LD23 — Tiny World

Planet ZOOB by Pacifist Games 2012-05-13T13:42:00

Really great game, the procedurally generated music really made it for me. I found the fact that you were shooting on an angle a bit frustrating, but I can see why you had to do it that way (wouldn't have been very challenging if you automatically hit everything which was coming towards you!).

Great job!

(My high score was 64, by the way :P)

Chromatic Breeding by artefon 2012-05-07T08:33:00

As mentioned before, very difficult to judge differences in colour. Also, definitely needs some sort of help/tutorial beyond just "steer the evolution of the bacteria towards the target color". Promising though, for sure!

NanoTanks - A tiny programming game for a tiny world by mjb 2012-04-25T06:15:00

Lack of code reference and a poor GUI made it too difficult to get in to unfortunately. Looks like you had lots of ideas in there as far as the language goes, but it's not accessible for the average player.

Congrats on implementing the whole thing in 48 hours though, that's pretty impressive.

World runner by Gunmonkey 2012-05-01T10:02:00

I thought the character jumps too high/far/long, which makes the smaller jumps really difficult. I think it would be better if the gravity was a lot stronger, and he jumped a lot quicker. Also, the boost mechanic didn't seem to actually do anything... ?

Like others have said, it's like a faster version of Canabalt. And that's cool :P

Lililput by Incredible Ape 2012-05-01T09:58:00

Excellent! Interestingly, I found the words much easier to type if I could come up with pronunciations for them. If I could say them in my head, I could type them without thinking about them too much (some of them I could get without even looking at the spelling after I had worked out a pronunciation).

The Collector by blob 2012-04-26T07:06:00

Excellent game, especially for a 48-hour job! Nothing really wrong with the game that I could tell, fantastic job all around

Tiny the Adventurer by onehandclap 2012-05-12T13:54:00

I really enjoyed this game. I like the way the "cheap" traps made the game slow and methodical, and it had a really nice vibe - very Indiana Jones-y. The variation in the traps was appreciated, too (if you were to continue working on this game, I would focus on increasing the variety of traps in the game even further). I didn't think the gameplay was too difficult per se (balancing is a wee bit off though, I felt the third and fourth levels were too easy), but it could definitely do with checkpoints between levels, or a lives system.

I think you did a great job with the aesthetics - I love the way each level has a clear theme, despite the resolution and colour palette limitations. I think some really cheesy chiptune (to match the aesthetics) music and sound effects could make this really great.

All-in-all, well done!

Seeds Of Destruction by MrPhil 2012-05-13T11:10:00

I don't like the fact that I couldn't shoot past the growing plants. Also, it could do with a bit of background music. But other than that, solid game.

tr-3012 by heuermh 2012-04-26T06:42:00

Well that was... interesting :P.

I had very little idea what was going on, all I eventually realised was that you seem to be effectively making loops by setting the robots on paths. I think in order for that to work though, it needs a lot more GUI elements, otherwise the player gets very confused, very quickly.

Very cool, on the whole though. The innovation, nice audio and nice graphics certainly helped

Worlds in Cards by summaky 2012-05-13T11:24:00

Excellent game! I agree with others about the difficulty being too easy for the most part, but level 4 was great. You should really consider putting this on the Google Play store if you decide to work on it further!

Desire by zazery 2012-04-26T08:30:00

147 points for me!

Would be nice if the size of the game board was adjustable, as I didn't really want to play a 64-turn game (but I did anyway :P). Good game otherwise!

Mini-Worlds and Monocles by Zed 2012-04-25T10:53:00

The gameplay was fairly basic I felt, and a little repetitive, but I still finished the game thanks to the brilliant dialogue. It was genuinely funny; I thought the line about the "Convenient Plot Device" was a master stroke!

Puny Planet by Sichuan 2012-05-02T11:42:00

Once I worked out how the physics worked, I really enjoyed it! Totally unrealistic, but fun! Definitely needs a scoring system to keep me interested though. Also, I didn't like the MIDI music - sorry! Just my opinion of course.

With a bit more polish, this could be really good.

Intertubes by Jack 2012-05-07T02:43:00

Good fun.

The only issue I noticed was with key ghosting, so diagonal shooting while moving is almost impossible for most people. Gamepad controls definitely would have helped with this issue, but I understand that that would have added a lot of extra difficulty, not something you want in a time-restricted competition.

subAtomic by MurrayL 2012-05-13T12:47:00

Supremely excellent! I loved the story and humour. I don't have anything to add which hasn't already been said, so I'll leave it at that. Congratulations!

Tiny world survival by Dracir 2012-05-07T03:14:00

I really enjoyed this game! Killed about 1200 enemies on the slope level first time I played it :P.

I didn't think much of the other level though, especially the fact that the player didn't auto-climb over the little obstacles. The rain didn't help either. Also, the shotgun sound drove me crazy after a while :P.

The shotgun and grenade were a little overpowered though, so I almost never used the gun or the laser.

Really nice graphics though! (Although the gun's bullets were hard to see.)

ARACHNID by BuffaloPhil 2012-05-10T00:38:00

I found the movement a bit frustrating (especially the falling mechanic - having no control when falling especially), but the gameplay was pretty unique, so I enjoyed it overall

trapped. by noddy2006 2012-04-25T10:14:00

Cheers for the comments everyone.

Concerning the sound bug, I've no idea what's happening there, I guess Java's sound library just doesn't support some hardware??

Because of the time constraints I mentioned on my blog posts, AI wasn't a priority at all - having a working, polished game was my main target. As a result, yes, it is very easy to beat the enemies - the longer you play it, the more frequently the enemies spawn (but it's not balanced so I actually have no idea how quickly they spawn after playing for a decent length - definitely didn't play test enough!).

Glad people seem to be enjoying certain aspects of the game, even though the gameplay is lacking somewhat!

trapped. by noddy2006 2012-04-25T11:01:00

@Monkey Armada, you need to have Java installed to play this game. Sorry, should have put that in the description!

trapped. by noddy2006 2012-04-25T23:20:00

@TheGamingProject, thanks for letting me know, I can remove that pesky "untested" label now!

trapped. by noddy2006 2012-04-27T10:08:00

@blob, try www.java.com/download.

@Lucas Tiridath, I made it so enemies can't spawn if you're on the spawn point tile - however, I just realized that they can still spawn if you're on the boundary of two tiles (but the game considers you to be on the adjacent tile), so it would have the same effect. Whoops! As for the levels: they were thrown together somewhat haphazardly, and in some cases there are unreachable platforms (such as the pyramid level). Just pretend the player's stuck on the pyramid, and they have to survive the falling enemies. Or something. :P

trapped. by noddy2006 2012-05-02T00:00:00

@kddekadenz, there most definitely is sound - perhaps it wasn't working for you? It seems like the audio isn't working for everyone. Sorry!

The rest of the points are all valid though - thanks for the feedback! (Though I take offense to you saying the textures are ugly ;) ).

trapped. by noddy2006 2012-05-13T16:44:00

@Toast, I would have loved to have worked on this twice as long, but unfortunately, life transpired to keep me from doing so.

LD26 — Minimalism

Spacus by manabreak 2013-05-01T09:47:00

Great job! I love the graphics & aesthetics. Like most people, I found the controls frustrating - my recommendation would be to remove the angular momentum altogether. The music also didn't work for me (Windows 8 x64) :(

Picture Frame by Herku 2013-05-10T02:13:00

Very cool game! I couldn't tell that the levels were randomly generated at all. I'm up to level 38 at the moment, I thought I'd keep going till I reached the end... probably not a good idea now! That does explain though why I occasionally get some super easy puzzles (such as:

. . . .
. * * .
-------
* * . .
. . . .

... which I have 3 turns to solve!)

PLOG by Gungnir 2013-05-05T03:02:00

Very cool game. It was a little bit easy though. It's already been mentioned, but it would be cool if the shapes started rotating in later stages - that would really add a new level of difficulty!

RUNNERIST by BumbleBirds 2013-04-30T09:31:00

The inversion thing was great - I loved how that metaphor continued over to the music. Great fun overall!

Fjoxel by Pixelsalt 2013-05-03T12:36:00

So much fun! With a bit more polish and controller support (and maybe slightly more forgiving gameplay!), I could totally see myself playing this game a lot. Awesome :)

Potato Dungeon by _Rilem 2013-05-10T03:47:00

Super cool, but I noticed a few problems. I found the combat to be pretty fun, but it's quite easy to get hit due to the way the "invincible enemy" thing works after you damage them. Instead of being able to juggle enemies in the air, they would just fall through my sword after I hit them once. The small enemies also took a bit to kill, which really slowed down the pace of the game, which I found detrimental. I also found pushing the boxes around to be a bit frustrating, as the physics didn't always play nice. Do I have to push the boxes with my sword? Wasn't intuitive to me. Finally, why were the boxes rendered at a 45 degree angle? That was weird to me, kind of perspective-destroying.

Despite those issues, however, I thought it was a really fun game. With a bit of tweaking and polish, you could definitely turn it into a great little game.

Vs. by KJScott 2013-04-30T11:19:00

Cool game! I smiled when the objects started to take shape - clever. I think the X=Y notation was a bit vague though. Maybe something like (square) > (circle)? Seems more intuitive to have what you need to use on the left and what you want to beat on the right, given that that's where the shapes originate.

Minimalism : Find the red Cube by Martin_Monosys 2013-05-11T03:13:00

Interesting game! You know what would be cool? If there were infrequently flashing lights all over the level which illuminated the dark paths. Infrequent and out-of-sync, so you have to rely on memory to make it through. Or maybe audio cues to give you a hint on when you're about to fall off. At the moment it's a bit too trial-and-error-y - nice to see something different though!

Bonk by tove 2013-05-11T04:40:00

Great game! Soooo hard though, haha. I agree with other comments about using the mouse for analog control. Maybe slowing the ball down would've helped a lot too. Also, it would have been cool if the volume of the left channel indicated the distance of the ball from the paddle.

The Painter's Cat by Arcana 2013-05-02T07:32:00

Difficult controls, but the audio was beautiful. Great stuff!

I Want To See Space by PizzaPranks 2013-05-11T05:01:00

I genuinely laughed at some of the dialogue - great stuff!

This is not a game. by AaronYip 2013-04-30T11:10:00

Wow.

Morning by noddy2006 2013-04-30T10:42:00

Thanks for the comments everyone! :D

@Aceria: that's a very good point about the text boxes. I'll keep that in mind when I get back to working on it!

@manabreak: I'm sorry I hurt you so bad, but I'm stoked that you were immersed in it! I was planning on adding in very minimalistic background music, but I'll have to keep in mind that the quiet adds to the drama.

@juaxix: I didn't trust my skills modelling humans... in fact, this may or may not be the reason the game is in first-person ;).

I am definitely hoping to work on this game further - the last 72+ hours have left me a little burnt out, so I'll be taking a few days off first, but after that I'm planning on getting back into it! I had an idea for the core concept of the game right when I started development, but unfortunately I didn't get time to even begin to implement it. I don't want to give too much away (I want it to be a bit of a surprise), but I'm hoping it'll make the game a bit special :)

Morning by noddy2006 2013-05-01T04:19:00

PSA: there was a bug with the Mac version which prevented it from launching. It should be fixed now :)

Morning by noddy2006 2013-05-01T09:27:00

@manabreak: Cool! Thanks for the link, that looks pretty sweet. I'll see if I can work it in somehow :).

I wasn't planning on keeping a journal or anything, but I could post updates to my blog (samuelhindmarsh.wordpress.com) from time to time if enough people were interested! Regardless of whether I end up keeping a journal, I'll upload the latest build of the game each day I work on it to GitHub so you can always play the latest version if you are so inclined :P.

LD27 — 10 Seconds

10 seconds-life by thephantom 2013-08-31T01:35:00

The game was fairly good, but a little bit boring. There's potential for some interesting themes in there (e.g. how the pace of life changes as you age, how different obstacles appear etc.).

I kept playing because I wanted to hear the song some more though, I loved it! Any chance of an mp3?

10 Second Hero by Diogo Muller 2013-09-08T03:31:00

Very cool, I like it! But the game only lasting 10 seconds is a bit lame. Would be more fun if the levels were a bit longer, and you had 10 seconds to complete each one. I can understand why you made that decision though, it does give the game a bit of a hectic quality and it is a more interesting use of the theme.

Big City Goat Adventure by Sebby 2013-09-09T07:52:00

I enjoyed your game! The puzzles started off super easy, but the staff mechanic certainly "switched" things up a bit (pun totally intended). I think I managed to cheat on the last puzzle, though (just south of the room with the last pickup)! Good stuff regardless!

Pistols at Dawn by aherbez 2013-09-02T01:29:00

Hilarious! Mouse controls are a bit weird, but totally fits the style of humour.

Robots Save the Day by udo 2013-08-28T08:57:00

Excellent game! I loved it. Puzzle 4 confused me though, as I didn't realize you didn't have to face the evidence to kill it.

RetroType by Blinked 2013-09-04T08:43:00

Score of 627, WPM of 62 for me. The game was made very difficult by the fact that I couldn't press the spacebar in between words - in fact, it actually caused my forearm to ache halfway through. Also, if I were you I wouldn't have put in words which differ between localizations - it took a lot of effort for me to write "colorful" when I'm used to writing "colourful"!

Stoppage Time by noddy2006 2013-08-28T21:13:00

@DuduSAr: thanks for the feedback. I regretted after I submitted not having a "delete last action" button, and also a button to clear all players' instructions - I think the current method of clearing all of a single player's instructions is a bit frustrating. And yeah, the collision detection is pretty dodgy - I went for features over polish for this game!

Stoppage Time by noddy2006 2013-09-02T23:59:00

Thanks for the feedback everyone! All of it is very much appreciated. Definitely considering a post-comp version now!

@klianc09: I'm glad you noticed how straightforward it is to create your own scenarios - thanks for reminding me to put that in the description too :P.
