LD28 — You Only Get One

ONE - Obscured Nonphysical Expanse by ChronusZ 2013-12-18T02:52:00

For me, this game kind of captured that feeling you get when you're in a dream, and you're trying to walk forward but you're not getting anywhere. The slow movement and the fog came together to make me really uneasy, which I think is what you're going for. The swirling fog effects weren't visible to me, so it looked more like a blinding light on my machine, which only added to the "fever dream" feel of it. For a game focusing on atmosphere, these aspects work well.

Also for something like this, a short game jam game is the way to go. If this lasted more than a few minutes, I don't think I could have taken it, but again, the length is good, and it sets the tone well.

My only gripe is the walking through the wall thing felt a little cheap. Sometimes games can get away with that, but yours wasn't long enough to set the precedent that the player should try such things. It might have been better if you had left this as being an "experience" and less of a puzzle, and just let the player walk out when they find the exit.

Smashy Smashy by ossah 2013-12-18T01:25:00

Man, this is one of these games that make me want to yell at my monitor in the best way.

Freaking blocks! This sucks! ... Okay, one more time. :)

You Only Get One Skate! by angela 2013-12-20T03:12:00

Interesting idea. I just wish the guy went a little faster.

Binary Boy by Ray_Mickelino 2013-12-18T03:04:00

For what it's worth, the atmosphere was neat. I'm assuming the music randomly generated on some level? Anyway, I'm a sucker for Tron-like visuals. :)

I would like to see what you would have made if you had more time.

Don't forget your old shipmate by Dining Philosopher 2013-12-18T23:48:00

Digging the sea shanties. :) This feels like a game I could come back to. It's simple, but challenging.

Colorblind by Bernhard 2013-12-18T01:42:00

The graphics and sound were really nice. It seemed a little too easy to get stuck and needing to restart the level, but maybe should have been planning my moves out better. I'm with YellowLime in that I think the theme could have been used better, but otherwise, it was very well done.

YOGO - The Detective Story by psc1997 2013-12-18T02:33:00

I liked the artwork. Particularly the police officer. He reminded me of like a 90's cartoon policeman.

Ye Only Get One Aye by TaleLore 2013-12-18T03:20:00

I like the fake out ones. :)

Yo, Ho, Ho! Merry Christmas! XD

Title Goes Here by YourLocalFax 2013-12-18T02:09:00

Heh. The list you find with Sanchez made me chuckle.

The Terrible Battle Between Men and Turtles by saulopz 2013-12-18T02:17:00

For how ridiculous as the AI is, it does a lot to give the game a very frantic feel. I enjoyed it.

One Shot by Flatgub 2013-12-18T03:56:00

This is really addicting, and the visuals are very stylish. The music was indeed fitting and driving, though it got annoyingly repetitive for me, but in a 48 hour jam, that's easy to forgive.

ONE SHOT by João Kucera 2013-12-20T02:56:00

The music was really good, and I didn't mind the lighting effects -- I think they added to the tension, and made you really focus on if the guy was the right one. The issue that comes up is when your target stands in one of unlit spots and doesn't move. I also had the problem where I couldn't play the web version in full screen, but the windows version was fine, and I wouldn't hold that against the game. Overall, the was really good.

Cage Rage by adamwfindlay 2013-12-18T23:54:00

I really like the character designs. It was a little difficult to figure out what was acceptable as a grab, and what would get you killed. Overall, though, pretty fun.

Top Heavy by 302_Dave 2013-12-22T23:35:00

@Binary Gambit,

Thanks for reporting the error. I think the problem is that you are running the jar directly, when I had intended for you to run it using the shell script included in the folder. I should have made that more clear. If it still doesn't work for you, please let me know.

Top Heavy by 302_Dave 2013-12-22T23:56:00

I have rearranged the files and added a README to the Linux version to try make it a little bit more intuitive. Now, just run the "TopHeavy" file to play the game. On Windows, it is still Game.jar.

Dat Pig Yo! by Samsturai22 2013-12-18T03:45:00

Definitely a funny idea, and I appreciate the allusion to Slender, (at least I think that's what you were doing there) but unfortunately, it was so dark that the game was basically unplayable for me.

One Roll Yahtzee by mattr555 2013-12-16T04:39:00

I love that you have the ability to save the dice even though there is literally no reason to do so. It's a nice little self aware wink at the player.

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Stand On Dignity by pndaa 2018-12-29T02:50:00Z

Very funny, and I liked the audio. I would definitely play a longer version of this game. If I had to nitpick, I would say tighten up the controls a little bit and maybe tweak the hit boxes on the arrows a little bit, but overall, this is pretty fun.

Upsystem by terryg 2018-12-29T03:30:57Z

I played twice on Normal mode, and it was very difficult, but I think that serves this game well -- The game play loop encourages you to come back and try a new strategy. It nails the masochism trigger that these procedural perma-death games need. It also fits the theme really well considering that from what I can tell, you have an incentive to offload as many crew members as you can to doomed ships so that you can save supplies for later. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Alien Escape by aemiliu5 2018-12-29T05:29:30Z

I really liked the mechanic, but with how slowly the movement was, the game quickly became tedious, especially when you need to move 15 aliens over the same platforming segment. There is a lot of potential here for something that could be fleshed out outside of a game jam, but the pacing needs to be a lot faster.

The music was rockin' :guitar:

Price of Power by Hilvon 2018-12-29T21:41:30Z

It took a second to figure out, but once I got it, it was pretty fun, if not a little easy. I think this could actually be a really good game if you could print it out and play in person pvp. Since the cards seem to represent characters, it would be nice if they had character art on them, but I can understand why that wasn't in the scope of a jam game.

Zealot by walnoot 2018-12-30T19:41:18Z

The controls felt really good on this one. The sound effects also really helped to make the movement feel solid. I just wish there were a few more sound effects for when the character dies or for when you hit an enemy. The running and jumping feels so nice and meaty that when you hit an enemy and it dies silently, it feels off.

Overall, a great game. I would play a longer version of this.

COOLTits by Artur Majewski 2018-12-29T04:23:36Z

This was one of the more fun games I've played so far. With some more variety in the events, this could be a good time-killer game. My only complaint is that it can be hard to tell which icon corresponds to each action. As nice as the UI looks, it might be better if you could just choose between text options, or at least have the symbol you need to click in the text block describing your options.

Gatopia by krunoslav 2018-12-29T03:56:39Z

Pretty fun. It really makes you think about how far you're willing to run away from the stairwell to grab one more cat. I kept getting stuck on the walls, though.

SLAP HAPPY by Ratherjolly 2018-12-29T03:02:17Z

This is great, and it's stupid. It's the exact kind of stupid that I like. The voice acting really makes it, too. The only thing is I couldn't really find a practical use for the ice. I figured out that you can heal the faces of the NPCs with it, but there were so many NPCs that I never had to do it before reaching 100% happiness. I could see there existing a version of this game where it is a little more of a puzzle and you have to manage the ice, but as it stands, it just seems to be there for flavor.

Eztli by lilkrit 2018-12-29T23:35:19Z

While the game play was kind of simple, the graphics were pretty impressive for a jam game. A little bit of sound could have helped a lot too.

Overslept by MaiMai 2018-12-30T00:02:05Z

This is extremely polished. The graphics are really impressive, and the music is really nice. My only suggestion is maybe try to tweak the randomizer a little bit. There were times where I would get three or four of the same shape requested at once, and the ovens just couldn't keep up. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Odie Brought Mom Flowers by Psychedelia 2018-12-29T03:40:58Z

Fun little platformer. I liked the little bit of physics on the boxes. I got stuck on the second level for a little while because I didn't realize you could stand on the clouds, so maybe you could try to find a way to make it more obvious that they are platforms.

The Gods Are Angry by F1Krazy 2018-12-30T18:47:49Z

This felt like a very complete polished game. I really liked how smoothly the new game elements and colors were added in to the levels. It really made it feel like you were slowly getting to the top of the volcano. The lightning effect was particularly good. The sound really had some punch to it, and there were times where it almost surprised me enough to mess up my platforming.

Escape from Arex by Hare Software 2018-12-29T23:38:26Z

The color scheme in this game is really nice, and really nails the dreary post-apocalyptic look. The story bits are nicely done, too.

CaveSlime by YiNian 2018-12-29T23:12:54Z

Echoing what RAC-Games said, it would be better if there were more checkpoints, and the spikes were especially frustrating considering the first time they showed up was a very long way past a checkpoint, and it wasn't clear that they would kill you. It is a neat concept, though.

Bow-wow Before God by Papabirb 2018-12-30T20:02:22Z

I definitely think a tutorial would help this game out a lot, but I can understand that you wouldn't have time to get that into the jam game. I was also pretty confused at the beginning of the game, but I stuck around for the great graphics and dog puns. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: The game has a very hectic feel, but in a good way. I hope you get a chance to touch this one up after the jam, because I think there's a really fun game here that just needs a bit of tweaking.
