Super cool game. Tough as nails. Reminds me of some old school ATARI stuff.

ivysly 2021-10-05 05:37

Brutal! this game is awesome. crunchy, unique mechanic, good soundtrack. you did a great job man! Sometimes it felt a little hard to jump off blocks that i was grabbing with the mouse.

cad 2021-10-05 05:38

Very cohesive aesthetic! The mechanics played well, everything felt juicy and haptic. I enjoyed the introduction of colour-based rules (in multiple ways) later on which kept things fresh!

aevek 2021-10-05 05:41

Really solid game! I really liked the way you introduced new elements to the game gradually so I had time to get used to it. Each step felt like a solid development on the last so the progression was really nice. Controls also felt great, and of course that soundtrack is awesome. The whole game comes together really nicely, great work!

kbf123 2021-10-05 05:43

Ok, this is actually amazing. This honestly feels near like a full game. Like with a few more days of level building I could see this being sold on steam or something.

Not sure what was with that ending though. When I saw the red I thought I triggered some bad end or something (maybe I did. I dunno)

yuko 2021-10-05 05:48

A good concept, fun to play but a bit too hard for me at the end!

osh-studio 2021-10-05 06:09

The little character is so cute lol. Also thought the sliding red wall looked great. Simple but effective art style communicated the mechanics easily and well designed levels. Mans run animation was SO fast hahaha

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 06:21

@kkbf123 You woke the Black Spire. Well done. Thank you so much for playing, we are thrilled you enjoyed it!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 06:23

@big-play-ben Oh my god you are going to make my heart melt that is some high praise :DDD Thank you so much for playing!!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 06:24

@yuko I guess I'd prefer too hard over too easy, thank you so much for playing!!!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 06:25

@osh-studio The character design was a complete happy accident, we couldn't be more happy that it turned out like that! Thank you so much for playing and reviewing!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 06:27

@aevek I'm so glad you thought it was paced well, we were really worried about that and making sure it wasn't overwhelming and your feedback means a lot! Thank you so much!!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 06:30

@ivysly We are going to cry from all these wonderful comments, thank you so much for the review!!!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 06:31

@cad Thank you so much for the playthrough and review!! We're really glad you liked the aesthetic, going 1-bit(ish) was definitely the right move in retrospect.

rubr 2021-10-05 19:56

Oh, I like this one. The boxes are a bit janky, but that's part of the fun! Love the pixel art and the music, feels pretty nicely polished for a jam game!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 21:19

@rubr We're glad you enjoyed it! Gus and I are very pleased with how it came out, and seeing all these incredible comments is probably the most wonderful experience a game dev can have. I see that you have your own game that looks pretty killer. I'm about to go check that out now.

popertots 2021-10-05 21:28

That got hard fast haha. 5/5

zain 2021-10-05 22:55

Great feeling platformer and it gets pretty difficult too. The art and music are also super solid. Great game!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 23:12

@zain Thanks for playing! This was my (Braeden) first time trying to do pixel art and music for a full project, so it's really encouraging to see others enjoying it! Gus helped me out with some software tips and taking care of the tile set and a couple tracks of his own.

rufson 2021-10-05 23:44

Lovely reto vibes! great levels and sound track too. I have to go through it to the very end. You have my stars!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-05 23:53

@rufson We appreciate you taking the time to check W O B B L E out. We lost so much sleep to this project, and the amount of homework I have to catch up on is ridiculous (Gus was responsible and managed to get it done before hand), so we're glad it was worth it. After Sun looks killer, I'm looking forward to playing it!

spike-studio 2021-10-06 14:43

This game is very polished, great job there! Got a bit hard, but I kept going through as is was too fun to stop haha

cope 2021-10-06 14:47

Fun game. Feels really polished. wobble2.png

javasaurus 2021-10-06 15:04

Hey, thank you for making this game, we had a LOT of fun playing and even turned it into a co-op game, where I was controlling the keyboard and my son was using the mouse to "troll" me (and sometimes actually help me solve the level). Great aesthetic , very nicely done. The audio also seemed to bug out on edge however, just letting you know ! CHEERS !

foxxy 2021-10-06 15:17

Nice game. Look great, really polished.

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-06 15:42

@javasaurus Hey there. I hope you know how important your comment is to me. The whole reason I'm in college for Game Design and participating in this Jam is because of the intense emotions tied to memories of playing games with my father in wacky ways. To see that something I helped to create gave someone else the opportunity to create those memories is beyond incredible. I will likely be framing your comment and setting it up in my workspace. Thank you so much for playing!

vectrex28 2021-10-06 15:42

Took me some time to figure out how to properly lift the crates, but once you do, it's mad fun! This might be the most fun I've had in this Ludum Dare so far. The graphics and music were absolutely brilliant and it fits the theme very well. This genuinely feels like a demo to a full game and I'd be ready to spend money for something of this quality. Great work!!!

gus-goucher 2021-10-06 15:46

@javasaurus just wanted to add on that your comment is absolutely the best thing I have ever read in all of my game-making. Thank you so much for playing.

gus-goucher 2021-10-06 15:48

@vectrex28 Thank you so much for the high praise - we pushed really hard to make sure it felt polished and whole, which is something I know I've struggled with in the past. Thank you so much for playing and for the incredibly kind words!

gus-goucher 2021-10-06 15:49

@spike-studio I'm glad it's difficult but still fun enough that you kept playing!! I know I'm pretty weak when it comes to hard games so it's incredible to hear that someone else enjoyed it enough to see it through!

vectrex28 2021-10-06 15:50

Oh, the last stage was pretty cool too! Just the right amount of challenge without it being unfair. I think that was my favourite part

gus-goucher 2021-10-06 15:55

@vectrex28 I think we're both super happy (Braeden and I) with the way that level came out. Playtesting with other people helped for sure!

t-r-e-f-e-t-h-e-n 2021-10-06 15:56

@vectrex28 You're incredible! Thanks for playing our game, we really appreciate it! It gets hard after a while to say thank you in different ways, but I mean every word! Also, sick Metroid profile pic, it's my favorite franchise of all time.

sli 2021-10-07 06:32

Wow I didn't expect to like is as much as I did. The level design was great, getting progressively harder and adding the new features was balanced very well in my opinion. The game play also felt pretty good. Well Done!

gus-goucher 2021-10-07 13:09

@sli Thank you for playing! Glad you liked it!

piw 2021-10-07 15:53

I couldn't play the game (my machine was too low end), but I did love the soundtrack!

antrimplato 2021-10-07 15:57

It was hard to me to go for the end, but game is fun and I like this graphics.

gus-goucher 2021-10-07 16:00

@piw Wow, I didn't realize this game was that intensive, but I'm glad you enjoyed the soundtrack! What are the specs on your computer?

@antrimplato Thank you for playing!

sploky 2021-10-07 16:08

Really good game. The audio is great. The art is good.

gus-goucher 2021-10-07 17:00

@sploky Thank you for playing, glad you enjoyed it!!

namnam 2021-10-07 18:54

Sometimes a bit frustrating but I had fun playing it. Nice work !

wouter52 2021-10-07 18:59

I like your game! It is an interesting take on the theme. The graphics are nice and polished :) Playing this with a mousepad brings an extra challenge btw

gus-goucher 2021-10-07 19:49

@namnam It's definitely a tough one, that seems to be something a lot of people have said. I'm glad you still enjoyed it!

@wouter52 Trackpad sounds especially awful for the time-pressure levels! I applaud you for trying to use it! Thanks for checking out the game!

wouter52 2021-10-07 20:03

@gus-goucher oh I didn't make it to those levels, sounds intense! I'll snag my girlfriend's mouse if I get the chance, I'm curious now!

korfi 2021-10-07 21:47

It was really challenging but not unfair! I liked it a lot :D

twospaces-sg 2021-10-07 22:20

Guys... please don't take it to heart... as a speedrunner in a loose sense of the word, I loved cheesing this game by jumping from a block, grabbing the block mid-jump, and jumping from the block again (as well as prodding blocks through walls). Genuinely 5 out of 5 stars on the "Fun" rating. As a musician in an even more loose sense of the word, I appreciate the effort that went into the music as well.

gus-goucher 2021-10-07 23:26

@korfi That was absolutely what we were going for, thank you for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

@twospaces-sg We found that unintended bug in playtesting but it was too much fun to remove, we're so glad you found it! The best time we've seen is a 1:03 according to the in-game timer, see if you can beat it! Thank you for playing!

wedgiebee 2021-10-08 06:22

Wow! That was a great twist on a platformer! Really fun getting to affect the environment so directly, and having to use your limited blocks correctly.

Difficulty-wise, the difficulty started to hamper my enjoyment of the game toward the end! The level where the squiggly lines are introduced is where I got stuck and couldn't get past :( I think there were 2 things that really got in my way personally. 1) Having the blocks rotate when they're picked up added more frustration than interesting challenge for me. 2) I'm not sure if I was experiencing a bug or if I just didn't understand the controls, but when the big colorful blocks were introduced, instead of being able to click and drag, I would have to like click 10 times in a row and THEN hold and drag for it to actually work. Not sure if I misunderstood something with the controls there, but that made levels involving those blocks really difficult for me.

Woof! Now that that's out of the way: really enjoyed the vibes of the game! Simple, crispy graphics, nice tunes, the "bummer" particles, and the really nice brick fireplace thing are all things that stick out as giving some nice character to the game. Overall, the core mechanic was great when I was able to use it properly. Great job!

chillertyp 2021-10-08 11:46

I managed to glitch the block through the bottom. -.-

And I really love the retro graphics and sounds! Nice game. Five stars.

gus-goucher 2021-10-08 13:12

@wedgiebee Thank you so much for the feedback! Although we're super grateful for all the support, it's good to get some critique so we can improve. If we were to do this again we both agreed that having the box hang from the mouse on a joint would be much better than having it rotate automatically. That should solve the second issue you had too which sounds like it's because its rotating into the floor when you're picking it up, and then dropping it because of that. Thank you so much for playing it, I glad you enjoyed it!

@chillertyp No worries haha! If you weren't aware you can press R to restart, I hope you give it another shot! Thank you for playing and leaving a comment!

enad96 2021-10-08 15:33

Wow its so polished and really fits the theme. Great gameplay too!

gus-goucher 2021-10-08 16:30

@enad96 So glad you enjoyed! Thank you for playing!

joerenglish 2021-10-09 07:07

The super stylized graphics and sound are a big plus for me. Moving the blocks felt a little janky, but I guess that fits the theme huh? Overall a really well put together game.

hydezeke 2021-10-09 13:46

Really cool game! The box moving mechanic is really satisfying- I like the sounds/fx and how quickly you can move the boxes (which becomes pretty important later). I was sometimes frustrated when the rotation of the box made me lose time (and I had no 'rotate' key). The game was a really thrilling experience, and I really loved the style of it! Thanks for making

antti-haavikko 2021-10-09 14:14

Pretty damn cool! 😍

Screenshot 2021-10-09 at 16.50.09.png

Simple yet nice aesthetic and the music slapped pretty hard. Everything read very well and was easy to get a grasp of the mechanics. Probably the longest credits sequence I've ever seen in a jam game. 😅

I think I ended up pretty much cheesing like the latter half of the game.

wobble-cheese.gif

Even in the final bit of the final level I think I literally found a way around all the designed obstacles.

wobble-end.gif

The controls department could have used some love. The character movements felt very abrupt and fixed jump was kinda iffy too. The block grabbing was quite finnicky. You never knew which way to boxes might want to rotate when you grabbed them and they surely would have needed some more mass. They also bounced and wobbled around like they were made out of polystyrene. Considering how many times you had to pile some boxes to make a tower, it was like the hardest thing in the game as the boxes behaved like they were in a 10 richter earthquake. And that whole grab auto releasing thing felt very awkward but I guess that was done to try to avoid the exact cheese I managed to abuse anyway.

The difficulty curve was nicely smooth and at no point it got too hard. For me at least. Could have easily done with a handful of even more difficult levels. But I do enjoy hard games and by looking at the other comments, I guess this could already be considered on the hard side of things.

As I said, the music was awesome. The sound effects not that much though. I think there was some mention about them being glitchy on Chrome and I did play on it. Some of them sounded a bit harsh. But definitely would have needed a bit more variety.

I found the lava wall completely pointless and just straight up annoying for first playthrough. Probably a completely separate timed mode or something like that would have worked better or you could just give them a grade based on speed. But killing player in a puzzle game because they can't do the solution fast enough doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Hiding the tutorial image about two same color box touching was pointless as you pretty much forced the player to see it happen first hand before showing the image itself.

Anyways, good job! 👍

gus-goucher 2021-10-09 18:58

@antti-haavikko Thank you for all the feedback! The box jumping """feature""" some people have found is glitchy because it was unintended. We found it in playtesting and could have removed it, but we both agreed it was too fun to remove so we left it in. It could use some more polish for sure. Your ideas about a timed mode are super cool, and if we end up extending this game I'll make sure to bring it up. The "lava wall" (what should it even be called??) is mostly there to add some time pressure and required accuracy, especially on the first level which has it because it's an easier one to figure out. On the later levels, it's there to add to the difficulty. It sounds like you found the game relatively easy so that might be why you thought the lava wall felt out of place. Thank you so much for playing and for all the feedback!

@hydezeke @joerenglish The box rotation is definitely the biggest feedback point we've gotten, so you're not alone. Ideally I think we would have had the box "hang" from the mouse cursor on a joint, which should have been a lot more intuitive. Thank you for the comment and for playing!

animawish 2021-10-12 06:39

rad game! nice concept, good art, dope soundtrack.

gus-goucher 2021-10-12 15:14

@animawish Thank you for playing!

ideaspersecond 2021-10-14 04:15

I really liked the idea, the animations, the audio, and the music slaps. However, I think that when dragging blocks, if you drop or collide a block with the character, the character should die. It makes the game much more interesting in my opinion. At the start of the game, several blocks almost hit the player, and, in my mind, this sets up the block as dangerous. That's just my 2 cents.

Overall, impressive work!

gus-goucher 2021-10-14 13:56

@ideaspersecond That's definitely something I thought about and something we probably should have tested, but I think I didn't bring it up because of the other dangers (like spikes etc.) that we already had. That's a great idea though, and I'm really glad you liked the game! Thank you for the feedback!
