The most chaotic version of chess I have ever played. I love it!

johnnysix 2023-01-08 22:26

Interesting idea, the resource building element was quite interesting. Where the random placement can favour one player over another - I think it'd be better with symmetrical placement, maybe even centrally for the horse etc, and the eggplant for the king.

scribbl-games 2023-01-08 22:35

Pretty good, but very hard!

pauljs 2023-01-08 23:06

I love chess variant fun idea! The bot is hard or am I that bad? Really fun to see a melange between a mobile management game and chess (with graphics from those genres)! Great surprise! Congrats!

jiri-hysek 2023-01-08 23:16

Very cool idea! Would be nice to give it more time after the game jam and polish it to real game!

janx 2023-01-08 23:22

Suprised with what the bot threw at me! Couldn't finnish the game as I reached the point where there was one square of enemy territory which I could not capture for some reason. Not that it's much of an issue. I really like the new wave of 'chess-likes' and a farming chess game turned out quite fun! Great job!

mrpiedpiper 2023-01-09 00:14

This is really cool! I liked the familiar movement from chess, combined with the strategy of securing the resources on the board. A wonderful idea, executed well. Nice!

My only suggestion would be that you make the enemy pieces another color. Maybe randomize which color the player starts as, and make the opponent the opposite? Have lots of colors like in Splatoon? Preferably with symbols so that it's color-blind friendly.

Straightforward controls, easy to understand, fun to play. Nicely done!

Deliciously strategic!! I quite liked this one. The only problem I encountered was that I sometimes couldn't take spaces and didn't understand why (even when no enemies had line-of-sight).

mortith 2023-01-09 02:28

Chaotic indeed, i could'nt capture some tiles for no obvious reason but i had fun beating that bot, hehe.

twchapman 2023-01-09 05:59

Very very interesting idea! I love when people mash up two things that don't seem like they'd mesh well, and this certainly was chaotic! I don't have too much unique feedback to give, I agree that enemy pieces being a different color would be helpful, and I could have used a bit more explaining for some of the mechanics. I also ran into a weird issue on my second playthrough where the dark overlay got stuck, and it seemed like I couldn't select one of the squares to move to even with no opposing pieces on the board.

All that said, there might be more to this concept if you're wanting to flesh it out further!

iluvatar 2023-01-09 07:55

That's a hell of an idea, I love it. Seems like a simple combination, but it works so well. I had a really good time. The AI was pretty well executed, I was really surprised. Maybe the only thing that I would change is the colors of player and enemy. Because I was a bit confused that my colour is red and enemy is green. You know, like usually it's the other way around. But that's really just a minor detail. Other than that I freaking loved it :)

nyxkn 2023-01-09 16:00

Seems like an interesting idea but I ran into a bunch of issues. Sometimes clicking on building the farm actually built the haystack. At some point all the ui got a little messy, getting stuck in the darker mode of when a piece moves. Art is quite nice and it seems like the game has potential, but in its current state it's a bit too confusing. Sound effects would have been a huge addition.

2023-01-10 03:29

Oh my gosh it's Chess II!!! You gotta post this on r/anarchychess

zahkros 2023-01-10 10:54

Very chaotic game, loved it! My only major problem was that I forgot with pieces are mine and which are the opponent's. Pretty advanced mechanics, would be cool to see it as a polished game! Cheers

buni 2023-01-10 17:54

a little confusing at first, but the idea is great. +1 for Chess :D

thiradil 2023-01-10 18:03

A bit confusing strategy game but it's worth the time

climbing-dolphin 2023-01-10 18:04

The game needs a lot of improvements, that's a thing. But the idea is so crazy that it works. It's interesting how you mixed those two genres to make something that doesn't seem that weird when you play it. With a bit more polishing and balancing you can actually get an amazing game! Good job! Note: I saw a weird bug. If it do nothing and just skip my turns, the bot doesn't move their pieces, and they stack over each other.

the1 2023-01-10 18:07

ngl as chess lover when i saw this game i have been quite nervous if it turns out to be good, aaaand.... the game turned out to be fun! Core idea is solid a you can definitely move it further. Maybe the AI could be more smart but hey, we all had just few days. Overall Good job!

slantyoj 2023-01-10 18:12

Top game I've seen so far. Most interesting, unique, and fun. I love it when something is so good the graphics don't even matter. Top notch!

greenphox 2023-01-10 18:16

Really nice game! I really like the way you mixed chess with something else resulting in something very unique. I was exretemely impressed from the bots, they were way smarter than I first thought, (of course I won, ;) but still, really impressive. For some reason, I couldn't capture my opponent's queen. Probably a bug. Wonderful game, Well done!

pixelcrustpunk 2023-01-10 18:18

as someone who once saw a chess board(jk) this is cool, would play again

initialposition 2023-01-10 18:23

As an avid chess fan and a person that has played 0.2 rounds of Civilisation in their life this was right up my alley :D

I liked how simple the mechanics themselves were yet how deep the gameplay could get. Really thinking about farm placements, contemplating which resources to get how and which pieces to make was an interesting twist on both games. Graphics are very fitting as well. I would have loved some sound effects and the map can sometimes generate in a way that feels a bit unfair but overall this is a solid entry.

peringo 2023-01-10 18:47

I think this game would be awesome in multiplayer, at least as long as my enemy is as terrible at chess as I am. In general, the idea of mixing chess movement with 4X conventions has some big potential. Great job!

historygym 2023-01-10 18:51

dang, super cool. First time I ramped up to 4 players I got my ass handed to me because I was trying to systematically destroy opponents instead of trying to get eggplants ASAP. Learned my lesson. I think for balance sake maybe a bushel of hay should be able to buy a bishop, rather than an apple, and that queen eggplants should cost more than 3. The aI seemed to get strong pieces out a lot faster than I did on the largest game board.

Wish the player color as red was easier to understand, I keep clicking around on random tiles until someone let's me put down a farm.

I think it would be harder if each piece was forced to move every turn. I beat the AI a couple times by just leaving my pawn alone and hitting end turn and the AI ran into me. Either AI should be able to stop or I should have to make a move with every piece every turn.

I lost a bunch of pieces, including a queen by not understanding how far pieces could go. The "Can't move into sight line" rule wasn't really clear when I was playing with my pieces. Some balance here would be nice and make it less frustrating.

Oh, also frustrating that I never "won" the game. Couple of times I killed all the AI's pieces and resources, never got an end game screen. Then I tried taking over all the board spaces with my color, still no end game you win screen. I live and die for that screen man come on!

All in all, I had a ton of fun with this, played it a couple of times even though I'm supposed to be doing game rating spam.

noskro 2023-01-10 19:11

Very chaotic version of chess as you pointed out. But I love it. It is way less strategic, but still a great battle :) Sometimes it was unclear to me when my pieces could move where and why not. Not from the visual part. I could see where it can move. I just didn't understand why it couldn't move that 1 field further... But I guess with some time or reading I would have understood. But besides some quality of life features I think there is nothing much that could make the game better

juzdepeche 2023-01-10 19:28

This game is the best game from Ludum Dare 52 that I've played. I would like to replay this game once it is polished.

A really good strategy game that I will replay for sure (added to my favorites) good job!

Maybe an idea for the future: a realtime game mode? (removing the turn by turn)

kuboxxxxx 2023-01-10 20:43

I quite enjoyed the puzzle of it and deep tactics you think of, but sometimes spawn determines a winner instantly. Also there was no way to win, because last spaces could never be occupied which led to infinite turns with no ending. Nevertheless nice idea, I like that sequel to chess

reed-molbak 2023-01-11 01:18

I thought this was a fun game, but I wasn't quite sure how the game ended. It might have been a bug or something, but I eliminated all of my player's pieces and ended up just refreshing the page.

Fun idea though, I enjoyed a couple rounds

titos2k 2023-01-11 20:55

love the concept. make it a real game.

n-feofentov 2023-01-11 22:16

Supercool idea and it works fine! A bit chaotic but very satisfying. Great job!

fromage 2023-01-11 22:30

Pawns do not that work that way!

Otherwise I really liked this, as above, could use a you win screen for sure (and fix pawns!)

fedora 2023-01-11 22:51

Really cool idea! The computer destroys me every time tho

cagil-ozdemirag 2023-01-12 19:17

pawns not working as it would do in a chess threw me off at first quite alot. (unless it was intended but there was no mention of it so I guess not). First game on the smallest board, I got destroyed by the AI and "end turn" would never give a "game over" screen or anything it kept spawning units. dark overlay when selecting units felt like never go away, after few turns the board became too dark to see anything. perhaps fix the camera or always have the board centered (at least for the smaller board it was offset towards right top corner, felt bit weird) Issues with the overlay was when playing the web version. Have not tried the windows version.

I loved playing it though, neat idea. great effort.

qooorti 2023-01-12 21:39

It's definitely a cool and fun game, and that's all that matters, right? Meta is definitely rush eggplants and hope for an eggplant spawn. I agree with the comment saying spawns need to be symmetrical for fairness. And balancing of costs for what units as well.

amarokczukay 2023-01-14 18:10

what an interesting a chaotic idea! this reminds me of all the variants of chess by Pippin Barr and i love it! well the movements of pawns are not super legal but since i'm a shitty chess player anyway, i'll pass on that haha

falkreon 2023-01-14 18:12

Biggest problem here was the piece colors, it was hard to tell us apart. Late in my game the pieces stopped capturing my knight, so I went on a killing spree before finally being checked. Once they captured me for some reason I kept getting eggplants forever, the game didn't end when all my pieces were dead and the opponent wouldn't recapture my territory.

Really ambitious to do any kind of puzzle for LD. It was hilarious and fun and worth it. Thanks!

martenscedric 2023-01-14 19:59

This is a great game, I actually had a lot of FUN. I rated 5 stars FUN as it was excellent in that aspect. I really like this entry because its kinda silly but also actually fun to play

adam-gould 2023-01-14 20:28

This was very compelling! I think that you might be on to a serious gem here, with some further development I could see this being something I'd buy. There were some strange bugs occasionally where I'd click a unit that was on a farm and both types of selection were available to me (movement and building), as well as the odd case of not being able to move to a square even though there were no enemy pieces, but the concept is intruiging!

winter2277 2023-01-15 16:17

Was unique and interesting but the rules are not very clear. I had somehow capture my barn next to me with their queen and I could not recapture with my queen, even though it was not protected. Overall innovative game but it should come with a complete ruleset.

kikiriki367 2023-01-21 03:58

I love chess and i love civ, and have been playing them for 20 years now!!! And i love this game soooooo much!!! <3 And im sooo going to play it with friends! And now im off again, just one more turn to play :))
