LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Dungeon Break by radow 2020-10-09T03:30:21Z

This is one of the more fun entries that I played so far! The main game mechanic of having limited moves isn't too innovative, but what I found to be really enjoyable is the level design and the gimmicks introduced. I think it was really clever to have a "forced" restart mechanic where you can use one try to make progress, go on another route based on what you did before and build it from there. That makes this game really enjoyable to find the solution. Nicely done!

GLITCH LOOP by ZakAmana 2020-10-09T03:20:31Z

I honestly have no words; this is FANTASTIC! I cannot even begin to fathom how much effort went into making this! Love the execution, graphics, and music! I had a little hard time playing some of the levels, I wasn't sure if the controls were not suppose to be completely 1-1? As in if I move right, the character wouldn't always move to that given spot? Not sure if that was the main gimmick of the game, but neverless, really well done.

Traveling the Wild West by Cwazywierdo 2020-10-09T03:37:24Z

This is really charming! Although I hate to say it, but I did have a little hard time even trying to start the game when I first launched the game. After that, I was able to consistently grab ricks, but never the bulls? As such, I unfortunately didn't get too far into the game, but that could just be my bad gaming skills ahah! Granted, I was playing the web browser version, so idk if that has to do with the control issues I was running into.

Nevertheless, I liked your idea, it was pretty unique from what I've seen. Good work!

HERO BURGER by mhm32167 2020-10-08T04:31:10Z

This game is nice! I really liked how solid the controls are as well as the presentation, very clean! Props to making your own music and sound effects, although the noise the burger makes freaked me out a little bit ahaha! Overall though, I can def see some similarities with yours and my game .

One thing that I will say is that there are some food friends and condiments that spawn ontop of knives, to the point where it can be a little cheap to start pushing food only to take some damage. Also, I'm not sure if the knives spawn randomely on the belt? It seems to only be in one particular row when I played.

Nevertheless, solid game! I can def see this being very addicting to get a high score!

GHOST FROM JAIL by Gilad Bar Ilan 2020-10-08T04:38:18Z

Wow! This is really impresive to make in a weekend! From a technical standpoint I am really impressed you got in a high score feature as well as a tutorial that only played once. That was a nice QOL addition. I also liked the music as well, pretty catchy, especially the main menu.

The game itself is a little challenging, I thought you could go into the doors at the top or if you were suppose to proceed to different areas. It might just be me being bad with computer controls lol, but I can't seem to get the teleport done right, do you use it and move? I think one of the things that would be nice to have is the ability to shoot in more than one direction, but then again, that's why you gave the teleport ability.

Overall, solid game, impressive work!

Hunger Pains by Kaabiikaze 2020-10-05T04:51:00Z

Made it just in time before I have to head out to work!

Anyway, this is my very first game jam, so I appreciate any and all respective feedback. I am a programmer first, so my art is a little rough on the edges.

Otherwise I hope everyone enjoys this game! It was fun making this over this weekend.

Hunger Pains by Kaabiikaze 2020-10-06T03:08:41Z

@gilad-bar-ilan Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed your experience playing my game!

@zakamana Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate that you liked my theme of the game. Ya, that's a valid point, so there was suppose to be another challenge type but due to time constraints, I was unable to get it implemented into the game. So to compensate, I tried to make a psudo difficulty maker, but as you saw, it is a little repetitive. Funny enough, I was even thinking of doing a random generated level, but that unfortunately didn't come into fruition.

However, it is something that I do want to revisit when I have time later down the road! Thanks again for your helpful feedback!

Hunger Pains by Kaabiikaze 2020-10-06T04:03:18Z

@adil Ahaha thanks for the feedback! There was more going to be in the game originally, but due to time, I had to cut out some content. Regardless though, I appreciate that your enjoyed your experience!

@radow Thank you! :) Oh my god yes I remember those days fondly, going onto Newgrounds and just spending time after work/school just playing free flash games. Anyway, thanks for the valid point, that was one thing that I noticed after hearing some friends playtesting it, which is something that may have been on my end. But I am glad to hear that it's all consistent so far!

@radgegames Thanks for playing the game! Yes that is something that I will definitely put on my list of things to fix in my revisit of this game, since it was a slight oversight on my end. Regardless though, I love your feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the music too! Been in the mood for chiptunes as of lately. :)

Hunger Pains by Kaabiikaze 2020-10-06T04:33:31Z

@funemaker I'm glad you enjoyed it! :) Thanks for the awesome feedback!

Hunger Pains by Kaabiikaze 2020-10-07T03:37:51Z

@cwazywierdo Thanks for the kind words on my game! I'm really happy to hear how this game was a nice spin on the theme! :)

@trexxak Aw thanks for saying that ahaha that really means a lot to hear! Trust me though, there was a LOT more that I wanted to do, but time constraints are the bane of everyone's existence. Regardless, I'm happy that you're happy! :) Trust me, after this, I'll make it an effort to make it out to these events! This was a load of fun!

Hunger Pains by Kaabiikaze 2020-10-08T03:58:46Z

@sophiablabla Thanks for the kind words! Ahaha really now? I'll have to try out your game when I get the chance! :) Looking forward to seeing it!

Time Saver by Daniikk1012 2020-10-06T03:52:27Z

This is a really neat concept! I like the idea of the game being about limited movement. Although, I'm a little lost on how you get more time. When I kill one enemy, it doesn't seem to add more time to my time bar, so I can barely get past the first person without getting a game over. Is this a bug with the game or am I missing something? Nevertheless, I immediately got hooked as soon as I read your game description, music and graphics!

If it helps, I'm playing on my Mac.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

MineWell by superpokeunicorn 2021-04-28T05:51:44Z

This is a lot of fun! Really impressed with how solid the game loop is once you get going!

I personally like how you teach the player the controls and mechanics of the character through the dirt, that's pretty clever.

Falling Into Dreams by sorlok 2021-05-05T04:39:17Z

I like the sound direction on this game, although not sure if some of the hazards are suppose to be really LOUD haha! I can see this being a really neat phone game as well (which you did also port to as well!)

Reel Deep by frenchie 2021-04-27T05:05:42Z

I LOVE THIS GAME! Seriously, I really like the concept! Would make fora good mobile game!

So where to begin, the art is super charming! It reminds me of a game called Part Time UFO, especially the UI. The fish are really adorable, slthough I never seen so many clownfish that want to grab a hook haha!

I think what really sold me on this is the music. Mad props to that; it was really well executed, especially when you snagged all of the items in one round and about to reel up. Which makes me really like how difficult you can make the game (either go deep and get lots of fish or stay up high and only get a little bit)

Some feedback, the UI on the browser is a little shrunken on my screen (not sure if it's because of my monitor or playing it on browser is different. Also, the pricing of some of the upgrades after level 1 shoot WAY up so you do have to grind a bit to get those better upgrades.

Overall, amazing job!

Reel Deep by frenchie 2021-04-28T05:28:05Z

@frenchie Ah I think that might be the reason; my monitor that I was playing has a rather weird resolution. I think I scaled it up a bit in the OS, which might affect how some things are displaying in the browser. Nevertheless, it is a really minor detail; most likely an edge case if anything else.

TREE by Marcionix 2021-04-27T05:10:50Z

This was a good time! I was a little confused how it worked at first, but once you get used to that, it can get pretty interesting how to manage your resources. I like the art style of the game too!

The Legend of Water by darkfrost 2021-04-29T06:04:40Z

This gave me Etriyan Odyssey/ Mystery Dungeon vibes. :stuck_out_tongue:

On a more serious note, this is really nice! The music is pretty soothing even though you are being surrounded by deadly octopi. The weapon system is neat, although I don't really know the difference between the green gem and the rock shots? Is the rock stronger?

I ended up finding myself just spamming shots since there isn't any ammmo count, but the game itself is still pretty hard. I died as soon as I touched the stairs leading to the last floor haha.

Im impressed with the maps, did you design them yourself? I thought the maps were auto genrated at first, but this was a lot of work to make for 5 levels haha. Good job!

My only other thought is that sometimes the bounce shots go "out of bounds" meaning they travel up towards the camera sometimes, but it didn't affect the gameplay as a whole.

Oceanographer Cat by TheCrittersCove 2021-04-30T05:07:35Z

As some people here might have mentioned already, hats off to the menu haha! I was a little confused how to start the game until I realized you have to take a picture of the fish to start! Really nice way to introduce the mechanic.

I do like how when you take a picture of an animal/plant, you "identified" all of those animals in the level. That was a nice touch so that it made it easier to find which animals you haven't taken a picture of. I do think the visuals are a little "flat" but as a programmer, I can't judge, but it is really charming! The giant squid almost got me.

Good job! It's almost as if Pokemon Snap was underwater. But you're a cat. That's a mermaid.

Go deep by gogu 2021-04-28T05:44:30Z

I like the ghost figures in here :ghost:

But in all seriousness, I like the idea, definitely more of a puzzle than a platformer. There are some instances where you fall like a rock in order to land on a terrain that you need to focus while falling, so the timing can get a little strict.

One more thing is that the gimmick makes it a little hard to know which platforms are solid and which ones are no longer solid. This is only a problem in the last level since you have a lot of layers going on, making it a little tricky.

Regardless, I like it! I'm curious to see what other levels you'd make with this gimmick!

Stump's Great Adventure by Pandaman02 2021-04-27T04:43:33Z

Interesting concept for a game! The blocks forming a path for you to move on reminds me of other games such as Mario Galaxy and Bastion (Supergiant games). I was a little confused on how to proceed at first, since these blocks move at almost random(?) intervals? Not sure if the block colors are suppose to indicate anything either, so I just ended up walking forward for the most part and it seemed to work?

My only gripe is that monsters sometimes just pop out of nowhere and you lose without realizing they are there. I'm not sure if there's an in game clue on where they appear, but I do appreciate the danger radius around them!

Overall, I like the idea! Nice job with the art on the main character!

Dig Deeper by adam077x 2021-04-30T05:36:53Z

This is really cool, I like how the game is all about micro managing your fuel while trying to get all of the needed resources. The sound is a little grating, but I did like the visual upgrades!

A Dank Room by ssh.randy 2021-04-27T04:34:10Z

I like the idea and can definitely see the heavy inspiration with `A Dark Room`. I really like the cave splunking part the most, although I did find a rather interesting exploit (not sure if intentional?).

If you go to a new floor that has torches near the entrance, you can grab those torches, immediately go back down the floor andd go back up to pick up those same exact torches on that level. By doing this, I was able to get a pretty good sight on the entire cave, sort of making the exploration a little disappointing.

Neertheless, I like what you guys did with this! Cool idea, glad that you had fun making this!

Don't Fall asleep by MustachedNinja 2021-05-05T04:06:06Z

I like the visuals, but the controls were really hard to adjust on my end. I ended up not making it to the end of the stairs on my first try. Also, the camera snapping in some scenes is a little suddden, especially with the controls.

Overall, nice attempt!

Deeper and deeper by Adam Jewell 2021-04-30T04:59:13Z

For a game that was made in 7 hours, I think you did a good job! I was a little jarred about how when you stop moving you default to facing forward, which includes attacking enemies, so it was a little confusing at first. I also noticed some little nuances with the entrances (I tried to enter the cave from behind and it still worked along with the stairs).

The cave itself has a cool look ,it reminds me of Paper Mario in how the characters are all 2D, but the environments are more or less 3D. I think with a bit of polish, it can be really solid, but again, kudos on the attempt!

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-04-27T05:15:35Z

@ripter Thanks for the feedback! Good question, so those other backdrops would show up the more points you scored in your current session. So they are based on your current score, not how far you dropped.

Although I can understand seeing it like that!

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-04-28T05:17:39Z

@pijamar Thank you! I am really happy that you appreciated the flow of the game! Ahaha, I really wanted to sell that nice SMASH noise when you go through the gold blocks, especially all in a row. There is no end to the game, it will loop back once you reach the "final" area, so essentially it is just a high score game!

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-04-28T05:20:04Z

@hungryroy Ahaha yup that is the challenge of the game, do you keep diving down to score big or take your time and weeave between blocks? There was a feature that I wanted to implement, which was a combo system where the longer you dive and break blocks, you get more points. Unfortunately, that was cut a bit early in development, but I'd love to revisit it!

Ah, that is a good catch! I think that was a bit unintentional for that to happen. Good find! I can always put out a patch to fix that up/

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-04-28T05:25:17Z

@chromaful Thank you! I'm really happy you liked the music! It was my first attempt in making game jam music, so I was a bit afraid it would get to you if you listen to it for a while haha, but I guess that is not the case! Yup exactly! It's as I mentioned to Hungryroy earlier, all a balancing act to make sure you don't play it too safe.

Aw man, I'm sorry about that, I was a little "naive" with the spawning mechanics, since I feel it is a little too random at times. Although what you mentioned about the placement of gold blocks near gray ones is intriguing, I tried to make sure that wouldn't happen. Apologies on those frustrations on that! That will be something I can look into when I revisit this game post jam!

Nevertheless, thank you for the critiques and comments! I really appreciate these type of feedback, since I always want to strive to better my own skills and knowledge. Appreciate you! :grinning:

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-04-29T05:45:03Z

@ubershmekel Thanks for the feedback! Part of the challenge is to make sure you dive bomb into the gold ores while taking care to not go so fast you crash into anything else. But I do like the idea of having a middle ground speed! I'll have to look into that when I revisit this game. Also sorry not sorry for your ears

@neowise06 Thanks for playing the game!

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-04-30T04:50:41Z

@darkfrost Aw geez, thanks so much for the kind words! Actually, you bring up a really good point that I had on the back of my mind about the "spamming" the dive bomb and not dive bomb. Part of me wants to make it even harder than it is  , so having either a delay after dive bombing would be a nice touch.

Yay! I'm glad someone else noticed that! I was really happy with how that turned out, since it was on a whim that I wanted to do that. Especially since I wanted to get better at animations.

Ahaha sorry for your ears, but hey you did have fun though...

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-05-01T00:22:53Z

@kiptok Thanks for the feedback! I'm happy you really enjoyed the art style and the polish in those animations!

@jakobthequizguy Nice job on getting to the second BG change! That's a good point you mention on that, I appreciate that feedback, my own art skills got the best of me there haha. Nevertheless, glad you enjoyed it, I'll be sure to keep that in mind on my second revisit!

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-05-02T04:00:06Z

@lex Thank you for the compliments! I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

@thecritterscove Hey I remember you, you're the one that made the really charming cat mermaid photographer game! Thanks for trying out my entry! I wanted to get more time to do some more polishing with the backgrounds, but unfortunately, that got to the best of me. Although, now that you mentioned that, I do have an idea on how I can get that to work, so back to the drawing board! Thanks for that feedback on the controls as well, I should have realized that is what the character IS doing ahaha :face_palm: . Hm that is an interesting bug you found, thanks for letting me know! Hitboxes are fun.

@mhorth Thanks for the feedback! Yup, you only get points for going through the gold blocks, although I was thinking of having other ways of making points (drilling consecutively i.e.). Thanks for the feedback though, since the text is a bit misleading on my end (apologies for that!)

Sky Plummet by Kaabiikaze 2021-05-11T03:55:49Z

@sorlok Thanks for the kind words and feedback! I have not heard of that game before, but after hearing it, now I have to check it out too haha!

Where's my dynoMITE? [LD48] by miej 2021-04-29T05:38:44Z

I really like the sound effects, they gave me a good chuckle haha!

I did get a bit stuck near the one part where you are suppose to chuck dynamite at some rocks so you can lower the giant rocks for the helicopter to move down. But it was mostly me working out the controls; overall solid game!

Quiet In The Deep by rjmarzec 2021-05-05T04:32:21Z

I spent about 15 mins playing this game, really solid! There's a few nuances in this game that make it a little harder than it seems (the detection radius seems to be pretty big and hiding doesn't make you invincible against the fish). Some of the levels are also pretty hard later on like the level where the screen gets really dark is moody, but also a little annoying to find all of the chests. I got stuck on the last level trying to swim my way through the tight corridor, but I wasn't aware that the spikes can actually kill you. Sometimes the fish get stuck in a weird spinning loop on occasion.

Besides that, I really like this entry!

Low Notes by mhorth 2021-04-30T05:17:45Z

I like this entry a lot! There's a lot of potential in here to do some cool things with this. Besides what you prob heard, which I will also agree on as well (maybe show how close the notes are to the timing like color change) The pitch change I thought was nice, but I do agree, maybe tone it down a bit? If anything, one thing that could be neat is to have thee HP bar be represented by like something more visual, like static level on the screen?

Either way props! I can't believe even in a jam, there's always a undertale reference.

Lonely Sound by Ethanthopkins 2021-04-27T04:56:46Z

Wow. I was NOT expecting to play a story driven game in this jam!

Where to start, I really like the art direction, it's charming! Reminds me of minecraft avatars haha. There's also some moments that gave me a good chuckle, like how in the beginning if you take too long to get the supplies, you get yelled at. I was not expecting that haha!

I liked the pacing on the game, considering the length and time you took to make this! I did get apooked out when the screen said RUN, caught me off guard.

As for some feedback, the movement is a little sluggish. For a story game that is fine, but the map you are in is a little barren. Although, I will say that the interactivity of the objects really help patch that up. Also, I really like the dialogue bubble you made, it's really good! The color and the format is a little weird at times, but besides that I like the take on it.

Overall, good job on this! Definetly one that I will remember.

The Camera Is Watching by Pink Spaceman 2021-04-29T05:51:39Z

This is a cool idea, but I'm not sure if it is just me, or I keep on soft locking the game? Like there's a session where I had the guard not move at all once the first door closed, and since you can't reopen doors or camera, I had to restart the game manually.

Capture.PNG

Other than that, I like where you are going with this! Nice job!

Do not Disturb! by ossuboi 2021-04-28T05:38:12Z

This game gets a 10 in my book only because you yeet everything out.

In all seriousness, this is really fun! It was kind of likea puzzle at first to see where everything is and once you know where all of the noisemakers are, you can then optimize your path.

Really like the attention to detail in here, good job!
