Haha! I didn't expect a turn-based game here! It has some nice classic roguelike vibes - you could certainly expand this a bit :D I think there's a bug somewhere because at some point I couldn't deliver my last nut (9/10) and fighting with my new sword didn't harm creatures anymore! Well done ;)

flying-butter-studio 2023-05-01 13:28

Impressive, nice done :O The theme is completely well followed

zeantwan 2023-05-02 10:51

I first though this was just a fetching game, but then I saw some adventure/puzzle element which were great to experience! Nice and cute game, well done!

meta-link 2023-05-02 11:17

@notnasiul Thanks, I'm glad that you experienced the roguelike experience I wanted to create ! I'll investigate on the bug, thank you for the info.

@flying-butter-studio Thanks, happy to ear that it fits well

@zeantwan Thanks ! I wish I had more time to exploit all the gameplay features I created, but it's always hard in a jam

gmaker 2023-05-02 16:10

Cute graphics. I really liked the idea of transitioning through the trees! Maybe it could have been made slightly more challenging with a mini-game. Good job!

cole-hutson 2023-05-02 16:13

I got stuck in the puzzle where you have to but the rock in the whole after crossing the second tree or I would have finished! I think that smoothing the camera would have helped this game a lot it was a little jarring for the camera to follow exactly. I also would have like to be able to hold the key to continuously move but other than that I liked the idea and the art worked!

ryne 2023-05-02 16:14

Nice graphics. Good game concept. Only wish I could hold the key down to move without tapping. Otherwise fun though.

blo 2023-05-02 16:14

Very cool graphics its so cute!!!

Personally makes me want to live as a squirel<3

osullivp 2023-05-02 16:14

I like all the various elements in the game, especially the rooms within trees.

thomas-bringer 2023-05-02 16:20

Great game! Cool visuals and gameplay, I like that take on the theme too. (Quick ergonomy tip: maybe make it so that we can keep pressing a key to go in a direction, but that's a minor problem really.) Congrats!

julvador 2023-05-02 17:56

Nice entry, the designs are cutes The trees levels and some puzzles element are nice additions.

Spamming the keyboard to move is a little tiring, but it's ok.

But gg!

fae-pdf 2023-05-02 20:42

Cute entry! The trees felt a little laborious though. I'm glad I found the shortcut to get back to the seller at the end! I like the good vibes of the game, it made me smile! Nice work, especially for a Compo game!

vhalenn 2023-05-02 23:09

An amazing game with really cool mechanics, trees especially are a really good idea ! And I love the color choices, it's very clean !

ribout-horace 2023-05-03 10:00

Cool level design and cute pixel art! The overall flow is a little bit stiff, and it should be cool to unlock some pathway to get back quicker because after we defeat all enemy, the run back home feel always a little long. But the enemy move and the "eat a nut to gain a live" idea spice up thing a little bit ! At last, the flickering when we move is straining for the eyes, but I think it's the kind of thing hard to fix.

meta-link 2023-05-03 15:55

@ribout-horace thanks for the feedback, I just wanted to add that *there is* a shortcut to the beginning if you do solve the last "puzzle"

zealous-coder 2023-05-04 01:39

This is a really good start, good to know there was a short-cut. I made cake before then lolz. It was kind of a long trek hauling that single nut back with 9/10. I was also wondering at first if I was going to have to put a nut in each basket.

chris-chen 2023-05-04 12:15

cool little game! I think it would have been nice if the game was clearer about the combat (I didn't understand the damage numbers at first). Simplifying the tree paths might have helped slightly with the tedium of going back and forth. also i chuckled at the amogus in the corner. well done!

ribout-horace 2023-05-04 16:25

@meta-link : I miss that, goddammit!

kiguel182 2023-05-04 16:39

Very cool twist on the Rogue game. Loved the graphics and the concept. The limitation of three nuts is really clever!

My only comment is that the game world is a bit too big since the player needs to keep pressing the key instead of holding it. Especially since you need to go back and forth to get the nuts.

Great work!

nsadie 2023-05-04 17:02

Nice little rogue-ish! Looks like there is all sorts of hidden things in here!

mat4dor 2023-05-04 18:39

Nice. What a brownie?

Would have loved if I could keep the buttons pressed to move. Felt very tiring to do many key presses to move.

mahjoub 2023-05-05 02:13

Nice one! Quite a large map and content added in such short time :v:

Just wished that we could get back to starting point in a quicker way after collecting all nuts

Congrats!

yasmeen 2023-05-06 11:58

Fun! Gives me old-school Zelda vibes. Like the segments where you enter trees. Can be a bit tiring to keep pressing the same key to move in a direction - maybe allow the player to hold the key to move in that direction? Good job with your game!

automatonvx 2023-05-06 18:28

Love the concept, pretty fun, made it to the end, took me a long time to realise I could actually attack the other creatures, for some reason I just assumed I had to avoid them, guess it never occured to me a squirrel could potentially beat a fox. Would have appreciated enabling the full screen button on itch page so I could better appreciate the art, obviously some basic sfx would have been nice, even just bfxr bleeps would be better than nothing. Maybe would have felt a little bit more varied if I was collecting different stuff apart from just hazelnuts, maybe with different capacities would add a bit of extra strategy. Didn't really feel much of a challenge, I don't think i took a signle hit of damage the whole game as the enemies didn't seem to move towards me. Solid effort

salyon 2023-05-07 00:42

Cool entry! I loved the concept of entering in the trees and soing some puzzles in the world

I could not figure out the combat and would love to be able to just hold the arrows, too much pressing made my hand hurt a little ahaha.

Great job!

kasperhangard 2023-05-07 07:30

Good entry! I would love to be able to hold the arrow keys. Also i expected to be able to pick up multiple nuts at a time. I think this should be added, or should be specified that you can only hold one at a time :)

cheesepencil 2023-05-08 00:32

proceduraly generated content in the compo is one of my favorite things, this is good!

meta-link 2023-05-08 09:43

Thanks everyone for all the comments ! I'll try to remember that people want to be able to hold the keys next time

@kasperhangard you can actually hold 3, as indicated at the top of the screen, sorry if it wasn't clear.

@cheesepencil sorry to disappoint but sadly it is not haha. I wish, but I had to take this decision early in the jam and choose to focus on the gameplay instead

vidarn 2023-05-08 18:27

Very cute! The trees were brilliant, and fit well with the squirrel theme. I really liked the large open procedural world, although I didn't feel like I got to explore it fully before the game was over. Overall though, I really liked the style and theme of the game.

hakro 2023-05-08 22:07

Really cool rogue'ish entry, with some puzzle elements. I like the idea and the simple world. Easy to understand and fun to explore. Very good entry overall. Nicely done.

deformhead 2023-05-09 06:52

Really good job! I loved the trees mechanics (plus the blur effect)! Hard to do more in 48h... Well done!

fabonacci 2023-05-09 13:05

Adding the possibility to hold the arrows key to move every 500ms would be nice. Except that your game is cool, Great work!

jimmymcginger 2023-05-09 22:09

Cute! This is impressive for a compo game. Noone mentioned this in the comments, so maybe it's just me having a idiot moment but I couldn't work out how to use the knife to cut the bushes in the way? But I feel I got the idea of the game from the preceding section. I liked the sprites for the animals and I really liked how the trees were used as tunnels. Given it's a compo entry I'm not suprised there's no music but having a cute tune over this would rule. I do feel it could use more challenge as the enemies didn't seem to bother me much.

francis 2023-05-10 22:19

@jimmymcginger You're supposed to step on the button to remove the bushes, or push something onto it.

Things I liked about this game: - Really cute art! And the dialogue sequence was well done. - Finding upgrades for my... knife?! haha weird thing for a squirrel to have - Tree transition between different islands - Being able to choose between delivering a nut, or eating it for hp.

Things I didn't like as much: - Way too much backtracking, I spent more than half the game running back to deliver the nuts, then running back again to where I was exploring. By the 10 nuts it was really un-fun, and if it asked me to find more nuts after that, I would've stopped playing. - Level is too large for single-move turn based gameplay. I clicked so many times just to move across the map. I think if you just reduced the level size, then it would feel much better to play. It would also help with the last point... - Enemies are easy to avoid / a little unpredictable. Having tighter levels and more limited movement would also more deliberate encounters.

Also... was the map supposed to be randomly generated? Someone else said it was, but when I reloaded the page I got the same map.

Overall, great job! Impressive compo entry :)

jimbly 2023-05-10 22:44

Neat game! My hand got sore hitting the same buttons over and over again, I would have liked to have a way to move quicker, just holding down a direction to keep moving would have been nice. I really liked the shortcut at the end, that helped finish up much quicker =). I managed to bake a cake!

meta-link 2023-05-11 17:38

Again thanks everyone for all your comments, I'm so glad that you liked my small squirrel game ! And I'm so, so sorry that you had to spam the arrow key :sob:

@francis thanks for the huge feedback, especially regarding level design (which is not generated). I hope next time I'll have time to craft a better world (and a working AI, which was planned but I failed to implement it)

bradur 2023-05-15 11:38

I was furiously spamming the arrow keys to move as fast as possible. That was kinda fun its own right haha. It was a nice experience, getting stronger with the new weapons. It was slightly annoying that I had to go back every time I had three nuts. Maybe if more shortcuts were to open as you progress it would be less of a problem. Also I wish you had some sounds and music to give the game more atmosphere. But I liked it, no bugs and the graphics looked neat :):

ludev 2023-05-16 02:06

The tree passageways were cool. Could be fun to explore that in a denser / smaller world, maybe using them to escape enemies in tense / risky situations. Nice game :)

gamescodedogs 2023-05-18 12:09

Nice done. Great amount of work was made in just a 48 hours. I hope, you can make it a good big game. Good luck and thank you for your entry.
