This game is awesome. It may not be so flashy, but I love the atmosphere, graphics and sound. It has that old school feeling of games like Wolfenstein 3D and other similar old 3D games :)
looks like minecraft)
Loved the artstyle and the general feel of the game, the map looks awesome.
This one is a nitpick but I have to complain about something. If you're going for the 1990 FPS controls you should probably let people use the arrows since that's how those games were played, it feels kinda clunky to rotate with A and D.
I love the feel of this game, the graphics and audio fit really well to the overall mood. Also, nice take on the theme!
Nice entry with a real eerie ambiance, nice implementation of the theme in a way that fits the world and gameplay. Pros: - Nice ambiance and world - Straightforward concept that's taught by gradual introduction rather than forced tutorials. - Nice application of theme that fits with the gameplay.
Cons: - Lighting on nearby blocks seems a bit too "shiny" for the style. - Movement & turning speed feels a tad too slow at times.
Great job! :)
I liked how this reminded of old eye of the beholder era 3d dungeon crawlers. Could have been a bit more entertaining as the puzzles get quite similar to each other in time and going back to a location seems a bit tedious, but aesthetically a very good game.
Wow, incredible game. I managed to win it with remaining only 9 lives, so nicely set difficulty. The was only one thing I missed - moving with arrows.
Looks very good, was a very fun game with lots of fun exploration, managed to get all gems and embraced the light, got super intense in the late game, it felt like there were hoards of enemies in every direction. I wish there were enemies that did more than walk towards you and had trouble reading my health and gem count in the low ceiling ice came, love the way music fades in for the dungeons. Overall a great game and by far the best compo I have played so far.
EDIT: Still good game but lowered my overall rating due to the dev's abuse of the system by leaving 90+ reviews in under 2 hours and not leaving a single comment, almost certainly did not actually play any of those games.
This game gives me the Zelda feelings :)
I really like the billboarding sprites and the overall look, mainly the monsters and trees. Gameplay wise it is fairly straightforward. which has its charm.
I liked the mood, and the sounds helped to figure out what was happening (like getting hit from behind). I barely managed to beat it, running from enemies with 5 health remaining. Quite fun, overall :)
Good sense of atmosphere and beautiful music. I was missing a sprint button but that might just be my chronic impatience.
This should be a jam entry. [You aren't allowed to use the Minecraft brick texture in a compo entry.](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/rules)
Although, I did enjoy the game. The visual aesthetic was nice and the music was pretty good(although a bit quiet). I think I beat the game. I got all 50 gems and walked through the doorway at the end, but then the game restarted. I'm assuming that was intentional.
Good work though.
@cmlsc I am aware of the rules, i didn't use the brick texture from minecraft. However, it may seem like they are the same textures, it's just that they're both 16x16 and mainly composed from the same colors.
I don't think "music" should be the first thing you adress when rating a game, but I gotta say: the music is really nice. I can see myself listening to the soundtrack while making a game of my own. The art, environment, and overall mood are nice, and it feels like a polished game. The controls weren't so great, though. The inability to strave costed me health points many a time. What I would suggest here is to either let the player look side-to-side with the mouse or with the arrow keys instead of "a and d," and let those be side-to-side movement. This would make avoiding enemies much more fun. Good work :)
Pros:
Really great game. Fantastic level design. Smooth progression, nice puzzle that isn't too frustrating to figure out.
Lots of angry snowmen.
Cons:
Didn't like the controls, hitting spacebar for so many enemies was too much.
Most of the audio was well done, but one of the ambient tracks sounded like I was actually getting hit by something.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game! It's so great. I didn't like the fact that I couldn't use the mouse to move, I understand that it is a stylistic choice used for nostalgia, but I'm too young to feel that.
I made a quick version with mouse controls :-) it was cool and made me like the game more. I love your game, GG.

I was tempted to do a let's play tutorial because there are some hidden secrets to beating this. That's all I'll say about that.
Now about the game itself. The mechanics are basically trivial compared to the graphical features. You used a "new-school" engine to replicate an "old-school" raytracer effect. I'm not sure if you built this "meta-engine" for this game only or if you've used it in the past but I love it.
Enough fanboi over the engine tech. The graphics are a beaut. The color palette is perfect for the setting, and really helps distinguish different areas. The pixel art is spooky, as it should be. It's very easy to get lost in this world, and I think in that sense, it's a very successful game.
Lastly is the audio. The subtle entrance of music at certain cues is perfectly timed and well fitting for the mysterious air. One of the coolest features of the audio, aside from the various location soundtracks, is the effects observed near the diamond tower in the center. For the player who has not yet come across the green key, this place wraps itself in many layers of mystery.
Honestly I put in about 40 minutes to this game. Some of the time was frustrating, but hey, would definitely recommend to someone looking for a challenging adventure game with a retro vibe. Great job!
Where's that music people are talking about? Somehow I'm not hearing it, even though I do hear the "swish" sound when attacking.
Anyway, it's hard to be original in my feedback here. As others have said, this is a rather solid game.
Only thing I'd wish for is a map of the level showing where I was and what doors/switches/items I've encountered. Sometimes it's easy to step into something by accident, and then with all the enemies it's difficult to find time to figure out what happened.
Nice work! This game created a very tense atmosphere. The controls made it feel old-school, which was a nice mix with the graphics. The inability to circle-strafe and look around freely made it a tradeoff between movement and examination. In idle moments this didn't matter, but when enemies were around it was a big deal!
The way that enemies were slower but infinitely respawned was a cool design decision. I had to dash through packs of enemies without being totally aware of my surroundings, and it was nice and scary. When I explored the wrong place and had to backtrack, I would come back upon huge roaming packs I had left behind me, creating moments like this: https://imgur.com/Lma2uta or this https://imgur.com/T0F9flw
There was another moment when I thought I was alone and took damage, I whirled around and there were two evil snowmen. Had they just spawned, or were they following me in my blind spot??
There was a cool creepy atmosphere to it all, reinforced by nice work on the audio and a great variety of places and enemies (even if I did deal with the different enemy types all in the same way: knockback attack and sprint past).
I liked the way that stepping on a box created a glimpse of the thing it unlocked. I know I had to remember the distinct graphics of the areas so I'd know where to go next from the glimpse... and for the first few I could. But eventually I reached a state where there were huge roaming packs everywhere so I had to sprint through areas without looking around. And I lost my way and couldn't figure out where to go next. After circling the same three or four areas looking for that side door I must have missed, I eventually got totally surrounded and died.
Very nice entry - a compelling experience that I enjoyed!
great game
Love the level design, art, music.. well basically the whole package. Minor stuff I would nitpick is that I lacked either a sprint button, or make the player move a little faster, which might make the game a lot easier afterwards so balancing may be an issue, but as it is now it seems greatly balanced (finished with 7H).
Maybe add some sounds for the enemy, either a spawn sound or just a creeping sound so he player knows hes not alone.
Overall audio really fits the beautiful retro graphics and atmosphere in this game is great.
PS: weird thing, the scariest was the snowman for me.
Please include a Mac build, I would really like to play this!!!
The game is really solid. I think some more ambient sound effects would help with the mood but I do like the music linked the specific areas. Walking speed could be increased a bit.
Great mood! Quite a lot of enemies though, but you could easily dodge them. Thanks for the game!
it's pretty nice! i really like dungeon themed games and this game wasn't a exception also for who's using mac im sure you can run it under wine, not certain but sure
My Wine Doesn't support 3D Games for some reason
@Game_Coder28 i think it have something to do with the directX rendering in wine wich is not nearly done yet, if you play your 3D games in OpenGL they should work better
Managed to beat this one - the last few gems were in a sneaky spot, but I guess it's natural I'd want to check there first. I was panicking over where I could have left something behind. The graphics are great for the era you seem to be going for, and the sound's pretty nice too.
I have similar nitpicks to a few other folks, in that movement was a little hard to work with. I think if you had added strafing it would have made a huge difference. Also, I was able to use my sword to tap buttons through some barriers, and sequence break a little.
I was a little sad that there wasn't an end screen - the game just starts over. Still, super solid entry; thanks for making it!
@game-coder28 I've ported the game to mac, please see the top of the entry page! I don't know if it works, since i can't test it, if you would try it, i would greatly appreciate it.
90+ reviews given in a very short amount of time, without leaving a SINGLE comment anywhere
Great game, lot's of content for this amount of time. Good job!
One thing I felt was lacking is mob walking sound, it was hard to determine where they are. Also it felt a bit unfair when mob spawned right in your face.
Very well done
My only complaint is that I wish the movement was faster. Really great game. So great, that I honestly find it hard to believe that you made this in 48 hours. If I'm wrong then just take it as a compliment. Great work. Love the music too.
Can confirm that the mac port works. I don't understand how you have played 95 games... seems a bit suspicious imo
This is a great game! Kind of anticlimactic when you reach the end of the game, but it was a challenge. Reminds me of the games I used to play as a really young kid. I think one thing that would have made it even better for me personally, was if there was some footsteps when the player moves. Would have completed the atmosphere. But kudos, great job on a great game!
@oliverlevay I can understand that it's suspicius, it's just the way i rate games on Ludum Dare. I pick a lot of games, rate them based on other's feedback, and then i go back to them one by one, and then i give feedback according to my personal experience. I do this because it's almost impossible for me to download, rate, and give feedback one by one. By the time i do 3 games, others have already done 10, and this results in me begging for feedback.
@Gulyasarni66 wow, I honestly don't know where to start. This is wrong. You're gaming the system. Not only are you propelling yourself forward at the expense of others, what's worse is you deprive the people who are unlucky to get you as their reviewer of the honest feedback they could have received. I don't think you're a bad person, but you need to understand a few things here:
Everyone worked hard on their games, they deserve the same attention to their game as yours got. You have a FULL MONTH to rate games and get rated yourself, there was absolutely no reason to pull this stunt. This is not just a one-way platform for you personally, it's a community. People rely on you having actually played their game before you rate it! By simply faking reviews you are nullifying a part of what they accomplished. You would not want anybody to do this to your game, so don't do it to others!
The goal here is to make an awesome game, to level up in experience, and to meet new people who are into the same things.
@udo I agree with you
@udo Yeah, it was a dick move, and i regret it now. I won't leave the ratings like that though, i've already made a list of the games that i've "rated", And i've started playing and leaving feedback. I will play 5-10 games a day, and by the end of the month, every single game that i've rated will have an actual opinion and rate. To my defense, i NEVER intended those fake ratings to be permanent at all.
@Gulyasarni66 thank you for understanding, and I think it's awesome that you are going to fix it. <3
really liked the lvl design in this game, not once did I feel lost.
I "followed" the game during the development process (i looked at all the blog posts) and was really excited to try it. I really liked the audio, graphics and the mood. A problem for me in this game is that i just don't think it was that fun or satisfying to play. As it is a puzzle game it is important to go back and see what you missed, but it was so annoying because the player moved so slowly and, most importantly, turned slowly. Also sometimes it felt like enemies spawned INSIDE me so I couldn't do anything against them. I might be to criticizing but I don't really like this take on the theme actually. A lot of people went with it but it feels more like "The more you play the harder it gets" which is the premise of literally (almost) every game out there. I would prefer if the theme was weaved into more interactive features. But thats just my opinion, and i liked it overall :)
I wonder how you made the level design?
I like the graphics style and I love the ambient music that seems to change depending on location. The controls feel a little sluggish, I wouldn't mind a speed-up of the game (including the monsters), and combat wasn't that satisfying (but that's hard to pull off in these types of games). Had some fun though, the game seems polished and bug-free which is a feat in itself.
@fangzhangmnm With lots and lots of planes and cubes in unity. It was painful :P
Really good atmosphere and good use of music. I liked that each castle/dungeon had a different soundtrack. Adding the short cut to the door opening was a very welcome addition. I wasn't a fan of the controls, turning around was too sluggish for me, I would have liked to just look around with the mouse.
I also didn't like how the monster would just keep spawning in front of you in certain spots. It took a while before the first monster showed up which was good, but then around the next corner there were suddenly 5 more monsters and more spawning. And while I like that you have a bunch of different monsters there doesn't seem to be any difference between them, other than the sprite.
Overall good effort and I enjoyed finishing your game.
That's a nice little adventure but it plays awfully slow. Also is badly lacks mouse look. And the drawing distance is surprisingly low for that kind of graphics.
This was fun, but a bit slow. I liked the concept of more enemies appearing the more gems you have, but it made it a bit too hard to get past ~25 gems. The graphics were excellent (though I had a few gripes, like some glitches with the grass and the skybox actually looking like a box), and the music was very well done (although the main forest could have used a track as well). Good job!
I reviewed your game in my LD40 compo compilation : https://youtu.be/WCYF7ixLX8k?t=428 it's in french but don't hesitate to ask me for translation :)
