I loved your voice acting XD
@itsjustjord Thanks. I tried to make the enemies seem unique.
hahaha, that was fun just listening to it. It is quite difficult to understand how the combat works though.
Haha wow nice! This one is definitely unique, you have a style of your own.
The first game I felt like I missed a lot, and list to the viper-frog demon. So the second and third runs through, I figured, well 5 points is 5% of my health, but it's like 50% of my damage!
So I went all-in on damage and attack. My third run through I had 40 hp to start, but 40 attack and 40 damage. I one-shotted all three of the first demons, but I know the devil is not kidding when he says he's the big leagues.
I liked the song, but it's a bit long to hear over and over without skipping, so I didn't try all that many times.
I wanted to sell my soul the last time just to try it, but for some reason on that run the buttons for my choices just never appeared? Or maybe they did, but I was looking at another tab waiting for the song, and when I returned they were gone? Either way I could not proceed.
IF I could change one thing, I would have a little line of text saying what the damage (or a miss) of each attack was.
Very unique game, nice work!
@pukami Have you played D&D or any RPG's. If not I'll give a rundown of my combat system, attack is accuracy, damage determines how much you deal, health should be straightforward, speed decides if you go first, defense determines if you get hit. Everything but health is hidden for the enemy but they also have stats. Thanks for playing.
@pkenney Yep, health is the dump stat. I probably should of had space to stop the song and reveal the buttons, I did think about it but didn't have time. Yeah, sometimes exiting and returning to the browser can cause things to be wonky. Yeah there were a few things I would have changed but I was happy that I basically executed my vision. Also would have been nice to have some special abilities.
Games like yours are the reason I stream jams. I love the individualism that gets expressed by your work. Keep it up. It was a pleasure to stream. I will probably stream it again soon and try to beat it. Thanks @dk5000p
@tigerj Thanks, a lot it was fun watching you play.I am excited to see what yourbr0ther chooses as his options. Yeah you missed the song
Fun game
Pretty good game. Some very nice 2d art.
@james-leib Thanks. Did you finish the game or which demon did you in?
This was surprisingly great! Couldn't beat it though :-/
@king-kujito Aw then you didn't get to hear the song. I suggest increasing your defense and lowering your health
@dk5000p Okay, the song was worth it haha
@pkenney Would you want a message like you missed by 5? I did kind of want to have more indication of what was happening. I toyed with the idea of your health getting erased and rewritten, since the idea is that this is your player sheet, also thought about allowing you to the enter the character's name. In the end I just stuck with the queues being audio but some of the timing could be off if the player just mashed roll button.
The audio cues let me know if I hit or missed (altho even w/out button mashing they did overlap a bit, on the second enemy, he would start talking before my "gun needs adjustment" line completed).
The "missed by 5" is definitely nice, but I would have taken any form of "combat log". Priority is to explicitly state a hit/miss. Next would be to know how much damage was dealt. Lastly the impact of the defense/attack roll, which is I think where the "missed by 5" idea falls.
An example game that has CRAZY complicated D&D-but-craizer combat math, but also has full transparency is Sil. That game, you have to read the manual to know what the numbers mean. But it stands as an example of just how full transparency can make a really complicated system more understandable. After playing it and reviewing the rolls, I really got a good sense of what impact a +1 in this stat or that really had.
Your game here doesn't face that supercomplexity problem, but since my decisions are all about trading off stat points it wouldn't hurt to allow some transparency into how the stats impact combat.
On the other hand, maybe that would all interfere with the enjoyment of the art and style of the game. Maybe the stat choices aren't the real point here!
@pkenney The stat choices are the only decision, but the point is how much someone would give up to save a friend. I was trying to make this feel very D&D, so all you know is turn order, but I do get how that might not play the best for game. Yeah I was trying to have it stay on the enemy's turn longer for the audio but it didn't seem to be exactly working.
intresting voice acting. Very PnP RPGesk combat. Could have used some play balancing regarding HP vs. skills for giving up abilities.
@adroitconceptions Yeah I tried to figure out how to go about that. I gave you the ability to critical hit, so you could decrease damage and increase attack, but in the end it is just best to keep decreasing health. Seems a lot of people are adverse to that. You don't need health if you can't be hit.
Kuddos to you for the devils song
@mmason Congrats to you to making it that far, did you fight or sacrifice? Yeah I was very happy with having fatigue rhyme with league.
@dk5000p I tried both, the fight didn't go well
@mmason Thanks for giving the game that much time. I will say, you can win the fight
Funny voice acting, i didn't expected it haha. Also the art is so simple but have that appealing that make you love it. The game itself is funny, i liked it. I missed some more feedback and clarity in the actions but it's fine for a jam. Good job!
@themarioga Yeah, I am kicking myself for not adding some simple particle effects. Also, submitted to minijam and forgot I needed a frog in the game so the last short time I had was spent drawing that and reuploading. Thanks for playing.
@dk5000p I would have tried again if I could have skipped the Devil's intro
@mmason Yeah, I was going to allow a skip and then didn't think of how to code it, since I wanted the buttons to appear and then later determined how to do it, not sure it qualifies as a game breaking bug but would be nice to fix.
Loved the funny voice acting and stat balancing.
@dzuvan Thanks, since that is the majority of the game. Did you get to hear the boss demon's song and did you choose sacrifice or fight?
Yes, I loved it, it reminded me of the devil from Tenacious d Pick of Destiny movie minus the heavy metal. I chose to fight and got one-shot since I've sacrificed health primarily :/
@dzuvan You are not the first to say that about the music, I love Jack Black, so all good. No one making the Noble sacrifice for Billy.
I always enjoy the quirky voice acting and SFX. I think this style of game leans on your strengths better than some of your previous work: the gameplay is interesting enough to engage with, but mechanically seems simple enough that you could let the voice acting & story shine.
Nice work! Keep it up.
@lenny-sirivong Thanks for playing, I hope you got to hear the demon's song
I love it! I want more of devil songs!
@vodish Yeah, inspired from the musical episode of Buffy. That character was awesome.
Your game was played on my stream ( twitch.tv/ursagames ) for the first day of Ludum Dare streams - you can find the timestamp of your game here: https://goo.gl/N2rkr8
@ursagames Thanks, now I am sad I didn't see it live. Oh well I'll watch the video. Thanks for putting in time streaming the games
I got stuck after I defeated the red demon... Iam clicking "OK" but nothing is happening
@najmm You need to decrease your skills by 5 more
I like the idea, but as a game it doesn't function that well, as the actual gameplay is just spamming the roll button. Also you can just like decrease health by 50 in the start and add 50 to speed and no one can touch you. But it's a fun, innovative game with quality voice acting:D !
@wie Yes, it is figuring out the optimal way to setup your stats and edit them as you go. The break in your turn and enemy turn needed to be a little more and I needed to have some delays on audio. Some particle effects and animation would have also added a lot. Besides mainly UI and polish it ended up being what I wanted to make. Thanks for playing.
well all i can say is the voice acting was the best thing ever
@Shapkofil I am happy you enjoyed. I might end up editing this for optimize jam.
That voice acting :D
@vlad11 We'll see how I do on audio this time, my last Ludum entry also had a lot of voice acting and the views were split. I feel this time it is less polarizing
@dk5000p In my opinion audio is OK :D
LOL! Do you play DnD or Tabletop RPGs? That is what this game sounds and feels like.
@Akusan Yep, that was the inspiration for the game. Forgot to roll a real d20 to get a rolling sound effect
I think that the game lacks feedback and is a bit too static, like nothing special happens on the screen. But one thing that I really like is that it feels like you had a good moment doing it and it can felt with the voice acting haha :p nice entry!
@Saering Yeah, I ended up putting a little too much time into voice acting. Will be optimizing this for optical optimize jam. Particle effects will be included and hopefully animation for the attacks.
the narration / voices are great!
@ericm I should have an updated version done this week, updating it for a jam. Hopefully can get the timing on the voices better allow a skip of the song or add more songs and make it random. Also, add a blood particle effect and hopefully an attack. Maybe have a simple background noise.
Good job voicing the different characters. Sometimes it was a bit hard to distinguish between the boss and the protagonist. For the lines that repeat often it may be a good idea to record multiple variations and pick them randomly. Also for lines are played in quick succession, shorter clips may be helpful because otherwise the voices keep breaking off.
Gameplay-wise I enjoyed the idea of having to level down instead of leveling up. I kept losing at the third opponent until I realized that you can increase your skills if you lower others. I found that a good way to get through the game is to increase attack and defense at the expense of health. That way I way able to get to the boss without losing any life points.
I made the decision to fight and was unfortunately locked in an endless loop, since I always missed but the boss didn't hurt me. I'm not sure whether this was a deliberate thing to force the player to choose sacrifice but with my level choices I was stuck.
I would have tried again but the boss's monologue was pretty long and unskippable, so I decided to leave it at a draw.
@cerno-b That should have been fixed by rolling a 20 on the die for an auto hit but it might take a long time. Yeah going to be making an updated version this weekend and try to get the audio timed better and add effects. Thanks for the feedback. Also, first step is adding a skip button
I kinda like the aesthetic of the game. There's a consistency and charm to it. Plus the way you can exploit the health points to be distributed to all the other stats was really funny.
Personally, I'm not exactly a huge fan of heavily stat-allocation game. While I think it's really fascinating that one can adjust their stats before every battle, I think the process is tedious, and hampers the fun. Still, I admit some bias against the game, so probably not the best to rate this game.
I also echo that the unskippable final boss music really reduced the replay value of the game.
Very unique with the voice acting, I laughed when the last demon just started singing. Art was bad im gonna be honest there. Good use of the theme with the stat sacrifice and then ultimate sacrifice at the end.
@digitaldude555 Yeah I am no artist but I think it was clear you were fighting demons. Yeah big goal was to do better in theme this time, since it was one of my weakest categories before. Thanks for playing.
Love your voice acting! It was so much fun. I saw the first comment and didn't know WHAT to expect, but it's incredibly endearing! And honestly, I like the art! I think it's creative and different than a lot of the art I've seen for other games and it sets your game apart. :) You did a great job!
@subtlydramatic Thanks, there definitely are people who like my art. I enjoy my art but also know it isn't amazing or anything. I happy you enjoyed it. I am trying to improve the game for Optical Optimize Jam this week, but also am working on a Hack and Slash game for weekly game jam, so we'll see.
Funny game, funky concept. It just need more polish. Good job for a compo!
@meskaline Thanks, yeah there was so much I wanted to add and I thought I had the time setup well to fit it in, but then I was submitting this to minijam and realized I needed a frog in the game, so scrambled to draw a frog. An extra hour of polish would have been nice. Updating it this week for Optical Optimize Jam. Hoping to add a simple move towards the player attack and being hit animations. Also, trying to get the audio synched up better.
Just played your game - thanks for submitting!
Don't listen to @meskaline, that voice acting is 100% carrying you through (no more polish required). 5 out of 5 stars on Audio.
devil.gif
fun and humor. good game!
@gamefive Thanks for the kind words.
Cool game! Would be nice if the effects of the different stats were explained somewhere. I kind of had to guess which ones are important (I ended up sacrificing my health and speed to increase all of my other stats)
I liked the voice acting! However, when my character was hitting the enemies they were both talking on top of each other so it was kind of hard to understand what they were saying.
@matank Yeah, hoping to fix all that in a post version build. You figured out which stats are the worst, so congrats.
That's a lot of voice recording work! It got a little repetitive but was still impressive. :p
I didn't feel like I understood the battle system -- after a failure or two I understood that I could ignore some skills and increase others like damage or defense, and that got me to the final boss, but of course I died fighting there. I wasn't sure what I should improve to survive that fight.
@gafblizzard Attack and defense are the most important. Thanks for playing. Maybe I should of included more variations for hitting and missing.
@dk5000p ah, thanks. I was wondering if I needed to increase damage, and I wondered if there was any downside to tanking speed.
@gafblizzard Only loss is opponent goes first but won't matter if they can't hit
@dk5000p I think I understood this game, I didnt read the other comments, but yes the weird overlapping of the audio was my favorite part. xD
Here is the video I recorded, if you would like to see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnTCOdtDt_o There should be time-stamps in the description.
@alext-design The link posted in your comment didn't seem to work, but I went to the initial post you made and was able to find your playthrough. I am happy you enjoyed the audio, sadly you didn't make it to the final boss, so you missed the song and there is the option of just sacrificing yourself to rescue Billy. Still it seemed like you had fun playing the game.
This was a pretty amazing game. Beautiful artstyle and perfect developer art, the voice acting was top notch and it only took me 20 attempts to beat. 12/10 would recommend!
@syrapt0r Thanks so much for the comment, yeah I could have made the gameplay clearer. I see this game could easily be mobile. I really should start porting my games and charging some money. It is great hearing that people had fun. Thanks for giving it 20 tries. I will add a skip for the song to make playing it a second time not as painful.
WTF DID I JUST PLAYED ... Broooooomance :') ! More seriously, that was fun, in an absurd way xD. But when you understand you can trade your HP for anything else, everything is easier :'). (I tried something like 40 attack, damages and defense, works really well xD)
I actually really like the art style, I was ready to hate this game and I was totally turned round. It was hard to know what was going on but it was interesting and I played it for longer than I was expecting. Good replay value. Good job
OK, so the art is super consistant, which is always a major plus. I admire you for sticking to an unconventional style. Main downside there is the UI text was out of style, but I appreciate that's really difficult to get.
Sound was fun. Added a lot of character to the game.
The gameplay was a little inpenetrable. It started to click with time, but certainly on my first run I didn't feel like my choices mattered all that much. Then I rached the 3rd enemy snake thing and it was barely taking any damage from me.
I saw some other comment mentioning this, but it felt pretty weird that I had the choice between losing 50% of my attack or 5% of my health.
But yeah, the presentation is a lot of fun, even if it looks like it may be offputting at first. You settle into the whackiness of it all!
Well done!
@lise-carreel Yeah, if you check my previous Ludum Dare entry and pretty much anything I have uploaded there is just absurdity to it. Yep, you figured out how to win. Not sure if showing the enemies stats would have added or subtracted from the game. Also, was thinking of giving the enemies random stat values to up the number of times you can play. Trying to get the audio to synch up better in post jam version. Also, balancing the abilities better would be nice. Originally I was going to allow you to persuade the demons but had to cut it due to time. Getting the UI a little neater is also a goal.
@arron-fowler Happy you replayed it a few times, to up the replay value even more I am going to allow you to skip the final demon's song. Will try to get the timing done a little better so the turn based will work better.
@hannaesthetic Yeah, this one of my first times doing a game almost completely based on the UI. It was tough getting everything lined up since Unity does the text on a canvas layer so does not show up in the actual game space. I was trying to just give some visual cues, since the game being purely audio can get confusing but the words didn't stand out and I see how they do not really fit in the world. I should have indicated what the abilities do. Yeah maybe should have had health be derived based on some other stat but in the end the game worked basically how I envisioned, just lacking some polish.
The green lizard thing with frog hat really got me.
Graphics are lacking, but voice acting lifts this game up nicely. Game is innovating and fits the theme on an unique way. It's really clever approach to have RPG mechanics but you have to decrease traits.
@Keppu Yeah, had to include a frog for minijam and needed to include it last minute. Otherwise I would have included a frog demon. Yeah, I wish I knew a good way to have better graphics besides spending six hours drawing something by hand and given it is a Compo entry I just don't have the time to do that. Yeah, last Ludum Dare I put my effort into humor and it seems my entries do fine in humor without me trying to force it, so wanted to emphasize the theme a lot since it was one of my weaker categories.
This is a super funny game. The voice acting is absolutely the best part of this game. The gameplay is okay, but it needs a bit more polish. Overall a fine LD game.
@jk5000 I am happy I was able to make you laugh. I am planning on Polishing this up, hopefully it isn't too hard
Loved the voice acting, and use of the theme. Could have made it easier to figure out how the enemies were damaging you, but I like the idea.
@rexpeppers Yeah, should have included an animation. It was all off audio. Ran out of time.
Hey ShadowKnightX476! Thanks for submitting your game for me to play on my livestream!
If you'd like to rewatch the playthrough, you can find it here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/346054830?t=01h41m08s

Hey, nice work, the voice acting was a great idea! Still needs a bit more polish - your cowboy comments on shot missed even before the shot reach the enemy, the voice of enemy plays simultaneously with your cowboy comments, it's just all over the place sometimes. If you manage to make some timed queue of events, then it would be at least 20 % cooler ;) The graphics is what it is and I kinda dig the MS paint style, but I'd spend more time on polishing UI, as much of it is often hidden behind enemies or at least cannot be read properly. The idea is pretty fun though!
@honey Yeah audio is tough in unity. Maybe I run the audio on a delay. I made an updated version but truthfully I am not sure it is much better. Gave the enemies attack visual but getting the audio timed right still wasn't working
Nice voice acting! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/piFMgX8tbrA
I did it! I don't know how, but there's video evidence! :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aYL5ijy2AA
@philstrahl Yeah, I think I fixed the bug. Thanks for playing. Not sure why all the arrows are misaligned.
