When i heard 56k modem sound, you made me fall in love in nostalgia. It's very fungame even this more "story" than game it's awesome :) GG

almost broke my keyboard. hahahah. nice job :D

scott-r-howell 2017-12-04 13:42

funny concept, enjoyed smashing my keyboard up, something very satisfying about it, but I wouldn't say it was worse, cant help but wonder how someone manages to write all of the stuff for those popups in 2 days, damn!

I like this take on the 'mash random buttons for code to appear' genre. I've only ever seen it used for random simulated hacking, never for tech support/social media. And I like that you let the player opt in to each round of jobs, letting them skip the jobs they don't like as much. And each job category does feel slightly different. Writing code for a game is a different feeling from replying to customer service requests is a slightly different feeling from hacking.

Having the text speed up over time was a really nice touch. Gave me a chance to read the first few lines I was writing then speed through the rest.

My main gripe is something I was worried about when the theme was announced. "The more you have the worse it gets" can apply to a gameplay experience as much as to the setting presented. And you added a lot of busywork which after a while just becomes tedious to go through. You put a fair chunk of effort into making realistic text for all aspects of the game, but after the 30th identical customer support email I stopped wanting to read anything the game put before me.

In some respects I think this effect is useful to your narrative. Your protagonist is stuck doing random menial work which they must continue even as they goes on their espionage adventures. Someone who doesn't care what they do online, so long as it brings in some cash. But on the other hand, it's not particularly gratifying to have the same text appear over and over, and in my case it actually distracted me from the story. You got me tired of reading before you started showing me the interesting parts.

I'm not trying to pass a value judgement here, I don't know what your intention was. If you were trying to focus on the aesthetic of person-doing-random-internet-jobs then I think you succeeded, and I applaud you for your effort. But if you were trying to tell a story, hint at something interesting in the code the player was writing, or make the experience though-provoking, I think you've distracted from that purpose.

Realy realy nice!!

magicdidac 2017-12-05 00:12

Hmmm interesting game! Good job! Congratulations! and Good Luck!

Cool idea, made me think of the ridiculous sequences they have in Bones or Criminal Minds where they hack into a network with 70,000 key presses a second, windows flying all over the place.

Ha ha ... my keyboard was burning. At times I felt like being at work sending emails and programming things at the send time. I was even tempted to copy the lua code and see if it works :-) I liked the game and enjoyed it a lot ... good work !!!

fluidvolt 2017-12-07 17:45

This was soooo cool. Lots of funny lines, too many to name -- I particularly liked the forum posting bits and the fake product reviews. Slick, simple graphics work well. That 56k modem sound always brings me back. I liked the constant build-up the most, the jobs you have at the end are ridiculous. Lots of character. Great work, had a ton of fun!

foolmoron 2017-12-07 22:19

Oh god not only is it a brilliant concept, it's actually one of the best "mash buttons" games I've ever played. The fact that you need to click on the next window makes it legitimately annoying when there are tons of windows popping up, so it's not totally mindless. Really cool story too, didn't expect that much variety in the popups. Lo-fi presentation was perfect. Only issue was that mashing keys had this acceleration that you could abuse to essentially fill out panels instantly and just mash enter to clear a bunch of panels. It made the game really easy, but still fun to follow to story.

As a operating system entusiast this is heaven! 5/5 at everything! Also I would love to know in what engiene have you written it, and if you can supply the code. I just notice you have a readme, thanks a lot!

I started getting a cramp in my forearm from typing so fast! I love the simple UI design and the 56k modem was a nice touch! The dialogue was hilarious and I applaud the amount of effort that must have gone into writing the text and code. I think you fit the theme perfectly and took an innovative approach.

It did get to a point where you stopped reading the text to just get through the work. It was very frantic and a litle stressful to have so many jobs at once! I would love to see this expanded and what you can do with the money to purchase upgrades or equipment.

That was a neat game.

Really fun game---I didn't even realize that was a narrative-experience until like halfway through, since everything was so well integrated. I don't know if you've ever played Digital: A Love Story, but it a does a similar thing of telling a story through an old computer interface (albeit a very different story).

The whole thing was extremely well polished and complete for a LD game, definitely something I'd expect from a standalone release. One of my favorite games I've played for LD40!

Also yay, more games made with LOVE! In fact, we got two-for-one here ;)

Great game, saw it played on stream, then played it myself, cool concept, fits the theme, some humor is also there, game has no rought edges and feels complete. Awesome entry.

I miss the autocomplete text feature hehe

This game is the best game I played so far for the COMPO. My fingers hurt so much, but I'm so happy :) CONGRATULATIONS!

xclementx 2017-12-11 13:38

Ahah funny idea ! Well done

crazyrems 2017-12-11 23:05

I didn't really know what I should do, so I randomly hit keys on my keyboard. Eventually the game comes to an end. I guess that's because I hacked some computer. I should play it again and actually take time to read the text because I thought you could loose by not tapping.

illabom 2017-12-12 01:24

NIce little game you have here. Well Done my friend!

Come check out my game if you like! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/virus-detected

racso 2017-12-12 03:24

That was a neat game.

racso 2017-12-12 03:26

Now seriously, good job! Quite an interesting experience, from the beginning (with the modem noise) to the end!

SPOILER ALERT: I feel there's something weird about the ending: why would the hacker transfer you the money and destroy your computer just afterwards? I mean, either he's a traitor or he's not.

neowhoru 2017-12-22 22:06

well there are some things that didnt made sense at all (as there is no real goal :)). BUUUUT - i really enjoyed the game. i felt like a hacker smashing keys, write a game, hack some terminals ...this is fucking AWESOME!!!

Keep on mate.

carld 2017-12-28 18:26

Best game I've played this LD! Export a HTML5 version if its possible.
