vs randomness balance.

Well done!

simplepotential 2022-04-04 15:01

@p0l4r Thanks for the feedback. I'll see about moving the button if I do a post-compo version. Definitely want to give the player some more control as well, if you have any ideas, please let me know

asmadigames 2022-04-04 16:09

Neat, simple game. I got a 271!

There's a nice mix between purely random and just a little bit of control. This skews a little more toward the random right now, but I think you could, in theory, keep adding more rules and concepts if you wanted to extend the concept. Good work!

black-flag 2022-04-04 16:14

I really like the minimalist graphics and the idea is really solid, and the luck based gameplay does mean that losing is inevitable, so it definitely fits the theme there! I think the game may have benefitted from a tutorial, but given the amount of time you had its understandable why you couldn't add one! In a future version there could be more ways of determining what's around a square too possibly, to increase the strategy aspect? Apart from that, its a really enjoyable mine-sweeper-like puzzle especially because of the nice touches like animations.

simplepotential 2022-04-04 16:21

@asmadigames & @black-flag - Thanks for the feedback!

pinballjunior 2022-04-04 16:58

I managed to flip all the tiles before I got to 24 on the my first go. It's an interesting puzzle game with a clean look.

snory 2022-04-04 22:24

I like how clean the game is.

At first I was trying to use the rule that no neighbor number can be consecutive but it was not enough to be in charge of the game.

Also "special" powers are cool idea. Try to come up with some logic which can be somehow predicted and i think you have a good little game. :)

simplepotential 2022-04-04 22:35

@snory - Thanks for the feedback. The no neighbors help as does the auto clearing of a couple adjacent tiles that are within 2 points of the clicked one, but it doesn't help as much as I would have liked. I'm still trying to think of some additional ways to improve it

codechomper 2022-04-04 23:52

I like it very simple and fast to play. The rule set is easy to understand and I was able to get what I thought was a decent score. I played 5-6 times trying to better my score. Good job

jimbly 2022-04-05 01:36

My score: 174, which I suspect is not too good ^_^.

Well put together game =). As you said, seems like a lot of random luck. I would have liked to have a little more ways to glean information. The one special power was good, would have been good to have more things like that, perhaps that combine to give useful information.

rhewid 2022-04-05 07:35

Cool minesweeper esque game! Clean UI and easy to get into - could be fun during commuting for a quick round! Great entry.

anna-karpova 2022-04-05 12:04

cool game, simple and clear. I got 295 from the third time, not bad for me:)

sdelay 2022-04-05 14:06

Well, it's nice to play this, like a time killer! I read above someone said there is too much randomness, I agree, but that also the point of the game "how lucky can I get?"

simplepotential 2022-04-05 14:10

@anna-karpova Not bad at all!

@sdelay - Kind of agree especially for the Jam itself since I took the theme to basically mean you'll lose/win quickly. But as a post compo/release it probably is too random. I'm working on a new ability that will highlight all the Odd or Even (random) tiles which are not 0 but one of which is 24. It might have a timer on it so that it is only visible for a few seconds encouraging user to open more tiles on their own before using it.

Still some balance to workout, if anyone has suggestions do let me know!

wetburritosupreme 2022-04-05 17:04

Nice and clean entry! A wacky minesweeper feel. Wasn't sure if bug, but occasionally would flip more then one per click, not on a 0 but like 19 maybe?

Edit: Rad, I must've missed that feature. I'll give it another go!

simplepotential 2022-04-05 17:09

@wetburritosupreme - Thanks for the feedback, that's a game feature. If you click on a tile and the adjacent tiles are within 2 points of the tile clicked, it will open the adjacent tile and score it.

augustcoder 2022-04-05 17:21

Very clean and nice-looking game. Could definitely use some more strategy, because currently the only thing you can really do is use lightning immediately and clear out everything adjacent to 23, and the rest is just luck. Also, noticed that 22 doesn't auto-open the 24 tile if it is adjacent. Is that intentional? High score: 284.

simplepotential 2022-04-05 17:32

@augustcoder - Thanks for the feedback and agreed. I have few things in the works. As for 22 not opening 24, that's intentional. 24 can only be opened by the player. The 0 tile cannot open it either. And thanks, that should get me to 20 votes :v:

elede 2022-04-05 18:06

Simple and nice game. I agree with comments above that more power-ups could bring strategy to the game. Good job! Keep going!

glayson 2022-04-05 18:31

Has a webdev myself, you did a great job with the UI!!! Some blips and bops when clicking the buttons would be great, but the game is very well made! Just missed better instructions... Took me a while to figured out what to do.

simplepotential 2022-04-05 18:34

@glayson - Thanks for the feedback, good to hear from a fellow webdev on it. Agree on all points. Sound will come later and I plan to redo the help file so it is more concise

elena-s 2022-04-05 21:13

If the game was more logical, it could be great, better than sudoku. Still, there is some fun of a minefield.

dirkinz 2022-04-05 22:22

The amount of randomness makes it tough to really get into this game. That said, I don't think it would take much to make it really compelling. Just a little more information. Maybe adjacent numbers are always within 10 of each other or something to do with odd/even. Perhaps you could add a sum at the end of each row/column

simplepotential 2022-04-05 22:29

@dirkinz - Thanks! I have a power up in the works that deals with revealing even/odd tiles that I think will help. I like your idea of a total at the end of row, afraid that might give away too much but I might check into that and see. Maybe it'd be a power/bonus that reveals a row/column's total at random or by user selection.

olddog 2022-04-05 23:42

the shape and ui is good ,ps: click changing color with rotate makes me feels very good, but game playing makes me fell a little boring,,can I do more than random click? ,and some audio effect can makes this game better

boaromayox 2022-04-06 05:55

Simple game, the rules were a bit tricky to follow, but the graphics look astounding! Replay value's not high, though.

Not much to say here, but great job!

lakea 2022-04-06 08:13

A very nice entry and a good groundwork for taking this further in the future.

kory 2022-04-06 13:03

I like the way the tiles spin when you hover over them :)

2022-04-06 16:54

Sleek game! I included it in my Ludum Dare compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/PKNtuuCFWt0

simplepotential 2022-04-06 17:25

@jupiter-hadley - Thanks for taking a look. As you pointed out, it is indeed very random at the moment as I didn't have time to get more logic built in. Changes are in development though!

cogcomp 2022-04-06 19:52

Clever game but I'm with @jimbly . There's a bit too much randomness involved here. Some extra mechanism to tilt it close to being a more skill/experience based game would be nice. Still well done. Not many people would dare to try and make a 48h compo game using just HTML,CSS & Javascript!

forgin-bits 2022-04-06 20:58

Simple relaxing minesweeper game, but it has more depth to it than I thought. Good job

smdg 2022-04-07 09:51

Nice game to play. This game feels like it has potential if you continue developing into making it to a game that uses more logic and a better UI.

yusovv 2022-04-07 18:30

At first I did not immediately understand how to play! But then I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was!

simplepotential 2022-04-07 18:50

Thanks everyone for the feedback, sorry if I haven't replied to everyone. @yusovv @smdg @cogcomp

stasm 2022-04-07 20:47

I wonder if it would be possible to introduce constraints about columns and rows that the play could deduce from the visible tiles. E.g. what if the sum of all tiles in a row was some known number? Then, by flipping just a few tiles in the row and in the column, I might be able to predict where the 24 hides.

simplepotential 2022-04-07 21:05

@stasm I like it and have been working on something similar. Thanks for the suggestion!

projectaroid 2022-04-08 20:19

Cool game. I came so close a few time to getting 300 points but couldn't. Nice work.

vidarn 2022-04-08 21:49

Nice and minimalistic game. The ui is very clean and the animations are satisfying. The instructions were good and made the game very easy to get into.

gullyngames 2022-04-10 15:22

This is a really cool concept for a game. Like you said, the game is mostly just luck, and it would be nice if there were a way to influence the game more. Some simple sound effects could make the game more satisfying to play, and some more powerups that the player could use to make it more strategy-based would be nice. I really like the look and feel of the interface right now, and I hope you continue working on this game in the future!

hmightypirate 2022-04-10 15:22

I like the concept. I think some information is needed regarding where the 24 might be to avoid being so random.

simplepotential 2022-04-10 15:59

@gullyngames & @hmightypirate - Thank you both, completely agree. I've made some changes on my end that will help (maybe made it too easy now actually). I'm also making it so it auto opens the 1 tile and I've set it up so that 0 and 1 cannot be adjacent to 24. Gives you some good info with just that.

games-by-tom 2022-04-10 17:40

 yay

that was fun!

I liked the concept and the clean look. The theme is also on spot.

Good timekiller and a great game!

simplepotential 2022-04-10 17:46

@games-by-tom Thanks, glad you liked it!

milq 2022-04-10 23:28

Wow! I love these kind of games! They hook me a lot. Did you consider some kind of tutorial in the post version? Congratulations for the game, I love it!

adobobo 2022-04-11 01:22

simple and straight forward game, I like it. As you said the game is mostly based on luck, which I'm bad at lol. But still, I hope this one could've been fleshed out more, like adding more rules for numbers just so you have some more 'thinking' options to get a higher score. Other than that, yeah, great game!

sheol 2022-04-12 07:50

Pretty interesting game! I sorta had minesweeper vibes from this!

nyxkn 2022-04-12 08:35

Still no idea how to play :D But it looks quite polished. Only misses sound effects.

oller125 2022-04-20 20:49

I love how the portable the game is. I kind of get the rules, but I feel like there are not enough constraints to not guess most of the time. One thing that's missing is sound effects but otherwise this is a well polished game.
