Link doesn't work.

rhoff95 2021-04-26 15:51

Link does not work, make sure your game is public/published/all that on itch.

ssh-randy 2021-04-26 21:52

sorry, link fixed! you should see it now, although the game is still WIP

ssh-randy 2021-04-26 22:57

Just so people know, there's a bug with the map view! You have to click on the map in order to get your movements to register. we'll fix it asap!

roberto-romao 2021-04-27 04:20

Played for a while, really liked the dark room vibes here :)

Good job!

teenythanos 2021-04-27 04:24

This is SO cool, really unique. Love the ASCII approach but the surprise crab sold me. SUPER cool, guys! Could have certainly benefitted from a soundtrack but I also appreciate the idea not to.

kaabiikaze 2021-04-27 04:34

I like the idea and can definitely see the heavy inspiration with `A Dark Room`. I really like the cave splunking part the most, although I did find a rather interesting exploit (not sure if intentional?).

If you go to a new floor that has torches near the entrance, you can grab those torches, immediately go back down the floor andd go back up to pick up those same exact torches on that level. By doing this, I was able to get a pretty good sight on the entire cave, sort of making the exploration a little disappointing.

Neertheless, I like what you guys did with this! Cool idea, glad that you had fun making this!

ssh-randy 2021-04-27 04:43

hah good find on the exploit. we can release a patched version in a bit :) @kaabiikaze

ssh-randy 2021-04-27 04:43

@teenythanos thanks a bunch! time constraints was what ultimately led to the lack of sound track, in the future we'd love to make one. thanks for the feedback!

fireslash 2021-04-27 04:51

It's not clear to me how to get to the room on the left... I always end up back outside of the cave.

ssh-randy 2021-04-27 05:06

woops that's a bug @fireslash ! we did not properly account for that  sorry! we'll work on fixing it

krummja 2021-04-27 16:05

As a fellow roguelike developer - I love this so much! Is this a TCOD project? Or I guess since it's React, it's ROTjs?

ssh-randy 2021-04-27 16:55

@krummja we used react without any other frameworks! just bare react :)

universeflow 2021-04-27 19:14

Seems very interesting! Especially with the game being made in React! However, I cannot seem to see the cave, only buttons to stoke flames, gather wood, check traps, etc, any ideas?

alpacalypse 2021-04-27 19:42

Making a game in React is such an interesting idea, good job

generic-games 2021-04-27 20:26

A dark room! I'm impressed with how the game unfolds, it's fun to play and you guys have done a great job building on the theme. The wavering brightness of the tiles of the map under the torch was a nice touch.

(I also found the same torch exploit as @Kaabiikaze, haha - good to hear that's been spotted!)

craig-cordeiro 2021-04-27 20:56

Truly amazing!

@universeflow you have to make some torches before you can venture forth

ssh-randy 2021-04-28 16:18

Glad y'all loved the game so far! we've been a bit busy at work, so we haven't had time to fix the torch exploit :( but then again, you can theoretically craft as many torches as you want

in future iterations we hope to add a real combat system too :)

dom-de-re 2021-04-30 02:09

This was a great game! It reminded me of those old desktop games, like Castle of the winds!

frozenfire92 2021-04-30 02:23

Great entry! I really like the mix of the "idle" dark room with a rogue like dungeon. Keep up the good work

kristof 2021-04-30 05:40

Good work doing the whole game in react! At first I thought the game was broken for me, as I only had buttons to click and seeing the screenshot on your entry page before. Maybe you could show a drawing of an adventurer sitting in front of a cave in the background to indicate that it is an intro sequence? But I am glad I figured out what to do to get into the dungeon part of the game. Further down, it became quite tricky to dance around the crabs :) Cool light and shadow effects!

caloudon 2021-04-30 08:30

Very good game. I enjoyed playing what you made here and really like the dark room part . Thanks for making this.

t-c 2021-04-30 14:01

Very good idea and concept. I wished there was something I could do about the crabs camping hallways, too often I found myself just trapped with no way to juke. But I really liked the style, the idea, the vision implementation, and the game overall!

tigerj 2021-04-30 22:01

Fascinating combination of crafting and rogue. I enjoyed the concept and the uniqueness of your build choice (react)

lysenti 2021-04-30 22:12

Wow that a really good work ! Really creative. It was brave to submit a Roguelike for LD, gladly I love it. :)

jadonagames 2021-04-30 22:14

I was surprised to play a little rogue like game in ascii made with React :)

feraligatr 2021-04-30 22:26

A nice minimalistic rogue like game. The font was too small for me, had to zoom in to ~200%, a scaling UI would be neat (was playing on 2560x1440 Monitor).

ssh-randy 2021-05-01 02:29

@feraligatr thanks for the feedback! it's been a while since we worked with react, but we'd love to make our UI more reactive in the future to deal with different browser sizes!

duo-afgebeld 2021-05-07 21:00

Great to see a roguelike on LD! Lighting effect is cool. The crafting part at the beginning seems a little pointless as there is no real challenge except figuring out the rules. Is there a way to attack the crabs? I just avoided them.

gamebuilder 2021-05-13 18:53

It's an interesting combination of two genres. I wish there were more variety in the dungeon — all I could find were torches and vicious crabs. Perhaps I didn't dive deep enough. Even so, I think this game has potential. I especially like the graphics and the color scheme.
