I love it. Your game becomes quickly chaotic. For some reason I'm really nauseous after playing your game. This is an art game. Good title screen music. Good first LD.
Its neat but I got somewhat confused while playing it. also I had couldn't figure out how much HP I had.
Its my first jam too! That was a pretty awesome game for your first ludum dare, got a bit difficult at times to see what was going on, but the use of color really helped me keep track of things. Keep up the work!
Very jarring and chaotic game! Cool concept. Good effort for your first go.
Dang, nice visuals.
Idk, but cannot go pass through this first screen when your email and stuff is writen
with a game like this i would make the music from the notes im picking up, so the song you hear is form the notes you make in combo, you miss, the song gets ruined and you need to start over.
Once I figure out what was happening it was pretty fun. I'm not gonna mince words here I absolutely hate the graphics you wen with they make it nearly impossible to tell what it happening which is really quite important in a game like this. That being said the actual gameplay was fun it took me longer than it should have to realize that your life was equivalent to the yellow triangles. I also enjoyed the randomly generated music. It gave the game a very hippie colony lets listen to the sgt pepper and do acid vibe. Unfortunatley the contrast of neon colors and black eventually just hearts my eyes so I had to stop playing. I did reach a personal high score of 35200.
Thank you for your feedback all, i had alot of fun making a game in 2 days, definately will add a seziere warning and tripping effect option post LD46
After asleep I'll be sure to check out all your games!
Starting with the commenters.
How did you make such nice music with procedural generation, amazing! :D
The music is phenomenal, still listening to the guitar on the gameover screen as I type. The graphics are a nice Tron-like synthesizer style. It was neat listening to the procedural song as you play, only issue I had was stepping on too many green spikes and speeding up to an unmanageable amount.
@bjakubowski I fixed the splash screen getting stuck
@lapinchatware @uppitydonkey57 @ethebakesmith @thegamegoyal @nick-barrash @jcmonkey @theseusinabottle @alex-mulkerrin I have made the trippy effect toggle with "T" To make the high speeds playable and visuals less jarring for those who don't like the effect :heart:
Oooh, it's this game! I saw yur posts and wanted to try your game out. With the theme I also thought about keeping music alive but I didn't know how to execute that idea. Well, this is one way. I like the visuals and i like the music. I also really like that the song reacts to your actions and evolves over time. The trippy effect looks cool but slows down the game quite a bit. Coincedentally this slow down cancels out the increased difficulty induced by the effect. So maybe that was intentional?
@charliegray Lag means it was easier? well thats news to me. I can turn down the amount of repeated "mirrors" that might make the game lag less, thanks for letting me know i was unaware.
T now toggles the trippy effect so that will make it less laggy im hope :heart:
Yeah a few things came to mind for this theme, fire, plants, music, cats, followers. But i didn't have a game idea and i knew sound plays a big part in any good game. So I just started recording my guitar strings, split them up and make a music generator, eventually it turned into this.
Didn't start gameplay design / code until half way through the compo
I like the psychadelic look even though it gets tougher to see things at high speeds :v:
What did I just play? :smile: Very indie. Don't turn off the effect.
The contrast between the psychedelic visuals and the soft music when you hit the notes really works.
Great sound!
@mza Cheers, it does! Avoid the speeds ups as long as you can, nothing slows it down, but you can always go faster
@galgris I agree! Thank you.
Gameplay and theme is alright, trippy effect and the music is pretty epic, ngl
The concept is very cool, but the controls are a bit clunky. I don't understand when I do something right or wrong and when I try touch some notes, I'm not sure whether the music sounds better or worse '^-^ but despite the confusion, it was very nice and refreshing! Cheers!
Also my first jam; good job on creating one of the most visually unique games I've seen so far. Something very satisfying about the discordant music/sound effects.
I liked it a lot, original, keep the note save. Just adjust the controls so they can keep up with the speed, and maybe check the player accuracy and use it as a metric to setup the game speed. (the most notes hit, the faster it goes).
@edz123 Thank you.
@wyzard Thanks for playing, what about the controls feel clunky? Jump is dependant on if you're holding the button or letting go or a mixture of both (tap, release, wait, hold). Very little instructions do make it a bit confusing.
@wzqxrys note to self: add tutorial / guide / help of some kind in game.
@seothen cool as ill make sure to play yours aswel, Thank you kindly, what did you think for your first jam? would you do it again? and what would you different next time?
@EVERYONE Is there anyone here who is also doing there first jam? what did you think for your first jam? would you do it again? and what would you different next time?
@binaryprinciple speed is pretty fast and notes collected are not in time with the beat as such they dont reach the player at a desired time, i was thinking some left and right movement for the player, and allowing the player to choose when the note is being played.
You know, I don't love the graphics, the random music is a little messy and the game really needed some more progressive difficulty. But something about it felt great. I love how the theme of keeping the beat going shows synergy with the randomly generated music. The music changes up, the screen melts away and after my run was done, the actual guitar riffs just perfectly end the whole experience.
I kept my run going for a solid 20 minutes, but I had to stop myself after reaching 100k. Capture.PNG
From a gameplay perspective, I think you could have been way meaner with the difficulty if you allowed players to slam back onto the track by pressing jump again in mid-air to give a little more control.
For a first Compo entry, this is absolutely fantastic.
@peringo
Amazing i cant believe you played it straight for a whole 20 minutes.
"The music changes up, the screen melts away and after my run was done, the actual guitar riffs just perfectly end the whole experience."
There is a great feeling in that moment, I'm glad you were able to experience it from such a long run.
Love your idea, makes me think adding a bit of left and right movement and that slam means i move all controls to a dpad config for arrows, wasd, and dpad on a controller. Nice.
Hard mode? Sure why not. Post LD i'll certainly consider it.
Thank you for playing so long and leaving feedback!
Wow, this graphics.
this was so fun and a very peaceful and meditative experience for me as well. the graphics, which i loved, reminded me of the cover art to the album galactic melt by com truise. i'm so into this type of aesthetic. and the original guitar song you played and recorded is beautiful. a real work of art!!!
@pusheeneiro :smile_cat:
@anystarabove Sharp graphics, peaceful sounds, a good contrast. I'll definately check out your reference soon enough. I think of my partner when I play that one, thank you for your kind words.
Wow, that was great. Music was peacefull and relaxing but I should say not really matching with the graphics :P I loved the music generation. I first thought you sticked to a key and added random notes but it has some kind of rhythm, probably more complex than that. Wonder how you made it
@ytaha Art was rushed, I did stick to E major scale detuned by 8hz and it is 100% random after the first 4 notes already set (not collected)
Gameover is a full recording.
Gameplay is the timing you add that note (also 100% random)
There is also a 1 in 10 chance the note will play my 12 string guitar (kinda sounds off) instead of the 6 string
The menu music is a set pattern. Ranges are L = low, M = Mid, H = High
L, M, H
H
M, H
H
Repeat
All random notes amongst that range(Low = E2, F#2, G#2, A2, B2, C#3), including blank notes which give it some flare.
Didn't read the gameplay and collected 102 spikes in my first gameplay (oops, got quite hecktic lol). Second time around tried to avoid them, still got 110 boosts :sweat: I'm terrible at this, but the music is just the bests
@spthiel You hit spikes and kept going, don't be so hard on yourself. Thanks for playing.
I loved this game! Great idea to expand on as music generation can lead to infinite possibilities!
@cometoverdrive Thank you!
I did start with the music generator before i knew what i was going to build, eventually the prolonged thinking clicked and i knew what todo.
I came back and played again. I am amazed how the game can generate something so melodic but different each time. You must know a lot about music theory. I really love the song at the end too. Beautiful guitar.
Wow, amazingly trippy, but in a good way! Very innovative too and I'm impressed that the music was procedurally generated. Is there a way to lose this game? Things got VERY fast and I kept hitting the red spikes but there didn't seem to be any way to lose. I just reached the end. Anyway, great job!
I especially like the way it is like a heavy drug trip :rofl:. And those repeated graphics adds some alcohol to it. Remember kids, don't do either :rofl: better play this!
Congrats on finishing your first LD! Great job with the randomized music. It fit well with the game. The trippy effect was initially overwhelming. I think that would be a good feature to toggle between off, low, and high.
Welcome back @anystarabove the guitar im using is my first guitar i received in grade 1 when i was 7. Still works fine. The twangy notes come from my 12 string that honostly doesn't sound great detuned by 8hz. I only know a little music theory, sticking to a single scale was my trick to make it sound somewhat consistant. Other than that its left up to the lords of chaos.
@jharler thanks, there isn't really a difficulty scale, song notes are your life, when you stop playong the song will end.
@furfel everything in moderation.
@aplite i like your idea of a low setting
Interesting! It's cool to see some entries that are a bit experimental. Took a little bit before I realized the soundscape was generated from picking up the notes and then visualized by the yellow triangles in the background. The trippy effect goes pretty well with the sound too although it slowed the game down significantly for me (but that might as well be a feature honestly).
That "game over" music is so nice!!! 🎶
wow, nice game and music
@silkworm-sweatshop Thanks for playing! definitely an experiment but i was super fun to make. The Wizard and The Slug, great name. Good luck with that project, looks massive.
@mattwoelk Cheers :beers: , Smoothes out that ending ;)
@eduardogacn thanks buddy
Neat concept. Definitely glad that I could toggle the trippy effect. The music got pretty chaotic after a while and didn't sound as good as at the start, but I guess that's what happens with randomly generated music.
@prepparedheathen I added the toggle after comments pointed that out, yeah 100% random and the 12 string didn't really suit but i left it in anyway
This is cool! I love the idea of making a song by collecting notes. It's cool that the more notes you have the more uplifting the song gets. I also love the soothing music played on game over. Great job!
Really interesting idea, but I think it could use some reworking. It took a really long time for me to realize that the notes I was collecting was generating a song, and that the yellow spikes represented those notes. The difficulty is also pretty wack. Dodging the spikes and collecting the notes becomes impossible pretty quick since they end up moving at such a fast speed. At the same time, however, dying is still really hard. Since the speed gets slowed down and the amount of objects gets reduced as your "health" drops, that means that even if you do get down to low "health", it gets really easy to build it back up again.
I liked it a lot! But I thing the green boost made the game to quick and chaotic. Maybe there should be some limitations for it, as I couldn't even tell what's going on.
at one point spikes them hides the next that comes
