LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Disintegrate by zenmumbler 2017-12-09T01:58:19Z

This is fantastic! I loved the mood and atmosphere! The sound and level design was well done also. I really enjoyed the effects of the orbs. Coupled with the atmosphere, runes, and sound design, it had a first-person Eternal Darkness feel to it. I was an interesting take on the theme as well.

The second puzzle took a while to work out, but I'm glad you had included in the description that there were three clues in the level, because I stopped looking after I found the two "keypads" and corresponding clues. This is one of the first LD40 games I have played that had a story too it. It was intriguing and I would love to see this game expanded upon. I noticed that you opted out of the graphics category, but I think you did well with the textures and look of the complex, but you could do some really cool things with the orbs. I enjoyed the runes as well!

Peregrine by ARuculaDoMal 2017-12-06T01:54:18Z

I made it out with 680 on my second try! I really enjoyed the variable difficulty mechanic of being able to drop the loot and that your abilities lessen as your weight increased. This fit the theme perfectly. I also enjoyed how interactive the environment was and the various threats at different heights. The time that I succeeded in getting away, I stayed off the ground much more than the first attempt. The art style works well together and is cohesive throughout the scene. Your team did a great job of incorporating a variety of elements in a short time.

My only complaint was that it seemed like you could get stuck, losing money repeatedly from the same officer. Maybe include a mechanic that pushes you away a short distance to avoid multiple attacks.

Keep up the great work! I'm sure that you will all do great things.

Total Pollination by homeworld 2017-12-07T22:42:45Z

I love everything about this! I'm surpised that you don't have more ratings so far! I love the visual style and the splash screen image. That is one thing I would have liked to have made for our game but didn't have time. The main thing I thought was missing was the sound and music. I understand the time crunch though, as we only had time to include one song and no sound.

It took me about three minutes and then glancing at the comments to realize the mouse button indicators were swapped and I thought the connect mechanic just wasn't working. There also doesn't seem to be a way to pause, restart, or quit the game. The first time I played through, I thought the difficulty was way too high, but then I realized how much faster it is to get spice when you have the depot close to the mine and not having them walk from the spice areas close to the shuttle.

Overall, fantastic job! I would love to see this game fleshed out and have a full release after LD! Keep up the great work!

Money Laundering Simulator by candlesan 2017-12-09T02:56:32Z

This is one of my favorite LD games so far! Good idea including the inspirations for this game. I can definitely see some of the references in this. I couldn't believe how high some of the leaderboard scores were! My highest was mid $200,000's. The gameplay is very addictive, if a little difficult. I think you really have something here.

My only complaint is that I've noticed a few times that clicking on a second task before you finish getting all of the money for the first task causes you not to get the moeny for the second one. The graphics and UI design were great and the voice acting and sound effect were a terrific addition. It also fits the theme very well.

I would love to see this expanded into a full release. Great job!

JobOS by NicMagnier 2017-12-07T23:36:47Z

I started getting a cramp in my forearm from typing so fast! I love the simple UI design and the 56k modem was a nice touch! The dialogue was hilarious and I applaud the amount of effort that must have gone into writing the text and code. I think you fit the theme perfectly and took an innovative approach.

It did get to a point where you stopped reading the text to just get through the work. It was very frantic and a litle stressful to have so many jobs at once! I would love to see this expanded and what you can do with the money to purchase upgrades or equipment.

WeedControl by Marc Grabow 2017-12-06T00:50:30Z

Hey Marc, great job on the jam, especially for a solo venture! The game was fun and kept my interest with the time management and progression of resources from growing and selling crops. I enjoyed the music and simple art style for the game and it fit the theme very well. The UI was a little difficult at times, as it would often reopen as you walked away from the chest. Perhaps allowing you to carry a few items at a time would alleviate some of the burden on pop menus as well.

The only real bug I noticed was that it will let you plant in same tile multiple times, essentially just throwing away seeds. I also had the same issue from the previous comment that I got a few plants stuck the first time I played it, saying that they needed to be raked after I had planted and couldn't get them to grow. After starting over, I had no issues.

Great work and I hope to see you in a future LD! I would love to see what you do with it if you continue development.

Tiny Guardian by Nelios 2017-12-07T23:02:40Z

Great job on here! I loved the art style and the frantic gameplay. The theme is cohesive and fits the challenge well. The presentation and look of the game is A+. I would love to have had some music and shoot enemies along with, but I know how hard it is to get to audio when so many other things are more pressing.

My only real complaint is that I would have liked to have been able to use the mouse to fire or at least switch elements. It was sometimes difficult to move while switching. I'm glad that the controls were posted on the page, as I didn't figure out how to switch elements the first playthrough. It was also sometimes difficult to differeniate between player bullets and enemy bullets.

Keep up the great work! I would love to see this released after the jam.

OverHeist by pell707 2017-12-07T03:37:17Z

Great job with the design here! I love the theme of the game and how well integrated it is. I played the practice, the 1st level and made a few attempts at level 2. I thought juggling multiple characters was an interesting concept for a puzzle game. I'm not sure how many levels there are, but maybe consider adjusting the order of levels if 2 is in fact the hardest. It seems that is about as far as most of us got. :p

The only other design feedback I would give is maybe include an option to zoom in and out. Having to manage scrolling the camera while controlling multiple characters only added to the difficulty (unless this was intentional of course). The view of the scene in hard mode is probably a better fit to alleviate this challenge. Although I didn't actually attempt hard mode, it is nice that you included difficulty options. I enjoyed visual design, music, and the fresh take on the puzzle genre.

I hope to see more from you in the future!

Space Defender by Timco 2017-12-07T23:55:16Z

Very enjoyable, fast paced gameplay. I ended up around 90, but I had to open the door for my girlfriend and took a few hits since I didn't notice the big pause button. :p

I appreciated the sound effects and music, especially with how few games had time to implement them. The theme fit the jam perfectly and the visual style was very well executed. I would have like to see some type of powerups or special abilities, maybe a short shield that pops up around the planet or something that clears the stage of meteors. Keep up the great work!

Shipping lanes by Darylsteak 2017-12-09T02:19:32Z

I'm a big fan of this style of simulation games. The expanded zone of pirate attention in relation to cargo was an interesting take on the theme and the gameplay was fun and engaging. The sound effects were a nice touch, but music would have added a lot to it.

I think having contact with the land resulting in an instant loss is a bit much. If you want a consequence for nearing the land masses, perhaps consider having a few hits before your ship sinks, or lossing some days while you make repairs. I also had an issue with one of the docks not allowing me to buy or sell.

I would love to see this expanded and the inclusion of new ships and upgrades, various types of cargo, and simulated ship combat. Keep up the great work!

@kerneltt Great job!

Super Wall Paint! by beepyeah 2017-12-07T03:47:32Z

I like the 8-bit sound design and the nostalgic feel of the intro. This fits the theme so well with such a simple design and concept! Great idea.

The only thing that I would like to see is maybe make it so that you can speed up the movement of the brushes so that you can get through the single brush level quicker. It doesn't have much difficulty until the second brush, so maybe shorting the time that the player might be less engaged after the first attempt.

I made it to level 16. I hope to see more from you in the future!

Don't Grow Ego by Sherwood 2017-12-06T01:14:51Z

I enjoyed the game overall and appreciated the simplicity of the design. I like the fact the you used the height of the actor to indicate how well you were doing. Although, to be honest, I did not realize this until after I had played through it and then read the title again.

After I had been playing for a while, I wondered if there was an end point or transition, so I started clicking through the options at random. Even so, I handled 119 compliments without understanding the height indicator, just going off the instructions before starting and the "feel" of how many I was accepting or rejecting. Perhaps a line about this gauge in the instructions would make it more apparent for someone who might overlook this detail. :p

The music and applause worked well and the overall design was smooth and well executed. I also appreciated the novel gameplay and interesting take on the theme. The only other criticism that I have is that the dialogue tends to get a little repetitive around 40-50 compliments in, but this is easily overlooked considering the short development time. Keep up the great work and I hope to see more from you in the future!

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Hope springs eternal. by Skosnowich 2018-12-09T23:50:13Z

I loved the ending! I kept trying it afterwards though to see if it is possible to beat without dive bombing! Great job on the visuals and sound design. I loved the use of fighter squadrons to dive bomb as well.

One thing I would have liked would to be able to control multiple squadrons at onces. Perhaps Shift + 1-9 to select multiple squads. Anyway, you did a great job and I enjoyed the level progression!

Condom Please by badpaul34 2018-12-11T02:06:53Z

This was super sad but you did a great job fitting the theme. I loved the visual design and mood of the game. It reminded be of the Postal series. The sound design was a nice touch. The gameplay had an adictive quality. I probably spent more time on this than most of the other jam games. Once I sent one of the kids off as an astronaut and I hit $100, I was ready to call it quits. I would have loved to see some more things to do with the money. Once you have enough to survive month to month, there really isn't much to invest it in. Maybe upgrade the apartment, set a kid to college, who knows!

Dungeon of Dangerous Magic by lucario12k 2018-12-08T21:25:41Z

Very cool! I really enjoyed the art style and the simplicity of the design. You had a nice selection of weapons and spells. I thought your room transitions were nice. There were a few times though that I walked into a room and accidentally pickup up the closest spell rather than having time to choose.

One thing I would have liked to see is a pop up of the controls or a description in the game submission. It took a while to figure out that space was the spell because I don't think I held it down long enough for the spell to take effect. A block mechanic would add some depth to the combat.

A Blood God's Virgin Voyage by drprettypatty 2018-12-12T01:16:17Z

Great job with the sacrifice puzzler! I really enjoyed the concept and the mood of the game. It was really engaging, especially toward the beginning. I do wish that there were some additional mechanics or nuance after learning the basics. After I had those down, it felt a bit like rotating objects through the scene.

The ending was also a little anticlimatic. I was hoping for a large altar or sacrifical chamber at the end. I would be interested to see this expanded with finished art assets and expanded gameplay mechanics.

Roustabout by bitdecay 2018-12-09T23:23:29Z

This was a blast! It felt like Tetris with a twist. I loved the visual design and animation. The sound effects and music were a nice touch and helped to set the mood. The music did get a little repetitive, but only toward end. Overall, I think you did a great job of executing your idea and polishing it on time. I also enjoyed that it had an actual tutorial and a sequence of levels, rather than just one.

One thing that I would have liked is to make grabbing and letting go of objects a little more fluid. Perhaps if you are grabbing from the bottom and want to move left or right, take a moment for the character to move around to that edge and then continue pushing. I never really felt the need to sacrifice anything unless the mice got into it. The last level was a challenge with how many objects were given, but I broke the crane before I had to start chucking things overboard!

Last Key of Robotica 3 by elitegoliath 2018-12-08T23:23:44Z

@nathanhoad Thanks!

@szabe Thanks for the feedback! There was an updated Main Menu with some UI indicators about the mechanics. It looks like it didn't make it into the latest build. I will be sure to get that info block out for future testers. We will also look into the sacrifice mechanic issue.

Last Key of Robotica 3 by elitegoliath 2018-12-10T00:02:37Z

@icegold Thanks for the feedback! We are definitely interested in expanding this game after the jam. An alt fire or additional weapon would keep things interesting! We wanted to include a melee attack, but ended up having to cut it to tie up some loose ends.

Last Key of Robotica 3 by elitegoliath 2018-12-11T01:08:01Z

@wiredoverload Thanks for the suggestion! We will definitely add some allied health indicators in the future!

@icehottet Thanks for the feedback. I thought that might turn into an issue but didn't have time to restructure the tile collision maps before the deadline. I'm glad to hear that the controls felt natural.

Last Key of Robotica 3 by elitegoliath 2018-12-22T14:30:56Z

@mccarlp Thanks for the feedback! We will make sure in future iterations that we provide more contrast to the obstacles.

Medic ! by Eryph 2018-12-07T02:39:13Z

This game is incredible! It fits the theme perfectly and does everything right. Your choices carry weight and it becomes a balacning act to save as many people as possible. The upgrade system was a nice touch and really made the game interesting and kept the difficuty curve balanced. Your team managed to come up with an innovative approach to a theme that could have easily been generic. The sound, graphics, and mood were excellent. Great job!!

Ultimate Snackrifice by Dorkulon 2018-12-10T00:00:21Z

This game is beautiful! I loved the art style, mood, and polished design. Terrific execution and very nicely done. The sound and music were also very well done.

I felt a little awkward to have to transition back and forth between multiple screens to pick up and put down items. Having a larger view that included the trash can and grocery bag would have made it a little less unwieldy. Anyway, keep up the great work!

AkimBear by ecmjohnson 2018-12-07T01:29:10Z

This looks great! I am a huge fan of the art style and I love the reflections, zoom, and visual effects. I really enjoyed the sound and mood as well. This was a good fit for the theme. It was unconventional but made perfect sense!

I tried it several times with the keyboard controls before grabbing a controller. It is great with a controller but almost unplayable with the keyboard controls. I wonder if using the QWE for the left gun and the mouse for the right gun would feel more natural.

Anyway, keep up the great work!

SadBorg by Spreding 2018-12-08T23:02:14Z

I really enjoyed the art style and the music! They both helped to enhance the mood and fit the style of gameplay very well. The design of the game was very well done. There were no bugs, issues, or unfinished portions of the game. It was a lot of fun, even though I am not a huge fan of platformers.

I was a little unclear on the sacrifice mechanic. I noticed that your limbs changed appearance and started looking like the enemy assets when you pick up a powerup, but I maybe I didn't get far enough to see what would happen if all of the assets were swapped. My only complaint was that jump was set to the Z key and that jumping felt awkward, especially if you needed to move back to the left while jumping.

Tower Builders by cheetah 2018-12-08T22:03:39Z

I really like your proof of concept here! This reminds me a lot of Jenga. I enjoyed the physics and swinging mechanics. My only complaint is that some of the jerky wind changes felt a little unfair.

This is great progress for a one shot development session! I would love to see this developed further.

Broken Knight by Mikabrytu 2018-12-11T02:16:40Z

Great start here! I enjoyed the art style and character design. The enemies were interesting as well. I would love to see sound effects and music in this.

The physics seemed inconsistent at times. I had a lot of trouble with the diagonal slope after the bridge. I couldn't jump all the way across, and I couldn't seem to jump once he started sliding down. It was also difficult to differentiate the platforms from the background. I would try to increase the contrast here and make it more apparent. Keep up the great work!

Flocked by Ice Maker 2018-12-07T02:53:50Z

I agree with some of the other responses that a fullscreen feature would be a worthwhile improvement to prevent selecting outside of the screen (or in my case, onto another monitor). Other than that, I enjoyed the simplicity of the mechanics and style of the game. The mouse inertia was a cool effect. With that being said, it does not have a lot of replay value with the same scene and basic mechanic throughout. Keep up the good work.

Flocked by Ice Maker 2018-12-07T03:43:42Z

@ice-maker Awesome! Thanks for the update!

Zoombies! by gnomes 2018-12-08T22:30:20Z

Good job getting this finished even if you didn't get everything in that you wanted. I liked the audio, the 8-bit soundtrack and gunshot effects were a nice touch. The splatter effect and graphics turned out nicely as well.

It would have been a little more interesting if the game was longer and there were more zombies before winning. I'm not exactly sure how it fits the theme, there doesn't seem to be any sacrifice being made. Maybe if you had to sacrifice yourself to save your friends or sacrifice your friends to survive!
