| Apr 24 20:20:52 | Pong Quest | ♥ 1 | I did it! chrome_2018-04-24_15-15-53.png So yeah, what can I say about this game? It's pong. The execution is well done and it's as appealing as pong gets. But other than the setting of "championship", the game doesn't directly have any sort of mix of incompatible genres (specially if you consider that pong can be played competitively). The game was mostly solid, and the music was great for it. However, I did encounter a pair of glitches here and there, where the ball would just pass through the paddles (happened both to mine and the opponent's). I must admit, I was surprised when I started finding opponents with larger paddles. But since the first mimicked my movements (so it was easy to outmaneuver) and the second glitched out (2 of my goals were balls that went through the paddles), it was not a big of a challenge. But all in all, it's a solid entry. Here's hoping you later consider adding something else. I don't know, power ups, or some weird story mode or something. Even character selection of sorts would have made this mix something else to the classic pong. In behalf of my team, keep up the good work. Let's see what you can come up with next! 🐳 | |
| Apr 24 20:35:11 | 14m 19s | [VVV] - Vibrant Voxel Vengeance | ♥ 2 | This guy followed me while giving me the cold shoulder for a minute or two. VibrantVoxelVengeance_2018-04-24_15-27-06.png First of, I'd like to recommend you to pack the thing in a convenient Zip or something. I went through some hurdles about downloading files and ordering folders (with Windows being as paranoid as ever, saying it could be a virus). Once I actually got to play the game, I had some fun time. I like how there's a variety of enemies, and the tongue-in-cheek quests. There's some fun to be had in here. I actually laughed when I shoved a cat(?) with the shield and it went flying away. My one concern were the quest givers. Sometimes they'd just give me the quest, and some other times, they'd take a long time either appearing or just hanging around. Can't tell if those were glitches or not given the nature of the pun quests, but still... Anyhow, great work. Love voxels. In behalf of my team, we wish you the best of luck in your future projects. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 24 20:49:57 | 14m 46s | Modern Bowlfare | ♥ 0 | About the same as I'd get in real life bowling. Modern Bowlfare - LD41- win - b3_2018-04-24_15-45-15.jpg This was a fantastic game. It's just my kind of silly. Bowling but with grenades would have been fantastic on it's own, but actually having the thing occur in a CoD-esque map was a touch of genius. Mechanically speaking, the game works great, and getting strikes feel so satisfactory. It's a bit hard to tell how charged the thing is because the reticle is so small, but it's not a major problem. I only encountered a pair of frustrating elements. At one point, I couldn't even tell where were the pins, since the camera put me in the wrong position. And in another, I accidentally clicked while the camera was moving and my grenade went out flying in a random direction. Regardless, excellent work. I'll be forwarding this one to my team and see if they check it out later on. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 24 21:05:24 | 15m 27s | CrossingDeads | ♥ 1 | These zombies ain't crossing no street. CrossingDead_2018-04-24_15-59-39.png The graphics were fantastic and the music selection really got me pumped up. The theme was just great, and I thought I'd have a great time. However, I found this unplayable, and I didn't know what I was doing after some minutes and retries. I tried playing it on WEBGL and thought that the issues were because of that. But then I downloaded it, played it with keyboard and then with a controller, and now I believe this is just bugged. The playable character can barely and very hardly move. Even when it has the moving animation, it will only move about a space when holding a direction, so I had to mash the buttons to move around. I never understood the point of not standing next to the light, and I never got cones. If anything, because I moved, I somehow glitched the other zombies, and now they won't cross the street. And just like with @riktothepast , the cars just stopped passing by. I don't know if the problems are my computer or the like, but you should check and see if this is a common problem of sorts that can be fixed. This looked great, but I just couldn't manage to do anything of it after many tries. Do let me know if this is addressed, since this looked like a game I'd have a lot of fun with. I'll contact my team and see if they come across similar situations. Anyhow, we're looking forward to seeing more from you! 🐳 |
| Apr 24 21:16:23 | 10m 59s | Rookie Raccoon | ♥ 2 | Airplane stealth game? I'm in! Took me a round or two to get used to the controllers, but afterwards, it became a smooth ride. I was actually having a lot of fun measuring the speed of the lights and just barely making it through between them while avoiding detection. This game has so much potential for levels and features if you decide to further work on it later on. Neat setting, and the spritework was great as well. Mechanically wise, I'd say it does everything as it's intended to do it, with no glitches nor anything gamebreaking. My only problem is that, even though the score resets on death, the enemy spawnrate doesn't. So a single detection a few rounds in got me a lot of enemies while my score was still 0. You should check on that. Anyhow, I had a blast. On behalf of my team, we really hope to see what else you can come up with next, and if there'll be more of Rookie Raccoon. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 24 21:26:14 | 9m 51s | Yum Some!! | ♥ 1 | I was so close to quitting after many, *many* failed attempts at the carrot dropping minigame. I'm glad I didn't. chrome_2018-04-24_16-23-05.png I liked this game overall. I originally thought it'd be very frustrating, but other than the second mini-game, it wasn't so bad. Everything was very well timed, giving each mini-game it's own sense of urgency without making them unfair ~~other than the second mini-game, which made me want to crush my mouse~~ Overall, great design. There's fun time to be had in here, and some mini-games could even be seen as fun with some endless modes. I'm sure that my team will like to check this one out later on. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 25 22:07:36 | 24h 41m | Cosmic Cadence | ♥ 1 | The visuals and the music are so fitting. This boss actually puts a smile on my face. chrome_2018-04-25_17-02-17.png Congratulations on making such a good gem on your first jam. This kind of rhythm game gave me the good flashbacks of Patapon and Crypt of the Necrodancer, so it's quite well worth a playthrough or two. At first it's a bit hard to mix between remembering which button is which color and dodging the bullet hell, but it gets so satisfying as time goes on. I encountered a small problem though. In the screenshot I sent, on my second playthrough, I faced that boss again. After 2 full minutes of fight, the health was still not dropping. I mean, it was tanky the first time I fought him, but the second it was outright invincible. Or at least it gave that impression, since it wasn't so hard the first time around. Do check on that. All in all, great work. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see what you can come up with in the future, since this submission was a blast. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 25 22:20:00 | 12m 24s | Total Carnage | ♥ 1 | Upside down with cars circling me. This is my life now. chrome_2018-04-25_17-14-44.png The game's mechanics and visuals are superb. Surprisingly hard and fast paced with good-looking minimalistic style. While some things like waiting too long between rounds (half a minute for the first cars to spawn feel like an eternity) and the car becoming immovable from time to time, I had a genuine good time with this game. Are you considering expanding on it later on? It'd be interesting to see where a game like this goes, with different guns and vehicles. It could really do with some refining or beingable to aim in other directions. But the driving does feel right, and the crashes are a sight to behold. Keep up the good work. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see what other games you can come up with in future jams. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 25 22:43:09 | 23m 09s | Mouse Racer (Racing game + Point and Click adventure) | ♥ 0 | I managed to pull off an off-road hiking experience ApplicationFrameHost_2018-04-25_17-37-32.png Yep, this is clearly a very quick experiment you made, but I still couldn't help but think that it makes up for a weird interesting experience. I actually went around a few times trying to see the fewest clicks it'd take me to do a lap (got it below 20). Heck, at one point I even thought about taking shortcuts, which became a high-risk, high-reward scenario. I had to go up mountains to get a better sight of the road and then try to click before I clipped through the map. Obviously an unintended thing, but still a hilarious thing that can be done in experiments. For what it's worth, it was a neat experiment, and it's great that having so little time didn't stop you from participating on the jam. [Speaking for my team](twitter.com/whalesandgames), we're looking forward to seeing a full fledged project of yours next time around. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 25 22:55:39 | 12m 30s | Tharkarys Invasion - Last Line of Defense | ♥ 1 | So, getting just a bit overwhelmed here... LDJAM - TD+Shoot'emUp_2018-04-25_17-50-01.png Friendly reminder to people to read the instructions. I was having a bad time before reading that **shift** slows down the ship and **x** can be used to build turrets. Afterwards, I was having a better appreciation for this game. For what it's worth, it's a short but good time. The genres are not a very impressive mix, but placing the turrets and seeing them work actually alleviated a lot of the problems that could have otherwise made this a bland experience. Moving around is floaty, but Shift did improve the movement a lot. At times I wondered if it could be the other way around: Be faster while holding shift and just move slower overall. Regardless, a good entry here. Rough on the edges, but certainly something worth building on. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would like to see your next projects. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 25 23:19:48 | 24m 09s | Snail and Salt | ♥ 1 | I'm impressed. The slowest runner out there is actually a very thoughtful puzzle game. I originally mashed my keyboard trying to see what to do, until I saw there were buttons in the bottom for me to press. Silly me. Anyhow, first of all, I really enjoyed the theme of a racing game with a snail. Very silly, but my kind of silly. Limiting the time to do options actually made this into an intense fast-paced experience as the game progressed, presenting an actual challenge for those that want to get all of the salad. I mean, who wouldn't. Excellent work there. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) wishes you the best of luck on this and all your future projects. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 25 23:28:40 | 8m 52s | Celauss - An Epic Realtime CCG Space Battle Game | ♥ 1 | I... don't even know what happened. But I'll take it! chrome_2018-04-25_18-23-22.png I admit I didn't read the instructions. Just clicked on an ability, told me to press on the screen or something, and I suddenly won. That without properly understanding the game. So I decided to replay it and actually see how the game operated. I ended up having fun with the placement of ships and such. The graphics and music are good for this kind of project, but mechanicwise, clicking anywhere made it too easy. I mean, I played my few rounds, and my fastest one was still the one where I pressed around the screen without knowing what I was doing. It could have done a bit more on the tactical side. Maybe prevent units from being spawned too far from others? Regardless, it's always good to see people make it through the horrors of time limits. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) is looking forward to seeing you around on future LDs. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 26 01:45:15 | 2h 16m | Defender of the Road | ♥ 0 | Here's my road just moments before the destruction on one of my runs. chrome_2018-04-25_20-40-15.png Not bad for a first LD. I'm impressed that you actually could make one that's free of glitches and as intense as this one. It does start a bit slow, but it really escalates into something far more challenging. An speeding up nonstopping wave of enemies is something I'd like to see in more Tower Defenses. Just the basics, but with an increased pace to focus on placement and upgrading but without too much clutter. There's certainly aspects to improve in here, such as how the score appeared behind the enemies, making it hard to read. But still, I had a fun time on this one. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would like to see more of you in the future, so keep working towards more LDs. See you next time! 🐳 |
| Apr 26 16:09:47 | 14h 24m | Tsun Tsun Button Mash | ♥ 2 | Hey there. I remember you from Infernus (don't think I'll ever forget about it). Glad to see that there's some branching going on and trying new stuff. First off, congratulations on making it to the jam. The art is great and, since I'm a sucker for clicker games, I wanted to give this one a shot. It's solid and functional, but it really doesn't try to add too much to the everexpanding genre of clicker games. This bothers me because even on it's roughest form, Infernus seemed more ambitious. I'm not sure how I feel about the mix of genres though. There's not much romance nor abuse. Because of the nature of the clicker, I often ended up clicking so much that I skipped a lot of dialogue. Some sort of warning or pop up around could be welcomed on future iterations if they do happen. All in all, it's a very solid entry, but compared to the Infernus it's promoting, this one is far more bland. Y'all capable of doing something memorable. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) is eager to see more from you in the future (in the case of @jorgegamedev, *way* too eager). See you next time! 🐳 |
| Apr 26 16:24:17 | 14m 30s | 12Slash | ♥ 1 | The real enemies were not the dudes with the swords... 12Slash_2018-04-26_11-16-45.png This is one of my favorite submissions to the jam so far. Very quick paced, to the point, without trying to do so much it can't do any of it right. It's just concentrated undiluted action, and the great foundations for something far bigger should you ever want to retake the concept. The sprite work is alright, but the music is fantastic. Give good ol' mark a pat in the back. As for gameplay, as I said before, having 3 seconds to dash in, attack, and dash out felt wonderful. Like the intense action scene of some big budget film. Levels kinda became a chore after I killed all of the sword people and I ended up hunting tanky enemies that hid behind blocks, but other than that, it was a fantastic piece. If anything, a small pause between levels would have been appreciated. Because of how many slashes they needed, I'd sometimes (almost every time, actually) click so fast I'd end up a level and start the timer of the next turn with no preparation at all, ending my turn surrounded by enemies. Well, all things considered, excellent work there! [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see what else you can make in future jams. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 27 03:40:58 | 11h 16m | Very Realistic Waiter Simulator | ♥ 2 | So, I threw a pizza at a person asking a pizza in the farthest area of the level. As I clicked, someone immediately popped in front. I got super-jumpscared. windows-very-realistic-waiter-simulator_2018-04-26_22-34-56.png Regardless, I had a fun time checking it out. Funny sounds, and the text faces were hilarious to watch. I overall liked the idea of just throwing burgers and pizzas to their faces, and kinda wanted it to become more fast paced faster. Still, it was a great time. If I were to give some feedback, it would be to add a few lives or something. It was a bummer that one of my runs ended so suddenly because of some random spawn in the worst possible location. Still, no biggie. Great to see that you've become a regular. It'll be great to see more from your team on the future. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) are eager to see what you come up with next. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 27 03:54:37 | 13m 39s | Flower Hero | ♥ 1 | I may be bad at this game, but at least I'm having a good rump headbanging to the tunes chrome_2018-04-26_22-47-05.png This has been one of my favorite games this time around so far. Not only does it has cool music, it has difficulty selection, card management, strategy and rhythm combined with cutesy looks. Even after reading the instructions I struggled a few rounds to comprehend what was going on or what I was meant to do, but once it started rolling, it couldn't be stopped. I'm not really sure of what kind of feedback to give to a project like this. Given the time, it's actually fantastic. It'd be great to see this expanded into something more later down. Once again, great work on making it to the jam. Indeed, I wouldn't have expected the "Hero" games to be about flowers, and this blew my mind. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really love to check more projects from you later on. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 27 13:22:57 | 9h 28m | Dirty Pink | ♥ 2 | This is multitasking hell and I love it DirtyPink_2018-04-27_08-16-08.png It's always great to play something with a vaporwave theme, but to see something like it made so perfectly and during a jam? This is some pro work. Great tunes and incredible sprites. The game itself is very good. Glitch free, very polished, and all works as it's intended to do. Mind that I'm really bad at multitasking, so I could never get good high scores. Having to select and time to get the good ice creams while dodging incoming traffic and having to aim the things at incoming cars is extremely intense. Overwhelming, but the good kind of intense. All in all, this is one of the most polished entries of the jam so far. The team did an incredible work. Good job! [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would like to see more from you in the future. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 27 13:39:14 | 16m 17s | Axe and Roses | ♥ 5 | I think I found true love. chrome_2018-04-27_08-28-42.png Played a few times this game with all characters, and I'm impressed that such a basic concept had so much lore behind of it. I walked into this game thinking it'd be just some dating sim slapped with a barbarian theme, but even Darock the rock had so much insightful things to say. While not the most outlandish game, it's certainly one of the funniest I've seen on this jam. Starting with the idea of barbarians having their own Tinder, and then a regular date session with an outlandishly track, I was grinning like a fool most of the time while playing this. Perhaps a bit too easy and text heavy at times, but still, great spritework, music and story direction certainly made this game shine. Excellent work there. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) will look forward to seeing more games like this from you in the future. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 27 23:17:09 | 9h 37m | Space Captain Rodriguez | ♥ 1 | Got overwhelmed by the cuties. LD41_2018-04-27_18-12-29.png I liked this game. It's clear that the team went all-out on it. The graphics are cute and diverse, while the mechanics are tight. Shooting and dating are indeed odd things to combine, so it's glad to see that it happened. Still, I must say, I had a hard time remembering what button fired what thing, specially since it later on became bullet hell. I ended up having better results when I just started mashing buttons. Well, regardless, I insist, I really liked the design behind of this. Dating sims could really do with some variations like this one every now and then. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) are going to love it. Kudos 🐳 |
| Apr 28 21:40:00 | 22h 22m | KEYBOARD WARRIOR | ♥ 0 | While very simplistic, the guns and text effects were so cool. chrome_2018-04-28_16-33-12.png A bit on the easy side, but the mechanics of Keyboard Warrior seem ripe to be further expanded later down the line. It was a bit hard to get used to constantly changing weapons, but the more I played, the more it grew on me. It forced the player to think, react and adapt quickly. Paired with the text effects, the game felt just right on setting and delivery It was still on the easy side though. Like some open sandbox. I never truly felt any urgency, and overall, this played more like an experiment of mechanics, with no real objective other than surviving. You've got quite a lot of feedback already, so odds are that I'd end up repeating something you've already read a few times. All in all, this is an inspiring project. Very fitting with the theme, and extremely solid mechanics that should seriously be considered for a more elaborate project. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see more of this. Cheers! 🐳 |
| Apr 28 21:56:31 | 16m 31s | Rose-Coloured Dungeon Life | ♥ 3 | I upset the Flamingodess in one of my runs. Loved the insult spree. LD-41_2018-04-28_16-47-35.png I really enjoyed the presentation of this game. The spritework is reminiscent of old school PC games, and the portraits were really vivid. Cute when they needed to be, and menacing when it called for it (like the Flamingodess). Game felt really old-school, but the combination of dungeon crawling with visual novel options made it very unpredictable. My concern here was the combat though. It stared not bad at all, but I struggled a lot in the second level because of the cultists attacking from many angles and quickly, while only having melee attacks to defend myself, with very low range. Getting through the fight moments can be very frustrating. Regardless, the interaction parts were the highlight. Very funny and interesting dialogues, including the "Thot" eldritch abomination. Great work out there. Here's hoping to see more of these characters in the future. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to check more games later on. Kudos! 🐳 PD: Heads up. The download version was detected by my anti-virus. You may want to check that out to prevent people from ignoring the game. |
| Apr 29 00:56:42 | 3h 00m | Shootanoid | ♥ 1 | Easily, one of my favorite games of this compo. I'm going to be playing it for a bit longer 'till I actually beat it. chrome_2018-04-28_19-50-32.png This game is proof that a game doesn't need to be very sophisticated or fancy to outstand. It sticks to a core mechanic, does it right, and implements it in a very rewarding fashion. The presentation is extremely simple, but makes sure that nothing is ambiguous or that anything gets lost in a big mess of colors. This allows to easily manage through the bullet hell that later levels become. The lack of music is not exactly a problem either, because the sounds of breaking blocks along with the particles and the screen shaking add a lot of "oomph" to the atmosphere. The gameplay is king though, with a "simple" mechanic of destroying blocks while avoiding being destroyed by your own machinations. I never felt safe in the game, even when I was spamming fire. It feels so good dodging that many balls. I loved this game. It's great what people can come up with so little time and little resources, as long as there's a great plan to pull it through. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see more games like this one. Kudos! 🐳 |
| Apr 29 01:41:28 | 44m 46s | Sniper and Shield | ♥ 1 | After a few deaths, I went for a pseudo-pacifist run. Just one dude had to suffer my wrath. chrome_2018-04-28_20-36-19.png I kinda like the idea of mixing 2 incompatible genres turning into a well-known genre, in some weird synergy. But yeah, thematically speaking, this is a good incompatible mix. A basic platformer, but with a fun twist. It's a bit of resource managing, which could have been cooler with levels with far more enemies, so the player would need to choose just a few enemies to kill. Given the time limitations of the jam, I believe this is as much as what could have been done. If I may suggest you a few things for your page though, you should add some screenshots of the game, and possibly a more meaty description of your game. The first impression is very important to get more people to play it. Anyhow, good job making it into the jam. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see more from you in the future. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 29 02:55:22 | 1h 13m | MotherDucker | ♥ 1 | And this is only the first level? Oh boy. MotherDucker_2018-04-28_21-47-45.png I love puns and ducks, so I immediately fell in love with this game by reading the title. While a bit slippery at times and with ducklings that behaved oddly every now and then, I loved the execution of this game. Just a normal stroll of a mother duck and her children, but hardcore. Great lowpoly and music. And of course, quacking. My only real complaint about this game is that I felt that the game over screen, which I admit I watched so many times I should be ashamed of my poor gameplay skills, was a bit too long. At the very least, it should have been skippable, since I was very eager to go back into the action. Things really ramp up fast, and I love a good challenge. I'm glad that this game provided. Excellent work! I'll let [my team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) know about this game so they can check it out too. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 29 03:06:02 | 10m 40s | Joyful Cute Pals | ♥ 1 | Just look at them. They're so joyful they're oozing strawberry jam! chrome_2018-04-28_22-01-19.png Because I was so distracted, I didn't even check the screenshot. I just read the description and played the game. It looked innocent enough. Then I realized what was happening down, waited a couple of seconds, and cracked up laughing. Bamboozled! Very shocking indeed. It did look very cutesy, even after grabbing the weapon. It's a bit hard to aim and to overall score, but it was indeed a mashup that I should have seen coming a long distance away and yet it hit me. Here I'll be wondering if you'll continue this at some other point. This is some new-generation Happy Tree Friends thing and I love it. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) wish you a great LD voting session. Cheers! 🐳 PD: Thanks for the feedback on our game, and for the bug. We'll be looking onto that. |
| Apr 29 03:36:42 | 30m 40s | Super Slime Slasher Ultra | ♥ 4 | It's so cute I could die. My character did though. That's why I get for being a paparazzi trying to get a cool shot. Super Slime Slasher Ultra_2018-04-28_22-29-11.png This game has a superb production value, with voice acting and what not. Amazing art, solid gameplay, and a very interesting mix of slashing, matching and to a degree, resource managing, trying to see which slimes should die for points and which to just make space. It gets very frantic and I love it. A bit floaty on the controllers though. I felt that sometimes my attacks would connect when they didn't and viceversa. Never a game ender, but it still felt a bit off. And as a tune up thing, it's weird that, despite being very suggested to be played on a controller, it ends up requiring the mouse to maneuver the menu. Just a tiny thing that could be easily addressed later on, I believe. All in all though, this is a very well rounded up entry that has it all. Great work! [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) want to congratulate yours not only for making such a great entry, but for also supporting other fellow developers around. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| Apr 29 14:40:07 | 11h 03m | Date Night | ♥ 2 | Perfect for those that like witty self-awareness. UE4Game-Win64-Shipping_2018-04-29_09-25-55.png So, a friend of mine told me to review this game instead of him because he didn't want to try a horror game. Now that I've gone through it, we're laughing. It's visually stunning and the dialogue is very funny. A bit odd on the mechanics, but it's certainly a thrill, and very memorable. The game is short but fun, and certainly worth checking out. I have one problem though: When on the menus to select the music during the chase scene, I instinctively pressed Esc to close the menu, only to lose all my progress by going back to the main menu (and while we're at it, I started the game and it glitched, having the camera in front of the player like on the walking cutscene. It looked incredible, but clearly it wasn't intended). All in all, excellent work. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) found it very inspiring. Keep up the good work! |
| Apr 29 17:32:46 | 2h 52m | Puttsy | ♥ 1 | I didn't pay attention to the arrow and got stuck in here for a while because of poor cannon placement. Puttsy_2018-04-29_12-21-49.png This puzzle game is an incredible mash up of well known genres. Solid for most of the part and very intuitive (it was my own fault not seeing that the cannon tower had an entry spot. I thought it'd fire a bomb or something to make the ball jump). It looks and plays great, although sometimes, I felt that the ball wouldn't trigger the towers or go as far as expected. I overall had a great experience with this game, although I did have a lot of problems on the first level with the cannon, and that's aside from my oversight. At times, the ball would not trigger the spring trap, or would be hit but not go far enough. There was even one time where the putter trap pushed it out of the stage. It wasn't much of a problem, but resetting the tower placement after every failure - specially those that occurred before I could test if the rest of the towers were going to work - was an annoyance. Still, this is one of the most polished and fun games I've played on the jam. Excellent work! [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) really would like to see more games like these. Keep up the good work! |
| Apr 29 17:50:04 | 17m 18s | Bubblin' Cauldron | ♥ 3 | There's something satisfying about freezing frogs. chrome_2018-04-29_12-42-13.png What a merry game. While a bit odd on trying to guess what each potion will do, the mechanics of searching for ingredients, mixing and using them as power ups or weapons are spot-on. There's plenty of situations where I would just spam them out of desperation to protect the cauldron. Sometimes, all frogs would be set on fire, and other times, well, I'd just lose the cauldron. While the mechanics are solid, going blind into the game and having to survive with the available resources around makes it very hard to plan ahead. While fun, there were some frustrating moments where the cauldron would get overrun and I wouldn't have any available potions to defend it. This happened as soon as the second wave. Just a bit more of speed for the player could have been welcome, to have one or two more potions ready. Regardless, I applaud the game for having such a cheerful tune and setting. It all works well together. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see what other games you can come up with in the future. Keep on jammin' 🐳 |
| Apr 30 02:21:38 | 8h 31m | CONFESSIONAL | ♥ 2 | Seizure incoming in 3, 2, 1... Confessional_2018-04-29_21-07-35.jpg What an unnerving piece, this is. Dreadful from beginning to end, with a great and fitting track along a model worthy of having it's own series of scary films. The whole game plays like the start of one of those Saw films or something, but with an even more helpless victim. It's startingly good. There's not much to it gameplay wise, but the game is more for shows and a short yet impacting experience. While gore for the sake of gore is not my bread and butter, I'm sure that some people will find some weird thrill here. If I could suggest one thing to focus on it would be the sound effects. They're very simple in comparison to the track. Like, stabs and slices sound like muffled hits with a blunt weapon. It kinda takes away a bit of the impact. Good job regardless. There's not many horror games around, so it's great to see one that gets its point across. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) wish you a great judging period. Cheers! 🐳 |
| May 6 16:32:36 | 158h 10m | Cocaine McBain - A Farm Rush Adventure | ♥ 1 | That was a fantastic treat. The art direction really added to the feeling of rush and highness of my playthrough. The gameplay was a bit basic, easy and didn't even penalized me for, later on, just spamming the buttons to not lose anything, but it's still one of my favorite entries in the jam so far. This game has a great ground and direction, so it'd be great if it could be further updated later on. Adding to the idea of the rush, it'd be interesting to be scored based on the timing of pressing A and D, rather than just doing it, as to prevent spamming like I did. More levels, more story, more hazards, there's so much you can add to it. In its current form, it's too simplistic. Extremely polished and impressively original in the farming and cocaine setting, but I've played so many runners that the actual gameplay experience wasn't much of a novelty. Once again, congratulations on making such a vivid game. One of the most inspiring and funny ones I've seen this time. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) are looking forward to seeing what you can come up with in the future! Cheers! 🐳 |
| May 8 17:24:18 | 48h 51m | Shady Cards | ♥ 0 | Just when I was finally getting the grasp, firing 5 shots at a time and having a good time: LD41_2018-05-08_12-14-17.png If it helps for replication, I bet on 2 Js and 2 As. Just as I pressed the Spacebar, my screen went white and the game crashed. Anyhow, back to my comments about the actual game. I liked it a lot, with plenty of solid mechanics and a great setting, but marred with no direction since there are no goals (that I could notice, other than reaching the end of the level, which was as simple as just running and ignoring everything else while firing). While I like the card powering up idea and the fast paced platforming, I can't help but think that, rather than complementing each other, they're canibalizing. While I had fun with climbing up buildings, with a lack of incentive, I ended up not bothering at all later on because I wanted to try to gamble instead. Don't get me wrong. Both mechanics are great on their own, but they would rarely help each other. The platforming, running and firing felt so good on its own. In the future, consider putting objectives, power ups or something in the middle and at the top of buildings, or put buildings that can't be entered from the side so the player is forced to climb rather than run. Finally, for the setting. I love the music and sound effects. And the graphics are fantastic. This is very well crafted. Loved this, but it does feel a bit short on the sides. Here's hoping you can expand on it in the future, since it shows a lot of potential. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would really like to see this continue intermingling platforming and cardplay. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| May 8 17:36:56 | 12m 38s | Soccer Fight | ♥ 1 | Bringing the pain from above, with my mad football skills chrome_2018-05-08_12-30-09.png While simple on the sides, I love how the game is straight up uncluttered action. A fun, interesting mechanics, with a lot of cheering and funny death sounds. I cracked out laughing when my character went GRAHRAGH and was send flying off the screen when they finally got to me. And the falling basketballs? Priceless. I played a few rounds. It felt alright. A bit weird that Control cancels the shot. It could have been right click or something, I dunno. But still, this game felt very good to play. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would like to compliment you for making use of very different themes and somehow sticking them together. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
| May 8 18:16:22 | 39m 26s | Evil Bunny | ♥ 2 | It took me like half an hour, but I enjoyed the grind. chrome_2018-05-08_13-09-58.png So people don't have to be hand-held like I was, **you have to click on the bunnies to interact and recruit them**, and to finish the game, you need to **click on the areas on the glove at the Barracks** when you have enough attack and defense. While the game wasn't intuitive enough, I'm a sucker for grindfests and upgrade simulators. The silly setting went fantastic with the sountrack (and the Field theme is going to be stuck in my head for days). The game is the best kind of ridiculous. While rough on the sides and somewhat click-heavy when trying to get carrots, I still had one of my best times on this LD while playing this entry. Keep up the good work, bud! 🐳 |
| May 8 20:44:02 | 2h 27m | [Web] Stealth Dance! | ♥ 2 | A boss fight? In the Ludum Dare? Fascinating chrome_2018-05-08_15-36-48.png Before anything, I have to ask. Does this game have audio? I played the HTML version and didn't hear a thing, which is weird for a rhythm based game. If not, it's a shame, since it could have been fantastic. Anyhow, the game itself is extremely impressive. Great visuals, and I really dig the idea of making a Stealth game using the flashiest mechanics and concept possible. This is the kind of things that make the LD so interesting. Heck, I'm willing to call it the best combination I've seen so far, since these are the least compatible concepts I could have thought of. It's ludicrous and excellent. The mechanics are a bit weird and hard to get used to, and the character can feel a bit sluggish, but still, this is very fun. There's a lot of expansion that can be done to it, so here's hoping that there's more Stealth Dance in the future, or something of this caliber. Great work again. [My team](twitter.com/whalesandgames) would like to congratulate you again on such a fantastic entry. Keep up the good work! 🐳 |
