That did not feel like a one-person jam game. Wow. This game is extremely good.
The only thing I would fix is the menu screen. It would be nice if it worked with a mouse because I thought it was broken at first.

demy 2015-04-22 13:40

This game really has volume. I was surprised when discovered the size of the map. Really nice graphics.

nonentheless 2015-04-23 18:37

Pretty nice entry with great audio, well done :)

pushmepullyu 2015-04-23 18:39

The potato does nothiiing :D Good work haha!

gogo199432 2015-04-23 18:42

Nice game and audio, but simply couldn't figure out how that teleporter works, or what I'm supposed to do with the potato. So got fustrated :D

kasmilus 2015-04-23 18:44

I tried restarting few times to get another weapons but every single one was hard to use or even useless, looks like the game would be great fun with planned placement of weapons. I like graphics and sounds also world seems to be really big, impressive for a game made in just 3 days!

smilingcat 2015-04-23 18:56

The various weapons were great, and the music had a real Metroid feel. Great job!

de_von 2015-04-23 22:44

Good game, but a bit hard for my taste.

voider 2015-04-23 23:07

Impressive work! Congratz.
I got brick breaker in the first two runs and got frustrated. Thanks I read the notes and played again.

pixzleone 2015-04-24 11:48

Very nice, my favorite jam this far!

chaoseed 2015-04-24 11:59

Pretty fun! Good graphics for LD. I like the sound effects too. ;) It seemed like there was some good gameplay there, although...I got the "transmat" but I can't figure out what it does. I mean, is it completely random, or is there some order to what gets transmatted?

Other than that, though, good job!

depp 2015-04-24 22:20

@Chaoseed: The transmat randomly selects a monster on screen and teleports it to a random location on screen… unless there are no monsters on screen, in which case it teleports you instead.

Overall, pretty nice work. The game controls well and it has nice artwork. However, no matter what room I went in I could not progress. Some of the rooms were impossible with the weapon because the ball would not bounce back down due to a lack of ceiling and in others it was just impossible to aim correctly and avoid being hit. I didn't feel like this was difficult in a fair way. I tried five or six different rooms and could not pass any of them because of those issues.

flatgub 2015-04-25 06:41

Loved it!

retrogradeorbit 2015-04-25 06:57

Really slick. Expansive. Liked the music a lot.

jhrrsn 2015-04-25 08:23

You made a crazy amount of content - well done! Some of the weapons felt a little unwieldy - they were certainly unconventional though! Good job :)

carduus 2015-04-25 08:37

Hilarious weapons, "potatoooe!" :)
nice entry, feels like metroid, challenging.
-> i think ennemies could me more interresting: bullet thing is often punishing while they focus you dirctly, try some patterns (circle, cross etc) or make them focus you with bullets including the same physics than potatoes (curvy).
Nevertheless, i really enjoyed this entry, and it's nicely tied to the theme. Music is great too!

dkoding 2015-04-25 09:50

Liked it. Do you have control over the transmat at all? Potato did not collide with monsters. Great game, good level design, maybe a tad hard.

s0lll0s 2015-04-25 10:19

Started three times now, the first time I got a potato, the second time the shield spawner, impossible to do anything with both. The third time I got the fish schooler, which also seems highly useless because of the absolute lack of control (the fact you have to hit twice also doesn't help); I pulled through and got a potato as a second weapon again... Well made game, rather polished, nice graphics and audio but the weapon balance did not make it fun for me.

Well-placed delays are your friend, as are animations that communicate enemy intelligence. There's no delay between an enemy noticing you and shooting at you, and then there's suddenly three things on screen spamming rapidly. There's no real window for reaction, things just sort of happen. Another thing is that the physics are fairly sluggish, trying to fine-tune your momentum to jump over tiny pits can a pain. Save points are aplenty to compensate, though this is more of a duct tape fix to the underlying difficulty issues.

Having said that, the weapons you get are fairly imaginative, and additionally each of them seems to have a strength and a weakness type of thing. It would've ruined this if the weapons were just "shoot forward in 4 different ways". Something like going around zapping things with the transmat is just crazy. I actually like that even if the other commenters might've wanted something traditional, I find it gives the game this roguelike unpredictability vibe. Like a feeling of genuine exploration where the world and all its items aren't just obviously handcrafted for the player character.

The production's slightly programmer arty, spiced with ugly sfxr beeps and all, but there's relatively a lot to see and do, with no need to sugarcoat lack of content with flashy graphics.

Overall, I can see it's a good effort. It's a soft 4/5 entry with room for rethinking some details, and I hope you take it further.

nanolotl 2015-04-25 12:36

Really good game. Played all the way through, getting all 6 weapons. Was fun, but most of the weapons just came down to pressing attack and hoping for the best. Not having the weapons in a set order also made it difficult to tell if a room was not possible with your current set of weapons, or if it was just hard.
Through out the play through the audio (which was nice when it was working) got glitchier and glitchier until it stopped working altogether.
Criticisms aside, the platformer physics and controls were very well designed and the graphical style all meshed well. A terrific game.

sbarrio 2015-04-25 12:53

I love the gameplay and weird weapons. It has a very "Cave Storey" feel to it :)

photon 2015-04-25 14:38

That was... a little confusing for awhile. For a good part of the game I was simply spamming the Transmat hoping it would warp my enemies to bad places and not warp me to same bad places. The change in music from room to room was a little too stark for my liking as well (am I playing an exploration game or an edgy combat game?) Alas, I still managed to find everything and I had fun doing it. :)

arcturusdeluxe 2015-04-25 15:29

Very cool game. Impressed at the size of the map, and the variety of music. Interesting weapons too, though some seem to rely too much on hoping they're go in the right direction for my liking. Good stuff!

mike-cullingham 2015-04-25 19:04

Nice game. Pretty hard and my wrist is getting sore from spamming the attack key.

trasevol_dog 2015-04-25 20:05

Hard but great game !

zcience 2015-04-25 21:35

I think this game is one of the best games I have played so for in the jam. Really well thought out levels, enemies were difficult to kill with the brick breaker (I din't get any other weapon to kill anything in multiple playthroughs) and the randomness overall is pretty interesting. The sliding effect really irritated me, when trying to make a secure jump and I just slid off the edge and died...
Audio is superb, graphics are great, the game is funny and it runs really well. Great job!

frozenfire92 2015-04-26 00:11

Fun game with a lot to do. Some of the weapons were quite difficult and left you in some awkward/difficult situations. Definitely an old school hard feeling. Great work!

mental-atrophy 2015-04-26 02:54

Nice job. Really glad you were able to finish this up in time for the jam. The extra day made a lot of difference, with so many areas and item types. The thing that surprised me the most was that you even took time to make the camera more complex than just following the player entity.

depp 2015-04-26 05:05

@Mental Atrophy: About the camera... I wish I had had an extra 30 minutes to work on the camera alone, but I just used the FOLLOW_PLATFORMER setting in Phaser. All it does iskeeps the player in a box in the center of the screen, partway down.

phi6 2015-04-26 21:52

Huge game map! Really enjoyed it, very difficult but the platforming physics was well done. I also made a Metroidvania-style platformer so was pleased to see other similar entries. The save system seems pretty well implemented which is basically unheard of in jam games and the javascript game engine seems smooth and responsive. Good job!

franklins-ghost 2015-04-27 14:11

Impressed with how much you got into a solo game. Did find the teleporter tricky to use, wasn't really sure how it worked at first.

celisoft 2015-04-28 19:55

I like the game a lot. This is definitively the type of game I like to discover. Moreover, you have used PhaserJS instead of that damn UnityPlayer. Good work !

jhell 2015-05-02 13:14

Impressive entry, lots of content, good polish, very nice music. I like your weapons, they take a bit to get used to but serve different purpose in the LD. The thing that bothered me were the controls, I felt like the character was too "slippery".

cdgugler 2015-05-03 03:38

Incredibly polished and huge game. Great job!

lucatode 2015-05-08 12:26

Brilliant! Monkeys with a gun kills people too :D (Eddie Izzard) :D

lucatode 2015-05-08 12:38

Sorry, the previous comment was for another game! that I was rating. Anyway I like this game =) Funny =)

recursor 2015-05-08 13:33

Indeed the game is difficult, but I enjoyed it. Well done!

puppetmaster 2015-05-08 22:52

Very smooth!
+ Overall (jokes)
+ music and sound fx
- controlling direction of the ball
- double jump is to fast for me
Very well made!!
