Aw, I got suck in the woods! :c This was super neat interactive novel! Well done!
This was really cool and well programmed with a range of commands. Great work :)
Really enjoyed this, it's cool to see a text adventure in LD. Nice work!
That was pretty cool! Ended up getting two of the endings—lost in the woods and pure of heart. I don't know if I missed something or had incorrect inputs, but nobody ever seemed to have anything to say, so for the most part I was making educated guesses as to what everyone needed. I enjoyed it, nonetheless, and may go back in for the other two endings.
Managed to get three of the four endings but couldn't find the last. Had a lot of fun with this, it's nice to play something a bit different from what we normally see. Was properly absorbed for a good 15 minutes or so!
(Also, please tell me what to do with the uniform/shoes!)
@ponygirlluna Thanks. The only way to get them to talk is to ask for the item they are holding. Definitely something for me to remember in the future!

I feel bad now. Maybe my character deserved to be in that cell.
Found all 4 endings. Cool game! I haven't played a text adventure in awhile. Did the uniform serve a purpose?
@dan-allison So the only thing to do with the uniform is wear it. What's a good delivery person with out a uniform? The shoes are part of the questline!
@bit-flipz It did not. I just added it for flavor. I wanted to expand it and have people react differently if you were wearing it but ran out of time.
@patrick-abernathy Ah of course they were, I forgot I used them haha. I think I just wanted to wear them along with the uniform. Will need to try and get that last ending!
@dan-allison Next time I'll make them wearable!
Cool text-based adventure! I got the good ending and wish I could have played the epilogue as part of the game. Nice work!
Really cool to see text based games as well, really interesting adventure.
This takes me back, I haven't played a text game for many years! I was pretty confused at first how to interact as I tried "trade" and just using the item by itself, so maybe there could be verbs that it can accept for the character interactions? Anyways, I enjoyed this a lot, thank you!
Ah I love text adventure games, this was a neat little scenario, greatly enjoyed!
I think I only got bad endings :( But interesting game, I am very not familiar witht ext based games but it's fun
@tomtomgome You get the good ending by not killing anyone!
@patrick-abernathy But it's too tempting... (and also I couldn't figure how to talk to people even after reading the comments x)
@tomtomgome That's fair. I needed to do a better job with talking. You have to saying something like "ask farmer for potatoes" to get the right response.
Hi! I'm not used to text adventures so I might be too much of a noob here but I found it difficult to get commands recognized, I tried a lot of things but couldn't get very far...I managed to get lost in the woods though, so technically I did get to an end ^^ Congratulations anyway!
@tom-oak Thanks. I should have put the commands you could use in the game. It would have helped a lot. I forgot many people are not familiar with text adventures and I have limited options available. The main commands to use to get through it (without killing anyone) are GIVE ASK and EXAMINE. SO you might EXAMINE FARMER and then based on the description ASK FARMER FOR POTATOES (the item he is carrying) and then GIVE BRACELET to trade your bracelet for the potatoes. and go through the quest that way.
Neat little game! Always good to see some IF in jams, especially text-based.
Little bug:
>x harbormaster He is pretty big. All that rope pulling keeps him in ship shape. He has a small boat for sale. >ask harbormaster for boat You can't see any such thing.
@asmadigames I found that bug too. You have to ask him for 'ship'. I thought the game engine dictionary would get that but it didn't.
A nice break from most games. Text based games are fun and this isn't an exception. I find the fact that you understand multiple version of different commands interesting and impressive. I got lost in the woods but I just don't have the patience to find other endings :smirk_cat: . I like killing old men and I also like finding secret passages and getting lost in the woods.
Great job!
It's fun to see an Inform game in here! I spent who knows how long with that sitting on my computer with the intention of creating something but never worked up the inspiration to so it's neat to see an entry. I've only gotten one of the endings so far but I would like to go through and find the other ones. The only thing I think(?) I might have found was that giving the cobbler the potatoes before asking for the shoes might soft lock you? The dialog for the cobbler didn't change, but I only realized I should have checked my inventory after I restarted :face_palm:. Kudos to you for the work!
@twobitadder The dialog doesn't change. I didn't put in anything else for them to say. so if they dont have the item anymore they just stay quiet. Definitely something for me to work on next time!
Very fun to play an old text based game! The genie was upset that I killed the foreman for the key haha.
Cool, an old-school text adventure in this day and age. It's nice of the old man to respawn after you kill him, get out of the room and back again.
@flying-dog-fish The old man has to be a god of some sort. Another bug is If you kill him and drop the map before you leave the prison that ending doesn't trigger and you can continue the story.
...I killed the old man. I wasn't sure how to talk to him, so I spoke with my fists. Although that's on me. My goldfish brain had already forgotten about "ask". That aside, it is a nice change of pace to play a text adventure, and it's quite fun.

That was really nice! It's really novel to have a text adventure in LD, well done.
Really nice idea, very hard to make something like this work well but I feel like with the tutorial (under the game) it was well made. Good job!
Yay, a text adventure! This was short and sweet, I enjoyed discovering the hidden room through the waterfall, and the hilariously escalating trades to the point where I was carrying a ship. I did find that I expected to be able to do things in the very first room that I couldn't - e.g. there was a bed in the room and I tried 'examine bed' but got the response 'I see no such thing.'
@big-cow Thanks. Next time I'll definitely make the scenery more interactive. A friend of mine wanted the mice in the feeding room to squeak.
Very fun, I love interactive fiction - I could see it expanded with the journey through the forrest etc. once you have the map. Good Job! Also, how deep are my pockets!? Screenshot 2023-05-06 at 10.51.41.png
ok maybe I shouldn't have killed that foreman. Absolutely had fun with this one!
Woah that's a lot of context to produce!
I like the old-school vibe, nailed it for real!
This was a fun game to play through but I have to say I was stuck for an extremely long time on the beginning section. This is probably because I do not really know anything about text based games, but, here is a short list of things I was frustrated did not work:
- examine locked door - examine door - examine bread - eat bread - examine waterfall - examine window
In particular, the fact that so many things were impossible to examine made me think that I probably couldn't interact with them at all. I don't think I ever would have thought to simply try writing "north" had I not seen a comment suggesting it on this page.
Once I finally got over that hurdle I had fun completing the fetch quest. There was enough variety in the remaining story to keep me engaged, and I have finished three endings so far. The fourth ending seems trickier to get, however, I haven't managed to find it yet. That's a cool thing to have, I think... a variety of endings, with varying difficulties. Good job!
@honey-pony I definitely should have made those things better. I got tunnel vision when creating this and didn't think about the objects and scenery that were not part of the main quest. Thanks for the feedback.
I DIDN'T REALISE HITTING WOULD KILL! Lol, fun game man. I'm not usually a fan off text adventures. This was cool :)
I love seeing text adventures in Ludum Dare, they are always really fun to play. Four whole endings is more than most games I have played so I'm impressed. :D Negatives wise it does suffer from the age old problem of text based games, that there is often a certain way you have to write your commands for best effect that you kind of have to figure out, though I really appreciate the example you included. Overall a great game!
