LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Lucky Number 13 by Simon Rahnasto 2018-12-07T17:33:32Z

Tremendously polished! Great work especially on the music, sound, writing, and oh my goodness your voice talent!

Loved to listen to every single text log. Writing was funny and well voiced. Lovely detail, well drawn art, great music.

Tip top work!

Honestly loved the direction. And it feels weird to say this, but the game feels most hampered by... well, the game bits.

Like, the visuals, the audio, the mood, it's all the highlight. But then the multiplayer game feels almost like it's a totally different thing. Honestly I feel the game would have been more fun with something better suited to the art direction. Heck, I enjoyed it most when I played it single player and just moved around, playing with the light in the middle, while rhythmically pressing the fire button.

Not gonna let my backseat driving on your design choices hamper your score though. Gameplay was a bit lacking, but I actually enjoyed just about everything else to it. You outlined a vision (heh) of making a game inspired by the beauty of the lights you see at night without glasses, and I really felt that beauty. So very nicely done, and genuinely one of my favourite entries so far!

OK, so the art is super consistant, which is always a major plus. I admire you for sticking to an unconventional style. Main downside there is the UI text was out of style, but I appreciate that's really difficult to get.

Sound was fun. Added a lot of character to the game.

The gameplay was a little inpenetrable. It started to click with time, but certainly on my first run I didn't feel like my choices mattered all that much. Then I rached the 3rd enemy snake thing and it was barely taking any damage from me.

I saw some other comment mentioning this, but it felt pretty weird that I had the choice between losing 50% of my attack or 5% of my health.

But yeah, the presentation is a lot of fun, even if it looks like it may be offputting at first. You settle into the whackiness of it all!

Well done!

Hi! Thanks for raising that, the issue should be fixed now!

It's an interesting concept, but I think it's hampered most strongly by the fact you're only selecting for one characteristic (one of the other comments said that).

I found the music to be a bit too repetitive. Personally, I feel that if you're adding something to your game that's not adding to the game's quality or even drags down other aspects of it, it may be worthwhile not adding it. In this case, I think your game would have been better without the music. The music kinda demands attention and really it's not the thing that's worth paying attention to in this game.

I don't mind the art, the art actually doesn't demand attention and it lets you focus on the main bit of the game, so to me that's less of a problem.

But yeah, the gameplay felt possibly a bit to slow/simple. As I said, only one trait to breed for, it meant there weren't really any complicated decisions that needed to be made, nor was the game fast enough that I had to make difficult choices quickly.

I hope that helps! It sounds harsh but don't be discouraged, I think this is not many steps away from being able to become an interesting game!

There's a lot of good in here, so it's probably quicker for me to just say the things I didn't like about it, and you can just assume everything else was great, and I'll shoutout the bits I loved most.

The music was a bit too repetitive. I think most of the games could have been fine with this music, but the fact your game has (comparatively) so much content means the music had a bit more time to grow stale.

It feels like it could have benefited from being just a little bit faster (especially the moving platforms)

It felt a lil' weird having the game as polished as it was (you even had footstep sound effects!), but then for the big bloody sacrifices to be so quiet.

There was a visual bug of somekind where I could see the sky for a split second behind the bits where one ground tile ended and another one began? Just these lines of blue going through the ground.

Asides from that, the art was great, the platforming movement was well done (particularily happy that nothing bugged out when I put myself between the roof and a lift going up!). I am so happy there's a save game system. The real crown though was the level design. So much decor, nothing about it felt rushed, and I had a habit of always winding up in the right place, so I feel like the level was directing me really well.

Well polished, thematic, fun!

Nice work! A lovely mechanical adaptation of the theme.

Main thing that weirded me out was how some of the levels (earlier ones) had a person you could push off from the start without having to move any of the other passengers out of the way. It felt a bit unnecessary. That's just a total nitpick though.

But yeah, great concept, solidly executed!
